Redlining the way /ic/ does it is virtually useless. You should do your own in-depth anatomy trace-overs with lots of cross referencing with relevant references. /ic/-style redlining CAN be an effective exercise, but in order to work, the recipient needs to use photo reference which he then includes for the redliner, who can then point out what the recipient is doing wrong. Extensively redlining imaginative work, on the other hand, is some chimp shit. And redlining a fundamentally broken beg drawing is an exercise in futility.

Oh, no, the redline is drawn better and the original artist could certainly learn some things from it. But in terms of the stylization of the figure, a demure anime girl with a plump butt, the original pulls it off better. The redline looks more like an athletic girl.

Well this is awkward, I'm the redliner in this situation and I'm getting rekt by anons lol but it's an honor to be used as the thread starter example haha One thing I will say is I kinda draw everything a bit quickly for replies so my example on the side might not be the best so I cans see why people would like the original better, I also moved the head farther to the left to make room for the neck which I guess isn't a redline but a full edit

Hope you don't mind, I jumped in to offer some help.

This is a bit of a difficult perspective, you did pretty well with the hands. I struggled even with reference to get something I was happy with lol. I tried to include some diagrams of basic shapes you can start to think of when drawing. Attempt to construct the hands with these shapes in mind and it'll be a lot easier to capture the angles you're looking for.

For the sleeve, I wasn't entirely sure if you are trying to go for a baggy sleeve look, or like a monk's robe because you've got two types of sleeves going on in your picture. Since you have rolled up cuffs, I went for baggy sleeves. When you have things that are baggy, they tend to bunch up in places where there are "pinches" such as at the elbow or where they are getting tucked in, like at the belt and calves. Fabric has weight to it and depending on the type of fabric, they either have lots of folds or few. Thick fabric tends to have very few, heavy holds. Thin fabric has a lot more. Reference is the only way you will be able to learn how to draw the difference, so look up pictures and draw them to get a sense of how these different types of clothing work.

Less is more when drawing folds and fabrics, too much and it'll start to look like a jumbled mess of fabric and become too busy. If you want the focus of your drawing to be the fabric, go wild, but too much can be distracting (I learned this from Vilppu).

Hope this is of some help to you.

I really like this one. Just in terms of color and value, I'd group the shadow side more and create a bit more contrast. I also played around with a cool main light and warm rim light. I went overboard with it, but it would probably look good if you made it more subtle.

The gluteal fold does not appear on the outside contour of the body the fat and even muscles even out quite a fair bit by that point. Although their may be a slight indication on some models of a separation between the butt and thigh, it is subtle. For your highlights and shadows, do not recklessly put down just any series of lines. Be thoughtful of where you're placing them. A highlight is practically never in the same spot as the terminator.

Do you have an artist you're attempting to emulate? If you gave an example of what you're trying to shoot for then I can try and be a bit more specific on how to achieve that result.

The redline in the OP doesn't have a solid grasp of perspective, which is severely undermining their effectiveness.
>face is just flat, absolutely no way to tell we're looking up at the figure
>contour lines on the leg are wrong too, again, no way to tell we're looking down at her legs
At least the original had strong shape language, to me it looks like the redliner just wanted to correct something for the sake of correcting, and accidentally showed their own weaknesses as a result.
If they wanted to show what was wrong with something, I'd have just drawn that one thing. They screwed up in revealing their borderline beginner skill level.

It's correct. It shouldn't be the same length as her torso, she's leaning back, it should be relatively the same length as the shin, which is coming toward the viewer some, at the least since it is vertical it will be mostly unaffected by the perspective only smaller due to depth. Mine's a little pointy because of the mouse but it is at least that long.

ooh, did I redline you earlier? I think, my advice remains the same, continue making your master copies and observing more. >>6918474
Sure, there's form, and then there's the shape of a form. Form is the most fundamental part of drawing, but it still has a length, width, depth, and a combination of straight lines, C-curve lines, and S-curve lines. Once you can lay down something solid and with mass, now your job is to shape your form into something more sophisticated and true to life.

I think this is best learned by master copies. Be as accurate as possible with your master copies, btw, spend 20 minutes on a single one if you have to. Shape is very closely related to proportion, in fact, they're probably the same.

Shape is also the same as your visual library, because if you think about it, artists can only draw spheres, cylinders, and boxes (primary forms). The only way they can draw different things is if they shape those forms into something else, like moulding clay. The bigger your visual library, the more forms you can draw, the better of an artist you'll be.

tl;dr don't overthink it, and just copy more artists. Do hours of copies every day.

I sketched out pic related for a reason, but then I forgot it. I'll post it anyways lol

Master copies and life drawing will improve both your sense of form and shape, so there's not really a reason to do beans and boxes. I know I told people to do them in past redline threads, but that was bad advice. I had like 5 paragraphs of anecdotal evidence typed out to support my reasoning, but there's no need for you to read through all of those.

I would not even recommend doing beans and boxes as a warm up or a supplementary exercise. I think they're a total time and energy suck now. Actually, you can do boxes, because perspective is important, but if you're going to practice perspective, you should quickly graduate from boxes to more complex stuff like mecha and sci-fi weaponry

I really like this one and followed your progress in the other thread. My crits are mostly personal preference and very small.

Some of the perspective could be tightened up. The roof doesn't quite line up with the ground and it feels like we're supposed to be looking up at him. I like that he's lanky and tall and kind of feels like the tall man from It Follows. Good stuff.

I think less is more with him and the strong overhead lighting and perspective could help with that. Would be cool to see one leg in the shadow too. I really liked your warm colors, and added more of them to balance colors a bit more.

I liked your boots, but decided to give him more traditional, thick nasty boots.

Hope I didn't butcher it too bad and it gives you an idea of how I'd do it.

I felt I should jump in here. The reason it's so stiff is because you've got him standing straight up like a totem pole. Our spines have a natural curvature to them and when we relax we tend to tilt our upper abdomen in a slanted angle. I gave you some side-by-sides so you can see what I mean more clearly and broke it down into how you should think about it when constructing it.

Always be mindful of your "line of action" which is the general motion of which the body is doing. It can be represented mostly by "C, S, I" type curves. This is what would be considered an S curve.

Most importantly, if you don't understand something, always use reference!

You are struggling because your perspective makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, to put it bluntly. If you plan to tackle a complex scene like this, I highly suggest you learn the fundamentals of proper perspective first, otherwise you will just continue to struggle to position characters in a 3d space.

With that being said, here is a quick re-draw for you.

You're on the right path. You have the right idea, but you need to focus more on your proportions and keep your structure more focused. I think you're focusing too much on anatomy and not thinking about simple shapes enough when plotting your construction. I suggest looking at michael hampton or will weston to see how they break things down into simple shapes and build up from there.

My whack at it.
The big issue with the legs is that they're pointing in the wrong direction relative to the torso. The torso is 3/4, but the pelvis and legs are almost a side profile. Try to imagine the torso and pelvis as two boxes in front of each other in perspective.

The perspective in general is off for everything touching the ground (i.e the arm, pelvis, and feet.) It's all too flat. Putting down a perspective grid will help with this.

Other major points:
*The breasts are too high up. The main mass of the breasts should be located just below the armpit.
*I tilted the head and neck forward to improve the pose. It's a bit unnatural to have the head just straight out in this position, since the pull of gravity would make it pretty uncomfortable. Having her head learn towards the front more also improves the composition her.

also, sorry, I mistook the squiggle next to the hand as cum

Big issue I see is just that the BG is much farther away from the character than I'm assuming it's supposed to be. If the camera is this close to the character, than she'd have to be pretty far away from the kitchen counter (?) for us to see as much of it as we do. So either zoom in more on the background, or shrink down the character to fit the space.

Of course, maybe she actually is supposed to be that far away and the BG placement makes more sense in context. Just make sure you're being intentional with the perspective and how big the character is relative to the background.

Other than that, it's too sketchy and unfinished to really make any other criticisms about it.

It does look wonky, but it's difficult to tell if that's because the perspective is wrong, or if you just haven't polished it up enough. The only advise I could really give is to draw with a horizon line and VPs plotted down, and to use straight lines. Just doing that will make it look 100% better, while also making any problems with it more obvious.

To clarify, I wasn't calling the perspective wrong or incorrect, per se. I'm just saying the character is far away from the BG, and it's unclear if that's intentional or not.

You've got a good start to a piece here. The anatomy is decent overall, so keep up the good work there.

The big issue I want to point out is the wonky perspective on the figure.

Keep in mind that when the figure is posed in a 3/4 view like this, the body is going to follow a VP in the distance. Parts of the body close to the horizon line will be flatter, while parts of the body farther away from the HL will slant at an angle.

The perspective wonk is most obvious with the feet. The feet are flat and the same distance from the viewer, but if they were planted in perspective, one foot would be closer to the viewer than the other.

I recommend to get in the habit of setting up some VPs, and making sure each major landmark of the body follows a VP. (E.g. the ankles, knees, breasts, collarbone, etc.)

Also, notice that in your drawing the arms are flat-up against the figure, but in reality they'd be going towards the viewer away from the body. Since they're up next to the breasts, there's no room for them to be flat against the body. (if that makes sense. See the top-down view I sketched.)

As a sidenote, be careful about posing the arms and hands in front of large breasts. Doing so can easily muddy the pose and make it less readable, since you're putting two complex objects (hands) in front of another set of objects (boobs). I kept the pose as-is in my redline, but I'd consider changing it. Maybe lower the hands so it's below her breasts, or rotate the figure.

oh okay, looking at the reference I can better see what you were going for.

In the reference image, the horizon line seems to be near the girl's ankles, making it an upshot. So I redlined the specific areas of your piece that don't match that perspective. (*the boob redline is a bit nitpicky, they were only slightly off.)

so you were right actually to make the feet nearly flat, though they were still just a little too flat. It's pretty subtle, but if you look closely at the reference, you'll see the models feet are still at a slight angle. It's only in orthographic views where you'll see the feet be completely flat and parallel to the horizon line.

Looks good to me kinda messed around.
Most glaring thing to me was the tail is too complex.

That's the thing, there's no red line, just black lines, I mean...

He gace you two redlines, one for the pose you posted and one for how he'd make it more dynamic.
It's good advice.

Can someone with skill help me out here? This was a rough sketch and I know I could improve it. Just want to see a better hand take a stab at this pose. No reference, just imagination.

newfag here, is it just for house keeping that we make new threads? is there a thread length limit? What's to stop us from just using this thread?

>> No.6946265

>>6946172
Once a thread hits 300 replies on this board it stops being bumped in the catalog and starts falling, when it falls to page 10 it's archived. So a new thread is made sometime after 300 replies, the board is slow so usually we wait until it's at page 5 or below to make the new thread.
