If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

What if we are all inside an anime right now?

Beginner artist faces a block where he feels he is not making any progress. Fed up, because he feels like he is wasting time, he tries urban sketching to gain a new perspective. Outside, he meets many new people, an art collective that is eager to include him, and an interested woman appears, however, seizing the new opportunities forces him to face his past that he has been running from.

Why don't I just go straight to drawing what I want and trial/error my way there instead of dumping hours on gesture drawing that half the time I don't even know if it's correct or not, and everybody got their own interpretations for with nothing objective to measure against?

Yes. I mostly do gestures as warmup in about 60 sec, preferably under 30 sec. I would look at them later and realise how some motions can be solved better, but it would require developing appealing way to express form.
When doing morpho bit by bit, while it was not a magic solution to all body mapping problems, taught me how to quickly sketch with light lines to get correct proportions, and to simplify things better. Though the simple fact it gives a lot of mileage is good enough too. Not that afraid of feet anymore.

I'm terrible at structured approach, lol. I usually would begin with some warmup boxes, cylinders, beans just to make sure I can move my arm where I need it. Then do whatever book I'm currently on (figure, perspective, faces), maybe do some face copies or body copies or whatever to clock a couple of hours in.
I saw this anon, who would do copies of different things, and then draw made up scenes with them in different angle or interacting with something. It looks like a very good practice, and I would like to start doing something similar. Maybe just trying to study your subject from different angles in general, like you would do a box or a cylinder.

How many of these can you anons actually read?
I'm very disorganized with them and often just pick another space on the page quickly thats empty when the next one starts. 30 seconds for each one.

I actually think i understand why permabegdom happens
A big reason seems to be not drawing enough and getting stuck on the same things without trying to progress or expand upon the fundamentals. If you get stuck doing gesture, it's likely because you're overthinking it or trying to perfect it when it's not necessary. You shouldn't exclusively do gesture.
It really just boils down to overthinking and not moving on with a certain subject or sticking to it too rigorously. You're going to suck if you only study loomis, but not only that, but if you don't expand your knowledge on other fundies also.

>> No.6958301

Good question. I see it more as an exercise, but I do feel I am learning a bit from Proko. I'm trying to be less hard headed about where I get my knowledge from and just trying to do the work and understand. I feel I am better understanding and more open minded to what Proko is trying to say so in that sense, yes.
The gestures themselves I see as an exercise, a muscle to be built up. Think of it like lifting a weight, I'm not learning anything from it but it is making me stronger overtime and better at lifting weights.

>these are actual gestures holy shit, that is super rare in this general. 99% of anons makes contours or 3D figures and says its gesture. Though i will say you are supposed to do other exercises as well along these, you dont learn if you do ONLY gestures
I'm trying to follow this because I like the structure but it also switches things up
https://www.brendanmeachen.com/soloartist

That said, I want to say it's only 20 gestures as proko said, but you are correct and I have to admit I have not been doing other exercises. I'm gonna progress through the course and aim to add more exercises to do. The bean is next.
I've actually done gesture before, so I'm not truly a total beginner, but I wouldn't call myself skilled either. I'm going back to get a sense of structure while learning fundamentals. I'm really trying to be patient with it to understand and using the whole suggested 4 weeks.

I actually did the composition one first because I wanted something new and that was interesting and fun to learn.

BASED. I just finished Morpho simple forms last night. These look amazing, anon! You’re almost done!
>>6957975
I’ll second >>6957983 and say that if KTD isn’t really hitting the spot, then Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain might help. Or promo’s beg course, or Brent Eviston. You’re doing symbol drawing and need to practice your observation and accuracy, so you can learn how to draw what you actually see rather than drawing what your brain thinks you see. It’s the very first step that we all have to go through, and a skill set we all have to maintain.
>>6957993
You get the overall sense of the pose, proportions, perspective, however you feel works best for you. Some use scribbles, others use rhythm lines. You make sure the landmarks are right, and you block in the figure with simple forms. Next, you flesh it out with anatomy and/or costume if you want. Flipping is a good source to learn from, but can be too esoteric for some. Also these are two VERY good, clear videos on gesture and figure drawing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAY5N76VP8M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH6E_n51-BQ
Doing lots of gestures is an important part of gitting and staying gud.
>>6958001
Why’s the box/drawer full of pubic hair?
>>6958009
Yeah. I’d also add Hampton as a good resource for figure drawing. I’d probably go through his book before doing Bridgman and maybe before/while doing Morpho. I think you want to get some basic idea of anatomy before you start copying Bridgman. That’s what I’m doing, anyway.
>>6958014
Neat, but your observation/accuracy needs work. Look at how little cheek there is on the right side of the ref, and how much cheek you added to yours.
>>6958048
I fucking love the fat one. That’s beautiful work.
Agreed about Morpho being good mileage.

honestly, the studies have kinda been fun. i don’t draw much outside of basic fundamentals and rag dolls like these because i don’t know if i can make a convincing character. i was thinking of practicing by drawing manga/anime characters. griffith from berserk and mugen from samurai champloo namely.

i just think learning how to do all this is pretty neat (:

Some poses from imagination. What’d I fuck up the worst?
>>6959426
Thanks. I like the attention and the thought that you put into your drawings. A comic sounds perfectly doable for you. Although… your art style is cozy and charming, so you probably shouldn’t do a coom comic. But everything else would work just fine, including horror. You’re already good enough that you don’t have to put anything off until you’re “better.” With your style, you don’t need much extra. Maybe some simple watercolor if you really wanted, (maybe for like a title page or something). But as far as anatomy and rendering and complex perspective goes, you probably don’t need that. Unless you want to draw a coom or mecha comic or something. But I’d be shocked if that were your goal lol.
>>6959430
:) seems you’ve made it, anon
>>6959436
Yeah I like studies too, desu. I love learning new stuff. I think I need to try to do more stuff from imagination and just for fun, though.

I think Kim Jung Gi has some, I think Krenz might have some. Modern Day James has some YouTube videos about it I think. I don’t know and haven’t gone through anything. I want to, though. I’d like to be able to draw characters in all different dynamic poses and perspectives. I can;t even find a good hyper angle pose reference pack. :/
So I’m just winging it at the moment.
>>6959453
Lighting looks right, your drawings are super cool. I think his oblique looks a little weirdly bunched/wrinkled/knotted up, but only slightly and even then I could be wrong.
>>6959457
Oh, okay. Yeah, no problem. Here’s some more stuff then. This time purely from imagination, without any references whatsoever. I think copying Morpho has helped. Especially with my understanding of forearms and how the brachioradialis moves to find the thumb.

A reference is just part your basic research into an idea. It's unlikely to be exactly the pose you ultimately want just like your initial idea is unlikely to make it unchanged into the final product. You don't have it because you want to photocopy it into your final image, but it gives you an idea of the weight and flow and structure you're going for. Looks good! If you want to make it look a teensy bit better, I would:
- Fix the color on the rightmost apple (the one behind the big apple).
- Focus more on cleaner gradients Adding a small border of yellow-green between the green/red might be

Day 28 of learning the basics n whatnot. didn't have much time to draw today, but I managed to squeeze in some animu(attempted Horikoshi's style since that's my goal) heads and a lil bit of torso stuff. was fun applying what i've been learning about heads to what I actually want to draw, even if they came out extremely messy. also, i quickly realized i don't know how to draw hair, or more so I have no visual library of hairs/anime hairs? lmao. if that's the phrase for it idk. same goes for animu eyes. guess i just need to look at more refs

You don't seem to understand the 3/4 view either. Draw more boxes to understand 3d forms better

Thanks, I think I see it
Thought just doing the construction enough times and seeing where it went wrong would help me with forms eventually but I guess I'll grind boxes for a bit

I was, but when I tried to construct from reference like that it always came out wrong that's why I decided to just do more basic construction by itself but looks like my problem is even more fundamental

The simple way to start off any 3D Cube/rectangular prism is that in one point you start with a square, and in two point you start with a vertical line. Now what you did isn't actually wrong, it's just in isometric perspective.

>>6958159
Lookin good. Whenever I have trouble shading I remember to go back to the 5-value system, and start with blocking in my shadow shapes before anything else. Your beetle looks nice and shiny!

>>6958716
Don't be so hard on yourself. This looks fine, just do more. And try setting different time limits. Like do a set of 6 3-minute drawings, and then a set of 6 5-minute drawings. For every drawing, aim for being as complete as possible.

Would any kind anon be able to red line how to draw a skirt in this position?

I have no idea how to make it actually 'wrap' around the correct parts of her legs here. I'd like the middle area to be somewhat visible from the 'stretching' of the cloth so that her pantsu can be visible.

I really like this anon, you did good work, if you did not tell me, I would have guesed this is actually from a PC game.

One thing though. I think the girl on the top left is not fitting. THe right person upside down is ok, but then you look at the left and you start to think, its not right, the picture is upside down. I think it mayy be good to just sacrifice her and remove.

>>6961254
just make the hair wit hthe same technique you used for the body and learn to do it well (fewer lines) and its good

Sorry I just researched the blue picture. I thought the whole picture you posted is one composition and your work, now I see that only the green water pic is yours.

In this case I think you perfectly nailed down the vibe/style, but you know, on the picture of the right, the water has a purpose, on your pic, it's just an anime girl above water. Looks good still, but you get me. You should mkae a whole wallpaper and post it here so I can see it.

Oh I was so nearsighted I missed this. I was so focused on the art style itself that I forgot about composition. Also, I could have made her hair and clothes look more wavey to show the flow of water.
>You should mkae a whole wallpaper and post it here so I can see it
I was aiming this to be my mobile wallpaper, hence vertical look

Was trying out brushes. Don't like how the sketcher pencil comes out looking like a crayon but the finer pencils don't hide the mistakes.

I wish I could make my sketches look like this, Not too messy or too clean.
