to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

So a post last thread mentioned I should try figure drawings

I notice posts online mentioning proportions (ranging from 7, 8, 8.5, and 9), and chose 8.5. I drew the head outline first and pasted it a bunch of times, is this fine at first?

I'm not much good at drawing two hands when the arms are crossed and I couldn't find many references for that, should I just have one hand folded into the crook of the elbow?

Also I feel like I made the hips too wide, any advice for proportions and figure design?

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

I know it is a sin but I can't help but feel jealousy at artists in these threads who are so much more innately talented. They just form bodies like it is no big deal. Oh well, all I can do is continue trying gesture.

Are there any resources for me to memorize regarding "pre-prepared curves?" Step 6 refers to this idea but surely there must be a catalogue of curves to memorize here.

Hi anon. To be frank with you, I've been drawing since I was a kid and wanted to go to art school. But I stopped drawing at all for over 10 years because I went the STEM route in college and abandoned art. Drawing Basics - This is probably the best new beginner course for someone who knows literally nothing. Pay for it, pirate it, whatever you need to do. It's actually still in progress at his site.
Figure Drawing Fundamentals - Once you're ready to start tackling, or at least fiddling with, figure drawing, start this up. Don't get too hung up on gesture, since you'll be doing a lot of it for your whole life anyway. Understanding the basic structure of the body is probably more helpful at first. The bean, the mannequin, etc.

Brent Eviston:
Art and Science of Drawing - I went through this on skillshare with a free code back in 2022 or so. Good teacher, explains well. Do the homework. Should be available in the video courses thread.
Figure Drawing - Same thing with the Proko figure drawing course - use this as another resource to learn figure drawing

Hampton's Figure Drawing: Was actually very helpful for me (video course and book)
--

Perspective and Rendering Stuff:
Marshall's 1994 Perspective Course: It's relatively short, simple, there's homework. Just buy it, it's like $10 on his website. It's also on the video course thread.

Also, make copies of art that you like. I like megaman zero, castlevania, and final fantasy. Make sure you're working on personal stuff that's not for books or classes as well. I think this is the thing that has kept me drawing consistently since I've started again this year. And literally just draw things that are in your immediate vicinity, and draw every day. Make it a habit.

I'm going through Vilppu's renaissance figure drawing right now, but I don't know if I would be getting much out of it if I hadn't gone through a more straight forward course like Proko/Hampton/Eviston first.

So I began with drawabox and the number one rule that was drilled into my brain, the only think that mattered desu, is that I learn to draw with confidence. That the line that I place down via the ghosting method is the line I should be proud of is correct.

Then I'm looking at how Hampton does gesture and he suggests placing lots of light lines over and over, he seems to do five passes or so, then does a darker line. So I guess all that I learnt in Drawabox is antithetical to gesture drawing?

Cute. Mind the placement of the nose, it's still three dimensional. Hair looks good, but you should avoid those super thick lines, it seems to be without purpose. Also the clothing is kinda whacky, draw the figure underneath and use proper reference.

>>6942156
Good, but try to block out the shadows instead of trying to render. Also use some construction or gesture instead of just trying to focus on the details.

>>6942139
That's just wrong. Gesture has everything to do with line quality and economy. Yes, it's about shape and weight as well, but it's the lines that inform about that. (Unless you block in the shapes painting, which is a legit way to do a gesture)

What's this bump? Above it is the nipple and below it is the rib cage?
Or is that the rib cage and below it is the stomach?

>drawing for a little over 2 months now
>doing well, getting the hang of figure drawing, perspective etc
>next step is apparently anatomy
>spend some time researching into it over this past weekend
>suddenly feel like shit and have no motivation to draw
it's not even that it's about how hard it is, but I guess it's recognizing that now my time of free constant improvement is soon to be over and i'll be just another person that can't see their own improvement due to how slow it will be

i think it's a mix of impatience and self doubt, do you guys have any recommendations on how to deal with these feelings? I don't want to quit, I can't really imagine quitting, but continuing seems equally as hard

>> No.6942322

you literally have the "hang" of both figure drawing and perspective. You already made it over an incredible hurdle and if you stopped now I'd still be jealous how you mastered that over two months. Be proud you are in the percentile group that actually improves during the initial step and doesn't sit at step 0 stagnating.

Nothing you ever do in life can ever be fueled by emotions because these run out very quickly. They can provide an initial rush necessary for you to get into something but they won't sustain it for long.
You essentially just need to replace your motivation with willpower and routine. Try drawing around the same time in similar conditions. After a while you'll feel weird if you don't.

As someone dealing with both (unmedicated) ADHD and depression I get where you're coming from. All I can say was that drawing immensly helped me to improve my mood, it makes my days a lot more purposeful and brighter. ADHD makes sitting down and starting to draw really, really fucking hard. But once you make that step there's a good chance hyperfocus will kick in. As a professional artist I have to kick myself in the butt every day to get started, but once I'm actually drawing I can draw for hours on end. There are a lot of resources and testimonials online about how to work around the pitfalls of ADHD, but in the end you have to find your own way. To make starting to draw less daunting it helps to set a super small goal that you can achieve within a few minutes. Having your goal simply being to draw or doodle for 5 minutes is fine as well. Usually that helps to get into the flow. Sometimes it doesn't and then it's okay to let it be. Managing expectations and forgiving yourself aren't easy things to do, but I'm sure you can achieve that with patience and persistance. Keep it easy, life's hard enough without beating yourself down.

>Its just not in my nature to actually sit down and do things
It's not. For me neither. So all we can do is sit down and try. Grab a pencil, anon.

I don't wanna jump to any diagnosis but you might be right. I've never earnestly tried the five minutes method, i'll give it a try. I usually enjoy the process itself but starting off is tough. I've never drawn for longer than 3 hour at once though.
I'll stop gloomposting and just try to get into the swing of things. I know this is gonna sound bad but i gotta wake up in 4 hours so it will have to begin tomorrow.

> I never really understood Mattesi's force...
He never really defines the term in an absolute sense. Mike is not Beginner material, but it is good. taking the terms literally, Force is strength as an attribute of a physical action or movement. So Directional Force is the direction that force is moving from one point towards another. Applied Force is defined from the get go. It's the direction in which the mass is moving from and towards. Applied force is a bit easier to understand by observing centrifugal force. The mass wants to move away from the point of which it radiates. The path it's on is DF. It's difficult to represent something invisible through a visual abstraction. Having an understanding of animation principles, timing and arcs in particular, would be of great help. Here's what I ended up attempting to illustrate on a single muscle belly. Again, this is a pretty big concept to grasp so it takes time to understand. Also note how AF will follow along the DF or completely through it.

at first you need to draw from life to develop a sense for forms, after that you can do whatever
good for you if you can find something interesting to draw directly from life, but if not, it's no big deal
drawing a hundred things from images that actually interesting to you and increase your visual library is better than, say, drawinga hundred kitchen utensils from life, unless you want to be a still life artist

I read through a chapter and a half of the Full Solution and did two apples
Two questions:

Any recommendations on how to do mid-tones? Chapter two labels it as one step but it seems harder with change in saturation, diffusion, etc.

Is there exercises for edges? In the past I've been told if it doesn't look good blended, do harder shapes but then I don't figure out how to do soft/lost edges.

I just visited your blog out of curiosity and I must say your "wisdom" part of your website is actually good advice. Seeing your library made me a little bit scared. Did you read all those books?

Your constant studies are impressive, you never stop and actually draw which is something 50% of /beg/ don't even do.

Here is some critique though: Try to filter out useless parts and studies. I don't think copying these figures from the loomis beginner book helps you since you already copied so many other figures from other books. I think you should focus on the parts on which you feel the most insecure about.

You might wanna ask yourself why you're afraid. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. At some point, it's counterproductive.
You gain confidence by finishing pieces. The first X finished pieces will probably look kinda bad, but the X+1th might start looking good! Just be sure to try to learn from mistakes and all that stuff.

>>6944078
Yeah. It's normal. Have you tried measuring before you draw? There's several ways to help with this, but some things you can do are:
>Split your drawing area into a 3x3 grid. This tends to help me a lot when doing studies
>Estimate the proportions (for example, if the head is 2cm, then measure out 15cm for a standing body) and do a very rough sketch before advancing too much.
Tried giving advice, but more specifics might help.

I think David Finch’s idea of doing gesture every day and drawing from anatomy books is a good idea. I think apparently Will Weston’s “mindless doodle time” where he just idly sketches stuff is usually drawing from anatomy books. I think it’s about grinding the individual parts until you learn them, while doing figure drawings to incorporate it into your skill set. Personally, my plan to learn anatomy is to finish copying morpho simple forms and then draw through Bridgman. I do some gesture/figure drawings all the while.
>>6942748

Do keys to drawing or drawing on the right side of the brain or proko’s or Brent Eviston’s beginner course to learn observational drawing and accuracy. You gotta learn how to draw what you see instead of what your brain thinks you see. Also, just plain old getting more mileage will help you level up. If I were you, I’d do more drawings instead of spending a long time on one drawing. You’re doing some chicken scratching, but the first couple lessons of Draw A Box will help.

I don't fucking like what I'm doing
I'm doing Vilppu's first task from his manual, and *while* I am trying to do gestures I confuse the intention with the method
I *know* the lesson is "capture gesture by using just a few lines", but while I am busy, that devolves to "trace the outline, just use curvy lines" in my head, when I KNOW that's not what the intent is
Also fuck posting my work taking longer than the actual drawing
