When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Is close enough good enough? I don’t know, drawing too tightly will leave no space for the painting to speak right?
I advised someone to get his proportion straight if he wants to paint properly but seeing him paint without a care of accurate results made me think, am I lingering too much in the drawing stage?
The painting itself should be capable of expressing everything and sustain itself just like good lineart can be art even without any kind of shading or color. The painting speaks for itself.
Well what if the painting spills a lot of bullshit? The drawing should anchor it right?
However if you work up the drawing too much you have little to no space left to actually develop the piece in painting, or is it?
I don’t bother too much with the drawing but many painting mistakes are also drawing ones, especially when it comes to edges.
What I mean is defining everything early on within the drawing stage may stifle you own efforts, the scaffolding is too good, you rely on it too much rather than facing values, hues and saturation head on.
Should drawing be a crutch or is it the launching stage to developing paintings?
I guess the answer depends on when you put your pen down and go for a walk

Am pretty proud of the arm I drew, though I botched the hand on the left really bad so I decided to just move onto doing the arm as I got bored of it.

It is VERY close to the original picture, not quite as detailed of course and there are some scale issues here and there but it's virtually spot on despite that.

The bottom left was just a random thing I drew when drawing ellipses...I have a good idea of how ellipses relate to things now so I have a limited object construction ability.

Dude. You do NOT have to be a master draftsman OR painter to create a good piece of art. Like someone said, it just has to look good. That comes from the gut. Like I said before in another thread, I knew by the age of 7 or 8 that I was gonna be a decent artist. Sometimes people have to accept, it's not in me. It could be dormant, but from what I see, you are having trouble CREATING art. You don't even finish your work probably.
You don't have to be a dope draftsman. Hell, I'm not. You don't have to be a dope painter. I not that good at that either. You just have to come from a certain place. You know if you got it. Most don't and never will.

ok i recently decided to take drawing seriously after years of 3/4 waist up anime characters with no construction. my question is am i going about this right, i use morphos simplified forms book for help but i can't tell if im making the right shapes, should i erase and redraw, or what. i really want to learn how to properly construct with forms. left is a trace of the picture. also i didnt draw her hands or feet because im too stupid to learn those right now, mostly im trying to figure out legs but im struggling.

if anyone has any sort of advice or tips i would appreciate it

master copies, master copies, master copies

Drawing from real life is a surefire way to a land in a dumpster fire. Even realistic painters from the 1800's would make you copy Bargue and Julien, before moving onto plaster casts of STATUES, and then finally the life drawing model as the last stage. They went through years of nothing but copying from other artwork.

You should just get an anime and copy that frame by frame, along with copying Morpho for the realistic anatomy. When you do a study, redraw it from memory, so you get an easy transition to drawing from imagination

>> No.6888361

unironically here are some good options

Basics (START HERE), learning to draw and draft well, intro to fundamentals:
Proko basics (newer one still in progress, not expensive. Pretty well done)
Eviston art and science of drawing (Very solid, do the homework and your drafting skill will improve)

Perspective (DON'T SKIP PERSPECTIVE):
Marshalls 1994 video course (Good introduction, do the homework)

Figure:
Eviston or Proko's figure drawing first (You can even begin with the youtube content)
**Once you have some introduction and figure drawing under your belt, go to Vilppu or Hampton. Anatomy can come way later and you can learn anatomy as you go.

Want to learn digital painting? (after you get intro'd to the fundamentals):
CTRL PAINT Basics (Short and helpful)
Hardy Digital Painting Fundamentals
John Sweeney - Digital Illustration Theory and Process
Christophe Young's digital painting workshops (helped me breakthrough in understanding blending in photoshop)

Motivation?:
Kalen Chock - How I became an artist (free on his gumroad)

Recommended reading for a zoomer to get their shit together way ahead of their peers:
Getting things Done by David Allen
Someday is Today by Matthew Dicks
War of Art by Stephen Pressfield

>> No.6888368

So I dunno, when I tried drawing in the past I struggled to really get my hands to do what I wanted, but after studying references for two weeks and doing them daily, I find that my ability to get my hands to do what I want has improved...still not great, but I can feel my grasp of things improving gradually over time.

Is this maybe the main thing many beginners should do? Just draw what they see until they get the hang of it, and then do the more complicated stuff? I just find that I can draw what I want better (and have a better sense of proportion and all that) after two weeks which I am still quite amazed by, even if I am still nowhere near close to great just yet.

Is this a brain rewiring itself sorta thing if someone starts drawing when they are older?

Any former /depressed/ bros here? Can't tell if I don't practice drawing because I'm (officially diagnosed) depressed or just don't want to. I have no desire to do anything else I like but it's hard to tell if there's a difference between that and this because I feel like I want to do it but get sad every time I open a sketchbook. I don't get my meds for another week or two

Me personally I just take long breaks from drawing out of laziness. When I get back into it I really get back into it and always finish my pieces even if they don't always turn out great.

Basically I have trouble starting pieces but I don't have any trouble actually finishing them

Im looking to get anti depressants, Im tired of just dealing with this. Never took any meds in my life for it and just rolled with it. but its gotten to the point that i can't take it anymore. Do i need a prescription?

>>Do i need a prescription?
yeah. the prescribed shit is what really works, but the pills usually have heavy side effects. the one i took made me lose a shit ton of weight, so I wasn't depressed, but I was weak as shit.

What's wrong with draw a box? I don't like it but it does explicitly tell you that it isn't fun when you start it. Is there something better?

you can theoretically grind fundies for draftsmanship but you will probably just hate drawing if you do that. Just draw what you want to draw, get into a habit, maybe think about "what could I have done better?" in a non-judgmental way

day 90
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to draw. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for drawing backgrounds at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate.

I was supposed to draw environments for the last 10 days but I was already doing that for the past few days anyway

It really depends. My doctor is pretty focused on what portions of my brain are causing me trouble (OCD, sad center lol) and is prescribing meds based on that. He's even said that if he overdoses me I'll end up a zombie until it's fixed. The goal is to hit a mid ground where I'm comfortable being alive with myself. If you can find a doctor that's honest with you I think that's best. Sorry if this is kinda incoherent I'm trying to run out of my booze stock since it doesn't mix with ssris

Yes, Selegiline and Modafinil/exercise and cold showers got me out of it. Depression is partly an illusion, any of the rationalizatiojns you give yourself for the way you feel will literally stop meaning anything once you get up and rolling
