In this photo by Anton Belovodchenko I've labeled some edges, including a third one called lost. That just means it's hard to tell where the boundary between objects (in this case the arm and the background) begins and ends.
That said, I think the previous advice you were given oversimplifies the problem. Here's a video explaining a few different painting techniques Christopher young. He uses multiple custom brushes, but the same principals can be used with your basic round, soft, and gaussian brushes.

This is what is normally looks like if I take my sweet time, use a fresh paper and a light-box for the final lines, adjust the levels in krita after scanning, etc. Sucks all the joy out of the process and the end result still feels stiff.

In my opinion it's related to the shoulder movement. Like when you scratch your head, you naturally use more your elbow/forearm to reach for it, with the upper arm facing mostly forward. There's no shame in drawing without references. They're very useful when you're fixing up details and errors and whatnot in your art. That being said, if you do want to draw without using references what I like to do when I doodle is getting into the habit of drawing 'loosey-goosey', as in drawing without much planning by allowing yourself to be sporadic with the subject until you get something more concrete, if that makes sense.
Whenever I draw in MS Paint, I always start out with drawing the bangs and the head and then however I end up drawing the neck and shoulders, I follow through with some sort of pose that would make sense for that head position. also that kind of head shape with no jawbone on top of the low placed large eyes results on your faces looking too wide
lastly, when doing the cloth wrinkles, try to hint at the shapes they form at a just few select directions like from the armpit to the elbow (tension points) and avoid drawing lines that don't go anywhere like those on the left sleeve. just like with the eyes, focus on how the lines flow
