SAI2fag here, elaborate, because I dont understand what you mean.

If you mean that vector lines dont move when you select them with the selection tool, that's because vector lines work differently than your regular raster layers and, as such, are not affected by the selection tool at all.

If you want to select vector lines in order to move them you have a few ways, but I'd like you to elaborate first just so I dont infodump you an advice it may not be what you're looking for.

This recent video is a decent overview of the more common types of brushes.

Good brushes have multiple uses, especially at different sizes.

Lixin demonstrates this well too. you can get pretty convincing textures quite easily.

this video is good too.

Wootha has a free brush course on artstation learning. For general digital painting videos I like Craig Mullins, Anthony Jones, Jonathan Hardesty and Jon Neimeister (his course is on proko, the free youtube stuff is good too).

Anyone have a quickstart guide to becoming a decently earning NSFW patreon artist? For me, something around $300-$400 a month is my goal within a few months.
$5 all-access and a $15 limited option that gives a fast, simple bust sketch for at least a few months: would this work?

How much content would I need to be creating? Other than twitter, how do I shill my stuff - uploading to boorus and r34 sites?

If you're talented you could probably just start drawing and they may come

If not, you want to stick to a niche, either have an OC (better if it's for an existing franchise, say Pokémon) you exclusively draw

Or pick a very specific thing and draw exclusively that
There's a guy here who posts video game characters wrestling eachother l, he's not amazing at art and supposedly gets $200 a pic, although they are usually 3 or 4 panels with 2 or 3 people interacting

Pls no bully but, how do you color a digital painting?
I had the standard workflow for cel shading and shit with lineart, base, multiply, overlay bla bla. But now I'm getting into more serious shit, wanna paint, ditch the lineart etc. My issue is I'm literally too stupid to coprehend color? I really prefer doing greyscale first because I do way better if I go GS>Color but my issue is coverting it to actual color.
I'd like to try and avoid gradient maps as they are a bit tehnical and it's a hassle trying to get a range I want and it quite frankly, isn't very fun. So what is the best way, or at least a simple way to retain my values from greyscale and convert them into nice color without it looking completely washed out or losing the value ranges I established?

i used to struggle so much with rendering but it wasnt until i started oil painting that something clicked in my head
>If you havent already, learn how to render with greyscale. Its easier to learn and you need to understand value anyway if you want to paint
>Use the zorn palette or color pick from a photo (pic related is a good one to do that with). Using limited palettes can help you better understand color relationships.
>irl shadows tend to have a blueish hue
>if youre trying to paint from life or from a photo, squinting your eyes helps
>for me, its easier to start with my core shadow and then add lights
i dont hardly use multiply/overlay anymore, usually i do my shadows/highlights in a normal clipping layer or just draw directly on my base with color mixing turned on

Im definitly not a pro so take all this with a grain of salt, this is just what helped me

not considering inherent art style that everyone has depending on what they are most comfortable drawing, art styles can be learned and are 90% influenced by the art you surround yourself with and decide to study

the biggest learning curve from trad to digital is the loss of tactile sensation with the medium itself- you have to get accustomed to adjusting your approach depending on the tablet, drawing program, brush, etc. but otherwise if you are already skilled with pen and paper, you will be able to catch up to your current level once you can get used to this

social media- it's really the only way nowadays to connect with people in art if you are not already surrounding yourself with those types of people in person. especially for making connections to people working within industries, it is important to at least have some social media presence so that people can find you easily. the only other way i can think of is maybe attending some job fairs or industry conventions and try to connect with some attendees there

most of the artfags drew like shit for years for fun and eventually started learning and studying properly, then they tell everyone else to not waste their time like them.
the process is different because you just draw a character you like (poorly) and then you want to draw it better so you look up tutorials vs the analysis paralysis people starting from 0 experience.

>art styles can be learned and are 90% influenced by the art you surround yourself with and decide to study
I'm still Sonichu comics tier when it comes to drawing skills.
What's the best way for someone to 'modify' their drawing style or 'nudge' said drawing style into a desired style? I've read that select digital brushes make a huge impact but I feel that is kind of "cheating" if custom brushes are a necessity to a certain style.

>> No.6871345

"master studies" of the artists you like. Pick 2-3 artists you like the style of (for example lineart, anatomy, or the way they paint) and do a study (try to replicate the thing entirely) every day.
If they have any watch their process videos
Style usually isn't based on brushes, maybe more recognizable sometimes, but not based on. Still need that drawing skill to draw things in that particular, unique way.
Artstyle comes with time tho, it's your personal way of simplification, seen through your eyes and your personal decisions what to add/keep/change in any given work. Honestly you don't need to sweat too much, grind those skills and do the amster studies and your style will come pretty fast

>> No.6871371

>>6871298
study the shit out of an art style similar to what you're aiming for. start with dedicated studies where you try to break down all aspects of that art style and what makes it look the way it does, then replicate art made with that style until you can recreate the methods without a reference. try doing it yourself and see what you've been able to commit to memory, then take those drawings and compare to references again and figure out what was lacking. repeat process until it becomes muscle memory- can be applied to any aspect of an art style

To anyone that uses Krita, what are the best settings/brushes/options i can set to if i wanted to partially mimick the style of Carlos Ezquerra?
Because i hate how flat my drawings usually are and i want to make the brush strokes seem more dynamic and the color shading/blending a bit more interesting.
Or any other tips using Krita is nice, i just mentioned Ezquerra because i think his style is charming.
And chances are some stuff is less about the tools and more about the skill, so maybe i should look into artists streaming/recording themselves using Krita and how they do it.

7 months or so from complete beg to being able to draw a decent goblin. that's when I see clear improvement and know that it wasn't a waste of time. The weird thing is the improve is not really gradual. That 7 months I grinded basics. Simple shapes/ values and forms/ gesture drawing/ head and body construction etc... After basics practice for 2 to 3 hours I do portrait studies using real photos. I can somewhat get likeness using the construction method. At night before sleep I try imagination drawing. This is the time when I suffer. I almost always cry myself to sleep because my drawing from imagination looks like literal shit.

Then at the end of that 7 months I don't know what happen. It feels like all the practice I did finally "clicks" It's like my brain finally finish processing all that information. I guess it's what most pros call "breaking the wall".

If you really want I have a zip of from an Equine drawing workshop. Idk how much it'll help you without the actual video portion tho. Heres a few points I remember that were important: Horses and zebras are closer in relation to predators like wolves than cattle - their anatomy makes more sense then, they also have 3 teeth type including canines. Equines are built to run with their spine, long legs, MASSIVE chests that have massive lungs and noses that work like bellows when they run. Don't forget important landmarks - the hole above the eyes, they have no collar bone so that whole area is mainly muscle, and the weird circle of fur where their back lags connect to the hips - it's there for draining away moisture from their backs (horses can get rain rot). Has anyone tried working with different color sliders like RGB HSB or LAB?
Do you think any of them can benefit you in a specific way in your painting process? Did something improve or click for you that feels more natural? I have used the default color picker for a few years now and though I am already familiar with it and know the basic stuff I am curious if there's an actual benefit to switch to another one, right now I'm testing LAB though I'm still trying to figure it out, it's kind of neat how it treats lightness slider as hue shifting for some colors. HSB and RGB seem pretty intuitive too.

Also I wish I could like the triangular color picker but the way it behaves from light to dark in full saturation seems to have a different behavior than your basic color square, is there any reason people like it more?

I tried the meme exercise from Sinix video on "tempo", it's basically trying to fine tune yourself into your better intuition side, for me it's something akin to drawing with the wrong point of the pencil lead where your lines look shitty and the paper is dented from them, you adjust so the edge so it's softer and you feel comfortable doing them while removing that awkward feeling, obviously there's more to that than your pencil, sometimes is something more mental, but you need to figure out some of these external and internal elements if you already haven't, so you are on your better form to do your drawings.

For me it's not a drag because I naturally tend to do this or spend some time fucking around the canvas with my lines, checking if my hand grip feels okay, if not I fix it a bit more or switch to my second one that makes me more loose then switch back if I need to, I also test if my pen sensitivity is working as intended or if the driver shat the bed again randomly, then I do these exploratory lines without thinking much and only aimig for good shapes, in a good day I know what they look like or my hand does before I even become conscious of them, in a bad day it may take longer to fine tune so my hand pulls them off, if all of this shit makes no sense to you just watch the video, there's another one from Proko with this guy that does something similar, I think it's well worth it.

HSV/HSB, RGB and Lab give different answers to different problems.

I want more yellow. RGB: lower B (or increase both R and G).
I want more saturation. HSV: increase S.
I want my color to be more cold, with the same values. Lab: decrease b.

I suggest to select colors with HSV, because it is more intuitive. Then you can adjust the colors with other sliders, according to your specific problems. You can start with Lab too, but I would not start with RGB.

---

You have said that you are trying to figure out Lab. It's easy.

L - Controls the value. In Lab, value depends ONLY on this, which is why it's a color slider so powerful.
a - Controls the tint (green/magenta).
b - Controls the temperature (blue/yellow).

Let's compare Lab with HSV.

H - Controls hue, which has an intrinsic value tied to it.
S - Controls saturation. Higher saturation, lower value.
V - Controls value. Higher (input)value, hihger (output)value.

---

A last little unimportant thing. In Lab 50% grey is not equal to HSV 50% grey.

---

I think that the triangle is supposed to show you the value you are using, but it fails on that because the triangle shape it's supposed to change together with the hue. Not truly better than a square color picker, but it kinda let's you know what your value could be. I'm fine with the square color picker

I think you need to remove all posts that lead to your shadowban and wait a few days. If you post even slightly nsfw stuff you need to mark your account as potentially sensitive in the settings.
Dont use too many hashtags and if you post something write something in the description. Dont use hashtags alone and use 2 at most.
Dont post too much.
When I started uploading my stuff to twitter I did so only using a lot of hashtags and I uploaded stuff from multiple months at once plus I didnt mark my account as potentially sensitive while uploading lewd stuff.

your problem comes from the fact you can't copy something accurately.

I recommend doing a gesture drawing, then dragging your drawing over the reference. If it's off, do it again. Do it again and again and again. After drawing it 10x, you'll be significantly better. Move onto the next reference

You don't need to get it 1:1, but this is a process to get iterative improvement. The reference is your only judge of quality, at this point, because you don't have enough knowledge to exaggerate or caricature anything correctly.

This type of thing is probably most effective with copying drawings, not photos. Get a Yoh Yoshinari drawing and do this process on it.

picrel are my latest gestures and construction attempts. I've been jumping around from books to videos to references and copy studies. I just don't know where to go or who I should follow. everyone has some sort of direction they suggest going towards and I want to do it the right way before I try drawing characters. I'll post some older work when I tried anime stuff next

>>6888890
so in picrel:
top left: I drew the volumes directly on top of the image. still fucked up that leg
top right: my attempt at gesture drawing thinking I knew what I was doing
bottom left: gesture/construction drawing where I kept moving my work over onto the ref to make sure I was doing it right. still don't know what I'm doing with gesture
bottom right: I'm going through Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention book while also watching his YouTube instructional vids. I just copied what I saw, but when I try gestures on my own, I just can't feel the form or line placement to make it not look shit

>>6888914
yeah, that's another thing: the order of what you should learn and how to implement it all to make something decent. I've seen a ton of different directions to go in this regard. I'll try your suggestion, though, thanks.

>I'm just doing the same mistakes over and over
If you can spot them in the very moment they happen, then it's time to find an immediate alternative to the problem. If you're just shading randomly and not visualizing what exactly the pencil stroke is doing to your value structure or if it corresponds to the plane/faces of the form you're describing then you're not engaged enough in the process.
Watch an artist doing it, see the pencil stroke and how he does it, even if you have to replay it many times, it can also be that you're not controlling the pressure of your pencil, or it's simply you not understanding the concept enough, which can either be solved by looking at an example or just practicing it enough that you develop an intuition for it.
I'm talking from experience, I used to do that because I just took for granted that I could stumble around my shading until it came together because I understood the general idea based on the final result, the problem is I wasn't very conscious of every step I was taking to get there so my stuff looked sloppy and sometimes went off the rails.
Try this, and watch every step as closely as you can.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3MsfZ-wjzA&ab_channel=BrentEviston
And remember that the real understanding is translating the concept in any medium, just aping shit won't get you anywhere so do studies or paintings/sketches of your own applying these concepts, that's how you know you understood, this applies to other fundamentals as well.

You gotta start somewhere, think about what would you like to see in your own work, as a mental image, when you think about a beautiful piece that conveys color, value, or sadness, or greatness, or draftsmanship, what comes to mind? You have to decide what kind of message you want to tell and what really suits that voice the best, you probably can name plenty of artists, but again just stick to the ones that come to mind first, then inspect their work and do some simple studies on a relatively small canvas, trying to capture the general brushwork and technique based on what your observation skills fixate the most on (you can even make it easier by just cropping a specific area of a painting and trying to get as close as you can with your current brushes), then you can apply it freely to whatever you want to do and test if it can stand on its own, sometimes a brush that is closer to the artists medium is going to be necessary but don't let that stop you from starting.

I forgot to mention, the idea here is to learn from them, not to become their impersonator, just take what you like from the many artist that you like and then add some of your own voice and taste and let it transpire over your fundamentals/inspirations/studies.
Also sometimes the inspiration will come from their storytelling, composition, themes or general knowledge about their subject that its depicted in a educated way that goes beyond the fundamentals which shows more about their character than just the piece itself, so it's good to keep in mind all this isn't always so literal and opens up the options to careful observation and investigation (you may even want to learn about the artists themselves), and in some cases, to take inspiration from other forms of art, like music and the like adds another layer to your influences and way of approaching painting.

Depends on what you want to learn to draw but divide your time, pick a subject you want to draw and work on making quick thumbnails. Use references, of real photos/ and maybe a few of artists you enjoy. Spend 30 minutes doing copies and studies and the other 30 minutes just drawing from memory and drawing original things based off your visual library. If you're spending all your time drawing things for studies it'll end up like work and you wont stick to it. Make sure to draw what you want during your freestyle segment

Exercises include, timed figure drawing, life drawing, blind contour, value studies, photo realism studies, perspective, anatomy aka breaking the body down into shapes which are proportionally/anatomically correct. This goes for backgrounds, values, etc but just pick one thing at a time. Learn how to draw the lines you imagine in your head exactly, start with simple things, if you can't make a circle or shape look the way you want then start there

I don't think that's something you'd want to discuss on here. Photo bashing used to be a really prominent topic and it would constantly circle around the same debates; as you already hint at with keywords such as cheating/crutch vs. people arguing for efficiency or using all the tools at your disposal if you're smart etc.

The truth of the matter is that it may be required professionally, so it's a good skill to have (if you aimed at becoming a full-time concept artist somewhere). And if you lack any understanding for painting, colors, composition, then it is very difficult or sheer impossible to pull off convincingly, without the result looking like dog water. It's the same as using 3D software for difficult poses or geometry from challenging angles. Why wouldn't you use 3D software and just paint over a screenshot? If you can do it well, do it. But from my experience, you can't bypass the required fundamentals necessary. Good bashing incorporates the photos well, the artists often know exactly where and what color to pick to blend the realistic materials with the rest of the painting. It's mainly a technique used to dish out quick ideas and concepts at a fast pace.

The way you frame your question.. I'm not sure what to think. You're probably not experienced but you're curious. Who cares if it's a bitch move? Just do it and see how convincing the final result looks. Disregard the crabs.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but what's the name of that artist who drew futuristic shiny chrome/metallic humanoids, kinda like pic related?

You have to have fun and study.

Not (A) have fun without studying.
Not (B) study without having fun.

Different camps of people will tell you (A) or (B) is the mistake they made, and you should "have fun" or "study" but you need to do both. You need to get the mileage but remember to do something productive, or you'll be doing ten years of 2D tumblr nose with no progress to show for all that fun, or years of amazing boxes from all angles but being incapable of drawing an actual character.

Yeah. But don't hike without a map.

>> No.6902047

Drawing is like hiking through a flat field that spans off into the distance every which way you look. You'll probably end up somewhere if you just walk any which direction, so long as you actually take the journey of a thousand steps.

Shouldn't it be /ac/ then? what is the "i" here?

Admittedly, I've never read Loomis or any other artbook. A lot of my learning came from asking others for help (redlining) and trial and error. If you have other people to draw with you, whether they're online or in real life, then you'll make leaps and bounds in progress. They can be better or worse than you, but having other people to bounce ideas, WIPs, and whatnot off of I think helps aid in the learning process way more than just reading and copying books. Just talking to another artist about how and why they do certain things can shed light on things that you didn't even realize you needed help with, I've come to find!

If you ask me you should try your hand on any of the essential books, even if you don't end up using any of the information gathered on the books it'll sure give you another perspective to both yours and other people's art.

I'll try to at some point, but reading artbooks makes my eyes glaze over as soon as I crack them open, for whatever reason. Still, a friend of mine started drawing recently and I'm already impressed with how he's able to shit out better drawings than when I first started, and he actually reads and practices from artbooks and stuff, so there's definitely something to it if you actually push through and do it.

Don't want to make a new thread for this but if someone can enlighten me that would be really helpful
What are some price guides to start commission work? I feel like anything I come up is either too high or too low. Not sure how to charge for Line art / Flats / Shaded / Crop or Full body.
Is there any resource or reference prices i should consider to come up with prices?

pls respond
