If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

I drew this today, I've decided to have a break from doing studies to try drawing fan art/own stuff for a while and seeing what sticks...

Though I seem to have this issue where as I feel very depressed/hopeless whenever I draw something, like I dunno why I get that but it seems to stem from knowing that A. I may never actually get good at drawing or B. I have an insanely long way from actually drawing well.

Granted it is way easier for me to draw now, a month ago drawing something like this would have been impossible, so even though it looks terrible (and unfinished cuz I drew it in like 20 minutes) it's still leagues better than my ability in September.

How do you get over the feelings of depression from being bad at drawing at 27?

And again only been drawing actively for a month.

If you have hard time with proportions, you may want to start with mapping the whole body lightly (so that it doesn't get in the way later) first. Anon, if it makes you feel better some people start later. Try not being able to draw at 29.
Left is when starting out, right is some months later (hope it doesn't make you more depressed, lol).
Try not comparing yourself with already good artists, and pay more attention to your own growth. Figure out what you need to work on and do it at your own pace, not to burn out. Though it's good to draw something every day, even if for half an hour, just to not get rusty. Combining fundies with drawing for fun is a good approach to keep it steady, former you need to feel progress and latter will help you out with figuring what to train next.

I didn't start books until later, mostly educational videos on yt. The books you mentioned work as good as any others, but it's important to watch how other people draw and what advice they might have, cause it will push you into the right direction.
Also, if you want to feel better about yourself, try working on one pic longer. I would spend some hours on a single one until it looks decent enough for me (or until I can't make it better without making it worse). It helps with your confidence and show your weak points. Use references obviously.

Hey guys, I posted here around a week ago about an unpaid internship I was undergoing at a design company. My final day was on Friday and I like to think I left on good terms with everyone. Come the following days I'm told it was a 'surprise' I left so soon (I'd been there 2 weeks and made it very clear I was only going to be there 2 weeks) and that the person who got me the gig might get in trouble with their boss for having to justify getting equipment + software. I feel kind of bad (just a little since they 'did' help me) but the kicker is that they aren't willing to give me a reference for working there as they "haven't seen the full extent of my work yet.". This just sounds like corpo save-my-ass speak to get me doing more free work for them but I dunno. What do you guys think?
I'd post this on the careers thread but I'm pretty sure it's dead.

Day 15 of learning the basics n whatnot. Did the usual ref sketches and doodling, but I also did a new assignment from Proko's basics course. Was supposed to do a study on a masters line work. I picked Horikoshi. It was hard as heck and it took me way longer than I imagine, I hope that's normal. I think I kinda understand a little bit of his line decisions, so I tried applying it to a head doodle. Didn't do any value stuff, but overall a pretty good day. Also, snakes are still hard and beetles are really fun.

Yeah your lines are looking a lot better already. They curve to show the form better and the different thickness are helping to show whats in shadow and the T shape shows the overlapping of the upper ear.

Lines are an abstraction of reality. We don't actually see lines in nature so having them taper a lot or a little is up to your artistic expression. Analyze and study from your favorite artists to see how they use different types of lines to get different results and apply what you like to your own stuff. In general we use thicker lines for shadows, overlaps, to accentuate curves and to make more important things stand out. Thinner lines to show the light and for less important details. Lines going from thick to thin are useful for showing the form of an object.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE7bWfPeYSI

With shading, just like lines, the shapes are abstractions so you can design them to get different results. In general simpler shapes are easier to read and are also easier to draw. Clear separation between the light and shadow is probably the most important thing to keep in mind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZknWKTpc90
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcCJ2CU-bFw

The color you chose for the shadow is a bit too close to the light in terms of brightness. Making it darker will make it more effective. Also you almost never want to just darken a color. The hue and saturation are also effected. A good rule of thumb is to just make the shadow colors more saturated. You can also shift the hue closer towards red for warm colors and closer to blue for cooler colors. Most of the time the light will be warmer and the shadows will be cooler. It's quite subtle so don't go crazy with it.

Color is pretty forgiving as long as the values are right. Depending on the art style and feeling you are going for the saturation can be all over the place. Just study art you like and see how they do it and what feeling that gives. Every rule about color can be broken, so treat stuff you read about it more like guidelines or opinions rather than rules.

Feeling the form is basically understanding construction and learning to think and draw in 3D. See pic related.
Here’s what I did to brute force it:
>Draw A Box until lesson 4
That’s enough to get you started. To apply construction and feeling the form to the human figure specifically:
>Vilppu drawing manual
>Vilppu renaissance figure drawing course
More advanced figure construction:
>Morpho
>Michael Hampton
>Bridgman
To keep your 3d drawing powers up and develop them further:
>grinding organic forms and primitive forms from imagination
>rotating boxes and cylinders
>constructing hyper angle poses

Really all it is is drawing boxes and tubes as placeholders and simplifications for the figure. Drawing a torso is hard. Instead, it’s a lot easier to draw an egg (rib cage) and a box (pelvis) connected by a squishy tube(abdomen).

All of your characters have weight, they're interacting with their environments to some degree and not just floating in a void like most character/concept sketches. That's already miles ahead of artists that have achieved a higher degree of technical proficiency.

The hips (and associated joints/musculature) is your weakest area in terms of form. Like the sitting guy's look wooden and the astronaut's look too fluid.

That's not a fantasy dick. It's a drawing of the penis of a fossa from Madagascar

Their penises are so long when fully erect they nearly reach between their forelegs. Their knots are cause female fossas are sluts and sleep with any male so they need something to lock in place.

the past week it has become a habit to draw, now i draw for hours at a time and time passes more quickly than i realise. also i feel like i have to spend as much time as possible every day drawing and playing video games or whatever makes me feel guilty.
but i dont know, yesterday and today i have a headache and i cant draw as much and i feel sick looking at it after a while. but that should pass when the headache is gone.

Lol, stuff like Marc Brunet, mikeymegamega, Proko and so on. Neither of them are optimal for a complete beginner, cause they are better for general advice if you already know how to draw semi-confidently. Still useful for inspiring you to push above your weight. Just don't get upset, you can't do the simplest thing they do as good as they can.
If you search for specific exercises for beginners, you can find something from them or other yt teachers. But books work too if you want more in-depth material.
