When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Study I did today, took me a few hours. I definitely messed up proportions on most of them, but alas.
When you guys do studies, what do you do in order to get as much out of them as possible? So far, all I really do is observe and recreate it the best I can, and then overlap the reference to see how far off I was.

Nice studies. But I dropped jujutsu kaisen two years ago because I hate the art. When you do studies, I think about how the artist is drawing/constructing. It's especially helpful if you get to see unfinished drawings. How did they approach it?

>>6908414
It looks like you're drawing circles and doing what you think is constructing the head, but you have no concept of proportions yet. It's cool if you want to keep drawing alucard etc, but try doing some observational drawings/still life drawings/bargue plates to get your accuracy up. You would benefit from drawing copies of Alucard art, even. Aim for exactness, you just need to observe better at this point.

I've been practicing still lifes in gouache and it's working much better than the pencil rendering, which makes me think it doens't translate very well between different mediums. I did some gradients in pencil, pen and prismacolor, and it looks ok comparing to a value scale I printed, but it doesn't seem to be translating to my value studies as well.

Also, what would you recommend studying before I worry about rendering again?

The physical technique of gouache and graphite are pretty different. Do still life drawings with graphite and strictly limit yourself to 5 values. If you want to get better with graphite you need more mileage with it.

But are you trying to work on portraits right now? I would stick with limiting your values and pumping out more portrait practice for the time being. The work you posted isn't terrible but I think you're drawing a few of the features exactly the same across all 3 heads. Most evident with the lips, etc. Trying to focus on rendering more might be muddying the form too. Do you have the refs?

Alright so got tired again as it's late so I am calling quits on this, though I'll try drawing her again maybe tomorrow or later, either way, figured I should just post her so I can figure out what to do next time I draw her.

I struggled with getting the eyes to wrap around the 3D head as well as the blush marks. Originally I was just going to draw her head but then decided to attempt to draw her shoulders and such, but didn't really go very far (but I will next time I attempt to draw her).

I couldn't have drawn something like this weeks ago, this was a mixture of reference with a little bit of imagination.

are these drafts youre making supposed to be finished products? are u trying to put whats in your mind on paper? because thats not the goal here, the goal is to draw throwaway art constantly until it starts resembling something, once it resembles something, you throw that away too, you shouldnt expand on it. every drawing you make should be made with the intention of a click, once something clicks, its in place, this could be as simple as line placement or an aesthetic shape, now just keep doing this until you get hundreds of clicks, none of your unreferenced art is gonna look good until u get past these hurdles

honestly you shouldnt even be having visions of drawings at this point, it should really just be the boring gesture and anatomy practice. if you really want to draw just make weird shapes and shade them, you can also draw patterns, both of these will inadvertently help you improve your general pencil control, your line weights, your pencil pressure, and how to make visually appealing shapes (which is very very important in all aspects of art, landscapes, people, vehicles, etc) , all while not forcing you to think about much or doubt yourself, drawing people is tricky, and without the necessary knowledge it can become very overwhelming trying to complete a drawing. its like building a cabinet you got from ikea with no tools. now in this scenario the hardware store is about a couple years drive away, now go get those tools or this cabinet isnt going to get built.

I like it when people work on their figure drawing, I think you're definitely going in the right direction. My advice for you to improve faster, is to start spending the majority of your study time copying artwork, instead of photos of nude models. Doing the "Copy Bridgman Twice" regimen would be a great idea for you, if you haven't done it already. It doesn't have to be Bridgman, but copying lines instead of photos will help you improve faster.

In the 18th century, hundreds of French students in all the art schools across France would compete in a rigorous national examination to win the Prix de Rome, a state sponsored 4 year trip to Rome. What was the purpose of moving to Rome? To study the old masters first hand. Studying the Old Masters was considered "more valuable" than drawing from life or their drawing textbooks.

Copy!

Eris Day 2. I didn't have anywhere near the same amount of time I did yesterday due to overtime, but I attempted to work with the slim hour I had and redraw the face. I tried keeping in mind the triangles the other anon talked about which seemed to help a lot with the general shape of the face - even if its still off. She has ears now though, which is an improvement. Its still a bit off. Everything is bigger. I need to focus on proportions and measuring things out more and make certain everything actually aligns. I'll be able to grind harder tomorrow. I think I should focus on just drawing heads with proper proportions and different angles to not worry about the hair just yet for my practice before attempting another Eris head. /blog.

Whenever I start drawing, i literally can't make sense of something as simple as drawing hair. I can't understand 3D perspective nor make sense of it in my brain.
The biggest problem for me is literally getting up enough energy and motivation to even do this at all. Remember how I said I couldn't even play video games? It applies doubly so for artwork and doing literally any practice of this. I want to try, but I can almost never actually make myself do any of it.
I don't know why these seem so daunting. Literal 14 year old kids become masters at these all the time, and yet I can't do it for the life of me. I've never been able to actually commit myself to doing any of this. I quit SFM because I literally couldn't understand it and didn't bother watching any tutorials.
Not even mentioning the fact that reading these books is incredibly difficult for me to begin with. I don't know if I'd want to draw something that I don't want to draw, but then I don't even know what I want to draw to begin with. Just random things that I'm hyperfixating on at the moment.
m literally too retarded for basic trig. Even took a math placement test recently and fucking couldn't remember how to figure out the perimeter of a square or find the lengths of certain sides of a shape. I want to be able to do literally anything else except sitting in my room, jerking off and going to sleep. I want to give myself a year only because I've procrastinated on making my own artwork for years and years since I was a teenager. Now I'm 24 and have made no progress. I'm giving myself only a year otherwise I'm committing suicide. Because I have virtually nothing else to live for. Every time I think about how I'm unable to be an artist it only makes me more and more depressed. I want to finally become one.

Before anyone points it out:

1. Yes the vanishing point was half arsed and done at the last minute after the arm was drawn.
2. I don't know how to draw fingers yet.
3. I merely applied my knowledge of perspective to this just to see what would happen.
4. Those shapes at the shoulder area are just the shoulder and armpit area shapes.
5. Yes the Vanishing Point lines were not done with a ruler I was lazy.

With that out of the way, does it look like I understand perspective? Or are these shapes somehow "symbols" or not?

Also here is another study, but I am either burnt out (my sleep's been sucky lately) or I just struggle with backs cuz I really struggled with this one.

Should I just draw stuff I enjoy at this point? Or focus on getting my sleep in order so I can get to work on things better?

honestly i consider museums with "modern art" as garbage. That top middle pic could be right there with other contemporary art. Now to give you some actual advice: learn how to draw (and render) with pencil / charcoal first and foremost. First it is way cheaper and faster to use (no cleaning brushes, no mixing paint), secondly there is no space to hide behind "its my style" cope. Do book Keys to drawing. Now that wont put you closer to art galleries, but at least you will actually learn how to draw which will come handy in painting

A good exercise is trying to draw with the least amount of lines possible.
Think of it as grammar, the more lines you have the more words you got and the page.
However your statement will ring more true if you use less to say more, because ultimately lines don’t really exist they are just boundaries between color shapes.
When you put a line you tell the viewer here is a divide, any line is a pretty powerful statement of its own, using too many will make for a cluttered suffocating feeling as if you were trying to shut people in an overcrowded space, you might wanna study animation for that, making many drawings while trying to keep your line economy as austere as it gets so you can get to the next key drawing

First of all, get a drawing tablet. Drawing with a mouse is too limiting. Wacom, Huion or XP-Pen brands are all fine. Medium sized or larger. Small ones are bad for your wrist. They're pretty affordable these days. Buy a used one if you have to, a lot of them will have only been used a couple of times.
Tracing is a crutch. You will only get better at tracing, not drawing. When you start drawing without tracing your drawings will look worse but you'll have to push through this if you want to get better in the long run. Replace tracing stuff you like with copying stuff you like.
Mirroring the drawing will always look strange because things are naturally never perfectly symmetrical, so I wouldn't advise doing that. Just draw both sides, it's tricky at first and more work but it's a skill you need to develop.

You almost never want to use fully saturated colors like those and they don't work well together. Watch these videos to see how to choose colors that work together.

To be honest when I draw with a mouse I use the line tool on Paint.net and then manipulate the four points. I always felt that I could make smooth lines with them. Is the tablet really necessary?

You have a good point on stopping the tracing and mirroring. I guess I never wanted to leap out the comfort zone.

It's still a good idea to use references for things like proportions though right?

Kind of depends on the end result you want. Does the art you like and want to make have clean lines? If you want smooth lines then using the line tool with a mouse isn't the worst approach as long as it's not too tedious for you. You don't have to use a tablet but most of the digital art you like was probably made using one. Using a drawing tablet is a lot more intuitive for most people but requires a lot of practice to get clean lines. You can use brush stabilization to help, it's built in to most art software these days. The pressure sensitivity also lets you create different types of lines.

One downside with the line tools is a that the lines are all uniform in thickness giving it what some may find a sterile or boring look. Clip Studio Paint has vector tools has useful features for artists. The line width correction tool can change the thickness of the lines so that you can get thick and thin lines without a pressure sensitive tablet. Also the vector eraser tool so you can draw overlapping lines and just cleanly erase over the lines that stick out, which can save a lot of time.

Not familiar specifically with paint.net features but it may have similar tools.

Yeah references for proportions is fine. Referencing for anything is perfectly fine. It's tracing that is a bad habit. You can trace after trying to copy it first or overlay it to help see where you went wrong too.

- drawing with a mouse is fine, you might want to switch to a software that supports stabilization if you find your lines too unreliable, Krita is a free alternative that is a bit more advanced than paint.net.

- stop using the line tool for most things and start using more brush tool. Yes, it's harder but everything having a fixed line weight gives a stiff and unappealing look. try to use more tapering lines by either building or cutting into the lines.

- Mirrored drawings tend to look cheap. It's fine to have references but straight up tracing is probably something you want to move away from.

- try to pick up some basics on shading to move your characters past just a flat fill color.

- learn basic figure drawing / construction to get more dimensionality

complete and utter garbage
you are trying to achieve something while lacking the tools required
your lines are shit. relationships are nonexistent. there are no forms, no planes. no light and shade. the proportions are wrong. no usage of the concept of action. and you havent constructed the basic structure of the figure.
practice without the tools needed for the practice is pointless. you are on the train to nowhere. doing this will get you nowhere.
you first need the tools. which i have listed for your convenience in my post.
