If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Would anyone be able to share a better method of making a simplified body?

In my pic related I was trying to copy the top right, I've already been through Vilpu's basic figure drawing and Loomis figure drawing for all its worth (read both, did exercises and copied the female drawings), but even after copying those I struggle to even get something as half as close to what I actually want to draw like pic related

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

how long should you labour over projects art textbooks give you?
I'll read a chapter of Eviston then do that chapter's exercise for an hour (he says to only do one a day).
but I reached the part where you learn shading and just keep practicing that every day.
is it more useful to just do 1-2 reps of each project then move onto other books?
I've been trapped in this book forever so I have no frame of reference, it's my first art book

Hello beg. With this the book is now officially finished. As usual i will take a 1 day vacation, use the time to play diablo2 and recollect on my loomis thoughts and then probably pick up Vilppu book. I dont recommend anyone to try to learn from pain with pencil, the skill curve is absolutely fucked up.

>>6966579
>what have you learned from loomis
The head model and simplistic body model are rather practical. There was very little wisdom in the book, but i recon i got a good mileage out of the book. I legit started to draw stuff i dont see. But i would most likely learn this even without the pain with pencil book

What is considered chicken scratching? People seem to think any sort of messy line is chicken scratching. To me, it's more of a mindset and highly specific and describes the beginner habit of making multiple smaller lines to make one bigger line, they lack the ability to coordinate or aim their strokes and have a limited range of motion.

I'm digging this exercise I can increase the quantity of paintings I can do i a short time which is what I need right now.

>but more oriented on trying to avoid my brushes to become an uniform blob that is only distinct on the outer edges

This is why for now i'm ditching the eye dropper and cranking up the opacity|flow to 100% from what I seen from LIN RAN and Krenz is that solely using the RGB picker is the best way to get 1. harmonic colors 2. beautiful defined gradients.

>I started to despise that look on my work and can't help but get triggered when I see it on other artists pieces as well.
Cheer up, at least now you know whats not working, just keep pushing, you can do it.

Just use white or black to lighten or darken. Complimentary colours will neutralize whatever colour you're mixing from. If your current swatch is too intense of a saturation, let's say ultramarine blue, you can desaturate it with an orange (it's opposite). Lightening agents involve titanium white or naples yellow. Paint that lightens the value and changes the hue of the current swatch minimally. A darkening agent involves paint such as mars black or burnt umber.

When you're mixing swatches, try not to use more than 3-4 to get what you want as you'll just pollute the purity of your paint.

Most of this information is useful if you know how to paint.
Watch this video, it's how you should be approaching painting. With an average light color and average shadow color. You can subdivide this by each element in the painting too. A tennis ball will have it's own average light and shadow color compared to a red cup.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ5QF0q4QqQ&t=122s&ab_channel=MarcoBucci

Also the reality of painting is that you're going to use paint, there's no avoiding it, although it's a bit less than you might think.

/beg/ here. I've been drawing only still poses so far, and now I'm looking on practicing more dynamic poses and posing in general.

Any ideas on good sources for action poses reference? I've been looking at those "pose reference" pics where people deliberately pose in the studio, but those feel too "still life" if that makes sense Sports photography seems to do the trick partially, but still requires some skimming through to find stuff I need. How did you solve the reference problem for yourself?

I've also been avoiding the pose compilations drawn by others so that I don't subcosciously copy their mistakes in fundamentals.

Is this all a good course of action or am I wasting time and practice will make perfect even if the reference isn't the best?

you're probably not studying to be a medical student, so keeping track of the major muscle groups and how they function should be enough - you really don't need to know about or memorize the names of the individual extensors in the forearm, for example.
as for memorizing the stuff, using SSR like anki will help with refreshing your memory inbetween studying and drawing

The point is to get a feel for the forms and when to use them. Don't start with a beg trap book but actual good ones like Vilppu basic figure drawing. It took me like 2 months drawing and rereading and redrawing and I made a huge leap, in what seemed like overnight, something just clicked.
I can get volumes right with some effort and its becoming easier to look at a ref, deconstruct it into basic forms and reconstruct them on paper.
When Vilppu clicks you feel like a fucking carp ascending into a dragon

I grind lines, elipses, shading every day like a fucking boy scout, but they barely got any better. It takes me 3-6 tries to draw a line somewhat as intended. And proper shading is some mysterious thing that's clear for everyone but me.

But most importantly, i want to draw environments, natural mostly. I've watched some tutorials on that, but every time i try, it ends up being a mess of random colors smashed onto one another.
Any tips? Any decent courses? Any anything? I'm fucking desperate.

try different brushes play around with an aliased brush (you can always smooth them latter) and then with a pencil brush, I think it will be easier to merge lines with either one of those. Avoid stabilizers for now work that motor skill.

for painting, start with marco bucci's 10 minutes to better painting

They told me to draw for fun, so I drew Medli from Wind Waker.

In all seriousness I know this looks bad. I dunno why her arms look so flat and weird looking. My line confidence is much better but still too wobbly. I didn't fully know what I was doing with shading either.

I need to go back to drawing realistic figures eventually.

This is of course the results of drawing on most days for over two months.

The first thing I notice is that the first pigs head is way too wide, same goes for it's nose. When in the initial stages, their are 2 things you need to be primarily concerned with, proportion and angles. When you make a shape, the only questions to ask yourself are whether it is too tall of too wide. Using similar landmarks in your drawing and comparing to the original reference, you've made the snout too wide. The eye is also too far from the snout. If you were to capture these relationships, your drawing would be more successful. Also get reference with clearer delineations between the light and shadow. Like this pumpkin here https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/442197257177551450/

Also avoid texture and color (unless it for fun or doodling) until you get a better grasp for grayscale painting. Those are distracting you from the real meat of the painting which are the shapes of light and shadow.

hey i dont know what tf i was doing there. the right eye looks like an egg and i added some weird line over the eyelash for no reason. ill try drawing that same angle later.

The eyes are a bit lifeless like they aren't looking at anything in particular, the mouth seems too high up, colors are a bit bland, the body parts also seem janky, maybe look up references of someone in that pose and redraw it to make it more solid, the top looks like it's fighting between being a sweater and a button up, hand position for the one stretched out seems unatural. The hair is nice but a bit lopsided, try to flip the canvas

Honestly I'm just being overly nitpicking since you asked but it's not that bad anon the main thing to fix is the strength of the pose/face you'll probably get it done better on a second or 3rd try

Oh man, prepare to level up. First, watch this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7FxMiBFjqM
Then work through either Keys To Drawing, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, or proko’s beg course or Brent Eviston’s beg course. You’ll see massive gains. Btw, those eyes are very clean and symmetrical, good job.

She needs thicker thighs that taper somewhat as the approach her knee. Thicker at the top, thinner at the bottom. And not only because I’ve got a thing for thick thighs. Imagine where her pelvis is and where her femurs stick out, then look at her thighs and how they’d connect. In fact, try redlining your own drawing and draw the pelvis construction that;s hiding under her skirt. The only other thing I can see is her jacket thing might be slightly weird looking in the collar/lapel area, but only maybe and it’s not a big deal at all. And the wrinkles/folds in her top suggest must smaller breast volume than the sideboob implies. For starters, you could try using the vertical lines on the dress act as cross contours curving over the surface of those bazoongas to show the form. Also, try making the lines under her chest curve down like a U, sagging under the weight of her sweater puppies, rather than curving up like an arch. Everything else is basically great. Good job!
>>6969754
Nice. Her left (our right) arm needs work, especially if she’s supposed to be leaning back on her elbows. At first I thought she had like a low ledge or counter or something behind her that she was resting her elbows on, but now I’m not sure of the pose. That’s what it looks like you were going for. Just fix that arm and add something behind her and you’ve got it.

You should either 1:
learn how light works and how to render by looking up how Steve Huston does it (or Proko or Eviston or Bucci or etc.)
Or 2:
Learn how to render with modeling tone and ambient occlusion like Vilppu or Marc Brunet teach

Can you link me a tutorial/video on perfectly smooth shading? I looked at some videos but still not totally get it.

Or the secret is really just that to get perfectly smooth shading, you are using the absolute lightest pressure you can and need Buddha-like patience for the slow speed?

I did this in like 15 minutes or so?

Improving my sleep has allowed me to do more without getting burnt out, though I am REALLY bad at drawing eyes still.

The pose btw, was NOT done with any references, only references were images of the character.

Just I dunno what it is, like when I do the eyes, they never look right? They always feel soulless and off.

you can always just practice doing facial features by themselves from different angles until you understand them better but that won't help with the rest of the figure obv

>> No.6970280

>>6970262
I may try that next.

I know it doesn't look great, but this would have taken me hours to do a few years ago (I have only been actively drawing since late September for the record). Though constructing the head is a lot easier for me, especially since when I drew this character first she looked awful...now she looks a tad more appealing but still crude of course.

Hello, I'm trying to learn drawing so I can sketch minerals, rocks, and outcrops of rocks (maybe some landscapes too), but I notice in all the guides I see that there's an extremely heavy focus on drawing people... Would learning that even be important for my uses or is it just that drawing bodies makes use of important principles that are universally used?

I’ve been told that my construction, gesture, and anatomy are good, but I need to improve my sense of proportions (My problem areas are always in the lower half of the body). I’ve thought of packing Loomis’ figure drawing book for this purpose.

Additionally I have no experience with design and composition, and want to start studying animation. Which books would be best to consider bringing for these purposes?

well for one an accurate sphere's outline should be a perfect circle. But its good you give a fuck about making good spheres first, since in figure drawing you're really only going to be utilizing what you posted (i.e. blobs)
