If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Here. Excuse the sloppy writing. For subtler poses and more normal, basic poses that aren’t very dynamic or foreshortened, I like to use an egg as the basis for constructing the ribs. This kind of explains how.

After putting a line to show the basic direction/angle of the tilt of the pelvis, I sometimes like to use an egg or cylinder as the first step to place the pelvis. Then I’ll give it corners and edges, making it kind of boxy, to better define its position/orientation. Kind of like what >>6929515
mentioned. Also, if the hips are doing something weird, I’ll sometimes draw “thong straps” to place the iliac crest and inguinal ligament. It’s not as sophisticated as drawing an underwear shape for the pelvis, but it’s a little better than a plain box (sometimes).

Her rib cage is at a subtle angle that’s kind of confusing because all rib cages have tilt built into them, and the neck is lower in front and higher in the back, like a neck hole for a t-shirt. (Also, the front plane of the rib cage is smaller than the back.) To make it easier to draw, you could exaggerate the pose a bit. For example, if you can’t tell whether she’s tilting towards us or away from us, just say “fuck it” and MAKE HER tilt one way or the other. The box is probably the most versatile, but not all constructions work for all models in all poses all the time.

You just flat out don’t know facial anatomy, which you need to efficiently draw portraits.First step is to learn basic shapes of the head. You attempt construction here but it’s very haphazardly done and you aren’t really feeling the form, just drawing your idea of the shape. Put more emphasis on the spherical shape and it’ll be much easier. Secondly study the skull, how it affects the face, and learning the muscles of the face. You got it Anon

These are a great start Practice realism but like the other anon said >>6930545 it would help to draw human skills and muscles over them. For now focus on accuracy on your studies and even if your initial sketch or construction is a bit wonky in terms of proportions try to render/ shade out planes of the face, those references have great shadows to add, like what you did on the first head but more

I drew several pictures that I'm more or less proud off, but they were always the animesque stuff with crappy bodies. Yes it does get easier, at least boxes and the general way 3D space behaves has become more automatic and less calculation based as time as has gone on. It'll become easier to just make one or two lines and then extrapolate intuitively where things are meant to go in relation to each other. It's normal for it to feel like your cognitive gears are grinding. Pace yourself, but keep pushing and it'll become instinctive like language.

Thank you, but this doesn't help, the drawing itself is still monochromatic. How can i bring dynamic color to this image, how can i show what the color of a shadow on skin looks like compared to the skin in high light? Because just putting black airbrush obviously looks like shit.

After gradient mapping, you can add an overlay layer to block further colors in.

Also, painting in color is (I have personally found) exponentially more difficult than pure grayscale, it would help if you learned how to control basic planes first in grayscale before attempting to do it in color.

I left the brushstrokes unblended in this case to show you what I mean about the planes (AKA painting sculpturally); if you look at any process video for portraits / still life / figure painting, etc, a lot of people will normally begin by trying to sculpt out the largest possible blocks of form first, before finely blending everything together / before getting into hardcore rendering.

These are only my personal findings with what little time I've spent painting.

6931346

>>6931300
If you do insist on painting in color immediately, it's essential that you can take any color that you see and convert it into the equivalent grayscale value - painting in color is no different from grayscale, but the hue and saturation affect the value in various ways.

Blue for example is inherently darker and yellow is inherently brighter, and because of that I will often check the actual values of my painting by switching the entire image over to grayscale, since the actual value of a given color can be quite deceiving.

With that having been said, the fact that you can check your painting (by switching it to grayscale) also makes painting in color become very similar to painting in grayscale, in that you are sculpting basic forms and planes which describe some three-dimensional surface - but one of the biggest learning curves with trying to paint in color is learning how to control the hue and saturation to end up with the correct value that you want, i.e. learning how to see colors as value.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I recommend starting with grayscale primitives like the sphere and cylinder to get used to the idea of each brushstroke contributing to the building up of a three-dimensional form, and after you feel comfortable enough doing that, you can apply the same principle to doing still life, which again goes back to the simplest possible three-dimensional forms that you can possibly render/paint, but with the addition of hue and saturation.

Every other imaginable form that you could possibly want to paint in color such as the deltoids or the abdominals or portraits, all of these rely on the ability to, in some sense, be able to treat the individual colors that you lay in as a strip of papier-mâché which slowly causes a three-dimensional surface / shape / volume to emerge (with each brushstroke being a single strip of papier-mâché, as it were)

tripod grip is your only reasonable option with a screenless. make sure you have one of the larger tablets [30cm minimum] else there's literally no point over traditional instead. 30cm is easily enough to draw with shoulder, just takes practice to get the control. swap between tablet and trad as you learn just to switch it up every now and then and help feel things out faster. lots of shoulder drawing tutorials for trad say it's fine to rest your hand on the pad as long as you don't put weight on it, but in my experience the grippier plastic of a tablet creates a lot of extra friction and fucks up any finer movements you make if you put the side of your hand down, so try to keep as much of it up as you can. i rest on my little finger's knuckle and nothing else, although that's on a screen tablet, can't speak for anyone else. gl!

Take them further. Read Vilppu’s drawing manual for some good ideas on gestural drawing. Gesture is really about getting down the idea (action) of the figure fast, so you can attach the structural (anatomy) elements as needed.
Prolong your time of each drawing. Do an initial light pass, then do a second pass of the drawing where you thoughtfully place thicker, stronger lines (i.e. outlines, overlaps, occlusions…) With enough process, gestures can become thumbnails for further ideas; the foundations you can then use to make a detailed piece.

Do you want to try copying it again with my edit? I used two curve layers with an inverted mask, one to bump up the lights, and one to darken the shadows, so as to bring out the planes of the head so that you can see them more clearly.

>Your first step in figure drawing is learning your basic shapes that make up a figure. A vest shape for the chest, underwear shape for the pelvis, and so on. And draw a proportion diagram.
So I just draw dozens of figures using pic related as a template? Or just draw the shapes themselves? The david fincher guide makes me think I dont even draw stick figures at all.

> which brushes do you generally use for lines?
I usually use ink type pens with a modest amount of texture but this time I just used a round hard brush since it seems most of other artists just use that. For the painting used a round brush as well and the smudge tool for softening some edges.

> Also is there a specific way you chose to have those red/blue terminators (shadow borders)?
Sorry,I cheated. I applied chromatic aberration on the key shadow layer(notice how is more notorious on the edges of the picture) then adjusted the values a little.

>do you go the imaginative route, or rely a lot on refs?
I use a lot of refences (pic related mostly in this casse) in general but I always try to draw on my own stuff. (no tracing or copy). This drawing fucked me over because this iconic pose its physically imposible to do as its portrayed in the source material without the arms clipping.

I'm not a pro at rendering or anything so take this with a grain of salt, but you can take certain areas of the human anatomy and generate more visual interest by blocking out larger planes / more distinctive shapes.

In this case, I used an upside-down-triangular-hourglass looking thing to show the serratus anterior which causes the form to "pop out" more at the viewer (especially visible when you zoom out / look at it from the thumbnail view)

It definitely deviates from the reference / deviates from being anatomically correct, but if you're ever interested in more stylized forms of rendering (or just want to play around with light / shadow shape design), this is a technique you can use.

I don't share a computer with anyone but I've noticed that even when I use invidious or private browsing to search something, I'll still suffer the anime or art advertisements on my phone.

I don't know if it's an issue with the videos or perhaps I may subconsciously scroll slower when I see an anime girl. I try going on non weeb-ish boards to throw off the algorithm but nothing works.

If it's that I scroll slower when fronted with anime girls, I could try compartmentalization or existence-wide larping to trick the algorithm to thinking I'm different people by tricking my own psyche. The thought of having induced multiple personality disorder just to draw cute anime girls seems like a lot of effort. I was hoping for maybe a book that's been translated or a mega full of video tutorials.

Just preference but stronger outline and brighter terminal line in your shading. Maybe some very light spray pen for some subsurface scattering on the skin.
