The gray is toned more towards blue, but to be honest you can hue shift the colours on the clothes to get more close to the original image.

like >>6836763 says, in art, you make millions and millions of mistakes. It's impossible to consciously correct ALL of them. You can only shave them off subconsciously, more and more, but drawing and looking at your reference more. Good artists can draw without thinking that hard, because they can just "see" where things are supposed to go. They aren't "calculating" anything.

My real advice is: Do timed figure drawing. Or timed master copies, with a software and a folder of downloaded artwork you like. Do many many many studies a day. Do them accurately, but with volume. Get the basic shapes down accurately.

Also, copy small parts of the picture. Just copy the faces, or the hands. That will make things more manageable for you

What time would you recommend for both drawing and painting? Cause just doing 2 minute gesture drawings is way too short. And my biggest problem is when I draw very detailed, cause I don't practice drawing full illustration often. I often just do body part studies or face studies like you said.

you haven't drawn the iris well, in the ref there's a small sliver of eyewhite beneath his left iris for example, in general the direction he's looking at in the ref seems different from what you've drawn. it's a strained angle that produces some discomfort.
you haven't drawn the bulging/creased skin parts well, like the sections on the forehead, the crows feet, the skin coming off the nose, and especially the cheek. the cheek in the ref is bulging (low tension) while the skin going down the jaw is stretched (high tension).

It's a lot of things to explain but long story short: have a end goal, what you want to draw like, who you want to draw like; learn perspective, gesture, anatomy then values, color and so on.

It's a lot to explain and very little at the same time. The most important part is to draw a lot and to study with clear goals like: today I'm going to understand how perspective works in theory and start practicing how to draw simple forms in perspective. If you do like me and procrastinate you will NOT improve, you need goals and to actually draw, doesn't matter how good you are in the theory if you can't use that knowledge when it counts

Phillips art - perspective
Primo - gesture

I just did a piece where I drew the character and then thought it would be nice if there was an environment instead of having her just floating in space but apparently this is backwards thinking and I should be finding a good scene instead and then putting the character in it. How do I learn to draw backgrounds to put my characters in?

>> No.6837409

>>6837397
No one size fits all method, if you start with an initial figure in the void you may have to make adjuatments to fit a scene. In general asks questions "what is she doing?", "what does it look like?", "what are the hands holding?", "is she in motion? Why?" Perspective is a big issue as well. "Where is the focus?" "Who is looking at this?" "What are the top 1, 2, 3 important things that the audience must see?"
In some ways, a scene is mostly an excuse to draw the character and a believable collection of perspective lines, and value or spacing changes to lead the eye to the character.
As a personal example to illustrate, I looked at my face in the mirror and liked the lighting. I was listening to Rik Scaffer before and so the lighting reminded me of sitting in a car at night. The scene is now of a man sitting in a car at night based on the thing I liked grafted around it.

Keys to drawing: tinted glass

The more I drew the worse I felt about how badly I drew the big primary shapes. Feels weird to spend time filling in the little secondary details when the "big picture" is so fucked. But I felt like I was in too deep to redraw it

I feel like I have absolutely no real creativity, idk if it’s just my depression or what it is but I pretty much lack a drive.

Beyond that though I find I really struggle with creating things like backgrounds or places for the objects or people I draw to sit or exist in.

Example the top 3 images are currently what I’m working on, the drawing which started as a study, the original object, and then a quick sorta idk attempt at placing my drawing in some sort of setting. I really lose it at even knowing what to put in a background or how to set it up. The closet I’ve ever come was the bottom image where the background and cloth were from my head (I never finished that piece just sorta lost the drive), but even the other pieces I absolutely fall apart with figuring out how to draw stuff that isn’t directly in front of me. I try taking inspiration from artists and pieces I like, but I find I’ll just end up copying them and not really creating. I feel like I’ve spent too long trying to get better at my rendering skills when I don’t actually have any creativity or ability for real creation beyond copying life or other drawings.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up too much, drawing or painting transparent objects is tough, beyond just getting the fundamental shape of them, the lighting shading, and reflections are hard to do. At your stage I’d suggest practicing with solid objects, balls, cubes or even house hold objects that seem relatively simply, and put a heavy light on them, just focus on drawing the planes of each object in proportion and then getting the shading down. Things and exercises like picrel are helpful and don’t be afraid to push your lights and darks.

That’s the hard stuff for me lol, I’ve been depressed on and off for a decade now to the point where apathy and avolition are second nature. I don’t even remember what I used to care about, I’ll have momentary spurs of interest now and then, but they’re pretty fleeting and very surface level, like for a month or so I got very into tea and would buy and try many different types, same with coffee, but not really a passion.

I’ve thought of trying to draw scenes from books and old poetry that I like, but even then it’s hard for me to compose it or know even how to tell the story.
> didn't create for over a month but a few days ago I got that itch and ended up making stuff again
That’s pretty much how I am, I’ll draw a bit or paint, and then not have the drive for months until I come back to it, it’s been like that for the last 3 years

You're welcome to play around with any number of sizes, however I would recommend you start with a cheaper variety of pencils such as Bic or Pentel which usually come in 0.5 or 0.7 mm. These are thin enough to not require manual sharpening and thick enough to not break easily. You'll find everyone from beginners to pros using these kinds of pencils. Thicker pencils like what you're suggesting are mainly used for quite large canvases/paper, but can be used in something like a sketchbook the same way as any other pencil. It's all up to preference, really.

Try not to get too hung up on what the exact right pencils or stationary is. They're just tools and any hammer that can drive in a nail is a good hammer.

>>6838247
find appealing photo of scenery, draw what you see. i strongly believe you need to have architect gene in order to design appealing background out of nothing. remember that as far as perspective goes, the only hard requirement is to match horizon from ref to the height of camera~ground. aka if you look at anime girl in a vacuum, typically the horizon will be around her head height

First of all copies are much easier so it's natural that your other stuff is worse. Drawing requires lots of different skills, even professionals have major weaknesses in certain areas.
In general, a lot of emotions will come up while drawing so If you ride high during the good times, the lows will be devastating when they come crashing down. If you tone down the good moments a bit, the bad ones won't be as bad.

I recommend keys to drawing, or drawing on the right side of the brain, and/or Brent eviston’s course for raw beginners. This will help you with learning to see accurately and how to draw what you’re actually seeing, and not what your brain thinks you’re seeing. You also need to stop chicken scratching with your lines. Doing some stuff like this >>6838113 will probably help. That hand looks bad partly because it’s bad, but also partly because your reference isn’t very well drawn either. You should find better artists to study from, so you don’t internalize their bad habits. Look for published professionals making big money with their coom art. Definitely keep doing master studies of stuff you like and art you’re into. That’s a really important piece of study that almost nobody does enough of, so good job! Have fun and keep going, anon!

I think knowing the underlying structure is how you could improve this tenfold, the way the eyes sit in the socket tells a lot about the shadows and shapes of all the individual parts.
Try to simplify, take a look at the eyes in the asaro head for example, try to draw these and try to understand the different planes and their direction.

If you can get the impression of an eye with just a couple of lines, you know you can go into more detail later, again, try to keep it simple.

should i get a sketchbook? ive been doing digital because its cleaner but would drawing with a pencil on paper be better for a noob?

>> No.6839121

>>6839116
I do both. Digital is nice when I'm working on something concrete, sketching in a sketchbook allows for faster idea churn. And I can take my sketchbook outside the home and work wherever I want.

>>6839116
I think you should, you don't need to splurge on the high quality paper for a sketchbook, so a cheap one is always nice to have on hand. For me it's just nice to have something immediately around to sketch on in my free time, but I also like the feel of traditional sketching a lot more than I do digital. It doesn't hurt at all, and even though I prefer trad I don't think one is better over the other for a noob.

That being said, sometimes it's nice for art to not look 'clean'. The messy lines and rough shapes that come from charcoal or graphite can be turned into something truly wonderful.

Hello friends. I'm hard stuck on drawing mannequins and "fleshing them out" (aka drawing cylinders and spheres around them to make them real)

How do I get over this hurdle. Any practice exercises or books? I'm following "How to draw comics the Marvel way" and it doesn't have any exercises. For more info >>6837349

According to this guide, the marvel book should be enough for me. What does david finch mean by that? Should I just download the steve huston course and go along?

I'm trying to add a twist to the torso that wasn't in my reference so I'm having trouble getting it to look right.

The red line is my current guess at the problems.

The guide is good enough starting out. If you are very /beg/, any guide will do because you have to learn to draw in general and have to learn how to approach the human figure. Finch focuses on drawing for comics and if your goals are different, you'd have to disregard some things and include others. Don't marry yourself to a single source.

Reading your thread you have a hodgepodge of things you want to learn to draw. Every single one of them has either specific resources or threads in relation to those, because they'll take time and effort. I would suggest you learn to draw these things in this order: people, landscapes and perspective, vehicles and robots, comics.
The process using "drawing people" as an example is
>Get a book about figure drawing like Bridgeman's. Copy it.
>Use reference pictures of people in different poses and draw them, shade them. Draw the various bodyparts seperately if you are having trouble with them.
>Learn about construction and use it to draw people from imagination. Put the in scenes and so on.
It's mostly self-guided. Attempt to recreate the artists you like, copy books about the subject you want to learn, use pictures as references, draw from imagination and go back to studying if the figures look off. Repeat for everything else.

Hey /beg/

Does anyone here have a resource that they really enjoy for shapes/general design? I’m also searching for something that could help demystify appeal.

For appeal, Ive been looking at and studying things that make me feel a sense of awe, I just want to make sure I’m reviewing other viewpoints. I bet anything I have some blind spots that could use some illumination.

My favorite artists are some random chinks on pixiv making sexy looking anime girls with huge titties, not sure if they'd have an entire background on how they got to that point....

As of this moment my focus is on drawing comics. My planned route is david finch guide + beg stickies -> asg stickies and then I'd approach towards actually copying artists on pixiv/twitter (for studies) and making my own from imagination.

Sinix uses shapes I find really appealing. Can't go wrong with Proko's beginner course either, it's easy to find, if you get around.
