When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Day 4 of learning the basics n whatnot. Some of the usual stuff i've been practicing with a sprinkle of imagination sketching. Proko wanted people to find some refs, sketch em, then sketch something from imagination with those ref sketches in mind. The imagination stuff are just doodles, but it was really fun to draw stuff that's not just fruit/veggies staying still; especially the gorillas. I love how blocky/chunky their body shape is, was fun to breakdown. Kinda gives me hope that'll i'll be able to break down actual people too in the future. Also got filtered by some stuff; like the glass still life. Had no clue how to tackle it when it came to values, so I just winged it. The shark also kind filtered me, i didn't know how to make it non-derp when I sketched from the ref, so I just went with it, with my imagination stuff. Also my straight lines were pretty crap today. Overall fun day.

I copy, then I redraw from memory. Use construction, of course. Redrawing the thing from memory is actually much more important than copying it. If I could accurately redraw something from memory without copying it, I would just do that all day, but I can't. Kim Jung Gi did that though. He said he would only draw what he saw, never what he was seeing. Redrawing something makes something stick in your head, because it's active recall. When you actively recall information, you can remember it for far longer, and you can use it when drawing from imagination.

Drawing is nothing but shapes, form, and the memory of the shapes and forms. To hell with "theory" it's all just memorization.

Hey frens. Been a while. finished filling this page up though! I’ve been super busy rebuilding an engine every waking moment of the day for about a month, so I was wiped out and had no time for drawing.
And then went on a trip for a few weeks, but I was able to do a little studying. A little Morpho simple forms, some gesture/figure stuff, and working through Hampton’s figure course to then re-tackle Bridgman like that one anon with the absolutely bonkers before/after Bridgman progress pic.

If you mean slim and toned but still shapely, then fine. But skinny? That would take much skill to make appealing. You’d have to have them still well-shaped, but really gestural and with pleasing rhythms to look good. Tableguy does slender legs well imo.

>>6895102
Seems like a perfectly reasonable exercise to me. There’s not really any reason you couldn’t do something similar with a pencil or ink, just put in shadow edges, block in values, or add hatching or textures or however you want to progress it. You don’t need to do anything involving a tablet. The steps you’d take and the process would be a little different, but the basic principle is the same. Watch Glen Vilppu or Karl Gnass or Steve Huston or Brent Eviston do longer gesture/figure drawings. They all start with the quick gesture, then build up in stages, adding layers of detail and depth in phases. Same exact idea.
>>6895117
Yeah, I’ll sometimes fill a page with circles just so I technically drew something for the day. Which is good, because circles are fucking hard. Then I’ll get into it and do more, usually. Sometimes drawing chains or organic forms, intersecting shapes… but those aren’t exactly mindless.
>>6895126
Rib cages are basically egg shaped, hers looks like it might be missing. Look at pictures of people sitting on their heels. I’m sure you can find some of Japanese people sitting like that, at least.

You’ll see that their butt is elevated off the floor by their thighs resting on theirs calves and their butt resting on their heels. A less formal pose, with the feet kind of splayed to the side rather than her sitting on her heels, will be harder. Try taking the pose yourself! That’s often helpful.

I missed you guys. I recognize some anons, and I’m impressed by and proud of your progress. Every one of you that has stuck with drawing while I’ve been MIA, EVERY ONE OF YOU has visibly improved. What do you all think in the rise of digital painting?
I recently learned it, but I decided to go back to line drawing to improve my draftsmanship and line skills. I see a lot of art that relies on colors, filters, and "rendering" to hide the poor solid drawing. It doesn't help that even the non-digital painters over-rely on stabilizers and brushes as a crutch.

It absolutely is actionable advice, you should practice the things you suck at, and I do think the drawing looks sickening. Here's the thing though, I am not a better teacher than the vast dirth of information by professionals out there. I think the thing that would help you the most is simplifying. Start from finding a canon of proportions you like, and constructing figures while paying attention to adhering to them. If you've spent any time on this general you've probably seen the shapes people like to construct out of, if not do some searching and try different ones out. Advice inspired by this video, be warned, it is a bit rambly:

I feel really lost at this point.

I was told I was just mindlessly copying a few weeks back, though my ability to draw has improved...though I currently lack the ability to properly construct bodies (I tried to construct limbs with Cylinders but the cylinders always felt wrong to me). I have a slightly better understanding of 3d space but I still keep wondering if I am symbol drawing or something.

The reason the feet look weird and unfinished is because I was just copying how it looked in the Burne Hogarth book, but I know I should have tried to "fill in the gaps" rather than copy the sketchy unfinished style he gave them.

I was told to do Vlippu and Burt Dodson so I will do that eventually, just I have no idea if I am doing the right thing or not now.

I did draw something from imagination though, without using references, which I'll post shortly.

The arm it had was also constructed without reference, and I basically just put Cylinders together.

The back fin though looks pretty crap, I couldn't really get it to have more form/depth.

I think you might need to build some spacial reasoning. Few things I see at a glance:
Where you have a heavy line contouring her breast, think about the grid of the fibers of her shirt. Her breast is stretching them, and they will follow the curvature of it, before relaxing back to straight up and down. So the outside line of her breast should stay to the outside. Because you have it going to the middle of her torso, it looks unnatural. Same thing happens with the forearm to our left.
Her shorts also look like they're supposed to be squishing her thigh down but on the thigh down. You did a decent job with the leg to our left, but the right one it gradually thickens instead of immediately bulging out like something normally would. There's some more stuff like the elipses on the drink being sloppy and no indication of the material of her shorts having any thickness.

nta buy holy fucking shit anon. People aren't required to give you redlines, and if you act like this who will want to? When you say, "I did try Bridgman and it didn't work for me" that's meaningless and it sounds like an excuse. "Doing Bridgman" means studying proportions, perspectives, and shapes of the figure using Bridgman. Your problem is mainly proportion and perspective

What if you tried to make some changes based on feedback and post it instead?

Looks really good! Is his hand the wrong way though?
I think it's not necessarily about perspective. It's about understanding the surface of the arm reaching forward. If his hand is somewhat raised from the wrist/lower arm, there should be a fold that shows that "upper wrist" indent. I suck at folds myself, but if you study their mechanics (anatomy is kinda important too) you'll know how to place them in these situations.

It's not that bad anon. Ignore the crabs and keep drawing. Perspective and some minor proportion issues. The positioning of the boy is the biggest issue with the piece. Where he's standing in your original he should look like he's right next to her. The perspective is weird there. Consider moving him either diagonally forward and to the right, or backward more.

Day 5 of learning the basics n whatnot. I decided to keep practicing the same stuff today before continuing on to the other vids in the Proko Course; line confidence, values, sketching, etc. Some from ref and some from imagination. Today was really rough though. Everything I did just felt off, you know? My lines and values are usually messy, but they just felt even more crap today. The shoes especially filtered me. I just couldn't get the right shapes no matter how hard I tried, so i kept getting frustrated. The imagination values i did for the cubes were also crap, so I moved on to some orb circle things.
