Is he a realistic role model for budding artists?

>> No.6905988

>>6905914
Creatively & stylistically, sure. But career-wise he was one of the last great cartoonists of a dying business model. Even during his career Watterson complained of the shrinking size of newspaper strips.
Comics have a future, but it's mostly indie, patreon, and I hate to say it, webtoons (can't stand the format or most of the comics, but can't deny the success—along with manga, they prove comics are still viable commercially).

>webtoons
Manga thrives on physical sales, but Webtoons doesn't have that. Ad revenue pays too little, and the printed tankobon of webtoons look like CRAP.

I'm not a Luddite, but I don't think physical manga is going anywhere, in the same way physical books and physical prostitutes aren't either.

I meant that since newspapers disappeared editorial cartoonists did too for the most part. whos to say physical books won’t disappear either in the grim future, thereby cementing awful vertical scroll webcomics as the de facto comic medium

Who cares. I hate the idea that you have to disappear after your magnum opus just because it adds to some "mystique" about your character. Let creators create, if you don't like it, don't engage with it.

I know this post is bait, but let's talk seriously on that for a bit. How good is Watterson when it comes to his "actual" art? For instance, you obviously don't draw Tyrannosauruses on F-14s as good as he does as a beg.

I say he should be a role model for everyone - Did what he wanted, and is an example of an artist who truly refused to ever 'sell out' by commercializing his art. A very respectable dude.

>>6905988
>newspaper strips.
That's more so because newspapers and printed media are failing. I think strips, such as daily strips for websites, or for children's magazines, or magazines in general. Though try and find an editor with enough insight to realise there was a reason newspaper strips were popular and trying to make use of them in their product is another matter.

>thereby cementing awful vertical scroll webcomics as the de facto comic medium
Vertical scroll is its own beast. Even assuming print dies completely, people will still make and read the typical print-format comics/manga, though perhaps with adaptations in things like text size and page dimensions, to suit a screen a little better. But that does not mean switching entirely to the infinite scroll format, as that is its own distinct artform that a lot of people do not enjoy in the same way they enjoy a typical comic layout. The fact that people have been reading manga on their PCs and phones before the infinite scroll webtoon came around and continue to do so is evidence of this. Classic format comics are not ill-suited for digital media at all, though they could be optimized for it a little better.

I think Watterson monologue types are a dime a dozen these days, so it'll be hard for him to really establish himself. He'd have to lean into the vivid imagination strips harder and show off his technical skills more to differentiate.

>but idn if i should take inspiration from this dude.
If he inspires you he inspires you. Watterson himself was inspired by comics 50+ years before his time, yet was successful.
>Would Watterson suceeded in current times?
Probably, but what he would create would likely be different. Watterson often criticized the size and format restrictions in newspapers of his time, and praised the full-page format of the early 20th century, which allowed for more detailed illustration and experimental design.
The internet has no size or format restrictions, so he would be able to experiment like he wanted (even if it was C&H, it would have been a far more expansive C&H). His work is far better than many successful webcomics, so content-wise I have no doubt he could have had a successful patreon/kickstarter.

Every artist should start out with Watterson as a role model in terms of artistic integrity. The peak of your artistic merit and success will be determined by what you achieved before you gave up and sold out; if you were pre-sold out all along, you won't get anywhere.
