6830873 No.6830873 [Reply] [Original]

>What do I want to draw?
Anime and manga style stuff. Anime girls/boys, cities, just the whole aesthetic you see when you watch anime or read manga. I'm not one of those wannabe weeb faggots, I genuinely appreciate the medium for it's differences and contrast to the western comics style. It gives off this "just you and your pencil" vibe which I'm all in for, because I believe I'm that kinda artist who likes keeping stuff to only a pen, pencil and eraser. Been inspired to draw it ever since seeing https://youtu.be/t3rKrTehORY, I wanna be like this.
I also do want to draw some western stuff as well! Transformers, cars, comics, cartoons, western cities, civilizations, cyberpunk towns etc. all that good stuff too.
>My previous experience
Not much desu. I do know how to use a pencil (not that well though). Long ago, when I was actively practicing getting into sketching manga/anime, I followed this https://youtu.be/vUpu6A7XVTs and my end result was 75-85% of the original. But that's about it. Whenever I'd try to draw something from my imagination, or draw without a tutorial but an image on my monitor, I'd fail fucking miserably. The drawing would turn out shit, shit proportions, no perspective, no depth, no shade, no "art", no beauty, just bland inaccurate shit. 3D stuff would appear 2D.
>Tools
Ticonderoga no.2, pen+gear no.2 pencils, pentel orenz nero, papermate ballpoint pens, kneadable eraser, normal eraser, sharpener, and nothing else. I love the idea of sketching/drawing with a pen & pencil only. B&W stuff.
>Skill level I want to reach
I don't want to reach professional tier where I'm making my own manga. I just wanna reach that hobbyist tier of skill where I can accurately replicate a manga/anime character, draw atmospheres with my own imagination with the manga theme etc. I want to be able to apply beauty, depth, shade, and sketching to my drawings so that they don't look bland but rather something to be proud of.

>Frustrations
Just to expand on from "my previous experience", I've always just felt so incompetent with my art journey. It would seem an impossible task to properly draw what I want to draw. To properly sketch what I want to sketch. My hands and pencil would just NOT replicate the image on my mind or on my monitor. I just don't have the skill. I'd scour the internet for hours only to fall for those bullshit traps of "buy my course and you'll be kentaro miura in no time!" shit and I'd lose all hope. That's why I gave up. It's been almost 6 years since I'd done anything remotely related to sketching/drawing.

If you seriously don't know how to filter instructional material, here:
Make a list of competent artists whose art you like.
Make a list of teachers or master artists or instructional books that they recommend.
Of those authors, make a list of those whose art you like.
Sort the list by how close their art is to your initial list of competent artists.
Do the exercises in the books in order until you find one that clicks. Do all exercises in that book at least twice.
Repeat the previous step for the next book on the list.

Sometimes it really is that simple.

Yes, it's extremely difficult. You feel frustrated because all you've done is follow a tutorial that walks you through drawing exactly 1 thing, and the better-than-expected results mislead you. Following tutorials does not engage with any of the biggest hurdles when it comes to drawing.
Anyway how you get started is, and I truly mean this, just trying to draw your "end goal" stuff from the get-go. You need to come to terms with the idea that the long, long road to your goal will be paved with terrible drawings. That's how every single one of your idols got to where they are, and it's how everyone who reaches such goals gets there too -- as is constantly repeated every time somebody asks. There's no magical knowledge that's going to reduce the amount of work it takes. You need to draw thousands and thousands of drawings where you earnestly attempt to create your best drawing. And remember that progress is best measured over multiple years. Improvement is slow, no matter how many epic progress images you see where somebody posts their very worst drawing next to their very best drawing and calls it progress.

Doesn't it sound extremely inefficient though? Because, if I don't even have the techniques and the skill required to draw good, what point is there in drawing the end goal over and over again only to realize the drawing looks like shit.

What you guys said is pretty close to what I used to do in the past! Follow tutorials over and over again, get close to the end result (aka one the guy shows in the video) but when it comes to drawing that SAME thing ON YOUR OWN (just a picture, no motion of someone *showing* you how to draw the curves and lines*, yeah the result is shit.

Ideally I'd like a pathway where I go through x y z resources, practice drawing my "end goal" every week to get a measure of my improvement over time, and then study some more about the fundamentals and theories of art that exist, such as anime/manga style sketching, shading, anatomy etc.
*PS*: Do you guys think I should just jump right in with the /beg/ and /asg/ stickies and start drawing and then find good resources later along the line? Or search for the most recommended stuff from the get go (like I am doing rn... but it's quite hard to find stuff widely recommended, thanks to the anon >>6831987 for the process though)

*PERFECT practice makes perfect* ftfy

I just needed to get along with the "perfect practice" all this time to improve. Drawing the same dogshit over and over and over again did nothing from me, I can say this from personal experience because the thing I mentioned about followed a pajeet on yt and copying his thing wasn't only done once. I probably have 3 dozens of anime sketches/artwork I did that way, and guess what the practice didn't make me any better at sketching by myself.

What it did though improve my pencil handling skills, I still thank myself for being able to draw proper sketchy lines and spheres, and it also taught me a little bit about drawing eyes.

Pure pseudointellectual self-sabotage.

I wanted to do this too but after a near death experience I realized that what I truly want to draw are cute girls with fat dicks having sex, I have never been happier since I came home from the hospital and just sat down to draw women with fat horsecocks instead of whatever pseud manga garbage I was fantasizing about before.

Also my point wasn't that you should draw women with fat dicks, just find something SPECIFIC you are passionate about as opposed to 'durr i want to draw uhh, the whole epic anime aesthetic bro, gnomesayin?'

The people who have that epic cool manga anime aesthetic got to it by using it as an instrument to tell a story they are passionate about and not by pseud grinding with no specific purpose in mind. It was "i need to achieve X in order to tell my story" and not "wow x is so cool imma learn that cause its like cool and epic"
