I have lived my whole life "drawing" that way. When I say I would draw as a kid, this is what I mean. And it's precisely why I can't draw for shit now, I just know that isn't the way to learn. Not saying it isn't helpful experience to have, but doing just that alone won't allow me to draw what's in my head, draw what I want on my own, or even conjure something in my head to begin with.

It's unfortunate, learning a language is straight forward. Getting better at a game competitively is straight forward. Learning thing like that, all it takes is constant repetition and sinking time. It just isn't that simple with learning to draw, like really learning to draw what it is that you want to draw. Continue your grind for copying other people's art your whole life, you still won't be able to do your own thing. You'll end up just like me.

Yup, you've rediscovered "master studies", which is the historical way to learn drawing. Keep at it for a while until it becomes second nature / too easy, then you can push it further (color, inventing stuff, etc.)

If you've really been at it for about a month, you likely have some potential, so don't hesitate to be hard on yourself.
