Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I'm not looking for size fits all
I just want any semblance, any morsel of guidance

People here tell you to study the books, but when you do they tell you, you should copy instead

When you copy the say you need construction instead

All the books recommended use construction. but apparently you're supposed to copy instead

>I haven't seen anyone do exactly what you're doing though

It's the loomis method (maybe a bit fucked)

hide uses it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWEKKwKZtWU&pp=ygURaGlkZSBjaGFubmVsIGhlYWQ%3D

minimaru uses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m0qnJmR4YY&list=PLMzSsN13py1hIz1Q-s49LWF-IkKna9Swv&index=1&pp=iAQB

yusuke murata uses it, miura used to use, a bunch of JPs recommend loomis

but then I come here and it seems like it's a foreign concept

How do people here do it then. I want to know. that's what I'm here for. advice. critique. sharing ideas

>People here tell you to study the books, but when you do they tell you, you should copy instead
>When you copy the say you need construction instead
you need to do both retard, both!
everything helps, construction is more like a tool to help you understand 3d shapes and copying other artists will help you learn shapes because at the end of the day drawing is just all about shapes
see drawing > simplify shape> copy shape > recreate shape

It's incorrect because the plume line are doing all the work rather than the loomis head itself, which is better suited for realism. You gotta find what proportions and construction works for YOU rather than look to win clearly bad faith arguments from bitter ngmis and nodraws on 4chan. If you are desperate to an artist that uses construction to draw than you will apricate

But again you really have to find what methods work for you at the end of the day.

Fucking this

The ball is such a /beg/trap unless you actually understand the form and corners of the face. Many artists use the guidelines differently too and often omit the ball and go for a more oval shape, feeling the top of the head and it's corners are the most important. It gets meme'd but learning actual realism will help you understand how to better use the construction methods and you'll hopefully figure out your own method. You'd honestly be better off trying to learn from 3d anime wireframe topology than trying to use the loomis method while you're lacking an understanding of the form

Thank you Anon. Thank you very much.

It's just that this is supposedly the last bastion of the art community on the internet

Twitter is well...Twitter
Tumblr has no community aspect to it
Discord is mostly full of drama and people wanting to show off
Misskey is JP only
Mastodon is in it's infancy

If I can't ask here. I'm kind of on my own, just hoarding resources I barely know how to apply
And with so many courses and book, it's hard to know which one would be good for me you know?

> you really have to find what methods work for you at the end of the day

I went with loomis because I'm going for a not so stylized look for my drawings (Something like ghost in the shell 1995)
Loomis is apparently good for realism so I figured. "hey it could work!"

But you are right.
There's no point in arguing here.

Unironically trust your eyes more and let your hand throw confident lines, as in one swift motion while not second guessing yourself in the middle of it, if this exercise is trapping you in the idea of fearing not to match the ref then you'll be gritting your teeth because it's very unlikely that you'll just ace it 1st try.
I've seen Krenz demonstrations and even him fucks up proportions sometimes, I checked his cartoon dog exercise and he made it too wide in comparison, even with his units of measurement.
Allow yourself to fuck up some, if that means that you're letting your hand feel more confident, then come back and do this more restrictive exercise of matching it perfectly for flexing if you want.
Also I'm assuming you're using a default brush with no size jitter on, I'd at least use it to test the pressure of you pencil so you get a feel of your lines, it develops some awareness of how you're using your pencil, even if it's not like the real thing (which you can always try when you feel too disconected or unsure of how a real line would feel), but it's good enough.

I won't be abandoning the grid entirely since I feel like I am on the right track compared to last time, but I will make sure to have WAY less reliance on it. I'll focus on making a pretty drawing instead of a matching copy next.

As ugly as the lines are and as soulless as the coloring is for mine, it lines up well enough I feel that I could sacrifice a bit of it in favor of working on my lines.

A practical tutorial on how to break down a dress.
Anyway, it's going to be changed in the back. I'm going to add a few more strips to the top of the non-important clothes depending on the situation.
Before remembering to use a color lighter than the color of the shadow to increase the reflection from the zigzag (the blue one is brighter), you can use a color that is lighter than the color of the shadow to increase the reflection.
Or, it is wise to erase any areas that are too prominent. It's easy to use the Chalk Tool to create the A-slot, and it's easy to pull the strength of the image through it. Increase the light, or save it. Tidy up the clothes, adjust the light, and make sure that the Z-shape is bigger than the base color.
When the selection is small, a 2-letter font is more abstract. The Zigzag shape of the bodice must be continuous because of the speed and unity of the fabric. Please remember that. Observe the way the zigzag pattern moves, and see how the pattern stays uniformly laid out, and how natural the pattern is.

This is exactly why /asg/ is the worst of the 'study generals'. Nearly everything is some half-assed studies that anyone can tell you people learned nothing from doing. These threads used have photos reference dtiys at the top of each thread were people would have to convert the images in anime. Funny how things that that most Japanese artist and artbook teaches you to do asg completely avoids in favor trying to draw someone else picture 1:1 while not understanding that milage and learn basic principles like construction and perspective is far more important than 100% accuracy when you are first starting out.

now >>6836488 this is where we and him can learn a lot, there's some things that could be done better, lower right leg is really thinn , perspective, composition. you'd need an excuse to introduce an extra color (through reflected light or from a prop), or add a greater range of contrast. when I say contrast I mean like either adding Ambient Occlusion do under her pits is darker and it focuses more on her tits, or you darken the tits instead because they're close to the POV.

So as a fresh starting out /beg/ what is the best course of action to jump right on the anime study grinding train? What I accumulated from videos and some text tutorials is that one should first improve their own line quality and line confidence first before everything else with the following exercises: cross hatching, line ghosting, tracing over a ruler line, drawing 2D shapes, simple 3D shapes, deformed 3D shapes and then finally a lot of tracing over artworks of ones personal favorite anime and comic artists. Are these proper exercises to get better as beginner in your opinion?
But an actual question is about the following next step of grinding timed quick sketches of a diverse set of artists and real human photo references. When trying to capture the people from a real photo reference, should you draw in stylized anime face features and somewhat changed proportion or do your best to copy straight on model? I have seen different artists showing their copied sketches being divided on that. I suppose when just wanting to learn "anime style" the former one is the way to go?

Anyone able to help me use multiply layer better?

When I look at the anime source I refuse to believe they are color picking each of her colors, especially when this frame is visible for <2 seconds

What do they to multiply layer here? Or are they actually just selecting each of the colors

Love your work anons I wish there was a good rendering guide

>> No.6840923

>>6840363
I feel you. I started trying to add softer shadows to my drawings and trying to make it look closer to how most japanese artists seem to render, but I can't get it right and choosing colors is one of biggest roadblocks I face
that and the fact that my blur and smudge tools in clip studio don't seem to act as nicely as in the speedpaints I watched

>> No.6841117

>>6840363
It has noise and blur and it looks like they use a gradient to simulate a light source from top to bottom
Also the image is compressed so that adds more noise

How do you feel about idiots who preach at you to stop drawing anime?

Heh, thats one long ass ribcage. Perhaps you do need to study, upper torso is not quite connecting right.

>> No.6841673

>>6825761
Torso is broken. Far right arm doesnt connect into the shoulder, and the raised leg is too short because you decided to think there would be foreshortening when its reallly moreso turning to the side. Also the face is kinda weird, the nose is too far left and the mouth too far right and low, as well as the hair reading very flat. Biggest thing is that her eye placement is off, so her gaze looks retarded.
