i only used to do line drawing for a long time too, i used to find painting really difficult and i still struggle but its easier now. I think what made me improve the most was doing value studies and working from greyscale to color, once you got the values down you can get away with almost any colors. Another tip is to find some artists that you like and observe how they paint and try to apply it to ur own art, even just a small thing like: ”oh this nose looks relly flat, how can i make it pop?” look at how ur fave artists paint noses. A fun challenge is to try to paint a whole piece with another artist’s style, you will learn alot.

I watched this video yesterday, maybe it could be some use to you aswell:

Well, personally I don't think the anatomy is "completely" busted, but there are some parts that feel off. For example the mouth seems to be in the wrong angle, like it's facing more forward when it should be 3/4, on the right side of her neck the muscle that connects from the collarbone goes under her chin when it should go towards the ear, the ear is very undefined, eyes seem very flat and don't have form. Small things that tell you don't quite have a solid grasp of anatomy. Did you use a reference? Also you should work on your values and rendering. Keep it up!

I'd advice getting some ref for this kind of spotlight. As in pic related it tends to be the case that whatever is in the back won't be as light or be completely dark, unless the light is pointing at thick smoke/fog or directly against a wall. The ground surface and its environment that is seen behind remains visible with mostly clear readable shapes, only with darker values, having very soft transitions at the edges of the cone of light as it fades into shadow, with the only exception being a smoke/fog of scenario, which makes sense as these don't have solid edges and they are almost transparent, but anything behind them should be implied as a solid object, just with the logic of something semi transparent being in front of it, study pic related's top right image if you want to have a better idea of what that looks like, especially in the area of shadow where the ground meets the wall and as it transitions into the smoke, for this learning to understanding what firm, soft and lost edges look like will allow you to recreate it in your pieces, though you may want to get a higher quality photo if you want to dig deeper.

Imo for this scene with your character I'd personally go for something like bottom left with a clear separation of light and shadow pushing the contrast between the 2 value groups, taking advantage of form and cast shadows, but you can try any of those refs (or your own) on grayscale, painting small thumbnails or just do a copy of the original while using multiply for a value check, in Photoshop you can turn the refs into B&W if you don't want to be distracted by the colors in them: just make a new layer, pick the bucket tool and fill it with black then set it into "color" blending mode, you can do this with your own painting to check your values as well.

I say Do Not Draw.

I say instead, take a Pen or Pencil to a blank piece of paper and See What Happens.

The distinction? The former intimidates, and cripples creativity through the pursuit of unrealistic ideals. The latter IS different, free of expectation, of conformity, of censure, since the objective is just getting marks on that white expanse.

Just this can be an unscaleable mountain, a devouring gulf. The inadequacy of skill, the pseudo unworthiness of not having a whole statue after knocking off a few chips of stone. It's a fear reasonably unreasonable for the effects on fledgling artists. Every line a lesson, every breath a parable. I only ever have the vaguist idea of what I intend to draw and am surprised by what happens ,both in art and the story.
This is what I have been doing over the past few weeks:hyperlapse videos of me drawing stuff for a few hours .Sometimes I will expand on a work, and make rhe sequels justifiable. Each one a mystery unraveling. So...

See what happens.

I would go either easier on the lineart (smaller brush size) or flat out remove it. Other option is not using black but other hues that don't compete with your painting.
Still, try the only painting method just to make sure your subject reads without lineart, it's good practice for value and edge control

ok first of all thank you I'm flattered, this is the first time i get a reply like this.
Second of all i really don't think I'm qualified to give art advice, because i never actually sat down and properly studied something or grinded fundies i just kinda draw whatever i feel like at the moment. this isn't me bragging this is something i regret, i feel like I could be better if i actually read a book about art or something but i just kind of have zoomer attention spam preventing me. following what i do may slow down your progress.

At any rate, i can't give you a practice schedule but I'll give you some pointers that helped me.

i like to stay very inspired and influenced by other Artists. i try to copy them.
i started off trying to emulate yoshitaka amano and ayami kojima, and some manga artists i love like tite kubo.

An artist that had a profound impact on me is Gen Jun Miya/Jun Suemi. his artbook has been posted in the artbooks thread you can find it if you dig through the archives.

i also discovered alot if artists i love on twitter, check out @Q6Q6TIKIN @phorigami @T5Fwtf and of course Yumin_Li. (these are the artists you want to aim to be like, not me)

As for practical pointers about my process, i don't do lineart, i fucking hate it. i also don't like sketching with a pencil tool, i only draw a few guidelines and sometimes i skip them entirely. i like using big blobs of paint instead and then sculpting an interesting shape out of them, i use alot of square brushes, i like the shape it gives more than round brushes. i mess around with opacity on layers alot and use lots of layers (more than i should desu). i recommend marco buccis videos on coloring and light and value (he has a cool playlist).

here's a speedpaint.
you can see me struggle alot. I'm not pro or anything.

thank you for the detailed answer, anon. I've asked a few other really skilled anons here and they all gave the same answer as you. It seems like all the best artists on this board, the ones who can really paint circles around established industry professionals, all just learned by master copies.
