When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I have a very dumb specific question...
If I'm attempting to introduce more warmth/saturation on the terminator line (light/shadow divide), what is the best method to do this digitally on photoshop? You usually see it on skintones.
For reference, this /ic/thread picture has it clearly on the rightmost arm area (light patch above the sleeve).

https://i.4cdn.org/ic/1692818174538025.png

Would you simply define the light/dark areas and then use lasso tool and a brush (set to color) to paintover the shadow area with more red tone? Or some other layer setup?

I feel like I've been spinning my wheels as of late, I don't think I'm progressing and I'm not too sure what to do.
I've been doing this coquis practice (kind of) daily and got to day 6
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTY4AtphBe8PSqfXT4qfxwdbLgSK0XZ9v&si=ILNg6lKwy5hpYzfB
and trying to start off with "how to draw the marvel way" because of the David finch roadmap thing and copied everything (excluding fully completing the proportion guide) from beginning to just the start of the figure chapter.
Pic related is what I've done so far.
I know that there are a bunch of other things I need to improve on, like understanding how to draw the basic shapes on the body, but the one thing that's been constantly tripping me up is proportions, can't seem to nail that down for some reason and taking 10 mins per pose on the coquis practice thing
Not too sure what to ask specifically, maybe than if there is a way to help improve my proportions more, but any sort of help would be nice.
Also, sorry for the long post

The grind is a lie. Quantity is not going to get you there. You think 50 quickly hashed out poses is better than 5 that you seriously paid attention to and referenced from pros? Skip the grind. Go study the exact piece that you want your drawings to look like. Do it only once but do it well to the point were it’s nearly indistinguishable from the original. That will net you way more gains.

Pretty much. Your ability to notice mistakes always precedes your ability to correct them so it feels like you're stagnating until your technical skill begins to catch up with your knowledge of what you're trying to accomplish. I would say the chart is off a bit in that the average person's perception of their skill probably stays low throughout a greater percentage of the incline where they're actually improving. I think falling into the rabbithole of looking for resources can be a distraction. Usually just a quick youtube search gives me a decent video on my problem to get me in the right direction. A ten minute video on human proportions is probably all you need.

He can draw poses when the action isn't too intense but when it gets complicated things look weird, beyond that he has a tendency to wrap his characters in meat balloons and occasionally forgets they have bones. its impressive how well you convey the form using only lines. you barely even use hatching. almost all of it conveyed solely through precise outlines. great work anon

the only things worth criticizing that i can see is how sometimes the lines that end inside a volume have too harsh of an ending.
the "v" shape at the top of the butt crack on the right figure, as well as the underside of the breast and the underside of the butt cheeks on the left figure.
those lines imply too strong of an angle change in the surface while the refs have very smooth and gradual transitions at those spots. as for how to solve it i have no idea. i would attempt to make up for that by using values / shading or use subtle hatching but those are not real solutions since your style is fine, clean lines
perhaps that double-line on the left figures armpit is the way to go for these kinds of spots...

anyways, outstanding as always!

It’s okay, anon. Drawing is hard and it’s not a hobby for everyone. Don’t let people bully you into drawing, and don’t let people bully you into stopping. Do what you like, what fulfills you. Fuck the rest. I’ll say that if the decision to stop drawing feels like a relief, then it’s probably good to stop and do something else. But, if you feel resentful or feel like the decision to stop drawing was not actually your own, then I’d say to reconsider. Either way, try not to take it so seriously. Take a break from /ic/ to clear your head and refocus on what YOU want and what YOU feel. Knowing when to quit is its own virtue, so just take a moment to breathe and really consider this. Maybe you’ll find that you want to return after a break, or maybe you’ll find moving on was a great idea. Just don’t let a Chinese baking forum make that decision for you.

great if you want to draw boxes

whatever you learn from drawabox, you learn more efficiently and with less soul drain by drawing what you want to draw and turn on your brain while doing it
there are terminal cases of autism / no internal monologue that gravitate towards drawabox because they can just follow lessons without thinking which would be fine on its own, but since they seek to mindlessly follow lessons, they usually do not see what little improvement potential there is in drawabox

I still have trouble drawing clothes
I've watched courses on how to draw folds and drapery and I read the burner Howarth book
and the thing is; I know how to draw folds, and I know basic anatomy, but my clothes still look like shit because the silhouette looks bad, and my character loses proportions
I can draw tight clothes easily but it's really hard to draw loose clothes, at least for me
I think my problem is the composition
Is there a good book on fashion design, how to maintain good ratios, and composition in general? how to make clothes look good using interesting shapes maybe?
it's so frustrating because every course is about folds and I already know the different types of folds, Some people don't even know how to draw folds and still manage to make clothes look good

I found vilppus and steve hustons method equally good, hamptons specific method of GESTURE was not for me tho.

If you need a good course on figure drawing I would unironically recommend Brent Eviston tho, you can get it from the /ic/ torrent in the video course thread. Just download Qbittorrent and you can select what you want to download and what not, no need to download 1tb of shit.

unironically grab a construction heavy book like anatomy design and invention and do figure studies

you begin by going for 3D forms but you quickly fall back into 2D symbols so you need more practise in bridging that gap
also redline good anime artists that draw lots of twisted and in perspective bodies, try redlining them, drawing construction on top of their drawings then copying it yourself

another underrated tip is to draw bigger, the bigger you draw the easier oyu can insert more details, for example i thought i sucked at drawing hands until i realised i was drawing too small so i couldnt draw hands properly, then i decided to draw bigger both higher res and occupying whole canvas, and suddenly i wasnt that sucky at hands because i could actually apply what i knew i just needed the sapce for it

this all sounds like a non answer but really, this is a case of needed more mileage, sometimes you just gotta grind it out unlike /ic/ neet lefties

By drawing for years and years and honing your eye to a very high degree of accuracy. Also, use plumb lines

>Just the pencil method?
There are many pencil methods. What do you mean by pencil method? You should read Loomis' Figure Drawing book, his method of using the pencil to measure is very good, and doesn't make it a crutch. If you measure like him, you'll continue to be able to draw very well

>Do grids help at all?
They're great, and they don't eliminate the need to draw and know form. It's a good "halfway" point between tracing and drawing freehand.

Just focus on the big shapes for your studies, make them quick and do hundreds of them, don't beat yourself up if you don't get the shapes right the first time, but also don't just do them mindlessly, concentrate on which direction the stroke will go, what size and if it's placed correctly. That's all the advice I can give you regarding that, there really is no secret, atleast that I know of.
Now for advice to a younger me? Well I'd say that while classes and books definitely help and I encourage you to seek them, at the end of the day knowledge of something is only 20% of the battle, things will only *click* for you after you draw something hundreds of times, so be patient, younger me, and work hard and you WILL get better. Nice work on your second try btw.

This is probably a really dumb question, but what if I like a lot artists and I want to mimic lots of them? By that I mean what if the artists I like to study have completely opposite art styles, would it be better to just stick with one artist I like to study and be consistent with their style?
TL:DR: Would it be better to be stick with one artist style to maintain consistency?

first of all, the underlying qualities that you like about opposite artist's works and styles might be not opposite themselves. perhaps what you are drawn to is for example "rough yet clear, bold lines and shapes" but different artists use those in different styles. or perhaps "stylization of features into the abstract, but realistic light and colors" - this too is broad enough to be found in different artist's works.

second you should not be too narrowly focused on this whole question of what style you should develop / imitate. you learn, progress, experiment and yes copy too - but in the end you have no choice about your style. it will always end up as an approximation of an "ideal" picture according to your taste. and your taste will evolve, and your willingness to pursue that style will fluctuate with how lazily and laid back or how dead serious you want your process of drawing to be.

as for what to do about having multiple idols specifically, i personally would advise you to copy / imitate / study all of them however you feel like to nurture that natural distillation and extraction of their aesthetic choices into your own art. that being said, if you want to improve your artstyle right fucking now and you dont care about how natural it will feel to draw in that style long term, hyper focus on one style.
focus = progress but fragile
relaxed "natural" switching according to your gut feeling = less progress but solidifying what you have so far

Thanks for the in depth reply anon. It's just the part is that I'm concerned the most is that I'm able to make stuff of my own after studying a single artist I like for a while. Like after copying, trying from imagination, to well making stuff from my own.
The art style part is just the underlying part of what I'm questioning. It's just whether or not I'm able to draw stuff from imagination after sticking to one artist for so long.
But I get what you mean, almost everything is stylization in a way, I just want to be more consistent AND then moving to a different style.
I just don't want to be all over the place between the artists I study.

i am not quite sure i understand your post
but if (one of) your concern(s) is the ability to produce art from imagination after studying other artists for a long time - why not make that simply part of your routine

for example after you copy some artists work, find a reference image that is somewhat similar (big tittied anime girl in a bikini -> photo of a japanese pin up girl in a similar pose wearing a bikini) and then try to copy that reference but "pretending" like you are the artist you study.
when you feel comfortable doing that, try creating a similar pic in a similar style from imagination right after studying a specific artists work.
if you feel overwhelmed by that, make it a bit easier for yourself and erase part of the artists work, and redraw, repaint, etc, in its place something that looks as close to the original as you can get.

you fear of getting rusty when it comes to producing own art vs copying others is valid, i notice it too. however i believe it is mostly dependent on the amount of *time* that you spend not drawing your own pictures --- its not the ratio between "your own art" and "copying".
what i mean is, if you create 9 pictures from your imagination and only 1 copy of another artists work, you can still be rusty and out of shape if there are weeks between each picture.
however if you create 9 copies and only 1 single original image, but you create 5 pictures per day, your ability to create from imagination would not suffer.
that example is oversimplified, but it gets the point across.
so it might be worth considering just to produce pictures faster at the cost of making them less polished

Did you read a perspective book beforehand? Are you deconstructing the landscape with perspective lines? You shouldn't just try to copy whats in the picture before you ubderstand or math out how it's constructed. Similar to anatomy in the sense that blind copying isn't going to activate your almonds as well as nowing how and where all important parts are and should be.

Both for different reasons. Deconstruct them and analyze them first, then build up the painting when you have a grasp of the perspective and shapes.

NTA, but another way to think of it is to try and put yourself into the mindset of the master you're studying. Actively consider "How did he build this structure?" or "Why did he choose to do this?"

A lot of it will boil down to something like "that's how perspective works" but in the process you'll be trying on how other artists learned and understood fundamental facets of art, and in seeing where other artists overlap or deviate is where you'll learn your own path.

Ears aren't symmetrical. Seemingly one starts from the side of the head, but the other from the middle of the head.
Back of the head is too flat.
I wouldn't draw eyebrows like you currently do, they feel too much like eyelashes. A bit more solid, thicker lines for them would work better. Can experiment if you want to keep your current way of drawing eyebrows, but alter it in some fashion.
Such a thick nose and a small nostril don't go together well. The nostril feels more like a piercing and that you've omitted to draw in the nostril for stylistic reasons.
Her hair seems frontloaded too much. The bangs seem to be positioned too much to the front and square.
The body seems proportionally wrong compared to the head.
The hips and ribs seem too thin, the puffy clothing makes it seem like her torso is barely larger than her neck.
Going with just curved lines for thighs and skirt to hide the hips isn't working in your favor. Either move the skirt down and hit hip shape through it, or move the skirt up and show more ass and hips. Currently seems like legs are escaping from a void.
Shoes seem mirrored when feet and shoes in general aren't symmetrical.
Props to you adding some depth to the gun. It feels a bit too flat still, but unclear if that isn't just lineart feel or if there is an unrelated issue that I perceive through the gun.

What the fuck is wrong with you, how can you think combining anime and these weird westoid bimbo features like the mouth and eyes, and this weird nose, this isn't a "style" it's just ugly and confusing. Either fully go with anime, or fully develop a western style, but mixing both never looks good. Copy more anime

Pawell is afraid, he almost never draws himself. He is just autistically copying every art book in existence, especially perspective, I don't get his obsession about perspective, especially the really technical parts about it, maybe he wants to become an architect? Idk. But this is 4chan for you, a point where the universe funnels it's autist and schizos into a single concentrated point for all to see, but this is what makes it so great.

The ratios are sort of fine, the head could even stand to be a bit bigger. The bigger problem is her stick figure body and a seemingly elongated torso. I think you got the shape of a tall women right for the most part, but a few key sections being off makes it look worse.
As mentioned previously - legs coming out of the skirt without any real indication of hips. Not mentioned before - the lower section of the sweater, the large band across her groin area combined with the gun obscuring part of her and the torso being leaned back like that make it seem like she's been cut in half and her lower half is shifting one way and the top half the other.
I would recommend a figure drawing or two of a tall broad just to make sure you aren't trying to make a stick figure and hiding it with clothing.

Take more measurements. Mark the top and bottom of your page's drawing area and the top and bottom of the thing you are drawing, divide them vertically into 4 or 8 parts. Use these parts as waymarks so you can better recreate the subject.

Thanks anon, and sorry for the late-ass reply (and bumping a dying thread back into misery).

I would advise against setting these drawings as a milestone for your development. Especially in the Kirk Douglas portrait, my brushwork feels rushed and undeliberate, and I demonstrate a shoddy understanding on soft and hard edges and, consequently, how to capture form. It's why I posted them in the beg thread. I'll concede they don't look as bad from afar/as thumbnails, so I guess I managed to capture a fraction of that form?

I wish I had any valuable advice to give you, but from where I stand I'm as clueless as the next guy. There is not much insight to give in my technique; I just crudely imitate a photo and hopefully I glean a thing or two from it. Though, it's only been less than a month since I started practising that seriously and consciously--until I rest on my oars again anyway lol

Hello Anons, I have been aimless for about 3 days as to what to study to fulfill what I want to learn.
I want to study body construction and anatomy more, but I can't find a book in E-hentai that convinces me, maybe I don't search enough so I just end up studying something on Pinterest (although I notice those references are somewhat poorly done) any advice to be able to continue with what i want to learn

Should I take reference photos of people?
I attach my latest study of Miguel Ohara's gesticulation

And this is the last piece that I did of the full body, I know that it can be improved a lot and that is why I want to study more the construction of the bodies and anatomy, both male and female, but I don't know where to look for that information.
