to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.

I was reading the big guide in the sticky, and its really good and detailed, but kinda overwhelming. Honestly, what I really want to draw is cute minimalist anime girl drawings, kinda like the artist Tsukumizu. Are these classical lessons like in the guide a necessary step, or is there a simpler guide specifically for my lesser goal? What I struggle with the most is 3D poses. Currently I just practice by looking at irl photos and making them into my own characters with the same pose. Is it enough to just do this over and over to improve? Or should i really go with classical fundamentals?

Right now I like to follow this guys guides: https://youtu.be/ZHJWjclAVnI?si=8mtJ8vyoW4BDT9py

Any advice? Currently reading perspective made easy. Im practicing drawing buildings and houses. I notice when drawing smaller things I’ll fuck up the proportions. Sup beg, yesterday i played with new app: PaintTool SAI. It is the fastest drawing app i have ever seen. It loads faster than MS paint, it works even on gigantic canvases with big complex brushes. And it still manages to have most of the functions drawers actually use, including perspective. My only gripe is very limited UI customization and some rough edges on few places. But for app made by single dude from japan its solid and very usable.

While the study is still really scuffed, I think I'm finally starting to slightly grasp his thought process with lines and lineweight in general, instead of me just copying all willy nilly. So I posted a few threads ago some of my traced work

I tried my hand at free drawing, basically I drew a skeleton sort of pose I liked based off a reference picture and drew off that

I'm not really sure what to do for pupils however and I've not seen many four armed poses I liked so I kind of just mixed crossed arms and hands on hips

How's it look? And does anyone have good references for anime style pupils?

Anyone here with any experience on vilppu figure drawing book, when does it stop being absolute shit?

I'm on page 90/173 and so far it has been a whole bunch of "draw the rest of the owl"

He's like "an cylinder is a ellipse with two lines :) HERE'S 8 PAGES OF EXAMPLES THAT BARELY HAVE A VISIBLE CYLINDER IN THEM"

Or how he spends 2 pages of actually talking about boxes and how they can be used to draw torsos, shows 8 pages of examples, just to never use it again in any of his other examples.

Is this the bottom of the barrel when it comes to figure drawing books?

Very nice sketches. Big fan of the hard shadow ones.

As for crit I’d say work on the breast overall. The breast is its own shape and you didn’t indicate that in your first drawing because you didn’t shade it. Notice in this pic how the girl’s breasts have close to shadow even in a sweater. In the second frankly I feel you didn’t try because it’s a sketch but even in a sketch the rounded shape of the breast and the muscle insertions should still be semi-close to anatomically correct, which it isn’t here. For the figure on the bottom right, I don’t think you did that great of a job depicting the left scapulae. I see it’s in perspective but it’s a bit disjointing seeing such a clear and detailed scapula in the back but only seeing its presence on the outside on the other side. You don’t have much room for the other scapulae because your spine and it’s perspective is messed up. I’d work on that as well

Also I think you should use much smoother lines when drawing women

you need to read a book on it, not just read articles and look at the pictures on some website. it looks like "too much" and complicated at first but it really isnt, its all natural.
read "mastering drawing the human figure from life, memory and imagination" by jack faragasso. its a great book. you will make remarkable progress reading it. as did i.
itll start with teaching you to draw the human figure and only towards the end teach you how to draw faces. but its necessary to learn figure drawing first.
for me the main goal is to draw faces but despite that im working my way through figure drawing first.

nta but I think this would qualify as gesture. I do agree that it's stiff, though.

You need to focus on the pinch and stretch of the torso, you're missing the feeling of her leaning back. The same thing with the neck. One side is stretched, but the other should be a sharp curve or pinch. It might be helpful for you to practice more with a mannequin, not timed gesture drawings, for a bit. And some very basic anatomy review will help, especially looking up things like landmarks

I don't see any disaster. I think you simply have that common self-hate some artists have (mentally unstable and or unwell). There are two solutions: start treating yourself (and your drawings) with respect and care you deserve.

Or just draw and don't focus on quality, instead aim for quantity.

I was like you once. I was never really a drawer growing up and only made art which I had to up through middle school. in high school I did none. for whatever reason I had the impetus to start drawing in college but I was extremely inconsistent because I would look at my drawings and be disgusted and frustrated and would end up quitting after a few days. I would always come back though because I found this deep desire to make beautiful art. after an extended quitting period - a few years - I came back and have since been much more consistent with my drawing and studies. I'm still /beg/ at this point, but I have made clear improvements from my initial sketchbook and am happy with the progress I am making. it is ultimately a leap of faith, but I believe that I can continue to make improvements and eventually create things I am proud to show others (should they wish to see them). if drawing/making art is only a passing interest of yours, I would say perhaps it would be better to leave it aside and pick up another hobby if you wish - there's nothing wrong with putting something down and moving on if there is no real point in doing otherwise (and the sunk-cost fallacy is not a valid point). but if that desire consistently makes its way back into the forefront of your mind, they you simply have to be aware of the likely disappointment you will feel when you see your lacking art. all you can do is study proper sources, be consistent, be aware, and bite the bullet. I have a sort of schizophrenic view, where you have to see the disappointed/negative/quitter side of yourself and tell it to fuck off - though perhaps being more hostile is not a good long-term strategy. at any rate, you have to learn to deal with these negative feelings and not treat them as the ultimate dictators of your life, if you ultimately want to continue your art journey. like I said I'm still a /beg/ myself, so take this as you will.

Getting the proportions and angles right seems really difficult. I don't like the idea of using some grid system because it doesn't seem like it would actually improve my eye for proportion too much

So... I need to create about 300 placeholders for my game with uniform proportions (scalable in the worst case) as fast as possible. You must learn to draw what you ACTUALLY see — and not the symbols your brain THINKS you see. The first fundamental is learning how to see. I recommend Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain because that’s what I’ve got experience with. pawell would recommend Keys to Drawing. You could alternatively do either Brent eviston or Proko’s beg course, and pick up some other fundies besides just observation. One anon here is kicking ass with Proko’s fundamentals course. Point is, before you can draw anything, you gotta draw what you see, and you can’t draw if you can’t see.

AFTER YOU CAN SEE:
I doubt anons hating on drawabox have much personal experience with it. DAB is autistically rigid and grindy, but that can be helpful to some. It’s a good “baby’s first construction” boot camp that takes you all the way from “how do I make a good line” to constructing plants, bugs, vehicles, and animals. You don’t need to go through the entire course, though. Just up until you’re really able to feel the form and have a grasp of the concepts underlying constructive drawing. Then, with that foundation, you can learn from anything. But you’ll have an edge in terms of being able to “feel the form.” For me, that took until lesson 4.

If you’re gonna do DAB, you can probably skip the stuff on texture and dissections if you’re a brand new baby beg, all cute and full of potential, with no experience yet. That stuff is very advanced and kind of out of place in the course. You can watch the instructions and if you find it to be an impossible mindfuck, just skip it.

You could also/alternatively do moatdd/mark’s drawing tutorials exercises instead, to learn construction. It would get you to a similar place in terms of raw 3d drawing ability, but it would be completely self-directed. Sort of the opposite of DAB’s rigid approach to teaching.

Either option will brute force your ability to do constructive drawing. Do whichever you prefer.

Most stuff I see online is a couple of minutes of an explanation of a concept and that's it, which isn't helpful. It doesn't tell you how or why, just what, and it doesn't tell you the most important part - how to actually learn and master the concept.

>making you draw crumpled pamper and upside down which I'm pretty sure is not only not helpful, but actually counterproductive for the absolute beginner.
No, that’s to try to teach you how to replicate what your eyes see without having your brain be able to turn it into a symbol. If you see a drawing of a guy in a chair, you’re gonna try to draw the symbols your brain uses as shorthand for “a guy in a chair.” If you turn it upside down, you just see a bunch of lines and the relationships between them, without anything to easily latch onto as a symbol/simplification. Copying that, just the lines and their angles and relationships, will help to break you from symbol drawing. It’s trying to train you to draw what you see rather than what you think you see.

>You want to learn to simplify complex shit into easy 2D planes and 3D object, not focus on lines.
That comes after you can draw what you see. You have to be able to see and analyze and understand what’s actually there before you can simplify it. Then you can go “hm, the simplification of this shadow shape begins about here, and it’s at this angle.” Or “the degree of the ellipse formed by this wheel is like that, so I’ll just put this cylinder here to match it.” Or “the tilt of this pelvis is like this, so I’ll tilt my box here like that.” But you’ve gotta be able to see first.

"You will not get better at art by just watching videos!"

It doesn't matter really what course you're starting with anon. The point is that you need to start learning the basics of drawing. Art is both theory and practice, just as any skill is, and you're knowledge will not grow unless you start moving your pencil. The beginning is the hardest part. What you're learning now seems unclear, but if you keep pushing through you will make breakthroughs at certain points. Guaranteed.

"You are now entering “The Fog.” You will have read this chapter and think you understand it—and perhaps you do—but it will seem foggy. That’s okay. If living in the fog becomes discouraging, look back two chapters and you should understand that chapter clearly. In two more chapters this chapter will be clear, assuming you keep studying."

So I drew this with reference/partially from imagination...however I dunno how my version of her looks so mean and off compared to the original, yet my brain can't really tell what the issue is?

So there are multiple issues with your drawing Anon.

Firstly there’s pretty much no perspective or shape in your drawing. You attempt it by drawing construction circles but you don’t move along the form of the ball causing it to look flat, same with the hair. For the shoulder area I’d try to imagine it as a box and build the body around it, or simplify it into simple shapes (I.e a cylinder for the arm, which can work here). Since this was an imagination attempt, it would be more successful if you found the simple shapes in her body (sphere for the head and the hair, etc) and built upon that.

Secondly you need to learn the skull and how it affects the structure of the head overall, as her head is just stylized. You also need to learn facial proportions

Lastly work on line confidence. Work on making smooth lines, drawing smooth and clear shapes, and drawing lines at different weights.

>Lastly work on line confidence. Work on making smooth lines, drawing smooth and clear shapes, and drawing lines at different weights.

That part i am working on, I am leagues better than I was a few weeks back but I agree could do with some work.

What parts could I have put shape in my drawing? I thought I did the head okay (considering this is actually the second head I've done like this) but how could I have exactly put more shape into it? Your sketch only shows her blobby pony tail with the contour lines but not the face/head.

I'm gonna screencap your post for later, I'm gonna draw her again tomorrow to see if I can improve her.

It did feel good drawing her though,

To add on to my previous response what makes yours so less appealing is the inherent lack of femininity in the drawing (large forehead, thick neck, roughly drawn features, etc). Draw women with thinner necks, smoother and curvier lines, and emphasis on the feminine features such as the brows, lip shape, etc

I merely just lacked the experience to pull it off. Again appreciate this brutally honest critique, I'll redo her and see if I can make her look good.

>> No.6919406

>>6919391
There are some contour lines in the face/head of my drawing, they’re just a bit hard to see. I drew an ellipse on the side of her head and draw around the front of her head to label the eyes(you can see it a bit between them). Though I probably didn’t emphasize it enough as is, the head can absolutely be used as a shape here. As for additional shapes I think you could’ve put a box for the perspective of the shoulder/torso area. For a ref like this since you can’t see the full body I think finding a box in that area is best

>>6919406
Gotcha, will try that out also.

I am screencapping and adding your critiques to a screenshot as I said I would. Again thank you for this.

I will say btw that I struggled to even do a head ,like the one I drew (as bad as it was), months ago, which I guess shows even when you think you get something, you still have a long way to go before you can make truly appealing stuff.

literally just start. pick what you want to focus on (gesture, construction, with or without a reference, etc) and do it a lot. if you need a strict(er) format, set an hour for drawing. if that's too easy and you want to push yourself do more. or, if you wish, set your own number of drawings you want to hit and adjust day by day.

there are resources such as tutors, web tutorials, and books that can be of more or less help along that goal - but obviously some of that costs money. otherwise you just have to take what you can get and live with the fact that your conditions may never be 100% ideal - such is life. you may simply have to be your own teacher, imposing a study regiment on yourself. ultimately I would think that the best thing to do, as you can gauge how much/little you can reasonably do in whatever amount of time while still pushing yourself to improve. perhaps run an experiment for a week and track your progress. obviously some threads here can be of some benefit in critique, but you have to take it with a grain (or heap) of salt. perhaps you're focusing too much on the bigger picture. you can only progress from where you are, so pick one thing (say gesture) and study that for a week. there are resources here and elsewhere that break up the fundamentals. pick something and just do it. move on to the next. you will never perfect any of them in a short amount of time, but if you stay consistent and are very intentional about your drawing you will make improvements.
