to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

100 pages into Bridgman. I think my ability to do rendering or shading is starting to lag behind my ability to do linework / construct. Any recommendations for any books / videos / artists to study on this? Think I might take a pause on Bridgman either halfway or 200 pages in or something to learn something of the sort.

Alright FINALLY got to draw more complete human figures. I could only do three today (stupid headache), but I managed to do some at least.

I struggled with making sure the head was the right size, though here the common issue is the head size was too small (though not majorly small), and I did also screw up with the abdominal muscles on the bottom one (didn't adjust it for the perspective and bend) as well as the limbs not looking too great.

I am at this point where I can recognize the errors in what I draw (which are reference based so it makes it quite easy), though still can't fully control my hand my hand feels at least 30% better than it was two weeks ago, but still not great at all.

Though after doing these drawings my confidence is improved considering how poor my initial human figures were a few weeks ago, but still not great and have a long way to go.

At least now, what I draw actually resembles the reference image.

asking for "level" is pointless so instead i will give you crit: both arms look awkward. the bend one looks outright anatomically wrong, the right one is very awkward, nobody runs like that. the area between her neck and booba is lacking a few skeleton bones, check some anatomy book or simply use reference next time of running woman. the shading of face is not good enough, even furry creatures dont have flat faces. for coomer art i would expect way more details / polish for nipples, pussy, booba and belly. putting whole left arm into shade is okay, but you want to have shading there as well to imply form: so you are missing 1 darker value for shades inside shades

I enjoy the concepts it’s teaching and even though I suck I still feel like I derive something from it. But I legitimately get sleepy while reading the instructions and lessons, moreso while actually doing them. You get a gray color when mixing red + blue + yellow, so to desaturate, for example, orange you need to add a little blue to it since orange is red + yellow

Her face feels a bit lopsided. Her jaw is much more square to our right and her eyes look to be different heights and widths. One thing that might help is not drawing your character head on, since then you won't have to worry about symmetry nearly as much. Can someone explain the whole “make sure to always flip your image back and forth” thing to me? Started a few days ago but I genuinely don’t understand why making sure something looks good while flipped is a concern. When using sharp shapes and high contrast the issue becomes making things readable. I believe Mike Mignola (his work from 1989 onwards) is a good artist to learn from given what you're trying to do. Certain areas are a little ambiguous: the highlight on the right leg doesn't entirely read as the outline of the leg and gets overpowered by the separating line in the background. The use of small white marks for highlights works against the "sharpness" you're going for IMO, especially with the end of the right pigtail, kind of rounds things out; economy of shapes is key here I think. Take my advice with a grain of salt. Otherwise, good job.

I started drawing about 3 days ago and I got a little bored of drawing boxes, so I decided to try recreating and studying a piece of art I saw that I liked. This was the result.

I wasn't exactly trying to copy it 1:1 because I knew it was probably out of my skill set, but I tried to get as close as I could. I realized about halfway through that some proportions were off, like the shoulders, neck, face. I should have gone back to fix them before I got too far in, but I opted to just kind of work with what I made instead. I tried to compensate the shittier proportions using new shadows, kinda winged it here and there based on what I felt looked better in my shittier version.
I don't know if I got as much out of this study as I could have, I mean I tried to think about every decision the artist made and why they did what they did, but I'm worried I glossed over too much simply because I don't know any better.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do from here. Continue drawabox for sure but I think I'm going to try and hammer away at anatomy and perspective as much as I can because while I understand them conceptually really well, I'm not dexterous enough to produce them consistently well.

This is such a pain in the ass. Vilppuu shows "yeah don't even worry about anatomy. Look at this rennasaince painting: the arm is just a tube", but that never seems to work out for me in practice. Forearms and lower legs always fuck me up.

Gotta redo the back guy's face. Gonna have to basically do a graphite transfer to clean this up once its laid in.

Day 3 of learning the basics n whatnot. A jumble of simple values, Line confidence and quality. The new thing I was doing today is trying to learn the taper line and having a mindset/purpose to my lines. Also got into sketching stuff by using some line art proko provided in his course. After finishing, my "sketches" they seem more like I was just shittily coping? barely any construction, flow, etc. also I realized it's hard for me to try and get taper lines while also trying to be confident. I focus too much on trying to make each line taper, slowing me down by a lot make lines more wobbly?

I'm not the best at hands either, but I made the biggest gains in my life drawing hands from comic books. Because it's all lines, it makes it much easier to copy and figure out the design of the shapes and forms of each thing. I recommend getting the first volume of Bakuman and copying every hand you see. Just go cover to cover. Bakuman is awesome because it's a manga about drawing manga, so the hands take all kinds of cool poses

how come when i try to re-draw someone else's line art i wind up with an immitation that i'd be proud of if i could actually create it myself, but i can't do anything original with it? it's like i've got a gift for tracing without overlaying one image on the other. when i have to draw from imagination i fall back on childlike symbol drawing, and i've no sense of how to find the middle ground of drawing from reference without outright copying the reference image.

it could be because i'm lazy: symbol drawing is easy because i don't have to think about anatomy, perspective, construction, etc, and 1:1 referencing is easy because you just take one set of lines and re-draw them relative to each other on a new canvas, but when i have to think for myself i shut down.

Yeah, I can see why digital is so appealing. People say you can learn with a cheap pack of HB pencils and a notebook of lined school paper, but it's probably not going to be long before your buying sketchbooks at $15 a pop and whole range of pencils. That need to be replaced and that's just if you only stick with graphite. But you also see people do crazy shit with a cheap mechanical pencil. I wonder if there's a benefit to learning the extreme control required to get a good result with a limited set of tools or if ultimately that's too niche to be of any real use unless you're into ultra-realism.

Doing art by yourself is all about decision making. When you copy works, you copy the solved problems, but you don't learn how to solve, you become a pawell
Either you have to analyze why the artist made those decisions or watch someone draw and explain every decision they're making. The art teachers are here to help
Usually techniques in art are based on how things work in nature so having basic understanding of it could help you. Like lineweight is sometimes based on how light and shadows work in nature

I think the biggest issue would be to confuse yourself with too many advices / exercise and being able too focus because there's too much stuff to follow.

New knowledge is always a plus, of course, but when you think about it, most course are teaching more or less the same thing, it's just worded differently by the teacher. There isn't a course out there that has some forbidden knowledge that will suddenly unlock your potential.

I don't think you can do "too many", but be sure you aren't trying to trade courses with actual drawing, and you're not just using this as a way to fuck around and avoid to draw.

most recent artwork of mine i can only show.
I'm constantly practicing my art by observing other people arts and how are their process in making them.
I do think i'm progressing quite good, but when i see other people art that are advanced and are able to use diverse painting techniques, perspective and anatomy/pose, i feel that i still have to go throught lots of development skills.
Also, I use color pencils in traditional media cus i realized is a very underrated coloring medium that allows very good arts.
Why i'm writing this? Well, because of what this thread is for, i'm seeking for feedback of the anons from here, just to know some tips to improve my art. Currently focusing on anatomy, realism in human body/faces, color techniques and perspective poses practices. Then will later search how to make detailed objects and enviroments just like how artists such as Nakayama Toru does.

I stopped a few months ago but am wanting to start a thread with people drawing and studying along in various courses. You can check for more resources here, but I've already decided to do Vilppu's because I really liked what I did from him before. Picrel was from 3 minute quick sketch homework

A lot of beg books and even some of the perspective books have sections about shades, but it is the Keys to Drawing which has the most complete "guide" about shading and later about rendering: pic related. Framed Perspective volume 2 gets honorable mention.

And no book in particular taught me this messy charcoal / pencil "style", i simply developed as i kept drawing. I had to make my own charcoal and pencil brush back in GIMP which then i later ported into Krita. There is nothing special about the way how i draw these: the more you keep drawing in 1 area the darker it gets (or lighter if i color pick white). If i want gentle gradient i use low pressure, if i want solid line i press harder. If i overdo it i switch to eraser (transparent color) and "draw" until it gets lighter. And i switch between charcoal (large areas), charcoal pencil (medium areas) or pencil (details) as needed.

The fuzzy textures inside the brushes make the drawing look better than it deserves honestly: it hides the brush strokes and invites the human brain to fill in the gaps. The drawing would look way worse if i tried to make it with just hard round brush with opacity.

yes, currently i am slave of the references, hence why i want to free myself and using loomis

I feel like Bridgman is a bit over my skill level. What exactly am I supposed to do here, just try to replicate the teachings? I'm still at the point where I struggle getting proportions right, just get a bevy of posture references and train the measuring exercises until I can at least get the overall shape of the figure right?

>> No.6894656

>>6894650
What you can try to do is just do simple shape sketching for each part of your observation material then overlay them until you have it right most of the time.

I'd say that the correct order would be to try to replicate the human body first and then make them more complex, that way you'll understand why things are one way or another.

Not sure if you were going for this expression but I leaned into that eyeshape. Best advise I can give right now for you is try not to make sketchy lines(unless it's a deliberate aesthetic choice, this sometimes works for hair but not for things like shoulders), draw slow and try to make deliberate strokes, it's also fine to have blurry values but you need more confident hard shapes to make it more readable. For the nose I also would recommend using values to imply the shape instead of lines, similar to the shading under the eye. Goodluck

overall shapes are looking good but I think youre overdoing it with the chickenscratch guidelines, try to challenge yourself and draw 1 or 2 confident lines, go slower if you feel the line doesn't go where you want to. Also try timed figure drawing, it'll train your mind to copy and create shortcuts when constructing the human body in different poses

I feel at least for lips the rendering in Bridgman I should just ignore. Bottom right I did the linework and then just looked away from the book while rendering and I feel like I actually emphasized the forms I wanted to, where as when I try to replicate the rendering as he's done it turns into a flat illegible mess.

Ah..yet another masterpiece. You know? that charcoal brush is not doing you any favors. In fact, I'd argue its completely detrimental for you. Your prowess is already precarious enough and by using a brush that evokes 'rustic' all you are doing is sinking further down into the bottomless /beg/pit you are in.

Don't get me wrong Pawell, I am actually a big fan of yours and do follow your evolution closely. I understand you may choose not to believe this and simple retort with a heartfelt 'its PYW, not MY work crab!! >:C!!' and that would be ok, if you feel like that's a suitable response.

I still won't post it simply because I want this faceless antagonism to be an instrumental part of your evolution, every other hypocritical crab here will just praise you or play nice and kind, but secretly you know well they don't care. I do.

I hope you like this collage I've made. Keep it up.
