Pay attention to the GIFs in the first two or three posts. Don't understand some of the terms? Google them. We encode as a bot countermeasure.
Some of the links may have multiple layers - like ogres or onions. You might have to "peel" them more than once to get to the good part.

Yeah, I like the more hatching-oriented style, as it makes easier to get a grasp on how to render things in ink or for wood/linocut. De Wit also has quite a wealth of subjects beyond just human figures, and has full compositions to study, unlike Bargue.
Either way, get both yall.

>> No.6885609

Well, I mean, if you studied the first two series of plates from Bargue, you shouldn't have issues drawing trees & flowers. The human figure is a rather complete way to exercice drawing/painting skills

> Yeah, I like the more hatching-oriented style, as it makes easier to get a grasp on how to render things in ink
Agreed. There is actually plenty of hatching on Bargue though, but it's very subtle and secondary (https://bargueplate.supply/products/bargue-plate-1-27-leg-of-germanicus-front-view).).

There are reasons for it, mainly, that students get distracted with cute hatchings, but don't develop a good sense of value, and thus of form/light. I was looking at a few drawings from late 1800s IIRC on https://www.museabrugge.be/, and some of them definitely had those issues.

>Either way, get both yall.
Nah, just get one and work it thoroughly, then get another one. There are a few good books, it's tempting to collect them all, but this distracts from actually working through them.

>Well, I mean, if you studied the first two series of plates from Bargue, you shouldn't have issues drawing trees & flowers. The human figure is a rather complete way to exercice drawing/painting skills
Proko Kangaroo .jpg

On a more serious note, De Wit has pictures showing clothed figures, figures in action, and animal drawings with some fairly decent implication of the underlying anatomy. Some of the animal drawings are... Questionable though. They were clearly made from taxidermies, and definitely not the best ones known to man.

>Nah, just get one and work it thoroughly, then get another one. There are a few good books, it's tempting to collect them all, but this distracts from actually working through them.
Bargue is conductive for this, being meaningfully structured as a single cohesive course. De Wit isn't. There are quite significant gaps in difficulty within the material. You'd have to be at a fairly advanced level to begin with to work through the entirety of it efficiently, and even then it would at least necessitate jumping back and forth through the book. For example, while Bargue has early plates that have simple shadows, De Wit has complex and nuanced gradations of tone throughout, from some of the earliest pages.

For anyone interested in working through De Wit, I'd recommend doing at least some of the first Bargues first, and reading up on the anatomy that's illustrated, but not explained, early on in the book. I'd also recommend at least some perspective knowledge before moving into the full-body nudes - it would be possible to copy these without understanding, but you'd certainly learn more by knowing some theory. I personally stopped before moving to the full-body nudes and have been working through Bridgman to gap my understanding of what I was trying to draw.

I was implicitly talking about drawing from references. Also note that Proko, up until recently, never trained drawing from imagination/memory, so it's perfectly *normal* that he sucked at it.

I think people don't realize how lucky we are to be able to google "lion" and get thousands of relevant pictures, of real lions...

> For example, while Bargue has early plates that have simple shadows
It's essentially true, but we can nitpick: each section covers essentially a body part, and each section starts from simple drawings to more complex. For instance, you can have a sophisticated hand drawing followed by a very simple leg. But as you go into the plates, the most simplified ones disappear.

But overall, your point is correct: De Wit should be harder to study for most beginners. In particular, the students will have to interpret him, either with ink of the pencil, while they can simply copy Bargue plates.

Nevertheless, if you want to practice without buying the books, there are plenty of images around for you to copy. If one day you wake up realizing you've spent more than idk 30h doing this, maybe consider buying the book, cause that's likely to be worth the price.

Yes but it's fucking impossible to scan because of how the book is bound. It's the same story with all of her artbooks. You have to take the book apart to scan it. The best "scan" I found was just a dozen shitty not completely flat scans of the book (pic related) but it was enough to convince me to buy it. If you look on Japanese sites, you should be able to find it for under $30 after shipping very easily. I recommend it if you like watercolor, fashion, highly detailed art, or just pretty girls.

Do you have the book or not? If it is not the case, thank you for your suggestions. I'll keep that in mind.

Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for someone who was able to download it and it's willing to share it.

Keep chasing away those who spend their time to help you while asking for nothing in return but 101 respect, see how far you guys go in life.
