If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

i didn't get to post this in time before the other thread started saging, but here's my take on your character

i agree with what >>6963907 said her face is too cartoony and big compared to her more realistic body in your original drawing. i made it smaller and toned down the face a little, and changed her silhouette a bit. other than that, i don't see many issues other than general anatomy stuff you can improve on through figure drawing. i also tried to redraw her in a more cartoony style while keeping her features. i changed up her outfit too. looking back i think i prefer your outfit but oh well. hope the ideas and input helps

>> No.6964426

i don't get when perspective should be used. i know about vp, hl, but why doesn't every drawing use them and why some drawings get away with drawing some sort of fake perspective? is every drawing without perspective just a "perfect" one point perspective?

Depends on how you draw. Some artists don’t consider perspective at all because they use sight-size or just copy shapes. If you draw constructively then perspective is absolutely essential. The level of detail of an artistic expression is not a guarantee of quality. Surely unnecessarily detailed art is op's wet dream.

There can be 'simple and creative art' and 'overloaded/boring art'. Stop lying and confusing people with your arbitrary rules. The only thing that matters is 'balance' (creating input that obeys innate psychological structures) and 'creativity' (the 'non-arbitrary' deviation/permutation of these structures).

People like you are the ones who prevent the West from creating its own macrostyle that competes head to head with 'Tezukism'...

you usually be thinking in 3d space but don't start every drawing thinking you need to create a grid (although you can do that if you want to and of course part of thinking in 3d is having an intuition on that)
your only goal as an artist should be making a drawing that looks good

start doing more life drawing, and urban and dynamic sketching to help develop an intuition

Yep, you’re doing them right. As long as you’re actually doing studying, it doesn’t really matter what they look like. There isn’t really a wrong way do draw them, as long as you copy/study them with attention. You’re doing this to understand what the drawings are trying to teach you. If you get to a part where you don’t understand what’s going on, or you’re having trouble conceptualizing it for yourself, draw it over again and/or ask for help. While these look pretty good, aesthetic or technique is not at all the point here. You can do them in crayon or finger painting. As long as they’re true enough to the original that you’re actually learning something, they can look like whatever. The lines can be ugly or sloppy or scratchy — as long as you’re paying attention and not being sloppy in your learning of the forms. You have to draw them with intent, on purpose. When you’re studying, ask yourself “What is he trying to show me? What is this drawing trying to demonstrate? What is the idea he’s trying to teach here?”

For bonus points on really grokking something, once you understand the construction and the idea you’re being shown, draw it again from memory. Or, even better, this time do your own version of it. Not to recreate the exact image from memory, but to use the construction/idea you’re learning in a simplified drawing of your own. For example, if the if the concept being taught is “the neck is like a tube clamped between the middle of the clavicles in front and middle of the traps in back, and the traps and clavicles meet at the ends to form the top of the shoulder,” like you see in figure 3 there, draw the Morpho version and then draw your own take using/showing that same idea. Or draw a couple simplified diagrams of the forms from imagination using the information you’re learning from Morpho. Or try to draw the Morpho drawing from a different angle.

Thanks for the write-up, Anon. First time doing studies like these, so I appreciate it.
I like the idea of doing my own version of each one, so I think I'll start doing that too from now on.

One other question — for Morpho, is it made so that I'm supposed to do the sections in chronological order, or can I jump around the book and do it in whatever order I want? Sometimes when I'm drawing, I'll feel like "ah fuck, I really don't get how this part of the arm is supposed to look." It would be nice to jump to the arms section to help figure it out, but idk if that would fuck with the process, if there even is one.
Thanks again, regardless.

I am pretty comfortable with drawing boxes, cylinders, and gesture. I was planning on drawing gesture, construction, layer on top of a book like Hampton, Loomis, Bridgeman or something to get a feel for how it all fits on a form and how the muscles and bones connect. Is this a good approach or should I only ever use the book as a reference?

Some good work here, but it lacks cohesion. The line thickness is all over the place, with the background lacking any lines, the old man having thick comic styled lines, and the fairy having ultra thin lines. Bring a more uniform approach to the entire project would benefit you greatly.

I noticed that your colours seemed to be all over the place. A fun thing you can do is to go watch a movie or show and grab a screenshot of a scene with an interesting pallet, grab the colours off of that and notice how they look cohesive next to eachother. Grabbing a few images arms you with a pallets that you can reference or use in the future, don't make this a crutch, but it's okay to as long as you learn from it!

Hi Pawell. Always encouraging to see you striving. Can you offer my 2 cents? I think if you changed to a brush that varied line weight with pen pressure you might have more appealing linework. And I also think that sometimes it seems like you're rushing your practice drawings out, leading to sloppy forms that aren't really helpful. Sometimes it's just a little too messy, a little too haphazard.

Taco, I only saw the anatomical notes he posts on pixiv, but besides being in Korean I think you need to have prior knowledge of anatomy to understand the artistic choices he uses to make the simplifications.
Morpho also makes it clear that the figures in the book seem ambiguous, so that they can be used as a reference for both males and females.

Stick to one fundamental or course for a few weeks and try to have fun with what they teach you. With proko, watch the video on the topics he covers multiple times throughout a week and do multiple of them. Currently I'm doing gesture and the bean and am now doing the landmarks part.

I do them all together because it may give a better wider context to the point of the course and you don't want to stick too long to something like gesture or the bean which alone won't really make you better.

I appreciate your posts BTW, keep it up. Your journey will inspire others.

Her tail is barely noticeable somehow. Took a while to notice it. Also the diamond/scale pattern on her tail really flattens it out. She doesn’t really look like she fits in/is grounded in the scene. Almost like she’s copy pasted onto the background from a different piece. Ditto for the bike. I’d add some ambient occlusion around her hand where it’s resting on the square metal thing on the motorcycle seat so it doesn’t look like it’s floating or photoshopped in. The metal part where her foot is resting looks like it would probably be covered by the same shadow that’s cutting across the front wheel, so it might not be as shiny as you’ve got it here. Compared to the other shadows in the background, the shadow on the front wheel looks rather unnatural btw.
There are way less weird areas where you’ve accidentally flattened the form in this one compared to the tan archer lady and the character sheet with the girl that had the bunny costume. You’re improoving, anon! Good job. Very appealing, good gesture, this is a proper work of art. You should be proud.

I stopped for over 2 years. Started again in August. I’d probably be pretty good by now lol. Anyway, it’s good to train observation and accuracy to get back in the swing of things. Eviston or Proko have good courses on that. Welcome back, king.
>>6966193
Hm. I kinda like her reaching out better.
>>6966138
Find a book with hand drawings and copy them.

Based master study, anon. GMI as fuck
>>6965949
Cute!

Did the screeching girl’s hand fall off?
>>6965827
Ambitious. Symmetry is incredibly hard. GMI
>>6965752
Oh, good job. Immediately recognized it.
>>6965695
Superb. Really good job, anon, that’s an excellent study.
>>6965488
Yep, a little better. I recommend, a veg book or course like Betty Edwards, KtD, proko or Eviston
>>6965457
Amelia? Cool plane, looking forward to seeing this when you finish it.
>>6965251
The boxes for the ribs look a bit out of perspective with the figures. You also don’t have the boxes taking up the entire space of the rib cage. I’d try extending them up to the top of the 7th cervical vertebra.
>>6965250
Construction is a major fundie, but it’s not the only one. Observation and accuracy (drawing what you see and not what you think you see) another big one. And values/understanding light. There are many fundies.
>>6964884
:) good for you, fren. I’m glad I could help some.
>>6964946
Yep, as long as you study the entire book, it’s fine.
>>6965175
That’s pretty fucking good, anon.
>>6965195
nice as always, anon. These are fun to look at
>>6966234
Impressive!
>>6966253
Yeah, your work is definitely paying off
>>6966450
Yep

>>6966491
This is amazing for your first ever!
>>6966497
These are beautiful. The one with antennae should have the hem of her shirt match the tilt/ perspective of her rib cage. Otherwise 10/10 borderline /pro/

he is pretty much autismo level. Every tiny bit is meticulously put but lighting is inconsistent, perspective is wobbly and everything looks like pasted cutouts. beautiful but incoherent

I can't. What the actual niggerfuck fuckitty fucknut shit.

How come I just dreamt how to draw with a fineliner a perfectly accurate pro level drawing o f fucking spiderman with chiseled abs and a 6pack sitting in his pose, when I never play the games, never watched one of the movies in 10 fucking years, but maybe saw 1-2 images on twitter earlier this year and that's fucking it.

HOW THE FUCKING FUCK DOES MY FUCKING STUPID RETARD AUTIST BRAIN SAVE THIS AND IS ABLE TO PERFECTLY DRAW THIS IN PEN AND INK IN MY DREAM BUT WHEN I AWAKE I END UP WITH DRAWING SPONDERMON WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCKKK

it's possible to construct it like you did for the rest of main objects.
yours looks at least a little off, the two closest shadow edges to the camera don't seem to go towards the same light.
