**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

beginner artist here, i'd like to draw anime and while ive drawn off and on as a hobby ive ultimately not made a lot of progress. I have a lot more free time now so I'd like to start from scratch. Are there any classes I could take to help me reach my goal. Uploaded pic is doodle I made recently. I dont hate it, but my consistency is trash, and I was only confident enough to draw a floating head... which took me hours to draw.

Finally finished up my 2nd Month of learning to draw

Things are going well I think, i'm trying to focus more on original creations rather than constantly copying or doing studies

There are some jumps because I didn't save every practice I did because they were just fundamental stuff, but there were like 3 or 4 days where I didn't draw out of frustration towards myself

Anyways, hope to see you guys for Month 3

It took me 4 day to finish level 1, I think I got most of the homework 70-80% right, so it's passable. I had fun, but I want to draw something else instead of doing Krenz's homework all the time.
I don't know whether my learning speed is too fast or slow, but im trying to build the habit and discipline here. Question is: What next? Let say i finish 10 level of Krenz accuracy, should i start with his perspective course? Or Flow?

Are their video courses that goes over how to copy while being mindful of what you're copying? I can copy art pretty easily by mimicking the same line stroke angles and length, and noticing the relationship and differences between different lines. However I'm not sure how this helps me in the long run other than being able to copy what i see, which isnt the end goal if i want to draw my own work from imagination.

TLDR; I'd like some really good video courses or guides that cover how to copy and explains how it can help me long term. sorry for wall of text.

I don't see a lot of people mention Korean art instruction books. Those guys are at a different level when it comes to explain why and how they do things, it’s the art equivalent of an Indian explaining math or computer science on YouTube.

This is just me but you got to draw your character's body both by reading sources but also observing the body propertions of real people and your favorite artist.
Important thing - remember that the guideline of seven heads is MERELY a suggestion and not a strict thing to follow. You can go beyond around eight or eight and a half heads specially when they have really long legs/fujo/CLAMP legs or go below, specially when you want to portray your 'grown up' character as a manlet/womanlet. Always take in mind not only the waist to hip ratio but also the torso and chest.
Lastly always remember fat, specially with female characters. Not that fat is needed but it does add some variety sometimes specially when its appropriate to add something soft for another character to sink their fingers on.

Honest answer. I did not use any 3d softwore or models to use as reference. I instead just have the character sheet of all characters I wanted to draw and use their own proportions as my reference to draw their faces/costumes/bodies. Its why I've advised earlier to be observant of body proportions and that different characters from different serieses have differing proportions.
I admit that I am tempted to experiment on those 3d softwares other artist use for their art, but I am kind of already used to just eyeballing things that I fear adding an extra layer of work would make things longer to draw.

i would say everything, but to not be so crabby the main problem is your lines, not just your lineart, you are adding too much and making nothing, it looks too messy specially when everthing has the same lineweight.
you lack line confidence amongs other things like anatomy, the head looks like a peanut. the ref is to point out how a messy linework can work with line confidence without hatchig one gorillian lines

What makes Asian art so much different than western art? Does fall down to the line weight, or use of it? Based on my own schizophrenic observations over the years, western art is "heavy" and Asian art (be it Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Mainlander or Hong Konger, Singaporean, you name it) is "lightweight". Even in art with thick, dramatic linework and bold colors there's a particular kind of feeling to their illustrations. What causes this phenomenon? It's not as if all westerners were taught by the same teachers, and same with Asian artists.

I know I take ages to choose any and I abuse blend modes because I'm trash, I've been struggling more with painting in a "pixiv way" than when I learned to actually draw. Figuring out what it is in specific that's throwing you off is good. Is it lack of understanding of basic shading? You might need to brush up on your fundies with that, how to render a stylized form. If it's colors then doing some color studies of popular arts or irl photos will help.

I'll add on to this anon's post with a story I remember reading in some old 2chan threads where someone relayed information about animators. It seems Sushio (formerly of Gainax) or someone else admitted he didn't practice drawing naked people all that often and a senior animator (Yoshinari, also formerly of Gainax) overheard started ripping into him, and quite mercilessly so; afterwards, the animator says he'll have to pull out his old copy of "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" by Loomis-san and get to practicing. This is understandable, figure drawing is an animator's bread and butter and they need to know how to draw many bodies from many angles consistently. But to think Loomis would be their go to...?

In Tatsuki Fujimoto's one-shot "Look Back", the main character begins to seriously study art in elementary school in order to be a mangaka. One of the first books she goes out and buys is Jack Hamm's "Drawing the Head and Figure".

Yusuke Murata infamously used an instructional drawing by Loomis line for line in one of his manga (albeit as an example).

>>6954237
No. Don't do the coloring and only rough shading when copying hair, or anything that is. The goal is to remember the basics, the essence of what makes a drawing good and never the details. Copy, and then think about why it bends the way it bends, or why that piece of hair is where it is and ho it relates to the volume of the head. If you do all of this while copying you will learn, if you just blindly copy without understanding what you draw you won't learn, or just very little.

not copying

learn how hair works then copy shit you like, if you copy right away with no fundies you are just gonna symbol draw. Copying is the worst thing to do as a beg even drawing mindlessly is more productive.

If you find the grid too autistic then make your own shorthand or mental note.

in conclusion i will say that anime hair stylization is about
1. dividing the hair into different geometrical parts flowing around the egg shape of the head. these parts are : bangs, sides, back, and top of the head. they are like different "landmarks" and should be treated as a separate shapes, but made to flow together
2. all of the different parts of the hair flow from one spot on the top of the head, so treat the volume of the hair accordingly, the volume comes out of this spot. especially emphasize the the volume of bangs as flowing from this spot. it's also where the ahoge comes from, if there is an ahoge
3. when the geometrical parts are constructed, start detailing the flow of the hair. the details follow the flow. there are very specific shapes for detailing the hair that give it the anime stylization look, it's like a language. all japanese artists use them. if you wan't a classic anime look use these shapes and do not deviate from them
