If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Values are kinda more important as they are the building blocks that your rendering/colors sit on, here are some changes I would make, they're subtle but your color choices and rendering are already pretty great.

Like the other anon said - establish proportions and angles first. Gesture drawing will teach you to get that down fast.

Housekeeping: I know shit about anatomy, but I like looking for cool shapes and simplifying/designing stuff.
That being said: red lines on your drawing show the nice looking curves from the ref you could have exaggerated. Instead, you did the opposite and toned them down, making the figure look boring. General proportions can be compared by overlapping images so I wont bother criticizing. Head is an egg.
Red lines on the ref show the kind of stuff I put on my top priority list while drawing from reference.
My attempt at the right.

Try again anon. Ugly creations can be discouraging, but the probability to get it better the next time is too big not to do it. I had to draw the girl 4 times before I liked what I saw.

>>6897934
anons will tell you to draw in higher resolution so we can give better feedback on details, if things simplified wrong to fit this res it'll just "look bad" rather than being something specific or workable. pretty sure there shouldn't be a reflective highlight under the thigh closest to us, definitely draw something higher res and come back though
>>6897705
lots of this looks symbol-drawn, stick to one species and try drawing from reference to start. i like this layout though, maybe choose 2-3 refs, copy and learn from them and then lay them out like this and redraw the lighting to fit?

vilppu vilppu, focus on getting the flow through the body. ex top-middle, the longest line would be down the spine, through the bottom of the thigh, round the top of the knee and down the shin. we have the thigh flow but we're missing the knee-shin and back-neck flow. keep practicing, figures are a bitch to learn

I like seeing your studies and exercises, it’s neat to see the techniques you use. It’s useful. You’ll get the hands down in no time, I can feel it. I feel it deep in my plums. You might get there faster if you do a gestural shorthand version of hands and feet for all your practice poses, just to further get the shape internalized. I found that I started to suck less at visualizing head shapes in perspective when I began to add them to every gesture drawing. Still can’t into faces lol.
>>6897882
I like the rightmost head in the second row, with the pink hair, and also the second from left in the bottom row with the golden everything. Plus the line drawing dead center, and the black haired girl in the bottom right. They all have more volume and dimension to them than the others.
>>6897817
Haven’t seen that one yet. Bridgman?
>>6897705
Pretty ambitious. You’re definitely gonna make it. In addition to what the other anon said, I’d construct one animal out of basic volumes, and then position that animal head around the light in different angles. That would probably be more useful for you to do than trying to draw a bunch of different ones. Maybe even start out by rotating simple primitive forms around the light source, like wedges and boxes. Keep it up!
>>6897507
Interesting. I was gonna skip the heads when I get back around to Bridgman. How have your heads/portraits improved?
>>6897409
Not bad at all desu. A bit lacking in rhythm tho; try adding Vilppu or Gnass or Hampton gestures.

If it's a hobby then Nope just learn on your own at your own pace unless you have extra time and money. The stomach bulge on the reference is much more pronounced, and her ribcage is slightly protruding and creating tension below her breast. Her left hand also ought be on outside and slightly underneath her but. Looks like the upper arm is too short. Overall pretty good anon.

I'm not 100% sure, but I recall there were a few consistent issues that I think may have caused the merge:
1. There were a lot of overlapping questions in both threads due to low skill levels. Might as well keep them in one place since being actually good puts you on a whole different level than us.
2. A lot of people at our low skill level don't know when BEG ends and INT begins, so you had people from both sides joining both types of threads when they weren't "supposed to". Both sides were mad because "their" thread was being taken over by those who obviously didn't belong (too low or too high a skill level).
3. There were multiple BEG and INT threads going on at the same time, so a lot of folks were jumping around between them all, on top of not knowing where they really were supposed to be.
4. Arguments and frustration between posters was common, with folks disagreeing who was BEG and who was INT when people showed their work, missing the entire point of these threads.
>>6899087
>>6899098
Case in point
5. Putting BEGs and INTs into one thread means there's no "outside" group and we can all be shit together (some of us more than others). There's also no meaningful distinction between the two categories of artists in the grand scheme of things, as amazing artists and pros are easily identifiable among the trash (just check the catalogue).

They aren't. Feet are. Forearms make a heart shape on the inside where the bicep goes. On the outside the muscles follow the bone and they go/come from under the ones that make the heart shape. The one muscle on the top of the forearm also goes up between the bicep and triceps. From the outside on a straight arm it makes a lightning bolt. Think of braided hair. The best thing about anatomy is that you don't have to be able to draw it like an encyclopedia breakdown because it is usually going to be covered in skin. Made 3 more Bargue eyes. The second row. Tried to keep in mind anon's suggestion not to spend half an hour per eye. I'm not quite as accurate as with the 30 min eyes, but I would say it's a decent tradeoff between speed and accuracy

I would say all three are "passing grade", but the one on the right isn't quite as good as the two on the left. The eyebrow/skull line above the eye on that one is not quite right , and the space between the line and the eye ended up being a bit "fatter" than the original. Redundant as this is all advice. Doesn't make it bad advice.
>randomly copying
It isn't random. Art is feel, dumb dumb. Better than "Let me pick an artist to draw like. Ok. Now I must do this for X amount. Ok. Now another."

You like the way someone does line weight or thatching or eyebrows you use that when you feel like it. Sitting down and copying something 1:1 sounds like such a chore I don't see why anyone would cling to that. Do it for a while, sure, but I dropped it as soon as I could. I was remembering things I learned by copying when I was a kid and mixing it with things I learned from studying other artists (eyeing mostly not 1:1) as soon as I could. I stopped 1:1'ing as a pup after maybe a few months, tops. Branch out, stop being scared of ruining it, it's just paper. Erase what doesn't work even if it looks good otherwise. You CAN always redraw it.

Then there's a misunderstanding, the assumption was one would carefully study aspects from the masters or their favorites after plenty of deliberation. And you're right that a lot of artists start out by doing that. In fact, they'll do it well into their working careers.

I don’t wanna sound like a retard but on proko’s channel there are a few good vids on color.
Seek the Marco Bucci’s ones, greatest takeaway is rather than painting things we should paint the light source.
Basically you got the base colors and unless it’s an overcast day you will rarely see just that, sunlight has some inherent color in it and any artificial light has some kind of saturated color transferring over anything it touches.
Now this color, the light’s hue, PULLS whatever bass color it hits in its own direction.
If it’s orangish and you got a really saturated red, the red will move over the color circle to get closer in its hue to the light source’s orange hue.
Now the same goes for the shadow colors but in the opposite direction, keep in mind the color wheel.
Now rather than getting closer to the light source not only are going to lower the value but also move the hue AWAY from the light source’s orange hue(opposite orange we have blues and purples).
This likely means desaturating your color to colder greys.
The vid is pretty good on the topic, but color theory should be the stuff you learn all your life.
You got people like Goethe who weren’t even painters but were absolutely fascinated by the concept and spent decades trying to understand the phenomenon.
Also try exploring munsell’s color theory and the idea of color as a space, I had this useless art book on color from an obscure German painter, Otto Von Runge, and ended up finding gold mines on color theory in it.
Like the idea of the secondary colors being a continuum standing in between the primary hues, or the idea of grey being the axis of color with black and white lying on the top and the bottom.

its for Project City of God, whole book has beige pages. Also it feels different to draw on textured background.

>Bugcatcher anon being stuck up
Nah bro, I posted my work, got feedback, and made my drawing better pretty quickly. I'm mad chilling, despite having to deal with that guy getting mad for me asking followup questions. I've
been on this board long enough to know that if you know what you're talking about, an anon can immediately give you a drawing to show you visually on what you don't understand. It used to be standard if that you were confused about something youd get a redline, and a good ol "moar Loomis boyo" or "work on X" and then you'd get some good gains. I already knew that guy was probably couldn't solve muh problems after talking so much without any visuals, so I kept asking questions until I got something useful. Nothing more, nothing less
Y'all need to stop assuming people's character based on random interactions on a 4chan board

… So like this? I tried watching his videos but I kept zoning out on his explanations of the skeleotns so i tried tracing shapes onto his sketches and redrawing them… don’t really like how it looks but should I just do this a lot and then move onto other parts?

Last attempt with dog. I felt that my observation improved a lot, but by tourette hands started to gave me a hard time the more I tried to replicate it while observing. Weirdly, I tried to sketch some things by imagination and my hands followed it a lot better. Is that normal?

I'll try go back to human body now, anyway.

Vilppu’s drawing manual and his renaissance figure drawing course will help you a lot. Do a lot of gesture drawings. Once you’re comfortable with the gesture process — not necessarily “good at it,” just not overwhelmed by it anymore — begin to practice some basic construction on top, being faithful to the shape and flow of the gesture. Don’t spend all the time and energy it takes to render and color a drawing until you can get something halfway decent with lines alone. Keep it up! You show great promise.

Yes, learn the human figure first. There is a lot of overlap between humans and animals, and the fundamentals of gesture, structure, anatomy, shape design, etc. all apply to animals and will transfer more easily. The other thing is that humans are so finely tuned to seeing human faces and bodies that even the slightest fuck up is a killer. With animals, we don’t have as sensitive a detector for imperfections, which ultimately means animals are easier to make look decent than humans are.

And if you’re making fantasy races, they’re almost all gonna be humanoid. Basically monsterfied humans. Harpies are basically a woman with bird feet and wings for arms. A centaur is a human torso jutting from a horse’s body. An orc is basically a big green human. Even if you go as nuts as the monster girl encyclopedia, you’re still using the humanoid pattern for most of it. So you better get good at human figures before you try making modified human figures.

I hear what you’re saying. Supination and pronation reallly fuck with my head though.
>feet
I don’t feel like they’re super complicated, but FUCK feet are weird. I;be always thought they were weird. Don’t like ‘em. Don’t wanna draw ‘em. I feel like I’m gonna need to intentionally develop a foot fetish somehow to motivate myself to study feet to the point where I’ll understand and draw them well.

Day 6 of learning the basics n whatnot. just more of the same old stuff, but with my sketches i tried to be more loose and focus on the "energy" of what i'm drawing, as proko said. animals are really fun to draw. Tomorrow I'll actually continue to course so I can learn some new stuff. I should also look at more videos on simple values. I still don't quite understand how to use them right.

Spend every single day copying your favorite manga. NEVER skip a day. NEVER. Also, read Loomis

What if my favourite manga is roided out monsters having homoerotic fights? That wont help me draw anime girls.

Jeeze how fucking pathetic, using a redline as reference.

I can't stand the stupid fucking cartoons and the "draw a million boxes to draw a mannequin"

>> No.6900049

I've never touched the fun with a pencil book. The rest of his books are God-tier imo. You could spend 10 years on the mannequin at the beginning of figure drawing for all it's worth and still keep learning and getting things out of it

For manga, or any artist, just pay attention to the art. I'm currently studying Obata's Platinum End, and the sweater in the redline came from a serial killer girl in that manga that I was literally just studying this morning. All the shapes came flying out of my pen automatically.

Also, feel free to build your drawing off my redline, I don't mind :) but looking at it again I feel like some parts are skewed

thanks bro, I like to use oval shapes and boxes for the torso parts, and cylinders for arms and legs,
I would recommend a video course like Will Weston's and anatomy books like Morpho and Anatomy for Sculptors
I also try to do at least 90 minutes of gestures/figures every day, even if they are copies of the book
