When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

What if we are all inside an anime right now?

Beginner artist faces a block where he feels he is not making any progress. Fed up, because he feels like he is wasting time, he tries urban sketching to gain a new perspective. Outside, he meets many new people, an art collective that is eager to include him, and an interested woman appears, however, seizing the new opportunities forces him to face his past that he has been running from.

i am not sure what more do you expect from such shitty medium like cheap pencil is. IMHO you already maxxed out skill for that medium. If you want it more detailed or fancier you gotta cheat and bring new tools: precise eraser, knife for making long sharp surfaces on the lead ala charcoal, more different pencils for better values and even q-tips (the thingy you stick into ear) for blending

i think his arm is too short unless you wanted to draw in foreshortened at an angle, in that case the foreshortening isnt clear. When you were drawing the logo you broke the forms and lighting. Next time simply draw his suit like its all from latex, then draw the white shape on new layer and playing with opacity and layer blend modes until you find one where it "sums" up both layers nicely

I'm very early in learning digital art and wanted to know what kind of workflows people use to color.
I've seen three major styles so far being shading over flats with grayscale, laying flats down and blending new colors using blending layers, and starting with colors skipping lineart then blending.
I know there are probably many other workflows and styles but does this seem right for some of the major popular ways to do it?

Attempting to learn gesture. A bit lost honestly, reading how it's done and watching videos of it being put into practice, it seems others will emphasize a single form with way more individual lines, say like 4 or so separate gestural lines to make up the whole of one leg. That's what i was trying to do with the first 4, but I got so fed up with bunk proportions and bad flow i did the last one by trying to simplify to the absolute most common denominator and while i like it a whole lot more, it feels like im missing the point.

I'll give it a go. Also, the top right red gesture piece is kinda what i meant. The gesture lines for the leg you circled is made up of a couple relatively complex lines, what i was trying to emulate, as opposed to if i had done it as i did my fourth attempt, id have done a single straight/slightly curved line from the hip to the foot.

I also don't really see why that line was chosen in the first place, like why gesture inside the leg there rather then follow through the ass down the bottom contour of the leg.

Make sure to always have a process that you can reliably replicate, anons. If you find a process that you like or is new to you (although the overlap is immense), Take it slow. Get good at the first step of the process and start with simple subjects until you get good at those. Then move onto the next step of the process.

>>6955236
Thanks Anon. Nice charcoal drawing. I think planar analysis of the head and skull would bring you a long way to making more confident and interesting marks. The line that you have on the edge of the face lacks characteristics of muscle vs bone vs fat. Degas has a particularly nice reclining nude that I'm thinking of that would be perfect for this. This channel is pretty decent too
https://www.youtube.com/@fineart-academy/videos

>>6955230
Thanks. I figured since I'm trying to communicate to another person to be explicit in what I'm doing. I don't normally decide to paint in this manner or use layers so rigidly but had to separate them to make the process obvious in pic related

>>6955263
Normally, I go straight into softening my middle value into my light and shadow. Here I chose to soften them a little later during the overpainting phase and did so by picking a color between the middle value and light value.

>>6955264
I find it difficult to help them since I don't know whether or not they practice as I advise them to. I'm not exactly in the same room or seeing them on video. I try telling this anon that they should focus on developing their accuracy and observation so they can emulate their favorite artist correctly, only for them to become distracted by superficial things like anatomy or style. I find that anons seem to worry about style when they really shouldn't, the word seems to get in the way of their artistic development. Style is a natural occurrence of what information you've digested and assimilated. It is a matter of training rather than taste. Practice what you enjoy and it will come.

mostly it's the muscles and proportions. biggest thing you need to avoid is the big, round 'bubbly' muscles, especially the chest and shoulders. try for more sharp, defined edges. the small head and softer facial features also scream bara.
look up some fanart of muscly characters, for a lot of them you can instantly tell which ones are made to be homo-erotic and are in the bara style. although there will always be a bit of a grey zone because of the common traits.

Stop hating and start loving, it doesn't matter that it looks bad or beg, that is part ofthe process. You won't magically become a good artist, everything takes sweat blood and tears, for every skill there is. Look at your drawing and ask yourself why it looks bad, what you can improve, and then learn about that. There is no shame in being bad. If you give up, that is the shame. You just need to keep going and self critique in a good and constructive way. As so many said, talk to yourself like you would talk to your son or your younger self when they drew something. Always be positive and never negative, there are studies that literally researched this stuff, you always need to be able to take critique, but also encourage yourself to keep going, it's a balance. Black and white thinking is bad, use your brain and be logical and good. Amen.

so. this is it. 4 years, many resources, scoured through the usual suspects of beg books, attempted exercises over and over and over, watched hundreds of youtube 'tutorials', quit a few dozen times, came back even more times, even did drawabox until it got too hard.
and what have i learned so far? how to draw a box. a good box? no, don't be ridiculous, but a box nonetheless.
so i'm calling it. this will be my final stand. tonight, i'm going to start the video course version of picrel. if, perchance, weeks, months or years into the future when i finish this course, if i STILL can't draw anything that even remotely resembles what i want to draw (furry bitches), i am going to use myself as a case study into how not anyone can draw. i'm starting to believe talent is real and i don't have it.
if i fail the last thing i've found that i can potentially use, i don't want to hear a god damn thing from this board about 'ANYONE CAN DRAW, JUST DRAW HOWIE'.
but i pray that won't be the case.

It depends, what's you're goal?

If you want to practice value control over a flat shape, the proko exercise is fantastic in attempting to achieve even tones as well as make interesting decisions regarding the shapes themselves. If you want to keep doing what you're doing, research how light falls on form. Plenty of books on this, Steven Zapata has a course on shading. Simplify drawing and Painting has constant reminders in his videos on keeping values organized regardless of hues.

Look into Color and Light by James Gurney Page 46, he starts talking about modeling factors and the characteristics of each factor for the entirety of chapter 3. Pic related, Form light and Form shadow just refer to where the light is hitting the form and where it does not. The Marco Bucci video that's below calls this the light family and shadow family.
This is a great video regarding the modeling of form and is overall just fantastic information for painting and drawing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ5QF0q4QqQ&t=613s&ab_channel=MarcoBucci

I also think edge control and variety is lacking in your work and that you should look to how other artists you enjoy create their edges, ideally in the same medium.

my mindset is to learn how to draw anything using methods that everyone here shills, but so far i've just got a box and no method i know to refine that box down to literally anything else.

I really liked Bargue Plates, the method of construction is exactly what I use to construct stuff. Im not going to explain this one, just watch a video, but basically you are working with very few lines first, no curves and then gradually get more specific
Another thing that helped me is Bargue showed me that I dont need to render hard to make a good work, some of the plates just have two values, white and black and they look epic as fuck.
Honestly just do your research, I mean, Bargue Plates are about copying, there's a lot more to that process than it sounds at first.

you should work on the forms of some of the muscles more, like the serratus I can see in the original painting that it curves over the ribcage because of the viewing angle, similarly you drew the far pectoral with a curve that I don't think is accurate, it's not flexed so it should just be flowing into the shape of the delt rather than bulging. also regarding the serratus: more of it should be be visible since it inserts into the upper oblique further towards the abs. the forms of the abs themselves are too flat as well.

nothing about this brings graffiti to my mind, study and watch graffiti timelapses, things I have noticed from watching some people IRL:
- stencils means that the line art will be always broken
- they use plates or paper sheets to mask the paint can in order to control the the diffuse area of the spray.
- the distance between the can and the wall relates in how focus or diffuse the spray is
- when they paint is always in short strokes and following the form like bandages.

Hello bros. Oldfag here who hasn't touched a pencil in 2 or 3 years. Sorry for the long post but I feel utterly stuck. These are some drawings, all from imagination with no reference. I feel like I don't have the patience and fortitude to push through and there are far too many issues I have to work on. A few glaring issues
>horrible lineart
>have issues drawing what I see and especially with proportions
My objectives
>concept art an character design with an ability to switch styles, both to make cool monsters and thicc anime gals

I have a few hundred pages filled with hand exercises, boxes and perspective, Peter Han's organic shapes, quick gesture drawings, anatomy and sketches from imagination. try mirroring your art periodically so you dont get desensitized to it. even looking at it now as i type im noticing it less and less.
i see you drew a loomis head. you can tell the head should be straight because the brow line is perfectly horizontal, and foreshortening would actually cause the chin and mouth to tilt to the upper left of your picture (or towards the horizon, if you want to think of it that way) instead of to the upper right like it is now, but overall the effect would be very subtle at a typical focal length.

alright gamers here's my self critique:
Beginng, Loomis stage
- Vertical center line didn't completely get the tilt correct
- Circle representing skull minus jaw was too wide I believe
- because of the vertical line not being tilted enough, the brow line I drew was horizontal, not taking into account the tilt

Post-Loomis
- Eyes were close to relative size but they were horizontal, and her right eye was too large, although the shape was kind of close
- Nose too small and didn't take the tilt into account, tip needed to be larger and more angled
- Lips look uncanny because they're too far from the nose and the lips were actually tilted correctly. The shape isn't too far off, either. Also relative size is pretty close if you look at where they parts meet relative to the eyeballs
- Brow isn't tilted and also the shape is way off. I did them last which sort of explains why I was finding the shape of them to be odd
- Chin too wide, probably due to messing up at the loomis stage
- I originally thought the forehead height was off, but I think it's pretty spot-on, it's just the head is too wide so it distorted the shape of it

If I missed anything feel free to chime in. I'm about to dive into another portrait practice

Been using a simplified Loomis method for a while now and just followed the first thing that popped up on youtube for the reilly method. Are you expected to use the full process every time you draw a head? It seems ok if you're studying or planning on painting, but for line drawing this seems overkill. You're almost there, but not quite.

Use a reference photo of a real woman for the shading and highlights of skin and hair. You may want to map out the form like some artists do to help them feel the form. Her jaw should have less of a curve. It looks like a waddle from age or being fat. Her hair needs more deep shadows and contrasting highlights. Right now it looks dull which makes her look like a middle aged poor woman or peasant. I maped the side of her face where the shading looks the most awkward. The shadow on her cheek needs to be moved down and curved outward not inward to mirror her other cheeks curve.

The anatomy is a horror show but I adore that shading. Hurry and improve so I can get your blog when you make it.

Really cool. I actually like girl in the bottom left and top right more. I like their big expressive body language.

Drop Loomis, read this. You might be struggling because copying makes you use the math side of your brain, not the art part. You have to learn to recognize when your using which side of your brain and how to switch back to the art part.

Are you finishing anything? You have to practice everything at once. Make a full finished work with a background as often as you can. That's how you practice and learn everything at once. Use references if you need to. There's no shame in doing something successful artists do.

The point is body language. Make big expressive body language. If you don't like, you don't have to do it. I prefer to make full fleshed out figures in dynamic poses over simple ones.

Do everything at once. It's a crab trick that you should learn in specific orders. They want you to feel fed up and burned out from trying to master things one thing at a time.
