If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

How do you get perspective lines to match at the vanishing point on the horizon? I get things off very slightly and it fucks things up, I'm aiming at the specific point, and using my ruler but it's not perfect. Maybe I should draw less difficult angles? Maybe I should buy one of those thumbtacks that rotate on the top?

I’m going away for a few months and need to choose which books to bring with me and study.

I’ve been told that my construction, gesture, and anatomy are good, but I need to improve my sense of proportions (My problem areas are always in the lower half of the body). I’ve thought of packing Loomis’ figure drawing book for this purpose.

Additionally I have no experience with design and composition, and want to start studying animation. Which books would be best to consider bringing for these purposes?

Hello, i made this picrel, please give advice on how to progress as an artist
As you can see my lines are shaky because i’m experimenting line thickness for this one. Normally when i draw all line sizes are equal and stabilized but i think uneven lines can look better. Though, I haven't figured out the rules yet so it’s as you can see.
Also I struggle with expressing my emotions onto my art, because i feel some sort of block in my head that prevents me from being to expressive. I don’t know how to free myself, i think it’s a combined effect of my personal past and studying STEM so my brain is like this machine cog i cant break free from. I’m scared of my own being overwhelmed by my emotions if i really allow myself to feel them, so I intellectualize it and it hampers the whole point of art. (though I'm getting better)
Anyways sorry for the long personal rant, I would like tips on how to improve. I remember i really enjoyed drawing as a kid, it felt free.

I would just try not to worry about forcing out improvement just draw whatever you like, you can set separate times for studies/improvement so your brain can worry about accuracy when copying photos but relax when just doodling or scribbling for fun.

Quick things to fix would be to learn color theory and just try to redraw photos of real people for anatomy. Timed figures is a great way to get started just do like 10 a day after a month you'll see great improvements from when you started

First day of practice as a nodraw. Did some shitty copies of blooks. Loomis says to do your own shit and not copy, though. I'm gonna do a few more of these blooks, especially the projection ones on page 32 of FWAP, and then try to use the principles to draw Sonic since that's all I want to do.
I'm also gonna try and fit in some time for the upside-down man exercise from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I did the first two face vase exercises; I've seen people say that it's a bunch of pseudoscience but Edwards was right about it getting my brain working and making me think in a different way. The notebook paper allowed me to cheat by using the lines as reference, so I'll probably have to get a real sketchbook.

Studying is trying to reverse engineer the work of another artist. It implies thought and often creativity as well. Copying is rather mindless; you do it with the hope of imitating an artist. There's a time and place for both. Take gestures for instance - there's value in copying the gestures of great artists, because you get a feel for rhythms and ratios.

More of a redraw than a redline. When you construct try and construct in 3d/perspective. Understand your subject exists not flat on the page but in perspective always. For example the hips you draw the spheres essentially equidistant from the triangle. That’s flattening your drawing and getting rid of the depth. They need to exist as 3d forms on the page. Have some random drawings in there to try and explain various things. Fairly messy on my end but it should be interpretable.

Strongly recommend improving perspective skills. the krenz perspective course linked in /asg/ is a solid place to start, that's what I used. Don't rush through it if you do, do it thoroughly. Can also do Scott Robertson or drawabox, or one of the million other perspective resources. Not a huge fan of drawabox personally.

those are an alright start, But to start feeling comfortable drawing in perspective you have to do more than just draw simple forms in a vacuum. You have to draw basic scenes, forms that all obey the same perspective, scenes with varieties of rotated perspectives, etc. You'll slowly build an understanding of space doing that.

To parrot myself from earlier, while you should draw whatever you want, I think if you want to improve quickly you should take a stab at the perspective course here: https://asgg.notion.site/Krenz-238090f8a5934eb883fc644bef1d1214

Okay so I really like the face and it's better than I could do. The anatomy beneath the dress just didn't make sense to me, so I did another sketch of the hips connecting to the legs. I always struggle with arms/ hands because I tend to draw them last, so I don't give them a purpose within the drawing. I tried to give both hands a purpose, making her left grab the skirt as a sign of subtle nervousness, and making the right give a dorky peace sign, to signal she doesn't really know what to do and is defaulting to a pose she knows.

Alternatively I almost gave her a gift bag, but I felt like it interfered with the silhouette. You don't have to go with a peace sign, but you have an entire hand there, you might as well use it to give information to the viewer.

1. Gesture

How do you decide which colors to use for pictures like pic rel? Like the dudes face is clearly not blue green but it still looks good, how do you come to thesse decisions?

I like the forms. by far your biggest issue is proportions imo.
right pic is probably the worst offender in terms of proportions. the full left arm (his left) is shorter than the torso. Head is almost the size of the ribcage. Left leg has no upper leg. I realize your trying to foreshorten there but we should still see a little more of it imo.
left pic is better but has issues. Short arms, torso feels a bit wide, lower back muscles overhang the butt for some reason. Rib cage and pelvis are perfectly in line which feels stiff. Also the dude feels like he's leaning forward slightly, which adds to that feeling of stiffness/unrealistic pose. keep your figure balanced.
middle's not terrible either. head/torso connection should be improved. Thighs feel overly large and the lower legs are far too short. tiny feet as well.
You also seem to have an issue drawing things whose origin you cant see. Right guys right arm feels like the shoulder starts uncomfortably high and far back. Middle persons right arm feel a bit too low imo, but fairly close. Hard to fix this, but try to draw through or at least think about it more while drawing.
Last thing is to pay attention to symmetry. Middle guys head is fairly verticle, but his eyes are slanted heavily leading to a weird looking face.

Wrong
The gesture is what makes your human drawing look alive, gives it personality, gives it humanity
The shapes are what you use to build volume on it
Anatomy is what gives it highlights
I started gesture drawing two months back and I don't even do it every day yet
I only focus on the action
It's literally all written down in Vilppu basic figure drawing, read the text don't just copy the images randomly

Ps. The act of getting a human-like action lines will keep you engaged with the boxes and circles since you will be hyped to complete the figure and once you get that down you get into refinement territory
You WANT to learn how to draw faces better, hands, feet, anatomical landmarks just to keep the ball rolling and you look at your drawing later and you notice what you could do better and its a self-sustaining loop of improvement because you are creating life on the paper with your own two hands
2 months in as a beg, master study

why the extreme angle? looks like you're going for a comfy winter scene, that doesn't really fit. the group of people behind her make it look a bit ominous, can't tell if that is intentional or not.

The lines are the direction and flow of limbs , and the circles (cyllinders) are basically where the elbows, shoulders, hip joint, knees, feet, arms end.
If you can visualize it like that, look at a human and think in terms of cylinders it actually helps. Also it takes a while for it to sit in but I promise its worth it, you unlock the vision to see everything in his drawn shapes and it becomes easier to put on paper
It helps if you play around a lot with the shapes he teaches about
I felt like i didnt know what i was doing and played with action lines for a month and tried to make my own but there was a big difference in how I wasn't able to "flesh out" my own while fleshing out his action lines felt a lot easier making me realize ok this is something I gotta study more

Then something clicked and my own action lines improved and I was able to flesh them out
And I will revisit them again once I go through the rest of the book
I'm still on the first chapters and I am gaining from it months later

>>6972513
This is a study of Vagabond panel where you cant see half the scene because its obscured by grass haha so I tried playing around and making it more visible
This was possible only because I study Vilppu

This anon is right, the composition is fine but the dutch angle implies to the viewer that something is wrong or off, all the lines point to the people in the back and since they're out of focus it feels like she might be abducted

Not ADHD but my attention span is abysmal. I've been using a modified pomodoro method, aka timed work period followed by a timed break. The reason I gave for the angle was because it's tilted it seems slightly off, since all the perspective lines point to something out of focus and they are in shadow it seems like you're not supposed to be able to see them so something will happen with those people. >>6973768
