General dedicated to posting and discussing art of either:
1. Manmade objects, vehicles, tool, weapons etc. (of any kind and any historical era, as long as they fall in the ballpark of "technology") and fictional derivatives of such
2. Objects, vehicles, creatures etc. that aesthetically fall into the visual space of mecha/robot/artificial/cybernetics etc. regardless of level of realism.
Helpful to mention the level of realism, if any, you are taking into account in the art.

I think drawing whatever you feel like allow you to focus the most is probably best, redrawing the same subject over a whole study session is only worth it if you either, wish to learn about it as a whole (like mixing learning about guns with art grind), or if you wanna stretch your visualisation, rotating an object in your mind and getting it accurately. I fail that part too oftentimes.

Sure thing anon, I'll try to sum it up, but note I don't like blind-leanding-the-blind situations. I'm not a teacher nor anything better than a 1-year-in-beg.
The tldr is to, get yourself a prespective resource you trust, ideally multiple. Personally I used Scott, and also, in big part, deduced a lot of with Blender cubes & cameras, but I don't know if I'd recomand that. I do recomand using blender to ref tho. After you've brushed trough all the hard rules of persepctive, just start to apply. Apply to anything you ever liked. Furniture, buildings, objects, vehicles, weapons, mechs, etc. etc. Anything with solid shapes (as opposed to things such as cloth or soft materials, hair, etc.). Decide on an object, look at the refs, sketch them, do whatever you want, then try to draw the shape out of memory from any angle you want. Here you can use blender to pose a simple cuboid to get an ideea of the angle (or more if you need). There's no problem with doing more studies from ref or less, the point is to, get the shapes into your head, then from your head onto the paper. Exercise both, especially the latter. Frankly that's all i've been doing for the past, you can count about 150 illustrations of this, for about a year. Hope it helps.

This looks pretty consistent, all of it. Something that I find interesting is how all those smaller shapes don't distract of the main subject, do you have any tips in how to control all the clutter without making it hard for yourself not to destroy or lose the integrity of the parts that make the whole object? When I'm doing shape studies I tend to notice my eye gets lost on all the noise of the ref and I struggle to filter what should be omitted and when I try to recreate it I either get proportions off or something ends up not fitting in or the sum of parts just looks disjointed.

Assuming you're doing this trad, what kind of process do you have or what are you thinking/focusing while making your drawing? Do you think through the form visualizing some invisible perspective grid or are you more about sticking 100% to the exact angle of each and every line?

You don't need to answer all of this, but knowing a general mindset of how you come to approach these studies would be nice, thanks in advance.

>all those smaller shapes don't distract of the main subject, do you have any tips in how to control all the clutter without making it hard for yourself not to destroy or lose the integrity of the parts that make the whole object?
I think it's probably most important to find a way to process the geometry that you can do consistently. It depends on what feels natural to you, forcing anything else would probably be inneficient. I try to rememeber the a mix of the 3d topology of the important shapes, and a few big shapes as proportionate landmarks. (Like saying, for the camera, thinking of the size and proportions of cuboid the stand would fit in. Then, thinking of the same for the body of the camera, then the 2 film rolls, etc. and, besides that, trying to remember the 3d form of things such as the stand, etc. The 2nd part is easier personally, proportions in perspective are harder than 3d form to me.)
> When I'm doing shape studies I tend to notice my eye gets lost on all the noise of the ref
Happens to me too, a lot in general for most i assume. Just gotta take it slower and make your own landmarks/ shapes in your head to break it down into, and place the details inside, as opposed to putting each detail next to the other and hoping they line up/fit inside. Having problems with the whole thing being off as, bits not fitting/lining up I think is just milage, the hard surface equivalent of an uncanny looking face due to not getting the proportions right. I think just, more work and skill fixes that. I still have that problem, as well, working on it.
>Assuming you're doing this trad
yeah
>what kind of process do you have or what are you thinking/focusing while making your drawing?
I look at refs of what i wanna draw. I try to make a 3d mental image of it in my mind with good enough form and proportions. I try to draw that out of imagination from random angles. Then I recheck the refs and try to see what's wrong and try again.

wtf? I recently discovered this kind of observation, I called it the 'kim jung gi observation method' I recently tried it, and I had some success with it, but I think I need some time to determine if it really works, it works right? looking at the reference and observing intensely, then looking away, and forming a mental image of the forms, then drawing without looking, then looking to check.
I used to observe normally, looking at the reference and drawing at the same time.

Yes I think it's most reasonable to give yourself a window of trying it out to learn to do it consistently and then see if you think you're learning something out of it.

I used to do some basic sketching before painting, but realized it was kind of pointless. Notice how the first big brush strokes make up the general shape of the subject. When painting you literally think in shapes instead of lines, if that makes sense.

If I may, I'd like to offer some critique... Perspective is really warped on this, can't make out the leg on the left, and the mech loses definition towards the head. The area with the arm and the gun is alright but overall the figure doesn't seem 'grounded'. Needs better lighting and a cast shadow on the on the ground to help with that.

The foreground is amazing but the mechs in the corners are unfortunately very obviously squished down to fit the size of the page. It's a letdown because the car and front leg are so fucking strong. If you had more space or planned better this would've been 10/10.

>> No.6964807

>>6963154
Thanks for the heads up anon. Your crit is completely correct, cause that's exact what i did. I started with the girl and the car, then the right mech starting with the leg, but then i realised i don't have enough space on the page and had to ruin the rest of the pic. Ended up meh, but even then i'm ok with it given i'd rather move on and remake the pic another time. Think I'll make a reminder for 3rd of december 2024 to try again, same subject matter, see what i can do in 1 more year. Anyways, 1-day-finished-a-sketchbook break is over, be back tommorow with new art.

I dont want this thread to die so I am posting this WIP. But I have a question, like I tried to attempt this by eyeballing it (my ref right next to my draw panel) but my angles were very very off so I ended up just blocking around the actual ref. But how do I get better at getting the right overall shape in the right angle?
What I am doing now (knowing that my overall shape was correct) was using that as a basis for all my other existing lines and where they should fall under. Though I checked now, its still off.

it's a good mindset, keep going. Just gotta do it more, hopefully focus more. In your drawing the care is showing too much of the hood and roof as if seen from a higher angle while the ref is dead on.

Wait whats blender ref? Huh? Its what I kinda been doing, though I had my ref side by side but I compare lines and distances from my existing structure, going back and forth on checking if my lines and angles are right or wrong when I compare to my ref.
>>7004981
I ended up doing that one until I started doing the background when I realized my perspective was pretty wrong, and started checking more against my ref more often and comparing distances between known points I can base it off of.
I might add a character sticking their head out the drivers window but I think I am gonna leave this one as it is. I would like to go back and add the stickers and color to it though.

Any crit is nice!!

Hello mechabros, another /beg/ here.
I started dipping my toes into H2D and I got to admit that I really like the perspective stuff, it's fun to practice, and pretty eye opening.
Will practicing and learning with H2D enable me to do these things freehand someday? Or is this complex construction dependendant on a ruler?
Regardless of using H2D or not, does the process of learning perspective drawing like that also improve your ability to draw tanks, mecha and machinery "intuitively" (obviously not as precise as if I use intricate construction lines)?

>Will practicing and learning with H2D enable me to do these things freehand someday
Depends on how much you practice and how high your standards are, i suppose. I do my stuff freehand, and there's plenty of mistakes. Find your own middle point between freehand and construction, but there's definitely potential to not use it.(applies to >>7067535's question too)
>Regardless of using H2D or not, does the process of learning perspective drawing like that also improve your ability to draw tanks, mecha and machinery "intuitively" (obviously not as precise as if I use intricate construction lines)
Probably. It helps to draw the actual things themselves, but being better at perspective makes drawing them easier, so you have more headspace to think about hte design/"anatomy" of the subject matter, and less about how to draw the boxes that make it up

Oh, I don't think it's so bad.
Maybe you are trying to see something that isn't there? A lot of people think these robots are cool, it's not for everyone.
Do you like drawing mechanical things yourself? Maybe not robots but other things?

Bomp
Still struggling a great deal with ellipses, they just never look quite right.
Would love to hear some tips or tricks on circles in perspective.

Neat values, hope you post a painting of cars at some point. Also regarding elipses, you can use the trick Scott mentions (How to Draw book) of:
The line perpendicular to the cylinder in 3d space, like the line of symetry of the disc, is the small axis of symetry of the elipses on paper
