**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Been seriously learning how to draw for about 2 months now. The number 1 thing I'm struggling with right now is finding which kind of anime art style to copy.
I really like the jagged edges of PS&G but it always ends up looking TOO cartoony in my eyes. I was really happy with the line work I did on this piece,
1) this kind of style demands brighter coloring in my mind, and I'm not great at that
2) the piece I'm working on today doesn't transfer well to this style/I'm not good enough yet to apply this style to references that aren't in this style.
So I'll get in a groove of drawing in one style, deciding one day that I don't like it anymore, and then effectively undo all the progress I make.
So a few questions:
>General advice on how to not get into this death spiral?
>What do you think of this general style?
>What can I do to improve?

you're overthinking it. mileage doesn't get overwritten and the more of it you have, the easier it is to learn another style or whatever as long as you know your fundamentals
I once read the way you draw should come naturally over time as a sum of every other style you enjoy, while cutting some corners (inconsistencies) in order to glue them together

>> No.6973118

>>6973029
Not that anon but I agree that you won't be seeing much progress doing it by eye at your skill level since you don't have an anatomically correct face as a point of reference. It'd be like being asked to build a car engine when you've never seen the inside of one before.
It doesn't have to be drawn super realistically but you should first stylize from references with construction, like in how-to books and videos and photos. Then once you have a grasp of what makes a face look like what it is and how it turns in different angles, you can study artists you like and see what shifts and changes they made to the standard.

I need help figuring something out, my brushes both custom and default behave differently when tested on pictures I get from the internet compared to a new canvas I create on clip studio paint. I can replicate near perfectly the brush quality on other people's pieces but when I use the exact same brush on my own canvas the strokes are thicker and also less pixelated. What could be causing this? I have tried setting my canvas resolution to the exact same dimensions as the sample but the problem is still there.

You say "westoids" but a ton of animators and illustrators hone their skills by doing croquis everyday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHJWjclAVnI
I'm not even suggesting the other anon to start "copying bridgman twice" or pull up medical anatomy books to study. That's only if you would like to achieve that level of mastery. I'm saying to stylize into anime from reference and that will give you good foundations to start copying other things more efficiently. The reference /can/ be 2d but it should come with some level of anatomical skill. There's a ton of content from teachers that already did the work of breaking it down for you. Did you want me to specify Japanese how-to books and videos instead? Fill the blanks yourself rather than assume bad faith when given this type of advice.
If you would like to just copy stuff blindly, go ahead. Mileage is possible if you work just as hard as the mangaka you follow. If you're copying with some small awareness of fundamentals, that's even better but you will hit a wall at some point if you crave further growth. Decide for yourself but also know your options.

how do the highlights retain a shape like this? It doesn't make sense, they go 360 around the head and also seperate into 2 lines when the hair are a continous slope
If you simplify the shape to a pall you would expect only one point of the hair to have the highlights, how do the rings of saturn of highlights happen?

I didn't really know him all that well before he started teaching but he has gotten extremely popular over the last couple of years for his course. Boils down to "tricking weebs into actually doing fundies" by using homework and resources that cater more towards their interests. It's nothing new that other teachers make you do (perspective, value distillations, master copies etc.) except he packaged it in a really appealing way that clicked with this specific crowd. By the end he teaches how to break down other artists' work that you like and how to apply it to personal work and its a harder concept to grasp than most people who don't have their fundamentals in order realize.

Not that anon but highlights are meant to suggest form. So things like the shape of the skull (which is a sphere in simple terms) and the hair the character has will affect how the highlight falls on it, as well as where the light is pointing. If you just draw on the highlights without realizing it will have the opposite effect of flattening your image. It's a stylized way of making it seem like the hair shape has "strands" and catches light similarly. There's a ton of ways to depict these but more often than not the rule of thumb is that it's like a halo which follows the curve of the head.
You can practice this by shading spheres and find the line where the light is still caught by the top of it and where the shadows start. Don't overdo it or it might lead to flattening if you lose the shape and adding some shade just behind the highlight creates a nice shaded look without much effort once you figure it out.

Better example from an artist i'm studying currently. A little glare goes a long way and is very pleasing to look at when shaped well. I rushed my example so I feel it's a bit overdone but that also depends on the lighting situation. Dark to jet black hair also presents its own challenges. Some tend to add way more shine than any other color since there's not much middle value to work with.

Something to study up on! This second attempt already looks a lot better since it doesn't create a straight line so don't sweat it too much. Here's an excerpt from Dorian Iten's light course. You don't need every shadow and light described here, keep it simple. I suggest observing art you like and drawing a curve where the highlights are like this anon >>6981430 demonstrated. Then see if you can observe the relation between the orientation of the head, how the hair falls over the head and how the character is lit. Try to find both simple and complex examples of how different artists depict the highlights and then see which one you like.

Poor understanding of human body and lack of experience in drawing humans. Study each body part separately and apply piece by piece. Do more complete copies after studies.

>cant stylize into anime
Lack experience in drawing anime. Do more complete copies of anime art. Distinct parts such as the face needs studying.

Unironically at this point you just need to draw more. Do copies to challenge your drawing skills and level up your eye. Studies to fix whatever looks wrong.

I saw this guy @n0.impact's art and I love it. It's like they're putting my thoughts of what I wish I could draw in high school to paper. I just need a creative outlet again and this shit inspired me to get into art.

Immerse yourself with your subject and just draw what your observe. From the art I could tell the artist pays special attention to detailing clothes and props down to the folds and creases, which creates this nice contrast with the simplified faces. The linework and hatching are very meticulous, so you have to be like that as well. Start with placing an object in front of you and try to sketch it in different angles, increasing the complexity of the object as you go. Pick up a book or video tutorial about hatching and inking. Get familiar with how to shade objects with just lines.

Anyone was there when Saitou's Youtube archives were shared? Basically I have 80GB of videos I cannot watch because it's all locked behind a password I forgot to save. I get it's not a big deal since he's been re-uploading tons of stuff but it bothers me still. I tried searching in the archives but I cannot find that thread again.

It's got the usual beginner drawing problems. The pose is off balance and out of proportion, the shapes are vague and lumpy, and perspective is nowhere to be found.
There's no real way to salvage what's there, just start fresh and spend more time on the intial pose.

I hit my 3 Month mark today, so here's a look back and everything I did over the course of Month 2

As far as personal thoughts go, I think i'm making decent progress, overall could have done many things better, been more diligent, did more practices, but ultimately I'll just have to reflect on those mistakes and learn from them for this month

I've also been doing better as far as detaching myself from my art, where I don't feel like i'm constantly comparing myself to others, nor do I feel as bad as I used to when I see another new learner doing way better than me

Overall, good month, happy that I'm keeping to drawing and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! I hope 2024 goes well for myself and everyone here with our art studies.

Also some of the days are super pixelated, I think I made them too small when I was making the collaboration image, i've been doing it in MS Paint and frankly I need to find a better method

I haven't drawn in like, 12 years. Quit when I was a teen. Trying to start again...

Honestly I'm kind of pleasantly surprised? Like, it's dogshit but if you squint and pretend you have a concussion it's vaguely recognizable as the picture I was copying. I don't know, I put this off for several days after digging out my tablet. It felt like I was doing something terrible but it's just... a bad drawing. That's it. No big deal. I wish I could have understood that when I was a kid.

Reaching the end of my 'challenge'.. (Whole year Draw every day)

Assumed drawing every day would be the fastest result to improvement.. but now I'm feeling art is different to other skills which I can just 'grind out' through raw hours.

Probably going to take a break after this year and reevaluate how I want to progress, starting to feel that ONLY going for exactly what I want to make is the best way to improve.
