The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and RELATED COMIC work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6908831

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

No, and I mean this unironically. Not everything should be white, not everything should be a forced mixture of "diversity", some things can just be black, or middle-eastern, or some other ethnicity. If such peoples want representation in media then they can start by writing some themselves, so by all means, do it.

To be honest right now I just use it for the characters since that’s usually where I waste more time. I’ve imported a couple obj files I found on turbosquid.com (cars) and it’s kind of interesting but it really depends on how the model was made (if it has too many polygons clip starts chugging along). For that kind of stuff or backgrounds it might be easier to simply use external 3D software (like blender)

I sketch them same as I do characters, and I tend to ink them the same as I do my characters, freehand. Gives them more character at the expense of accuracy, which is a good trade IMO. Of course, achieving both would be ideal.
That said I'll likely be dialing back this approach for more sterile background linework, since my editor seems to feel that more sterile and inorganic feeling backgrounds serve to make the characters pop more by comparison, which is a pretty fair point IMO.

>>6911594
Lol every time I start a project I think to myself "this time I'll give posing 3d models a try, just see how I like it" but I can never find a smooth place to fit it into the workflow. Drawing the storyboard is too soon, because I don't want to care about accuracy there, but I sketch quickly when I have a good storyboard to work with, so I'd have to intentionally slow down my sketching phase to do the 3d posing. So as a result, maybe out of laziness, I never end up bothering to incorporate 3d into my workflow.

If you're pornanon, I'm going to disagree with your editor on this. Maybe it's just the Japanese taste to have cold sterile sex anyway, judging by the rest of their porn, but a well thought out and drawn setting really enhances the atmosphere and mood of an erotic situation.

He's only talking about the line work itself. The setting can have plenty of character with "boring" lines. Look at Seto Yuuki's (older) works for example. That said I personally agree with you, I prefer to have fun with the line work in the backgrounds, but I also trust that he knows what he's talking about. Dude's been in the game longer than me, and he's seen far more artists succeed and fail than I ever will, so I'm inclined to take him on his word for such matters.

I dunno man, I don't think I've ever found porn more hot because of the style of line work in the backgrounds. It can make for cooler drawings, and it can breathe life into a setting, sure, but I can't say I've found a work more erotic as a result of the line work of the backgrounds. Plus I feel like it can be difficult to give a setting character without distracting from the actual porn. Even those Seto Yuuki works feel a little too "developed" as a setting to me, it's a little bit distracting. Outside of porn it would be great, but for comics where the goal is to be wanking material, you gotta stay focused on that goal.
Anyway, I think it may be better to keep the line work sterile for the environment, at least during sex scenes, so the character art can be more erotic by comparison. But again, I still personally prefer to draw the backgrounds with more character.

And man looking at these Seto Yuuki works makes me want to draw something along these lines.

I can still draw and make art like I used to and I think the comic will still look similar to how it usually does when I go back to making black and white pages with more experimental paneling. I'm working on a Samhain special in black and white rn that's a different style from the beach episode.

But if you want to continue with that, then please, you are free to work on your general with whatever work you claim to be manga. I won't bother you, and I suggest other people here stop going there to create unnecessary drama.

In this general every work in which the medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information in the for of sequence of panels of images is welcome. Even if the name change to /comic/ anyone who wanted to draw right to left and in japanese like the hentai anon would be welcome too, nothing would change.

This board is slow, and few people post here, so instead of posting your work and asking for advice and contributing to the enrichment of this thread, you resolved to do all this. I contacted Webtoon support and they already got back to me and told me which panels to change. It wasn't the comic itself, it was the chapter cover and the "implied nudity" on it. I changed it to a different image so hopefully they put it back up after review.

I miss when more manga used traditional media, too. Pic related is the first "how to draw" book I ever bought when I was young because I wanted to replicate those techniques.

you dredged up some missing memories with that image. I totally forgot airbrush pens existed for a second.
Goache and watercolor are also acceptable tools for coloring pages but you need Kent paper, or an equivelant sized bristol board since those are made to handle wet mediums better than ink, or alcohol markers.

I had one of those books when I was a teen, but i've also got a copy of "draw your own manga, all the basics" lying around which does have some valuable stuff in it about handling the medium itself, tools, techniques, etc. All of them are old and the art is horribly dated, but the info holds up just fine. I also had a copy of "how to draw manga" by Benn Dunn and that was uhh... something.

There's something that always bugged me about typical how to draw manga books and that was they were mostly about learning to draw (anything) that kind of felt like it should never be the point. Meanwhile there was little to no info around (until, maybe five or six years ago) about the technical side of it as an artform. You had to dig deep.

Just don't use 3d in your own art...
Also the sooner you lose these /a or reddit habits of shallow pov on the media you consume the better at your craft you'll become.
This is where you chose if you're gonna stay an edgelord crab or a craftsperson, don't be distracted by non-sense. Your esthetic opinions are just your own random preferences, the quicker you realize they're not a dogma or that you need somebody else to validate, them the quicker you'll gain focus on how to act on those artistic preferences and achieve them.
Good luck in everything, cheers

Probably because, while it ends up that the figures look technically and anatomically correct, the exaggeration and "animation" of the pose/gesture ends up kind of lost. Its kind of the same as if someone has extremely amazing technical skills, but almost no style or doesn't really push the poses/figures at all, it just becomes boring to look at.

Manga is really all about pushing the visuals to make things exciting and lively, and being able to draw things with mastery in anatomy and technical skill doesn't mean that your work won't also be kind of boring.

I think it is sort of ironic that when I say "I think 3d looks bad" or "photocopied elements look bad" someone comes at my throat saying "this is your opinion". It is, that's very true. I already know people will always rabidly disagree with me, so I don't need validation. I use 3D to help me complete my work, so this isn't a condemnation of 3D or photobashing.

I didn't like the 3D and photocopied elements in Inuyashiki. It comes off as lazy and it clashes with the characters. Photobashing also has a habit of creating messy and unclear compositions if not handled carefully. There are plenty of artists who use these tactics to great effect- Takahashi Tsutomu for instance, doesn't even confine himself to a couple of tools. If this is what you want to do, then you should focus on how to integrate them in a tasteful way. Composition is a key element for sequential art and it shouldn't go so neglected if you want something that looks good.

"like", "comes off as", "tasteful", "looks good" ...even your language is subjective, the problem isn't about your tastes, the problem is trying to pass your subjective suppositions as objective certainties. You ARE protecting your preferences and looking for validation.

The screen you posted looks reasonably decent, looked up the page and the panel does exactly what it's supposed to do. not even that big of an OKU fanboy but visually inuyashiki is really interesting and different, and overall a really competent manga, saying otherwise would be me stating that I can match or surpass a professional veteran's output, which I know I can't right now (obviously).

That's why being someone that's that opinionated when you can directly see and compare your own work to other pros always sounds very self-unaware and fanboy shittery, and it's something a lot of the people here do, thinking they're on /co or /a.

You're supposed to have the perspective of a craftsman not that of an edgy fanboy.

Hey anons, I like Anime (particularly from the 90s and 00s) and I like American Comics, I just love the full color printing, the type of paper the Magazine like trim etc... I think I should make comics like Udon's Street Fighter and Darkstalkers comics where the interior art looks like the OVAs from the 90's. There are comic publishers like Antarctic Press and Oni that I think I could send samples too but one thing kind of worries me and it's gotta do with the characters ages. Not like I'm drawing porn or anything but you guys think American publishers would be okay with ecchi type stuff when the characters are barely teenagers? I mean, I think the average anime girl protag is between 14 and 16 year old, and you get those things translated to English and sold this side of the Pacific but I think there's this tolerance to that material because it comes from another country and that they'd probably have some issues if directly producing this type of material... You can probably get away with it as long as you can avoid mentioning the age. But with ecchi content, you probably may have to pass on AP. Oni Press doesn’t seem to be taking submissions atm. Twitter does have its use in finding some of these publishers, but here’s one that publishes “The Rising of the Shield Hero” for the West and some other manga, but they also do publish original graphic novels. AP as far as I know creators retain full rights to their IP. AP just publishes, advertises, and distributes them. this guy has pretty decent videos on youtube to get you started, a lot of good basics https://www.youtube.com/@colorwithkurt

in short you need to make your colors closer as if they're part of the same color space , if you don't, it may end up looking a bit garrish and accented (maybe you want that who knows). then the shading/rendering style is up to you.

It's not so bad. I draw booba once in a while, i'm okay with it, and it gives me a little boost. I wish people would pay more attention to the things I cared about, but if I didn't love it more than the attention of strangers it would have destroyed me by now.

can I ask what you're working on?

I knew someone who started a short story, then every time it was brought up it was extended until the length was close to 100 pages. Hasn't been mentioned in a year, I think. If you nail down a workflow you can avoid this sort of pitfall

Storyboard is done (apart from some revisions here and there) and I've been given the go-ahead to start finishing pages, which I began on Tuesday. At this rate I might be done sooner than expected, possibly even before the end of the year, but we'll see.
For now I'm gonna take the rest of the day off, do the final revisions on the storyboard tomorrow and send those + what I've finished so far in on Monday for feedback.

Manga requires ungodly amount of drawing, period. It's like asking "can I get fast at running without running? I have a condition and can't run" -- even if you get fast at running without actually running... you're gonna have to run to actually use that skill, so what's the point here?

The more I learn about Japan the less I care to appeal to them. I mean I love manga especially from previous decades but whatever japan has become today just doesn't groove with me anymore. I think I'll just focus on making a comic using all the compositional and pacing elements of manga besides the direction it's read in. Weebs won't read it because it's filthy baka gaijin left-to-right filth and comicfags wont read it because it's japanese anime filth. But I don't care anymore, I would rather avoid too much attention in the end anyway, it means fewer whiners and fewer people to disappoint. Someone has to catch failing American comics up to the leagues of manga/manwa/manhua somehow. So fuck it I'll give bridging that gap a few good ole college tries.

My desire to do what I like and want just outweighs my desire to be accepted by a bunch of autistic island people as one of their own. Doesn't mean I don't love manga, it's the opposite, I'm just being realistic about what my choices will mean. American comics are utter dogshit in almost every way. I want to innovate them in ways the comic industry is unwilling to. Which first takes accepting the fact that manga is superior in just about every aspect. I will take the success of my opponent and use it for myself, just like japs did in the mid century. In my view, modern Japanese media is starting to deteriorate. I struggle to find anime to watch anymore and all the manga that look interesting are obscure works that don't even get popular in their home country. I have no choice but to make what I want to see, but what I want to see is outdated in japan, more like what japan offered 20 years ago. That alone could prevent my success if I tried to hack it in japan as a Real Mangaka. So instead of handicapping my visions with worrying about authenticity and success in a foreign market, I will commit fully to my visions. Calling my work a comic is the price I'm willing to pay for that.

Too many panels, you could condense the yawn and the “what time is it” panels into one, same with the “yet another day…” “and oh well…” ones.

I’m guessing this came to happen because you read a lot of webtoons? For webtoons that would be fine, but on a traditional manga page it’s too cluttered.

But you seem to have put thought in the flow of the story and the placement of the text. That’s a classical beginners trap and you managed it very well.

Not him, but that's not even close to the truth. I could see an argument for storyboards contributing 80% of the "quality" of a comic, but that doesn't mean it's the majority of the work. The majority of the work is pretty much always finishing the pages. Storyboards are often completed in days, while it can take weeks or months to draw the finished artwork for said storyboards.

>I agree with you but like you said i was talking about quality
Oh, actually, my mistake. I reread the reply chain and nobody said anything about the time, only how "hard" it is.
To that point, I still don't think I agree that storyboards are the "hardest part", but they're definitely not easy. Still, I think that anon is in trouble if he thinks he's out of the woods once the storyboards are done. He's been working on them for, what, a year now? More? Maybe my perception of time is messed up but it feels like it's been a very long time to me. And yet the storyboards are supposed to be the quick part. Frankly, I don't know what he's expecting out of this. The storyboards will suck and be full of issues. They always are -- that's why they're done as fast as possible, so you can get editorial feedback and redo them (often multuiple times) very quickly before you do the bit that's actually time consuming.

>i grew up with rosario vampire and imizu
Well, use them as examples. That said, there's lots of little effects and details that go into a sex scene that you probably won't find outside of H artists. I won't tell you to find other inspiration, but try to make your inspiration work for you.
>I'm pretty if i trace those pages and do the same thing i would still have this felling
It's not about tracing it, it's about looking closely at the image and trying to spy what they did that you didn't. Things like, "oh, they added a screentone to the breasts just so they could have a highlight on it", or "oh, they flicked some eraser fluid on the page and that gave it more impact". Little effects you might not notice without taking care to look closely at each drawing.
But, it's also entirely possible their style is heavily carried purely by their drawing skill, in which case there really isn't anything you can do but practice practice practice (translation: make a lot of stuff).

Actually, looking at your work a little closer myself, I do see an issue I can point out: when it comes to the sex scenes, you have a bad habit of neglecting backgrounds. You don't need to draw the environment (although you could), but you do need to do something other than leave it blank white (unless it's a very deliberate choice). You seem to have realized this with this demon girl/succubus thing you've posted here, but it does still need work as what you've got is pretty simple/barebones.
Compare >>6933502 to pic related. He's not drawing detailed backgrounds, but he is shading a "surface" underneath the character to imply a sense of space. Even in the panels where he's not trying to do any such thing, he's making sure that the background has a value (in this case a mid-tone, because he doesn't want the tone of the work to be dark) so the character's bodies can stand out, and he's using speed lines to convey a sense of movement.
Then you look at the actual technical execution of the effects -- the skill with which the lines are drawn, the composition of the page as a whole, the skill with which he erases the screentones to convey the shininess of skin, the drippy wetness of the saliva, and so on. It's difficult to reproduce this level of skill without also possessing a similar skill level, but it's important to recognize exactly what elements the artist is using to achieve the effect.

>The whole thing is lazy so it feels like you're trying to be nice or something. Thanks.
I wasn't, the last two panels are so lazy you didn't erase overlapping lines from the bed on his face, arms, and hands
>copy-pasting panels
now this is proper mangaka laziness, good work, you're improving already

How do I stop myself being an "idea's guy" and just jump to fucking making manga for fucks sake? I keep having great ideas and imagine the panelling and jotting down my stuff, but I always end up stopping once I am already on the panelling and drawing, like I have a mental block preventing me from just doing it.

No offense, but it sounds like you don't actually like the act of making comics, just the idea of it. That's fine, I don't either, despite drawing thousands of pages at this point. You gotta come to terms with the fact that the actual making of the comic will always be work. Work can be done by knuckling down and powering through it, if you have the desire to. Actually finishing things is absolutely the hardest part, and it takes a lot of effort to take ideas through to complete works, even small ideas.

Before the threads ends, why don't anons say a number between 1 and 45 (except 38,31,29, 22 and 11 since those are mostly backgrounds that i will drawn in digital) and i post the number of that page so anons can judge if i can post it to proofread it or i just keep going until i finish it...

In case you're still wondering, IC screen (the big screentone brand alongside Deleter) has been slowly uploading their screentones to Clip Studio and they're 600dpi. Both digital and print publications ask for either 1200dpi or 600dpi for completed manuscripts.
