If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I did some figure drawing with a 5 minute limit on each one. took a break with realistic in the middle with some anime ones.

Should I be reviewing the anatomy fails/ completing these? does the time limit really make sense? I wasn't really doing gesture drawing (I can't really wrap my head around it yet), just testing my limits and trying to get more confident with lines. any redlines are appreciated if you feel like it

I practiced some gesture and beans earlier today before I did this figure drawing session. This is the result. There's technically more behind the page but I don't feel like showing 2 pictures.

The top figures were 2 minutes each, the bottom was 5 minutes. I really feel like for 5 minutes it's a pretty bad result, but maybe I'm comparing myself to others too much.

Which one, her left or right? I'm just experimenting with the volumes to see what works, if you want to see my pathetic attempts at finished hands, I can post that too of course.

If you're referring to how the right hand isn't resting on the leg, I was focusing so much on the torso that I made her legs too short; the floating hand is the result of re-adjusting her legs to be longer.[

Completely failed and disastrous study attached; not every day of practice is filled with joy and ecstasy

The thing is this guy commissions regularly and sometimes forgets he even gave money to people to draw him something, so its in the realm of possibility.

>"Hey man, thanks for paying for my drawings so often. I really appreciate knowing I am good enough to sell my art and I want to give you this"

If you don't add "freebie" to the end of this statement it still sounds perfectly reasonable but can fall into the trap I did. You are using hindsight to speak in an unnatural way to fix a problem that I didn't know could come up.

pretty bad redline bc im a /beg/ myself but i think you just generally need to pay more attention to what's going on in the images you reference. it looks like you just look at the pic to get a general idea of the pose and then wing it instead of regularly looking at it and paying attention to what you're doing. maybe try using refs for simpler shapes like a still life or something before you build up to the human body, so you develop an understanding of how to use references at all

The main issues I saw were the lower lip having an odd extra bump in the center, the serious tilt that the eyes had compared to the rest of the head, in the eyes, and the nose wings were extremely boxy. While the eye lids are much thicker than people give them credit for, it's generally unappealing to showcase it in a line drawing. At least I thought that was the underside of the eyelids I removed.

Didn’t mean ‘nuthin by it (assuming you were bothered by what I wrote and replied on account of that, as opposed to having a genuine interest in seeing my art get better); I shitpost here a lot to keep the thread from getting too boring. Sorry if anything about that image offended you.

>>6962209

This is often how I draw; I think the only time I ever slow down is on 1:1 copies (or rendering); I’ll keep that in mind the next time; my spastic way of drawing stems from the schizophrenia no doubt

This many (you)’s is surely a testament that adding some random nonsense to an image generates that much more activity in the thread, so why not? It’s just some disposable shit drawing that will be buried under all the other threads after a few days - who will even remember it 10 years from now? Mileage is the key.

Anyways, here’s a Loomis head rendered from imagination (the line art was a copy, but the rendering was imagination)

I might be able to redline you later, I’m busy right now. I’ll try to be constructive though.

First issue is your linework itself is not super appealing. There’s little variance to it. Imo I would lower your stabilizer but if you like a more Western cartoon look feel free to keep it up high. I’d just add some thicker blacks. Second is the anatomy, there are a lot of problems. The legs feel like they have no structure and just kind “hang” limp and flatly. They need to feel like 3d structures that could actually support her weight. Her head connects strangely to her neck, it’s like she’s got no “under chin.” Which is common with anime styles but they normally make the neck much thinner to compensate. Yours just looks like her head is on wrong. I would also say she does not have a very feminine face. I am really just assuming this is a woman because she has tits. Nothing about the face is giving “girl” though. Big nose, sharp chin, strong brows all give masculine. Which, I guess that’s fine if she’s just intended to look that way. Her hands are very big and masculine too. Her clothes are also very “drawn over.” They don’t have any weight or dimension. Just looks like you coloured her pink in some places. Revisiting fundamentals can help most of these.

My biggest thing for you is proportions. A lot of beginners draw heads too large. Study photos of people and observe how large the head is relative to the chest, how large the chest is relative to the legs. Just doing this will cause a huge leap forward for your art.

I started drawing in earnest like a couple of weeks ago. I bougth a sketchbook and i've been drawing on it every day, and it's fun. But my brain is small. Like, i get that i should to specfic practice and whatnot but that's just not very fun. I'm just finding random references like a specific frame of an anime i watched that i thought was cool, or some random art i found online and trying to copy it. If i don't know how to draw something specifically, i look for a tutorial on youtube. Is this ok? I understand that this could perhaps lead to solidifying bad habits. But then again maybe i'm overthinking it

The easiest way to improve I think, well, maybe easy isn’t the right word, but do still lifes. Just take a couple items, light them dramatically if possible, and draw what you see. If you get bored, go outside and draw something you see.

When you get more bored or want to work on something specific, do a study of it. There’s a lot that goes into studying if you’re doing to very seriously, so perhaps some YouTube will help you there.

>>6960444
Thank you. I think there is no one construction method. No rules, only tools. Just use whatever bits of conceptualization work best for you for that character/model in that pose at that time. It’s not a “do I use Tom fox or Vilppu or Hampton or Morpho or spheres or boxes” type thing. Learn ‘em all and use what makes sense to you. Some drawings, a rib cage makes better sense as a box. Some drawings it’s better as an egg. Morpho is good to bridge the gap between the final anatomy and the simple mannequin/gesture. It’s a good base on which to add anatomical detail or clothing.
>>6961601
What’s your end goal?
>>6961623
I recommend you check out the Love Life Drawing YouTube channel and/or Vilppu. I’d move on from these and try to just focus on getting more mileage. I wouldn’t worry about a timer.
>>6961682
Good! Do more! Pay a little attention to proportion, but you’ve got a good feel for gesture imo. For now, don’t bother with rendering or anatomy until you’ve either studied how light and shadow and edges work and have basic anatomy knowledge AND/OR save the more developed drawing for when you’re practicing accuracy and observational drawing. (With observational stuff I’d probably start with still life before figures)

depending on what you draw, it will realistically take a fair bit of time before you build a solid memory/understanding to use in imaginative works. if you want your stuff to look better, and your stuff looks better with construction than without, then do that. if you want to work on your imaginative abilities without using construction, practice it. and of course continue building an understanding of that subject.

Alright so I was on a semi-hiatus for a week, due to burn out/SAD etc.

I wanna start drawing more tomorrow, though I had been doing very simple 30 minute exercises for the past week (only 30 minutes a day).

I was doing the Burne Hogarth figure drawing book and drawing references with the drawings in that, but I stopped and now I Am not 100% what to do.

I am thinking of redoing a bird study I did in mid September to see how much I've improved, but I also just wanna try drawing fan art stuff and perhaps do more from life studies.

Anyone have any idea what I should do next? I have been only drawing daily (mostly) since late September, still very early on but have made great progress, just dunno what the next step should be.

Should I try drawing from life? Like a full body shot of a person? Should I try that? I was able to eventually get the hang of drawing this person's eyes at this angle from reference (somewhat some detail is missing) but I still struggle with good replication sometimes.

perspective is wrong, there isnt a single casted shade, there are no hard edges in core shadows, the line confidence is very beg, the face violates basic 3/4 view foreshortening rules, the figure is stiff, composition is boring.

I suggest isolating parts of your drawing process (like figures or perspective) and focusing just on that 1 thing for a while instead of trying to do full rendered scenes so you get more mileage and spend less time polishing turds.

Yeah it's not. You're not exercising your brains ability to dodge the enemy, work with teammates, execute a plan, catch a thrown ball that's sent the wrong way, quick planning and execution on your feet, adapting plans when mistakes happen.

One of the greatest artists in DC comic history told me to finish every fucking drawing. Finish every sketch. Fill every page. You are training your brain to make half finished work. If you're studying anatomy but nothing else, you are not learning perspective, lighting, how to draw furniture, trees, grass, cars, buildings. You won't master making mannequins and suddenly master making a finished piece of art.

I think the problem is choosing the style for the character. The face is drawn simple and cartoony, while the rest looks overly detailed in juxtaposition. The problem isn't just the hand size; it's that they look more like a life drawing while the head looks like a 90s cartoon.
There are lots of cartoon characters that use human anatomy as the base for characters, but they have properly simplified parts that don't clash with the design. Bugs Bunny has an obvious human skeleton shaped body, but his limbs, joints, neck, hands and feet are drawn very streamlined with very little detail.
If you're still learning figure drawing, keep doing it, it's important, but also try thinking of ways to make your design more consistent in imagination drawings. Look and copy the methods used by your favourite illustrators. Reference some cartoons or comics that you would like to emulate and pay attention to how they stylize different parts of the character. Think of what you want to show with that character and decide on the design with purpose.

I used just a preset flat brush at 50% opacity throughout the painting, try doing more trad studies where you break down the values in either light or dark. If you have high contrast from the start you can tone it down as you go but if you keep lightening darks which are already quite close to the light family you end up with lots of rubbing and not much painting.
Darken your darks, lighten your lights. If you are consistently making the same mistake you are not the problem but the process you are following may be faulty/designed to make you fail

Don’t post it, do some side trad practice along your digital studies. It’s the kind of exercise that takes some take to show results, other resource I found pretty useful was the 3h long Steve Huston lecture on beginning head drawing, you can find it on yt for free. The key is mileage, developing the skill to quickly set up a sketch you can then refine into a painting with ease.
There are anons here who waste hours just on a sketch and if that’s your thing, good for you but if you gotta paint for a client or a personal project it’s a nightmare to get bogged down by just lines.
If your problem is shiny graphite try using a pen, it will teach you line economy too and make you think about each stroke you lay down, you know more mindful work will result in a better growth trajectory

Another exercise and this should be actually more useful to you since you can already paint is to do value breakdowns, use a simple digital pen brush no texture nor fancy brushwork just pure value and try to make a simplification of the main value masses you are observing.
What I mean is that you should try to group all the shadows in one clear shape and all the lights in another complementary shape. One should be the negative space of the other.
Likeness isn’t achieved when we paint the wrong shadow shape and don’t check it against the surrounding light shape enclosing it.
Forget about eyes, noses, eyebrows, hair, lips, anything that has a darker value than your average tone on the canvas is grouped into one simple value.
Then you can add variations later, but this first step is the key because with this mentality you are approaching the whole subject from a painting perspective from the start

From what I’ve gathered of the replies, and from what I remember doing during this portrait, I have a tendency to keep my block-in in the 45-65 range (0-100 value scale), consequently, my current problem is that I’m keeping the value range TOO constrained at the beginning, which means that I have to continuously “rub” the darker darks and lighter lights in (as one anon described), rather than having established them earlier at the beginning, where it’s also much easier to do so (since the forms are “softer” and more malleable, not as developed yet)

Whereas, in this latest portrait, I was trying to “brute force” the darker shadows / lighter lights in at a much later stage, where that’s significantly harder to do, and also extremely inefficient since all the main forms have already been developed or “hardened” by that stage

Here’s one of my earlier studies from June of this year; I used to be on the other side of the extreme and would block-in literally the exact values that I saw, without developing the forms more slowly, so some of my latest studies have been trying to correct for that error, though it’s resulted in some “overcorrecting,” since my block-ins now look a lot weaker than most of my earlier studies

I’m sure I’ll hit that perfect middle-area soon.

God bless everybody here, and this board!

I owe my life to it.

If you can’t pick the proper values, try doing color picker exercises choose any ref make several squares at random points then try to find the matching color for each square using the color wheel.
When you are done check back by actually color picking and seeing how far off you were, was the saturation too high? The value too dark? Or maybe you chose the wrong hue altogether, accuracy improves with time and focused practice.
When you move to color keep in mind increasing the saturation also increases the value.
Some hues, in their base color are invariably darker than other hues even when they are on the same value step of the digital color wheel.
Keep the value and saturation the same, just move the hue around and lay some patches of color, put on the greyscale filter, you will find yellow and green shall almost always be lighter than the other hues at similar value steps.
The reverse is true for red/blue, so changing the hue is also a way to increase or decrease the value

It honestly just needs more contrast. Yeah, values could be refined, the shadows could use more tightening up, and construction needs work, but an easy fix would be to adjust values.

I think you are choosing hard poses to draw, try drawing the same pose but in a 3/4 view, this will be easier because now you have a well defined x,y,z axis instead of a profile view where one dimension starts to get heavily distorted. Keep going, you are doing great.

Hunting for exact reference is a sure fire way to end up doom scrolling rather than drawing. You can try using references that are related but not quite what you're looking. I had a similar issue in pic related wear I couldn't find a good reference for quad-tails on an actual person, but I could find several pig tail pics and a guide to parting hair. Usually the style can still be broken down into simple shapes you can construct from a different angle so I suggest trying that before just givving up.
