The big issue with the American animation industry is, seemingly, lack of job security. Rather than a studio hiring you and having a constant stream of projects to keep you consistently employed, most animators' contracts end when a show ends, essentially losing their job. Some even have their contract end per season of the show.

You can imagine how stressful it is living in fucking Hollywood, paying their shy-high shit rent prices, all while trying to find the next job as quickly as possible.
I also think it's just a bit of a slap to the face that animators don't get any residuals for their shows, but the shit head Hollywood actors DO for being a voice actor in an animated series - I imagine animators must be seething at the strikes right now, especially if it's effecting their job right now.

Anyway, that's one leg up japan has on American animation; I believe if you work at a studio there, you don't need to worry about your contract ending... you just need to worry about affording that cup of noodles and whether you can afford rent, all while having your boss scream at you for not finishing your incredibly tight deadline.

I had one friend who worked in animation, she went to art school for 3 yrs with scholarships (graduated early) made 60k a year out of school doing backgrounds for Disney kids cartoons. She said it was ok but most of her coworkers were really old, in their 40s and there were a lot of office politics. James Gurney. I literally learned to paint watercolor and gouache almost intuitively just by watching his stuff on youtube. Also, some of his videos literally made me cry.

David Finch. His art doesn't really appeal to me, but hiis advice is solid. His lives copyng Frazetta and Claire Wendling are probably the videos I've watched the most times on YT.

Chris Legaspi. Hands down the best head drawing/portrait videos I've ever seen, including payed content. I challenge anyone here to do the exercises on his "Skills that Pay the Bills" series and not improve INSTANTLY. Also, the sheer amount of content he puts up is amazing. Hundreds of hours of great classes and demos.

I watch a lot of Sinix and MDJ because I like their art, but not necessarily every advice they give clicks with me.

I can see that, some of the stuff they explain requires you to watch some of their older videos to be able to soak in the information fully, and even then it feels someone else could've explained it better. Like the video on tempo from Sinix, one guy in the comments section explained the idea and I immediately understood what he was going about, also I dislike when they show a demo on x400 speed, I understand why they do it but if you're teaching about rendering I'd like to see the actual brush strokes being placed in real time or something close to it.

I watched this course as well, and it's crap indeed. NMA has a lot of these "filler" courses intended to convince newbies that their subscription is a good deal. But his stuff on portraits and color are really amazing. I think that the he's so good at it because many other artists who teach do not necessarily work a lot with portraits, while for Chris, who's a poster artist, portaits are his bread and butter.

siya oum has some of the prettiest linework i've ever seen.

there's also the mangaka that occasionally stream their work, or the ones that give some insight into their work ethic that has led to their success. i think all of the ones i've seen that are pretty successful start with rough sketches on paper for their basic storyboard and most of them have a literal library of references and resources, from magazines about fashion, to nature, to history. i imagine all of them have invested thousands of dollars into having a shitload of visual references on hand.

i've also seen videos of a couple of moderately successful oil painters, one based out of norway i think that does quick paints within the span of an hour of various parts of the city for his clients and will then do a detailed oil once his clients settle on a desirable angle. another guy literally paints photographs but does it to a larger scale than the photo taken and does it to almost lifelike accuracy. while he's essentially a copy machine he has shown off some great brush techniques to achieve a high level of detail in his paintings that the average person looks at and scratches their head wondering how it might've been done. he also tries to sell his brushes every video. forgot his name.

most of the big ones are all about clickbait and empty generic advice which is kinda annoying, i find way more value in looking for what i need and scrolling through an enormous quantity of videos until i find it

I use to watch KNKL's stuff back when he made videos more regularly. I still go back and watch some of his older content. He did LoL splash art like 10 years ago. Reading about how it's made now vs then makes it seem like the strategy has changed drastically. He even talked about how it felt less and less like he was doing 'real' art.

Some time ago it was Ethan Becker, 'cause his teaching of not holding on to formulas from other artists was pretty great, and helps me to learn and develop my own style to this day. But as soon as he was showing his faggotry more (more or less after the Project City thing was announced), i decided to not see his shit anymore. All valid points. Even with the most evidential 'proof' reddit has to offer, it still leaves just as much equal chance of 'itsamiizora' as a female expressing interest in transitioning to male.
