You could steal the composition from your reference, i.e. crop the top half off (goodbye feet) so she's coming off-canvas, appearing bigger. Then, move your other subject in further (or extend the canvas bottom-right) like in the reference, to establish it as a focal point.

When I first started learning Chinese, the thing that our professor told us that always stuck with me is that when you learn a new language, you're a baby. Babies don't care what other people think of them. They just explore and learn. They copy others as exactly as they can. You need to understand that you are, and need to be, a baby right now.

With both language learning and art, getting too deep into the theory too early in your growth is useless. You can't do anything with it yet. Get your fundamental skills down so you can start doing more fun stuff, aka drawing things that are closer to what you envision in your mind.

Copy, learn. Don't worry about if you're not good enough, babies don't give a shit.

If you want to read more about dropping your ego go read Marcus Aurelius, unironically.

>> No.6904802

>>6904786
When I say copy, learn - I don't mean study without direction. Definitely go through the fundamentals. Observational drawing, form and perspective, figure, construction, etc. And give yourself projects that you're interested along the way. What I mean is don't get bogged down in theory too much in the beginning. Don't stress over which is the absolute best class or path for you. You'll figure it out more a little later down the road. You just need to keep going and be consistent right now. That's literally all that matters. Any skill is hard and unfun in the beginning, because you're frustrated. You can't make what you want to make. But that will pass if you keep going.

IMO try to find a reference with simpler lighting at a similar angle. Yours has a bunch of ambient/reflected lighting you're not quite grasping and your values are too light or too dark in places.

A few obvious points:
You've made the reflected lighting under the brow the same as the highlight above, it's much darker.
Value under nose should be darker.
You have a very bright area just left of the mouth which doesn't make sense.
You could merge that area and the cheek with one large shadow shape, or at least enlarge the cheek's shadow, play with it.

Check out how Bauman has grouped the side-plane of the face with part of the muzzle and lips using just one shadow shape:
https://youtu.be/J9te8gL30Dw
Also at around 5:00 he emphasized the core shadow.

>fat
>depressed
Oh well no wonder, then. Of course you don’t feel motivated to do art, Anon. No matter how well you draw. You’re depressed, silly. Good news is depression and obesity are actually easy to fix. Well, simple to fix. For the next 30 days (it’ll start working sooner, within the week) I want you to do this:
>eat literally ONLY FATTY RED MEAT and salt to taste
>do not eat literally ANYTHING else except prescribed meds
>drink ONLY pure water
>drink literally nothing else

Talk to your doctor about monitoring any meds you take as you will probably need them to lower the dosage, especially if you’re on anything like insulin, metformin, painkillers, or blood pressure meds.

If you’re caffeine dependent, then detoxing from caffeine might suck too much along with everything else, so you might want to take low dose caffeine pills to stave off headaches. Caffeine pills are preferable to drinking coffee in this case, because you’re doing an elimination diet. But if you’re only an occasional coffee drinker, you can try stopping cold turkey.

Do that and your depression will go away.
It’ll just not be there anymore
Try it.
If I’m wrong, you can kill yourself just to spite me if you want. But REALLY try it exactly as described for at least 30 days. You’ll feel it start working before then, but give it the full 30 days at least to assure yourself it’s not placebo. Then you can begin slowly adding back one animal-based food at a time, every couple weeks if you want — like eggs or chicken or butter — and see how you do. But start off as strict as you can for the fastest result.

That instinct whispering that life shouldn’t be this way, that it can be different if you only knew how? It’s right. You can do it, Anon.

>t. put treatment-resistant suicidal depression in complete remission for 5 years and counting with a carnivore diet. Plus other neat stuff including losing about 100 pounds of fat and gaining about 12 pounds of muscle.

Use chatGPT or ClaudeAI as a tool to help you flesh out the writing and the big chunky idea things.

Go through Brent Eviston’s or Proko’s beg course and then instead of copying Bridgman twice, copy your show’s art books or screenshots from each episode or whatever. Do the drawings from reference and then again from memory. Copy the art you want to emulate just like repeating words in a language you want to learn.

The differentiation in line weights on the left better conveys a sense of depth given the perspective you're viewing her from compared to the right. As a general rule, outlines should be thick, detail lines and interconnecting lines within the outlines should be thinner than the outlines, and things closer to the viewer should have thicker lines than things further from the viewer.

The rib cage is sort of shaped like a boxy egg, but the shoulder girdle is kind of square at the top, the front of the rib cage is a flat plane, and the lowest attached ribs kind of make corners. But the back and sides are pretty round. So there are aspects of the rib cage that are best thought of as being egg like, and aspects that are best though of as box like. For general poses, I kind of tend to use an egg shape first to get the mass of the ribcage in place. Then I make it a little boxy to solidify the perspective. For back views, I usually only need the egg shape and the center line of the spine since you don’t see the corners of the ribs from the back. Different views of the ribcage will look more like boxes or more like eggs or more like cylinders. (I rarely use cylinders.)
For any twisty poses and especially for foreshortened poses, I usually just go straight to the box construction.

Some of it is preference, but it’s more like which tool are you gonna use for which job. It’s about whichever construction helps you understand/visualize/think about that stage of that drawing of that pose in that moment.

It’s like asking whether to use a screwdriver or an impact driver. They both drive screws and will get you to the same place, just differently. Even so, which you use depends on you and your task. If there’s a screw that’s backed out slightly, you might reach for the screwdriver. You might find that it’s tougher than you thought, and grab the impact to drive it home the last turn. If you need to drive a screw through a 2x4, you might want the impact. If you’re driving a screw into delicate plastic trim on an old car, you might want to consider the screwdriver instead.

The point is: Have both tools available whenever you need. So practice both boxes and eggs. And practice “boxifying” eggs and “eggifying” boxes.

Here’s some old gestures. Mostly egg-based. Whereas this >>6905238 was purely boxy. No rules, only tools.

look like you’ve improved going from top to bottom. I think you’re learning to utilize the thickness of line better, but maybe you’re still drawing too fast. what helps me is to not attempt to outline something but instead pretend that my pencil is a brush with varying thickness and hue and then shading into the lines that i draw. If it helps bridge the gap in your mind draw bigger or smaller, get a really fat pencil, and maybe a highlighting eraser. Idk if this is bad advice but it’s been helping me.

1. a lot of pros in art are self taught. that implies that art schools are either scam or completely redundant
2. be extremely wary of any uni degree course with words like business, science, information. these often are either completely useless in real life job market or scams. instead look for courses with words like applied, engineering, technology. these actually teach you something usable. so if you want to learn how to code the best is software engineering

No not really, just drawing an easter island head. On that note though, I think you need to take care with positioning the features a bit more. my quick poses only improved when I focused more on long poses. I recommend 15-20 minutes per study at least. Draw the same picture over and over again, until you see significant improvement from your first attempt compared to your last attempt. You could spend an hour drawing the same image in this way. Just remember that all drawing is proportion, and nothing else.

day 100
I finished this yesterday but was too tired to write the blog
After 100 days of daily studies I'm not sure how much it was worth. I learned a lot of things but as I already thought you need to study directly what you're trying to draw for best effects.I know more things now but my drawings from imagination are nearly the same. Following a study>/justdraw/>study>/justdraw/>study>/justdraw/>... schedule would be more effective. With this daily drawing challenge There were spans of days where I didn't draw anything from imagination. On the other hand dedicating yourself solely to studies makes you more patient.
I started by drawing the cube structures, it took me a while to get a hang of them and the idea was to make them more and more convoluted until I had immense spatial imagination. While that got me better at perspective the plan ultimately failed because I didn't foresee how hard diminishing returns kick in.
I made a blog somewhere around day 50, I expected more of my /beg/ bros to follow me but I didn't get much followers. I got 150 likes by tagging someone but that didn't translate to new followers. The idea was to put my degenerate drawings on that blog but I chickened out for some reason. It's hard to choose between sfw and nsfw, how do you choose?
I also finally found an artist I want to copy, that being mossacannibalis

Last note on mass-replying. For most days I tried to limit how many people I reply to, if you reply to everyone then the (you) gets devalued. I think it's better to reply only when you're genuinely interested.

Don't really know where to ask this so I'll post it here.
I'm currently interning (unpaid) at a marketing company and have been for almost 2 weeks now making graphic art. Every day for 2 weeks I show up before everyone else and leave after everyone else does so I'm pulling nine-to-fivers plus the extra time, again, unpaid. They said right at the start not to expect anything from this in terms of opportunities which didn't bother me since experience is experience you know and besides, as nice as everyone is I simply do not enjoy the kind of stuff we do, it's incredibly boring and doesn't even fit my portfolio all too well. Come today I find out via an unreliable third party that these 2 weeks are not the finish of it, rather this could go on for a couple of months. Outside of this I'm just your run of the mill Neet so if I quit I'd be going back to that lifestyle, but if I stay I'd be trapped doing unpaid work for a job I don't really even enjoy for a slither of a molecule of a chance to be hired (which has never been brought up) which could be good since they seem to pay a lot. So my question is; what would you do?

Is it for college and you're required to do an internship? You may have to tough it out. Talk to your school. Otherwise tell them to go screw, I don't know where you're from but at least in the US (where the law is rarely enforced and young people usual take it up the ass for a chance to get into the industry) can't legally try and replace real employees with unpaid interns. Germany's immigration law reforms will be introduced in three stages starting in November this year. The first stages of a new law that will make it easier for skilled workers from outside the EU to move to Germany are expected to come in November. The German government gave its final approval for the law in July this year. It is expected to come into force in three steps in November 2023, March 2024 and June 2024. The new law aims to attract skilled foreign workers and combat labour shortages in the country.

The plans to modernise the country's immigration legislation are expected to make it easier for third-country nationals to work in Germany. It could increase the number of non-EU workers in Germany by 60,000 per year. The reforms to the Skilled Immigration Act particularly focus on workers with vocational, non-academic training. Existing rules for qualified professionals with university degrees will also be relaxed.
>Why is Germany changing its immigration policies?
Like many countries in Europe, Germany is facing a shortage of skilled workers. In 2022, the country's labour shortage rose to an all-time high: the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) found 1.74 million vacant positions throughout Germany. In July last year, staff shortages affected almost half of all companies surveyed by Munich-based research institute IFO, forcing them to slow down their operations. It hopes to fill this gap with qualified professionals from outside the EU. But currently, red tape is slowing down the country's immigration process.

“We know that we can only guarantee our future, the efficiency of our economy and the efficiency of our social security systems if we have enough skilled workers at our disposal,” said Scholz. “From within the European Union, that's not so difficult, because there is freedom of movement. With regard to the rest of the world, it is a greater challenge,” he added.

Do exactly that, and then move your drawing on top of the reference to see how close you got. Then try again. Then again from memory. That will train accuracy like a motherfucker, but you better choose good stuff to study otherwise you’ll internalize their mistakes. If you study art with bad anatomy, you’ll learn bad anatomy, etc.

Tracing can help force you to slow down and really fucking pay attention to subtle details in good line work so you can better understand them. Drawing construction over a reference limage and drawing ecorche over a reference photo are legit ways to practice construction and anatomy. But the best is probably to copy the ref then compare it to train accuracy.

>>6907436
Yeah. Just try to half-ass draw a circle, cuz that technically counts as “doing drawing.” That one thing is all it takes to overcome the inertia, and then you can maybe draw two circles. If you’re not feeling it, then you drew for the day. If you are feeling it, keep going. You don’t have to “sit down to draw” all serious like. Just make a circle.

Set a goal for yourself, as long as you draw at least 10 minutes you're good, etc. It's getting easier and more fun to draw. When I can't think of anything, I do two 5 minute poses.

You're learning, just practice more and you'll get a feel for proportions and linework

1: try to use less sketchy lines, put down confident strokes, if you practice sketchy unconfident linework then that's all you'll get good at

2: work on figure drawing, your bodies are anatomically off but this will come to you with mileage, drawing a few hundred figures or just 2 or 3 a day for the next 20 days should be a good start

3: You're drawing symbols of what you think you're seeing rather than just copying. Try to create the lines as closely as you can to the reference, once you get good at that then you can work on exaggerating or changing styles/proportions. Of course you should still draw for fun and whatever you want in whatever way you see fit but when studying focus on recreating what you see, not what the brain fills in as a shortcut

Keep at it

Day 1 of drawing Eris Greyrat. I'd like to do this for thirty days and see if I feel any improvement. I've been drawing on & off for nearly a year. I did all the exercises in Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain. all the exercises with Fun with a Pencil - and I feel like I didn't accomplish much, that I'm not getting better. Unless I take hours and hours to meticulously measure things, proportions are off, alignments are off, etc. There has to be a better way, and so instead of doing these random exercises with the intent to "get good" and then draw what I want - I decided fuck it. I will draw what I want and see if my impenetrably amounts of self loathing autism forces me to improve.

My inability to properly measure things in a timely matter is clearly seen in the picture. Shits wonky, clearly and it gives me a very obvious metric to focus on. It took me about forty five minutes to do the middle image, and then another hour and a half to line art / color it. Not happy with the results. Where did her ears go? How did I manage to fuck up the little horns on the side of her head so badly? How did her eyes get so fucking wonky despite the fact I was using guidelines and a compass to make the initial circle? Even her ahoge is way too thick in the finale art. I need to break out of the habit of drawing with pencil & paper on my lap, while my tablet is upright on my desk. Its making things more difficult than it needs to be. I will need to reference anime head construction again as well. But today is day 1. I will see you tomorrow for day 2. I do not know if I will attempt this image again or another head shot of Eris but we shall see.

For day one this is really good. I think the main thing that throws this off is the length of the face. What really helped me understand head/face construction is using triangles. One triangle to connect the two corners of the eyes to the nose, and another one to connect the two corners of the eyes to the chin. By adjusting the width/height of these triangles you can change the appearance of the face.
The orignal character is young and thus has a very short and wide triangles in her head construction. The triangles that make up your head construction are far longer and more narrow, giving her a more mature look. This is also what is causing your ears to disappear. Since the ears are on the same level as the eyes with this more mature look they'll be higher up and more hidden.
It also helps keep facial features in line. On yours her right eye is far closer to the nose than the left eye giving you a lopsided inner triangle which makes her eyes appear like they're being viewed at an angle when the head is drawn at a forward facing view.
Hope this helps in someway, keep it up!

yep yep, other anon is just straight up wrong, chasing perfect lines over form is a sure way to ngmi.

Can't tell if sarcasm.

The thing is I can do straighter lines than I used to but I am still not perfect at it. I thiink ultimately I need to start constructing the arms and legs rather than drawing out the muscles from the get go, would make for better figures and would allow me to draw from imagination better.

Right gotcha.

I'll do more drawing later and then try to draw something partially from imagination. I've said this before but it feels like my hands respond more to my mind compared to a few weeks ago better if that makes sense?

You're just getting used to using muscles in your arm/hand you're not normally using/never used.
It's like brushing your teeth with your non dominant hand.

Oh yeah, for sure.

But I mean I can better at also detecting how contour lines should work and my ability to construct things even if it's from reference is a lot more accurate than it ever was...not great but I can at least make something look like the thing I am seeing.

Someone should make a new thread so I can continue to not bother drawing in that one.

>> No.6908323

I posted in the other thread, but does anyone happen to have good pose reference books? Like of real models (male and female)?
Would save me needing to google all the time for new reference images.

I'm fine with SFW and NSFW poses.
