The anons here shitting on Draw a box are not doing so because they have analyzed its goals and methodology and decided that its ineffective.
They will shit on anything thats about grinding fundamentals because for some reason they believe grinding is antithetical to "art". That art is some spontaneous creative endeavor that is stifled by rigid practice or system of thought.
The reality is, they just dont have the discipline to stick with any kind of structured learning regiment (all of them probably got shit grades in school) and they hate the idea that such an approach could actually be effective, because if it is effective, then they look bad for being unable to stick with it.
So its very important for them to shit on any approach to learning that is structured

Again, structure never worked for them, because they cant be consistent, they can't pay attention and follow instructions, so they respond assuming structure doesnt work at all, rather than realizing THEY are the problem.

So why is drawabox shit and what should you do instead

Draw a box has 3 goals.
Develop your mechanical accuracy and control (drawing straight lines and ellipses)
Develop perspective intuition
Develop useful constructive techniques

Draw a box is only useful for the first goal. And even then, not that great.
The first goals is fine, if you are an anon shitting on draw a box, and you cant put 2 points down on a paper more than 5 inches apart and confidently draw a perfectly straight line between them
And then lay another line on top of the first, but still have it look like just 1 line but darker, then maybe you should do draw a box.
Im not gonna explain why its important for an artist to have precise control over their arm

Last month i grinded mechanical accuracy separate from draw a box because drawabox wasnt autistic enough. And i intended to do draw a box this month to learn perspective and develop intuition.

The word "intuition" in is very important here. Intuition is the goal of almost all aspects of learning art.
Developing intuition means getting to the point where you can do something WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT.
Art simply involves too many mental processes, you cannot consciously perform all the tasks you need to, to draw well, you have to let your subconscious handle most of the tasks.

There are lots of intuitions you have to learn in art.
The primary one for example is Proportional intuition, the ability to look at a reference, draw it at a different size and still have all the lengths and angles be in accurate proportions. A good artist doesn't break out a ruler and compass for this, they even stop doing that thumb measuring thing with a pencil.

But that doesnt mean you shouldnt TRAIN these skills specifically. Specific training is the fastest way to develop individual intuitions.
So back to perspective intuition, which is an internalized idea of how object contours behave in 3d space, when seen by human eyes.

1) Draw a box DOES NOT TEACH PERSPECTIVE. He literally says so in the intro

Being able to understand and do something consciously is the first step to being able to do it unconsciously, aka intuition.
No one who does draw a box actually walks a way with a real understanding of the rules and components of perspective. His treatment of the topics of vanishing points and view planes and cone of vision are all very shallow.
DrawABox guy seems to think you can develop good perspective intuition by just drawing boxes, without any of the technical knowledge, and divorced from the real world scenarios they represent.
Because his treatment of perspective is so loose and vague, people fall into the habit of just ignoring the technical side and just drawing boxes that "look right".
But your boxes that look right are probably wrong, and at that point you're not really learning anything.

Fortunately there are better resources.
Ironically, "Perspective Made Easy" is one of the most indepth books on perspective ive read
Its about as detailed as than scott robertsons how to draw, and its much easier to read.
Loomis's successful drawing also has a great chapter on perspective, but is also a hard read

The excersizes in PME asks you to draw objects that exist under different conditions, that you can find around you, so that you can relate the technical concepts to physical conditions you are experiencing.
This is a much more effective way to build intuition. You start with the technical understanding, then relate it to the raw visual/physical expirience. Then you draw.
This is also much less tedious than just drawing 250 arbitrary boxes
DrawAbox starts with shallow technical understanding, then asks you to grind a detached abstraction of this phenomenon that you dont even understand in the first place. Its dumb

Perspective Made Easy teaches you how to subdivide space in perspective, then says go draw the side of a building with a lot of windows, or some roman arches to try it out
It teaches you how shadows work in perspective then tells you to go put together a still life to try it out
It teaches you how slopes drastically alter perspective and then tells you to imagine certain sloped scenarios and draw them in perspective, using your knowledge of how slopes work
Its a much better way to internalize the technical knowledge, and the different conditions under which it should be applied

It covers topics such as
placing objects arbitrary on the plane
Scaling objects in space accurately
Even/Uneven subdivision of foreshortened spaces
Ellipses/Cylinders/Cones etc in perspective in various orientations
Rotation and Tilt
Hinges
Reflections in perspective
Shadows in perspective
Slopes (sloped roads actually create multiple different vanishing points for objects along it)

Drawing is not 3d modeling.
You need to be able to switch between a 3d conception of the form and 2d conceptions of shapes, between line drawing of contours and mass drawing of value masses, freely based on the nature and orientation of the subject.
You dont need to 3d construct a flower, that just makes it look stiff and mechanical.
You can draw a flower by copying its 2d contours and it will still look 3d, but it will look much more expressive
because its easier to make beautiful curves when you're thinking in 2d, than trying to draw curves through 3d space inside your cube.

Construction is just one tool in your toolkit as an artist. You use it when its the most effective tool.

A good critique, especially about building intuitive perspective skills, but it kinda fell a little flat when you got to the construction part. You didn’t really thoroughly explain what was wrong with his teaching/approach to construction or give a superior alternative to learn constructive drawing.
I don’t think you really made a good argument as to why you shouldn’t do DAB to learn construction, only that construction alone isn’t the be-all end-all. So I’m not convinced of DAB being bad with respect to construction per se.
All you said was that understanding how to make pleasing graphic 2d shapes is also important, and just understanding volume and construction alone is not enough to make appealing art. Well that's fair, I wasn't really trying to say that you shouldn't do draw a box to learn construction
I was saying that if you do draw a box, you may come away with the wrong impression of "how to draw", you might come away thinking that drawing is about construction, rather than construction just being a tool.
I don't actually know if draw a box is a good way to learn construction specifically, just that it's certainly a bad way to "learn how to draw" overall, which is what it markets itself as

Now that I think about it, in all the books I've read, construction is never really given specific treatment, there's just the general idea that you work from the most general shapes and forms of a subject down to the more specific ones
I've read a lot of books from different kinds of people and artists , spanning from the 1800s to modern publications.
And now that I think about it, literally none of them have a chapter on "construction", other than books about drawing mechanical things like vehicles. "Technical drawing" I guess

I'm not suggesting any particular conclusion be drawn from this, just pointing out the anomaly.

The single best standalone book I've seen on the topic is Harold speeds "The practice and science of drawing" particularly the chapters on Rythm or line and Rythm of mass.
It's a very difficult thing to summarize without sounding like ur talking bullshit.
It's basically about the concepts of unity and variety being the core of appeal.
That their is a purely abstract level on which the relationships of Pictorial elements can be engaging or boring, completely separate from the perceived meanings of the symbols.

Has lots of little food for thought that drives the concepts home, like the idea that the most aesthetically appealing curve is an egg shape in which the rate of curvature changes at every point, the maximum amount of variance a symmetrical figure can have without breaking its continuity

It's the one thing that genuinely makes you improve 10x faster than anyone else. Do not fall into the trap of only drawing from life / masters and never doing any memory sketches.

Guptill talks about it in his pen and ink book, many times. Read about it there. It's also talked about in the David Finch study streams, and the Krenz Cushart lectures
