Layer tyranny at its finest. All that naming, labeling, organization and rigid hierarchical thinking for stiff and subpar results. What an over complicated clusterfuck in aid of nothing. This is digital neuroticism and fear of DeSTruCTiVe EDiTs. Instead of just learning how to paint it right the first time, you're now buried in sliders, buttons, masks, selections, boundary adjustments, groups, links, and worrying about if one layer is going to conflict with another, or whether or not you're using the right layer with an eraser selected just to make the shadows. Jesus fucking Christ, do some speed paintings and explorations on one or two layers for a while and learn to hit the target the first time. You won't die from lack of layer control.

create a layer group on top of the base silhouette and clip that instead of keeping the selection in place, helps me notice small errors better

also set your lineart as a reference layer and check the option for not crossing boundaries for your brush. saves you so much time.

It's also so much slower than just taking advantage of blending modes and taking into consideration how "coldly" or "warmly" you want a character to be lit, especially for a drawing that simple. It's making a process that isn't that horrible more complicated than it needs to be.
Why even make that many render layers when each detail's flat color isn't its own layer?

oh yah i made this a while ago for my friend that doesn't really get layer stuff. i still don't think it's a bad method but i stopped bothering with all of this because it took forever and would lead to too clean of a look when i wanna do more schizo looking painterly stuff. been having a lot more fun recently just painting with an opacity brush on maybe like 3 or 4 layers and using the eyedropper to color pic whatever color mixes come from that. feels more natural

Western animation has a tendency to focus on esoteric elements and parrot them regardless of context, like extreme poses and clear silhouettes. What if we want to show a character who is fearfully protecting the box, would they still be holding it with arms confidently outstretched? What if we want to shoot a character from a front angle, where we wouldn't even see their arms in silhouette? Even though these ideas are sound, they cannot and should not be applied as some sort of universal hard and fast rule.
It's best to consider these things as "style guides", which is what they are, rather than tutorials. You would want to pose like that if you were to maintain the loud and obnoxious tone of something like Spongebob.

As much as I like downloading art books from EH, there is already too much mission creep on that site. More random collections like this is just going to turn users against it and possibly ban it outright.

beg here, how does he make the linework/inking look so clean here? Is that just hard round with size and opacity jitter or is there more to it?
I've been trying but I find it hard to replicate the line weight without it starting to look grimy especially when I try to create the thick corners along overlaps or when going back over a line to make it darker/thicker
