This is why comics are shit and ugly and generic and sells like smelling shit.

Reminder that Marvel is a money pit for Disney and is only there to basically write scripts for their movies.
And all the numbers of sales are inflated with shenanigans where they over stock orders, bundle them and give them away so they can claim higher numbers.
So whenever you get any advice from anyone at Marvel understand that they are basically a charity/welfare division of Disney and would not survive on their own without gutting the company.

Again, I'm quite unfamiliar with the details, but the guy definitely has a track record, and has been working in the industry for two decades: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._B._Cebulski

Of course, we can (and I do) have negative opinions on the state of the comic industry. But that doesn't prevent the guy from being skilled at spotting good/bad artists, and having, from experience, developed good heuristic to spot them. He may also have an okay sense of which trends to follow to get money from people.

See, Stalin thought that Le Good Way To Rule was to starve to death literally millions of people. It's obviously an ultimate dick move. But being an asshole didn't prevented him from preserving traditional Western art education, and Russia is the only place in Europe where the lineage hasn't been broken, thanks to him. Ofc, he did this to help with propaganda and shit, but still.

Balance dude, not blind rage.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't particularly enjoy manga either. There are ten of thousands titles, they are pressured into making endless series and churn volume after volume.

I have no idea where to start, and the mangas I hear people talk about leave me indifferent. I've enjoyed a few animes thought (sometimes tied to mangas). Some of them have some sweetness/light touch to them, pleasant colors, etc.

But the mangas themselves too often feel like rushed work to me. Anywaaay.

listening to editors in western comic is idiotic. They have never been in a truly competitive marketplace. selling to a small number of fanboys and idiots thinking they're getting the next action comics #1 has been their MO for the last 30 years.
With such little pressure to keep good storytelling and entertainment the main focus, it means they've had little reason to actually understand why people enjoy storytelling

>But that doesn't prevent the guy from being skilled at spotting good/bad artists,

They are proven to be terrible at spotting talent because modern/current cape comics are not renowned for their sequencing, composition, or action the same way manga is. People waited YEARS to see saitama fight garou or luffy fight kaidou but nobody gives a single shit who the 30th spider-person is fighting with the same stock generic poses for 2 pages.

It's more subtle/nuanced than that.

A structural problem for any Big Business is that too much innovation threaten the current cash flow. But not innovating is also problematic, and finding a balance is difficult:it requires ingenuity and bravery, both of which are scare human qualities.

That's why Big Businesses often play it safe: they keep the current inertia going as much as possible, i.e. minimize innovation. Look at Amazon UI: it's not like they don't have pockets big enough to improve on that 2001-style, but it's simply not worth doing.

The point is, you can't really understand and appreciate the situation purely from an art-enjoyer point of view, because things simply don't move following that point of view.

I'm not saying that you're wrong in the context where you're evaluating things, but the context in which you're evaluating things is too narrow to fully appreciate the situation, and you're bound to stay angry if you don't update your point of view.

I also think that people can't really play the victims today: if you have the skills, have a good story, good graphics, you just need a little bit of marketing to find buyers/backers online. Internet really is a blessing in this regard, because you can bypass Ye Old Behemoths much more easily.

Honestly man, why go to bat this hard for suits and hacks? I think we all basically get that there are two sides to every story and that "the issue is complex," but this is basically a bitch-off thread where anons can rage about the unending incompetence of the comics industry. Comics have sucked shit and been culturally irrelevant at least since I was born (early 90s) and it's because of retarded, greedy, short-sighted executives fucking everything up for a quick buck.
I refuse to "look at it from their POV", because they see me and you as an ant.
I relate to Goku and Naruto more than Superman and Batman (the comic book versions at least) as a direct consequence of their fuckups going all the way back to the Comics Code. They deserve the hard fucking the japs are and have been giving them for decades now.

Main difference between the JP and western comics scenes is the well developed doujinshi community. Doujin creators have just as much clout as the corporate publishers when it comes to setting trends.

>> No.6907684

>A structural problem for any Big Business is that too much innovation threaten the current cash flow
In a traditional business, sure. In a creative business like comics/manga no. Manga has kicked comics ass BECAUSE it has kept up innovations. It has never stiflied itself too long, it always captured and reflected the zeitgeist

70s/80s - Action and Kung Fu Movies - Fist of the North Star, Dragon Ball
90s/00s - The rise of trilogies/big adventure movies - One Piece, Naruto
10s- Capeshit - My hero, One Punch man

The times are currently headed that most people are going to have financial hardship, has Marvel or DC tried to capitalize on this by making a new fresh batch of "heroes" who are thieves? Japan had the foresight to drop a Lupin the third movie in 2020 because of that.

The Western Industry is decaying because its led by the equivalent of tenured teachers of writers and artists. Writing stories and themes that are out of touch with the common man

huh, now that i think about it, don't doujinshi resemble comics far more in format?

obviously with the main difference being creative control.
this kinda shows that the comic industry really should have taken more risks with creators, especially with all the movie money going in.
cultivating a breath of works at a loss or breaking even is probably still better for the long term of the industry. it's the profit hungriness that is destroying the medium for these companies.

though then again, a lot of doujins are fan works of existing IPs, so not like it's something marvel or DC could do.

Marvel is open about this and is why they stopped promoting artists and kept tight reigns on what and how they do things never letting anyone get a huge as the image guys. Comics are dying because their accessibility is dogshit.

If I could get the biggest series from Amazon along with my dragon dildos or if there was some sort of app where I could read all I want including stuff from the 60s you can't even find legally anymore for 9$ a month with analytics telling me which series I might care about after I read enough, I'd probably buy most of the stuff I'm currently pirating.

As Todd Mcfarlene has once said, the suits and editors like that FAT fuck in the video will give creative types control of a series if the comics are not selling well. But once that comic began to sell well, the suits and editors will do EVERYTHING to reign the creator in and take the comic line that you are able to bring up the gutter.
Marvel did that to Todd and many other artists, which is the reason why Image shows up.

And you think Marvel or DC would allow any competitor to show up and overthrow capeshit? Fat chance.
