People share paid brushes for free to their other artist friends all the time, just don't start broadcasting that you're giving it away for free. The CSP asset store is able to detect if you're trying to resell an existing brush with custom assets that you just modified slightly.

Basically just don't profit off the brush itself. You can do whatever you want when you use it for art.

I'm a beginner artist and I tried replicating traditional paintings with digital brushes in an attempt to better understand more classical forms of art, but it feels like replicating those effects takes a fuckload of knowledge on how to manipulate brush settings. Anybody have a set of "tattoo" brushes? They emulate the thickness of lines, stipple effects, mag shading lines, and different sizes and formulations of the different needle sizes/configurations.

Some says uses some special brushes (and there are many good ones which brings you like 80% there) to mimic traditional painting but imho it's more on the technique rather than the actual brush to achieve the traditional look.

I'll say check out ways to render, especially looking up traditional paint-overs videos, see how they put down and layer their colors.

Also ask yourself, do you prefer painting with opaque colors? or more transparent/watery colors?
Or you prefer dry and heavy (opaque) brushes with "holes" or textures built-in so you can stack strokes on top of another?
Or do you like to color pick every single color and put them on the canvas first, then blend them together?

Also there's different techniques that are exclusive to digital painting and feel free to experiment including but not limited to:
> putting down simple value/hues and then lasso/mask the area to insert different color or details
> layer modes/gradient map + masking
> brushes with color dynamics
> mixer brushes + textures (see Greg Rutkowski)

i actually haven't used paintstorm in a while, i just discovered these in an artstation account i forgot i even had. but it hasn't been too long that i don't remember it. i just downloaded it back to give a more accurate description of the program.

i wouldn't approach it as a photoshop or clip studio paint dupe. it's more like a corel painter dupe. i have higher opinion of paintstorm studio than corel painter despite lacking in some areas.

paintstorm is more of an oil/acrylic painting program, opacity/flow based works if you come from photoshop, or round brush/round airbrush/round painting brush/lasso tool based works if you're an anime/manga inspired artist can also be done. with the exception of watercolors, you can mock any traditional medium, however if you're one of the "i love doing traditional in digital" people, i'd recommend realistic paint studio from the same developers instead. filters are lacking but there's liquify that works in the photoshop way, blur, sharpen, luminance to alpha, and a smart color correction window which holds a lot of color correction options and gradient mapping. features that are not a staple in a art program are mostly beta tests.

the ui is amazing, you can customize it more than most art programs. it's one of the few drawing programs that has gpu acceleration. if you're using a low spec device things can lag, but it doesn't require the latest high spec device either. stuff from the last 4-5 years should be enough. it's available on windows, mac, linux and ipados. if you're interested in realistic paint studio instead, with the exception of linux it's the same.

is it special or otherwise unique? no, not even at it's release year. however i will say it had more worth at it's release year and a few years after that. at it's release a lot of art programs used today were more primitive versions of itselves. painstorm was also primitive at it's release but from what i gather the updates were frequent back then. nowadays it's 1 update a year.

if you have the correct gear (stuff from the last 4-5 years+wacom/huion tablet) it's disgustingly good at things it can do. it's the only program that manages to capture the sai watercolor brush for example, i could download shit tons of sai watercolor brush imitations from the clip studio asset store and none of them would work like it does in sai. can't say the same about "classic sai water" brush in paintstorm studio... they managed to recreate koji komatsu's dark magic. all and all i can say i fell in love with this program again. my only complaints are:

-it can be a resource hog sometimes
-there are way too many default brushes. some do not serve a purpose besides being a demo brush, some outright do not need to be there
-there are not enough filters

you could install phyton scripts and rakurri, david revoy&ramon miranda's brushes to krita and you get a freetard setup that becomes an equal to, or exceeds paintstorm studio. if you're one of those "muh industry standard"s, you can keep using photoshop. if you don't care about celsys drama you can keep using clip studio paint. if you're on a device older than some posters here you can keep using paint tool sai+intuos 3. however if you ever have some spare cash, consider trying this program out. i actually got this program on a black friday sale so maybe look out for that. wes gardner has done commercial work using paintstorm studio and if you're considering a main course instead of a side dish, consider that too.

So I downloaded the set and it seems it's only one brush and you have to load the textures on it. My problem right now is that I don't know how to export textures.

doesn't look like you can, at least not from the clip studio interface.
there's a bunch of folders in Documents/CELSYS, but they don't contain the raw image files, just some weird proprietary material files. they're also deeply nested with obfuscated naming. it's almost like they don't want people to share assets from the marketplace!
if you assign a texture to a brush, then export it as a .sut, the texture follows along, but this has something like 70 textures so i can understand if you don't want to do that

you have to go into the texture settings and check "use for brush tip shape," then you export a brush with the texture as a brush tip. then as soon as anyone else imports the brush, they'll get the texture too. yes it is very annoying. i think you can load multiple textures to the same brush though.

New to CSP - how do I get my imported brushes to SAVE? Every time I close the app and reopen everything I dropped in is gone.

close the app from the X mark. i save a dummy file beforehand just in case. if you close the app from task manager, power off your pc before closing clip studio paint, or lose power, it rolls back.

if this doesn't work either, drop the celsys files from appdata>roaming to some seperate folder for back up, this will reset clip studio paint to it's initial state. after dropping your assets do the things above. if it STILL doesn't work, consider repairing or uninstalling/reinstalling (preferrably with a software that also takes care of the registry just in case). you'll need to back up/remove the celsys files from appdata>roaming again.

i'll make this post a bit more general

you can embed the textures in a dummy brush (i usually go by stock g-pen brush) then save that brush. when you import the brush it will register it as a material. the materials should be good to go for a brush, but in case it's a texture that's for use as a canvas texture as well, you import the picture by dragging the file to the canvas, right click/long tap the layer, click/tap convert layer(h)>type(k), change it to a image material layer, then on operation>object>tool property:object, enable tiling.

another one that's a pain in the ass to export are gradient sets. you need to convert the gradient maps to a gradient subtool one by one, you can do this by selecting a dummy gradient subtool, go to subtool detail>advanced settings>select your desired gradient map>hit OK, then save the gradient subtool. to import the subtool back as a gradient map, gradient subtool>subtool detail>advanced settings and depending on your usecase, either just add the gradient and click OK or create a folder and then add the gradient and click OK.
