The following is an invitation to follow an art book together with me.
Everyone is welcome, especially all the /nodraw/ and /beg/s out there (like myself).
Let's see if we can power up together.

What better resource to start with than the infamous "Draw Manga", published in 2004 by Peter Gray? Why? It's negative reputation and it's meagre length of 30 pages total will allow us to mercilessly PLOW through the content and DESTROY this book.
Should be a good idea to start small, right?

Full book can be found here: https://imgur.com/gallery/taXKeZT

The goal is to progress page by page and to copy all of its materials and extract any helpful text or lesson.

Please share all of your progress, even if you happen to join in late!

...I already regret submitting this thread..!
Let's GOOOOOOOOOOO

So, taking a look at the table of contents at the start: this book will teach us
>Facial Construction
>EXPRESSIONS
>Figures!?
and
>ACTION POSES
Sounds very promising.

>After you learn to draw Ariel, Blaze, Serena, and X-O-Dus with the materials provided in this kit you will be on your way to creating your very own exciting Manga pictures!

Woah! I can't wait.

>Page 5, Materials
lmao has this dude not heard of a STYLUS? I'll be drawing digitally of course.

>Page 6 first facial construction of OC Ariel
Upside down egg, throw on shapes on top, bada bing bada boom, holy shit it WORKS.

I went ahead and used page 7 as a reference for coloring. Since there is no word on guidelines, principles, or anything else on the topic I randomly used a little bit of everything to give that head some color...the results are spectacular and I also just noticed she lost her eyebrows during the process, whoops!

Note to self: Try drawing using a higher resolution & DPI. Stuff came out a bit small.

Now, onto bottom of page 7 and 3/4 and Profile view construction (I'm literally shaking).

Yeah, sale strategy probably. YouTube thumbnail bait precursor.

The next step was a little easier to get into the flow of her shapes but at the same time there's surprisingly little guidance. Caught myself glancing at page 6 a few times to see if there are really no other inbetween steps.

Pretty sure I fucked up both views, might have to redo. Triangle too high on the 3/4 view, egg shape too pointy and narrow at the bottom.
Not too many guidelines on the profile view, so instantly fucked up nose and mouth placement. Perspective on the crown beyond scuffed but won't stress over it for now.

Gonna try both graphite and colored pencil coloring on those next.

>Please Lord forgive me..

Lost a ton of time trying to figure out settings for a natural looking pencil/crayon shading tool. I thought this would be easier (I was wrong). The fat ink plus pencil aesthetic also really don't work together.
The result should speak for itself.

I consider skipping the coloring and just focusing on the drawing parts until I figure out something appropriate.

Maybe I'll watch some EZ coloring guides in my off time if it ends up looking too lifeless. Having at least one finished result per lesson would be nice.

His head gear messed me up.
Just said screw it and shifted down his eyes on the final ink, after fiddling with the V shape for ages, lol.

Two things I took away from this mess tho: When I had a clean ink of the head gear shape and its angles, instead of erasing and trying to add the (bone) segments, I should've just made a clean layer on top, working freely and eventually wiping the rough shape below. Instead, I had to erase multiple times and do a ton of unnecessary corrections.
Secondly, might be a good idea to zoom out every now and then as to make sure that the char hasn't suffered a sudden stroke of autism.

Gonna retry this one tomorrow, when I'm fully rested. Good night.

What a shitty tutorial book. There are far better resources than this. These "learn how to draw anime" books made by westerners aren't even very good. Pro tip: If the artist isn't Japanese, you should probably avoid it if want to draw like a mangaku.

>There are far better resources than this.
Yeah, there is no doubt about that.
Anime wasn't meant to be the main point of focus anyway. I agree about >>>/ic/asg

The idea was to get a DAD kind of thing going with a common objective. As for why this: it's short and a low barrier to entry. I saw it being memed over the years, but never actually seen anyone follow it seriously and posting their results.

If I end up making a follow up thread, I'll list some candidates and run a poll or something, so it's not all up to just me.

Personally, it helps me go through the motions without much resistance and as laughable as the progress and results are, at least I can say I didn't waste away my time on brainless media consumption or similar. I'm sure it'll be more fun once other people chime in.

I did something like this a couple of years ago, and I was rather interested in what the source for alternative drawings are, because some of them were done in what I considered to be rather competent late 90s early 00s art style.

its weird someone as seemingly competent as he is has not perform some sort of aesthetic analysis to break down elements of their respective art style to reproduce them properly. While I think some of the design he chose was too complex for children to instruct in such form, maybe they should have chosen better examples, and there should be plenty, maybe this is just boiling down to lack of research.

This was done in early 00s when anime was the hip new thing and maybe they were just rushing this out of the market, in some ways I actually kind of appreciate product of such viral quality, it really shows the cultural zeitgeist at the time.
