This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware.

Recommended tablets:
>Pen tablets (non display)
Wacom Intuos pro
Huion Inspiroy
Xencelab Pen Tablet
XP Pen Deco (v2 if you can afford it)

>Display tablets
Wacom Cintiq pro
Huion Kamvas
XP-Pen Artist
Xencelab Pen display

>Mobile tablets
Apple iPad Pro
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Surface Pro 8/9

>What tablets does /dtg/ use?

>General guidelines when picking a tablet:
- All of the recommended models are part of large lines with multiple sizes/generations available. Buy the biggest/newest in your budget. Medium-Large pen tablets or 16-24" display tablets are considered the sweet spot by most artists.
- If you don't see a tablet you're interested in listed, ask about it. This isn't a definitive list, just one to give you an idea where to start looking.
- Avoid Chinese tablets 4+ years old or made by literally who brands like gaomon, ugee, parblo, etc. They were generally dogshit, and the reason Wacom had a monopoly for so many years. Newer models from huion and xp-pen are much better.
- Wacom is still the industry standard, but they're overpriced and a lot of pros are switching. Chinese brands have mostly caught up in the past few years and will provide a near identical user experience for a fraction of the price.

buy SuperDisplay on the google app store to use the tablet as drawing monitor connected to windows, or use inbuilt DeX as an actual workstation, either way go to settings inside the samshit tablet to limit battery to 80%, stay connected to charger without killing battery; enjoy

13" display tablets feel tiny. 16" is the minimum you should go unless you're talking about a standalone like an ipad or galaxy tab, in which case the art programs they use are typically more tailored to fit a mobile UI. shit like CSP takes ~1/3 of the screen realestate with its side bars.

If that's all your budget allows for its better than nothing, but even then you can generally find 2nd hand larger tablets for as much as a new small one.

>>6902902
Yeah it's a great device for its price. Not sure what the other Anon was insinuating. If you're only exploring the hobby, then it makes no sense to burn a ton of cash on a screen. Almost everyone starts with a pen tablet, and some don't even move away from one, even after entering the professional realms.
Even for its retail of 70 bucks it's great value. If you get it for anything cheaper than that, then even better.
I remember paying around that exact price for my entry level tablet around 2011 or 2012, a Wacom Bamboo Small, which had a significantly smaller drawing area and far fewer features than you can get with an entry model nowadays.
As for the hand-eye coordination thing: it does take some getting used to but you should be fine after a couple of hours of practice. It's the same as using a computer mouse after all. One of the big advantages is that you can have it in front of you, easily reach your keyboard (if necessary) behind it and most importantly maintain an upright posture while you look straight ahead.

>>6902963
First, use your tablet more. And do so regularly. The more you use it, the more it will become second nature and your accuracy will improve. But yours is more of a vision problem. What software are you using to draw? You can either use external tools such as Yolo Mouse or Lazy Nezumi to replace your cursor with something more visible _or_ if your software supports it, enable something like a crosshair mode. TVPaint has a mode for instance where it extends your cursor's crosshair across the entire canvas for visibility. There's no way you'd be struggle to see what you'd be doing then. Maybe Photoshop, CSP, Krita, etc. have plugins for something like that.
Shittiest solution I can think of is to enable Windows' built in features such as cursor trailing or the find my cursor setting where when you press CTRL it highlights the position with an expanding circle... but probably not a good idea, lol.

It's just that it's in a similar price range as Huion H610 Pro V2 and Idk if I'm better off going with Huion. Huion and XP Pen are essentially the same brand, so don't obsess too much over it. They have very similar specs, same resolution (LPI) and pressure levels, as you said. The drawing area is identical too. I wouldn't be surprised if they're both manufactured in the same factory.
Go with whichever is cheaper if money is your priority. The extra goodies with the Deco sound good. Not sure how much a protective film helps on the Deco; meaning if it helps with tip degradation or gives it a nice paper like feeling while drawing. But I'd rather have one for experimentation than not have it.
Pens are also identical. Battery free, shape, come with two buttons.
Drivers should be solid if you're using Windows. People have had good and bad experiences with both, including myself. But if I had to take a favorite, it would be XP-Pen in this department.
The only thing I'd consider at last would be their quick access buttons. I'd watch some video reviews on how they feel and respond. If they feel cheap or hard to press. My second tablet was an Intuos 5 and it came with a weird condom rubber spanned over its express keys. Made pressing the buttons extra inaccurate and highly resistant. From the images I've seen, Huion's express keys look a tad nicer, but it's hard to tell which one are better. If I had to guess I'd say they are very similar, as every other aspect about them. Maybe express keys is not even something you'll be using. But who knows, maybe you'll reach a point where you shove away your keyboard, lean back and relax while drawing some and you'll appreciate your handful of tool buttons. After all, most people don't use too many functions: brush hotkey, eraser, undo, brush size +/-, hand tool, and eye dropper - plus one extra just in case. I suppose that's why most devices come with eight buttons total.

If you're willing to spend a bit more, you can probably get a 16 pro instead, or if you're okay with 2nd hand, it really just depends on what deals you can find. The color range on every tablet brand's base models (non pro/plus) is kinda mediocre, but it will be fine to get by.

another option would be getting a 2nd gen ipad pro, which you could still use after you get something else as something to draw with when you're away from your computer.

alright, final thoughts overall (was going to give it a few days but I don't see my opinion on anything changing with more time) on the kamvas studio 16
positives:
>identical drawing feel to my desktop tablet, I don't feel like I'm sacrificing anything to draw away from my desk (huge positive)
>large screen so CSP and other desktop apps still have adequate space for UI and canvas
>built in stand is the same as what's on surface pro, so a very good stand
>doesn't get very hot and no noticeable fan noise
>normal desktop windows
>responsive touch, not janky like the previous gen cintiq touch (not sure how mobilestudio is, but the cintiq I tried had unbelievably shit touch)
>good color/contrast
>good resolution/pixel density
>pen comes with a nice carry case

negatives:
>speakers are tinny garbage (just use headphones, but still)
>no screen cover to protect the screen when not in use
>much heavier than other tablets (ipad with a case weighs ~2.2lbs, kamvas studio is 3.75 on its own)
>no where to attach the pen when not in use
>$1700 fucking dollars
>don't like the slim pen that comes with it (purely subjective)
>large screen is a bit too big and doesn't feel as portable as my iPad (no screen protection and weight adds to this feeling)

Not sure where to put this, but battery life is ~4 hours, and takes like 90ish minutes to full charge from dead

lol these things have been $2000+ dollars for 20 years. Somehow despite mineral chains being wider. Somehow despite automation. Somehow even despite cheap alternatives.

They used to be affordable only by people that made it and the only other people that had used them were for work at a studio doing FX or whatever. They'd buy several Cintiqs at the asking price and return for replacements. So would another company. So on and so on. The wait on them used to be 6 months because they were the only dog and they were big. I think "the industry" (FX, animation, etc) buying these at ridiculous prices because they can is why the prices are so stupid.

I love Wacom but there's no way this price is still worth it. No wonder the brand wars for these things is so hot.

If it sucks, you should be able to find decade old wacom for roughly the same pric. They'll have the same problems with parallax and shitty colors, but you can still make good art with them. I've seen people selling cintiq 22/24hds for like $50-100 before.

Bros, any recommendation on ergo arms? I just installed a new one but it's too short and I came to realize that it's min height might still be to high, which means I need a model where the first arm isn't sloped upwards and can be lowered.
Ergotron seems to fit the bill, albeit quite expensive. I hear they are quite good quality.
Then, I saw one by Amazon Basics which fits the same criteria.
Last problem is the total arm length.
Due to my desk being so wide, 60ish cm in length isn't quite enough to get the tablet as close as I would like.
However, I can't seem to find any arms that are longer or have a triple joint. Any recs?

>>6934336
>What's your desk setup like? Do you have a keyboard tray, and how high is your chair's piston set? Rather than lowering height of your tablet, you might be able to gain height instead.
Pretty wide and long desk. I think around 140 cm in length, 80 cm in depth (that's why I wanted an arm that is ideally >70cm so I can mount it at the back of the desk and draw it as close to my body as necessary).
No tray. My chair is as low as it goes and still my desk is a few cm higher than I would love to have it at most times.
>>6934915
>as am ergo arm owner, I think just putting your tablet on a stand on top of a raised platform is a much better solution than buying an arm personally
Yeah that would have been the less head-achy solution but I wanted something that I can quickly push in and out of the way. It's the same with the included adjustable stands that all 20 inch + tablets come with. They're nice but also very bulky and you have to heave them in and out of position all the time. And more often than not you'll lose access to your keyboard, unless you drag it in front of the tablet. My KB is heavy and full sized, so having the tablet float in the air is another way to bypass this issue.

After lots of consideration I finally found something to hold the 15.6 Artist Pro comfortably. It barely fits the bill but it'll get the job done for now. As for the Amazon arm, I wasn't entirely sure if you could lower the first arm on the pole, so I sent a "ask other customers" meme and got 10 e-mail replies within an hour, that was nice.
The only major con with the Amazon device is that its forward tilt is limited, so coupled with the already tilted tablet holder, I can't quite achieve an upright 90° angle on it, which is fine since that's not really what I was shooting for anyway.

Gonna attach two pics, first shows a sample drawing position.

Not sure how a screen protector will fare with etched glass, have 0 experience with it. I would assume however that you are negating its entire purpose with a screen foil -> you lose the nice paper-like texture while drawing.

I would mostly want to use it for casual drawing when I'm not home (I use a XP-pen 16.5 normally) where I could then export files later to use on my windows PC if need be. I don't necessarily need it to be 12", 11" might be fine but some say bigger is better.
Also what retailers would /ic/ reccomend if not directly through apple?

For drawing, screen size will almost always be more important than performance so it's kind of a useless metric. And yes bigger IS better.

3rd gen 12.9 pro works fine. There hasn't been a significant difference in functionality since 2018 as far as drawing is concerned. Plus basically any accessory for a current gen ipad pro will still work with it since it has the same footprint.

>Working on huion device since years
Small cons:usb cables are shits, customer service is slow due to "video protocol"(proof) and time difference

I just want to make sure it can use a lot of layers, correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard procreate limits layers based on ram available.
I have a pc tablet currently just want something on the go. If the 11" is way cheaper I don't think it would be too bad either for my use case.

3rd gen can use the pencil 2 right? Would there be any real reason to gun for a newer gen at all then?

I'm the anon with the scratched tab s8. In my experience it's pretty much required to constantly switch the ui on and off with a shortcut to draw comfortably on an 11" tablet. I imagine a 12" would be much more comfy so I will upgrade to the s10+ next year

I think procreate and most other apps limit layers based on canvas size but afaik CSP uses some caching system to get around having to really limit layer count even on a piddly 4 gigs of RAM.

3rd gen is the first gen to switch to the 2nd gen pencil, usb c, and reduced bezel size.

Iirc even on a 3rd gen pro, you can have like 24(?) layers with the highest resolution canvas.

After doing some reading it sounds like it's canvas size and ram for procreate. I definitely want to use that over CSP personally, I generally go with a 3000x3000 canvas to start with so maybe it would be worth it to seek out a gen that has more ram to work with?

I've been doing some looking for used and refurbished ones online, I've been seeing more 4th and 5th gens in good condition. I don't mind spending a bit more for a higher gen but the increase in price when it comes to storage really seems obnoxious. Guess that's just how apple shit is.

I've never not seen csp go on sale this time of year. I need a 2nd license so hoping too.

How high does the res max out at specifically?

For reference my shitty S7 FE with 4 gigs of RAM can handle 45 layers at 3000x3000 in Infinite Painter

I was wrong, I didn't know until I went to try it now that you can extend the canvas beyond their biggest preset sizes. The max canvas size is 8559x7757, in which you can only have 4 layers.
The biggest selectable size is 5344x4136, which gives you 20 layers (also notes that the color is rgb instead of srgb?)
Screen size (2048x2733) is what I always use gives you 91 layers.

At 3000x3000, you can have 55 layers on a 3rd gen ipad pro

Would love to wait until we get to page 9 or 10 before making one, but a certain autistic individual makes that nearly impossible.

It depends:

On PC:
- Photoshop (even though not directly for drawing, it's the best for bitmap editing)
- Clip Studio Paint (specialized in illustration)
- Krita (similar to CSP, plus it's free, though a graphic tablet enhances its potential)
- Paint Tool Sai 1/2 (easy to use, lightweight compared to others, especially Sai 2 with more features to compensate for fewer tools initially)

On Mobile:
- Android (IbisPaint is the top, followed by Medibang, and then CSP if you have a license).
- iPhone (Procreate is the top, followed by Infinite Painter, HiPaint, and IbisPaint).

Despite the above, there are aspects that the top ones overlook, making other apps a recommended option (Sai 2's recovery is among the best compared to the top ones, creating brushes in Medibang is easy, Krita has addons at the level of premium tools, etc.).
