If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

I've tried that grip before largely because of seeing more talented artists than me use it. I think you need to be working really really big for that grip to make sense, and I don't have the fine motor control to get the sort of smooth tapering or control the line width well with that grip. I generally just draw with a normal writing grip, but grip a bit further from the tip than I would if I was actually writing. I do draw relatively big to try working from the shoulder, but even on my 9x12" sketchbook that grip feels too small. If I ever feel like graduating from single character portraits onto a bigger paper I might try it again but overall would not recommend.

Decide what you want to do. You have a rifle drawn with strict adherence to perspective and clean linework and an anime girl with exaggerated perspective and form, and kinda sloppy linework. Are you retarded? It isn't ever going to ever read as a shadow if you color the whole thing a solid dark tone and add no detail. If you want it to read as a reflection, draw it as one. You can't fucking draw a shadow and expect it to look like a reflection.

I think there are a lot of things you could do. Looking with zero saturation can help you see absolute value better. It looks like the mushroom's highlight is much too bright. The way you've rendered her skin it looks pretty reflective and almost oily. Reflective objects tend to have sharper contrast from light to dark, and matte objects less so. Mushrooms are generally very matte. The biggest mushroom also looks like the cap is bent at a weird angle. It is pretty near eye level so the ellipse the cap follows should be close to flat. Also the disconnect between the incredibly high saturation and lack of texture on the mushrooms make them seem less real. With the blue glow, it should also be reflecting and illuminating her neck and clavicle area, and be tinting the reflections on her skin blue, though the main glow could stand to be less saturated.

Try to focus on having strong, definite lines/line-shaped clusters of both black, and popping color to give shape and volume to what you're making, then look at how it sits in relation to the white and add/swear off whatever feels incomplete or finished (the most challenging part is finding that end point and sticking to it). Eyes to nose distance is too much, wrap around Bowie's head should have different incline (you drew closer eyes collapsing down, while it should be rising due to perspective), and your construction is all over the place (granted this is normal as I believe construction is not meant for copying but drawing your own heads).
Try to pay more attention to how lines allign agains each other, use simpler construction (Loomi's head or asaro head), block out where main face point should be (eyes, nose, mouth, chin, eyebrows) very lightly first to get their placement and relative size better. Flip canvas, zoom out from the picture to find most glaring mistakes.

Starting out is likely to be extremely frustrating and depressing, but you have to push through it and continue pumping out trash so that future you can enjoy the fruits of your labor with the ability to express yourself through drawing.
Whatever you have to do to keep yourself drawing consistently, you should do it. Even mindlessly drawing lines on a blank canvas is far more productive than avoiding drawing altogether out of fear or laziness

It's titled Drawing Basics. It's 160. If that's too steep at the moment, pirate a course that's similar. Russian academic drawing with Iliya Mirochnik comes close. Brent Eviston has a course. These are both somewhere on the net. something that has helped me in the past when I had trouble was having faith in the 5 minute rule: that when you set out for yourself a task for 5 minutes - depending on the sort of task of course - once you get past the 5 minutes it is not that difficult (if at all) to continue for longer.

I did feel a sizzle in my pizzle but it fizzled. I quite like the ass and pose, love that you got the under cleavage in there, but the construction overall isn't solid enough for my tastes and her foot is a little mannish as well. I think what took me out of the sexual gaze state was her head (which doesn't appear naturally attached to her torso) and her left arm, which is way too high. With the angle the breasts are at, her left arm should be lower than her right. Not bad though, keep pushing, art is like masturbation itself, you'll get there.

Middle one isn’t that bad, it’s just lacking a lot of back anatomy like the scapulae and back muscles, plus the back of the thighs and the calves lack form and are disproportionate (while lower leg section is too short). Butt is also too flat. Your other drawings are good but it seems drawing the front/ 3/4th perspective of the body is your comfort zone so I’d say draw more backs if you want more success

I'm trying to practice 3 point perspective and rendering more realistic environments but the shelves and the stuff on the shelves look terrible. Should I just blur the background slightly so noone notices or is it fixable?

And the girl looks too large for the environment despite everything else drawn to make her look small. I have no clue why that is.

pick a vertical VP and stick to it (use a ruler to check your vertical lines)
the figure doesn't feel like it agrees with the perspective of the bg, but this is a hard angle try to find a reference for the foreshortened proportions and the orientation of the head.
>scale
you haven't provided enough context clues in the background, try putting more things on the shelves and also some identifiable things that the viewer definitely knows the size of. adding more objects will also provide more support to the viewer of where your VPs are. doesn't have to be more boxes either you can use alignment of the price labels or other patterns.

I probably should have clarified that at the time.
When I said tools, I was referring to the skills that you'd obtain throughout the course that become apart of your metaphorical toolbox. Measuring is a tool you use in the drawing process to accurately assess an objects angles and proportional relationship for instance. Mass Drawing (although it won't be called that) is another tool to further understand any given subject you may come across. These are critical and universal skills that'll only serve to help you make the art that you want.

Virtually all of these problems can be solved by studying construction + perspective + anatomy together in a rhythm. The fact that you're seeing these problems is evidence it's time you should move towards developing a deeper understanding of 3D space.

Construction + anatomy will teach you how to solve the shading problems on the face because it will reveal how planes function in regards to light sources.

Construction + anatomy will help with the leotard lines because you'll have a better conception of how they curve across the structure.

You also have other construction based problems. Her gloves for instance are not convincingly three dimensional. Studying cylinders and how they rotate in 3D will help.

After a pretty cruddy day yesterday, and I was pretty sleep deprived today, I did a decent amount of sketching, though I am not too happy with the results.

I did some sketches based on Flight of the Navigator, but I struggled with getting the details and spacing right (I was not putting my references on the same monitor), and I couldn't quite avoid symbol drawing at times.

I also tried doing some figure drawings in perspective (the character is SavannahXYZ's sona, in case you are wondering), though I struggled with hands and arms quite a lot. Also being tired meant I didn't have it in me to really commit to what I was drawing which didn't help.

I am just kinda...lost I guess? I am gonna do a redraw of a bird study I did late september to see how I've grown since, but in regards to drawing people do I just have to draw real life figures next?

No wonder so many give up it's just so tricky to figure out what you gotta do next. At least my motor skills are way better now so I can more equipped to do these challenging things now.

I appreciate how helpful you guys are btw, even if some of the advice isn't terribly helpful or comes across as rude (not all the time and I am talking about really vague and douchey types), I'm glad I've gotten very far to the point I'm starting to become legit addicted to drawing, just still not at the point I feel I can draw whatever I want in my head...

>My problem lies in that I am too shitty to fill it with anything worth a damn and too slow to make a dent on it with my meager daily time for practice.
What? It’s just a big canvas where you do your studies on. I do it because it’s a big canvas so I can draw bigger detailed stuff if I want, and I can spam repetitions and iterations of a concept I’m trying to grasp. I can see previous attempts right there which helps in the iteration process cuz I can see what I’ve been doing. It also helps with doing studies cuz I can see more easily which drawings I’ve already copied and which drawings to move on to. I don’t fill a 4K x 4K canvas in a day lol. So when I come back to it later on, it makes picking it back up easier. And uh… also… um… because I’m too lazy to want to keep making new layers all the time.

Like… it’s a practice sheet. A thing in which you just draw to get mileage and practice. How could you be “not good enough” to do practice? There’s no such thing as “too bad to practice”; that’s just goofy. “Ah I’m too hungry to eat.” It’s not for display. >I just don't want to shit up anons' requests and deny them being delivered by an actually skilled artist.
What? That’s not gonna demotivate other drawfags. That’s gonna inspire their competitive instincts to either one-up you, or just inspire them because they like the pose or design you did and wanna try their take on it. Like when everyone was coming up with Corona-chans on /pol/, or all the “draw this in your style” threads or whatever, there’s never any “one and done” thing. Actually a couple times when I’ve posted drawings and the ref I used a some other anons gave it a try. The only person whose art you’re at risk of stifling is your own. I feel like I can effectively study something for like 4, 5 hours a day consistently at most. After that my mind is a blank. I spend most of that time studying for school and I'm left with 1 or 2 hours to study drawing at most.

Feels a bit strange doing more sc-fi or fantasy art in traditional media when it seems so few do it in traditional media, most seem to have gone to digital. Almost feels like you're doing something wrong, but I try to tell myself that artists that exhibit stuff like squares of colours or random scribbles don't care and aren't afraid to be different. Albeit it seems all galleris cater to that sort of stuff, but still I shouldn't overthink what I paint, just paint. I just feel like there's no interest for paintings of robots or stuff like that. I guess with the internet there's a niche for everything, and everyone I've shown my stuff to has liked it, so what am I even worried about?

It doesn't matter anyway what I make, it'll all be gone one day, I should do what I like and enjoy and focus on getting better with that and if I want to make a bird one day, or a robot another then so be it.
I'm stuck in an overthinking procrastination loop. The longer it's been from a 'finished' work the more undue importance I put on the next.

What do guys you think?

work on your line weight with with the black lines. when it comes to using colored lines, the saturation and brithness adds in to the line weight. the outlines should be darker, and the inlines where volumes are less pronunced should be lighter.

your anatomy is very nice, but if you worked on the lineweight the quality of the drawing will improve greatly.

the reason the black lines look messy is because they are sketched, you didn't really do any line work

Google mike matessi force drawing, you need more curves in your figures, the goblin occupies way too little space while the space on the left with the dark background occupies way too much. Your figures right legs looks unatural for the pose you're trying to do, and overall your character looks bored and low energy while doing the action. Mike matessi. Pose is stiff, hand placement is a bit unnatural, the stance should probably be wider, the proportions aren't all that appealing but that depends on what you want, you'll be way better after some mileage it'll take time to shake off the tracer habits but at least you'll have strong quality if not placement

I would recommend figure drawing or photo studies like picrel

Use loomis as building blocks/framework to draw what you see anon. I can tell that you're latching onto a few key details (like the shape of her nostril), but not actually using construction lines properly. Establish perspective by drawing the eyeline and orienting the angle of the face properly. For self-feedback to help yourself improve faster, trace your own redline over the reference image and make sure to take note of these key landmarks. You do not yet understand Loomis (construction) enough. You will get there eventually anon, don't give up.

Also, don't even try to render yet until you have some grasp on form. It's just wasting time at this point.

I use an underdrawing that was traced yes, if you're talking about the level of color accuracy, that's from training my eye hundreds of hours. I wouldn't be the first human being that's achieved that, either. Jarod Erwin, Senior Concept Artist at Microsoft, recommends using an underdrawing as well

Here's my photoshop file that shows the individual layers of work - if you step through each one, you can see how each layer of color is based off of the previous one, thus, picking the next color is a matter of comparing what you already have on the canvas, to the reference, and then making a mark, and then checking if it's right (in other words, how I pick colors is extremely hierarchical and controlled, but I do not pick the colors using the eyedropper tool)

aHR0cHM6Ly9waXhlbGRyYWluLmNvbS91L3ZmY2hwTEdS

Perhaps using the Coolorus color wheel is "cheating" though, because it is quite easy to match the HSV of something using it

The beginning stage of the portrait has about five main colors that you use to sculpt out the largest possible blocks of form which will still describe the human skull (i.e. it still looks like a face when zooming out), if even that few colors is something that causes people to believe that I am colorpicking, then the old masters must have been interdimensional beings that came from the andromeda galaxy

My skill level would be less than a billionth of the old masters, and even then I get accused of cheating

Wouldn't somebody like Eric Barone (Stardew Valley creator who regularly worked 10-hour-days), who has spent thousands of hours just staring at pixels all day, also be able to guess with high precision, the RGB value of any given pixel?

And in my case I don't even have to subdivide to that tiny level of precision, if I get the average color right of a very large block of the form (which is very easy because you are not guessing the color of a single pixel) , then that's already more than enough to get the color looking correct, because you don't block in the gradient immediately, you start out with very large planes, and that's never more than three or four main values/colors in the beginning stage of a still life or portrait (at least in my workflow anyways)

If you ignore the gradients in this still life (by squinting your eyes, which automatically groups all the values / colors into one block), you can break the colors down to three, or even just two - even you could just literally drag the sliders around until the color-indicator looked like it would somewhat remotely match what's in the reference (unless somebody is blind or color-blind, anybody can practice color matching)

Autism question incoming, what do you see in your imagination before/when you're drawing and do you envision the exact line/stroke before putting it down?(not the anphantasia meme) Up until now, when imagination drawing the image i'd see would be a vague, abstract, impression of some "fuller scene" that only serves to capture the general idea/feeling but with no fine detail or clear edges, like squinting through a window smeared in a heavy layer of vaseline, and no amount of focusing would clear it up. But now, in trying to be more deliberate with each stroke, i've be trying to more precisely envision the exact lines and strokes before putting them down and it's actually done wonders for making what i draw more accurate to what im imagining even to the point of making my 3d forms more better and more "3d". But it's also like insanely difficult and taxing and i don't know if that's just because it's like unused atrophied muscle that with time will get easier to flex or if im just spiralling down an autism hole that not even pros bother with.
