If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Same anon here. Am I doing these too fast? I feel somewhat good about this but also unsatisfied. I feel like I do them too quickly but I also feel like it's really the best I can do or that I feel aimless on what to do? I feel like when drawing this I started off stylized but tried to shade in a more realistic manner which makes it look a bit odd or contrasting. Used a blending stick which I'm still learning how to use.
Some parts look alright with how I did it... but other parts look completely confused on where the lighting is exactly coming from. I feel like I wasn't sure how to do it.
Critique it I guess or suggest the steps I should take?

Her left hand looks a bit stiff an unnatural, I'm assuming you want to show both breasts and tried to fit it in. If not, I'd adjust her left arm to bend upwards (if you can, do this with your own arm in front of a mirror to see how it feels first), it could block at least her left breast but it'd look more natural, as for the hand, I'd think about something like pic related, obviously applying perspective logic to it, couldn't find a better ref because all retards holding cigars are right handed on google images.
If you must show tit then the other solution is to bend her torso towards the camera with her forearm pointing up like before, meaning adjusting the entire pose.

Accept the fact that just about everything you make is going to be a failure of some kind in your eyes. The best you can do is try to make each new piece a little bit less of a failure than the last.

Think of it like working out. There's no point getting mad at yourself for not being able to run a 4 minute mile or benching 300 lbs or whatever because no-one can do that their first time at the gym. >> No.6835297

How do I get better at drawing? I'm autistic, with ADHD. I can't focus on trying to get better at all or even come up with anything to draw without just giving up and going back to looking at my phone and doing something else.

No matter what dosage of adderall I take, it's not enough. I literally can't even draw without just doing circles and then just getting bored and staring at my phone.
I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. I've never been able to commit to a serious routine, schedule, or anything. I just sit in my room online doing basically nothing.

Everything I try feels daunting and impossible.

Remove distractions. Give your phone to someone and tell them not to give it back to you for an hour or however long. Sit at an empty desk with whatever it is you're drawing on and whatever reference material you feel you need as long as it's not connected to the internet. Set a timer but put it somewhere you can't see it, but you'll be able to hear it when it goes off. Remind yourself why you're doing this, what your goals are, what kind of a person you're trying to become. Be thankful to yourself for creating this opportunity and environment. Then just do it.

If you can manage, do it at the same time every day. make it a habit and you wont need to worry about needing willpower, it will just be automatic.

I could use some help with a perspective issue. i made a blocky "head" so i could look deeper into how the perspective changes the head. My previous assumption was that lines that are closer to the camera would be the biggest/ longest. The orange, and green lines match my assumption but the center purple line is smaller than the lines on the outside... I think I understand what this is. It's distortion right?

>> No.6835408

>>6835408
Can you please elaborate, if its foreshortening? I feel like my understanding of it isnt complete. For example I do understand that because of foreshortening the purple plane looks smaller than the orange plane, dispite the fact theyre the same size, because theyre further away and it gets scrunched up. But from my understanding, the closest edge of the cube is the line is the center one, so the center line should be longer than the ones on the left and right side, because theyre further away from the camera.

Here's your explanation of foreshortening. A line's visual size isn't linearly relative to its angle to the camera, it changes slower closer to 90° angle.
>why is the further away line longer
There are two angles. The star-marked line is nearly parallel to the view on one axis and the other one is not, so the other one is visually larger along that axis.

Close one of your eyes. Hold up your stylus in front of you vertically in extended arm, notice the length from end to end. Slowly tilt the pointy end towards your eye, notice how the length changes, till stylus obscures itself and you're only able to see the tip. The edge in your example is just pointing more towards your view than the other edges. That is foreshortening.

notice the top view and side view of the car in top left: these are completely flat. no form or volume felt in these. then these are streched and deformed into perspective cube (center, left). and they are still flat and without volume, but perspective foreshortening is applied to them.

and then you FEEL THE FORMS and combine these two views into 3D volume which looks like a car with correct perspective foreshortening as a bonus.

My name is Dr. Crab Johnson. I have been an art teacher for 20 years and have helped many young men with creative aspirations to pursue a fulfilling career in finance, law, engineering and other real professions.

Many books will teach you how make illusions on paper, however mine will show you the greatest illusion, that you have ever had a chance to become an artist. I hope you will enjoy it, after you will finish reading you will never pick up a pencil again.

Started August 24th, total time to complete around 11h.
Self-critique:
>Chose a reference image that was small to begin with and doubling it's size was not enough to be able to work freely.
>Measurements are noticeably off for face, eyes with some less intense deviations everywhere else. As a copy it's poor although it still passes as a human figure.
>Values are inconsistent, brushwork is rough. While a having some texture is desired, I don't know how to make less rough most of the time. Blur is shit, any brush with smudging is making me work overtime to correct said smudge about half the time.
>Trying to preserve a low accuracy lineart was not worth it. I should have painted over them from the get go. I wasted a lot of time trying to retrofit values unto a poor drawing.
>Working dark paintings when there's evening sun shining in my window is throwing off my values. Need to turn off the Sun somehow.

I'm just glad I'm done with something again. I've got several other pieces cooking and feels like I'm spiraling into making studies to understand the problems with other studies ad infinitum.

>Try studying the Google doc
>Get bored and stop and fuck up the first drawing
>Try studying Loomis
>Legit suck at basic trig and can't understand how to construct heads and can't understand how it works
>Get visually overestimulated with sketches and all the lines and interconnected parts
>Have tons of ideas in my head but just give up as soon as I try putting them to paper
>All I can do for drawing is just drawing circles until I get bored and look at my phone >Autistic
>ADHD
>Left handed
Am I legitimately just too retarded to be an artist?

Wonderful, your rendering is reminiscent of Donatello's sculptures.

What's the term for when you try to critique your art but can't spot the error ? I was having a conversation and couldn't remember. I apologize for my autism.

>> No.6836489

>>6836481
Are you asking when you cannot see errors at all or when something feels off and you can't tell what? Both are a result of an underdeveloped eye which is natural. You can have a good eye for some things you learn and a bad eye for others.
There's no term for it as far as I know, it just means you've not trained your eye to detect that specific thing.

>underdeveloped eye
That's the "term" I was looking for, thank you for the answer it was driving me crazy. As you said though, it's not really a term. I apologize, english isn't my first language .
