How do you study anatomy?
I swear this isn't a pet the dog question. Do you just read and roughly memorize anatomy books? Do you draw and label medical diagrams? Do you copy anatomy for artist illustrations? People say to copy Bridgman but people also say a prerequisite is to learn anatomy.

Most resources for artists will show you the same parts in different angles but it can help to find a 3D model to rotate. If you don't understand something in one resource try another, and if the artist resources aren't detailed enough check medical texts. And possibly physio textbooks to understand the movement better.

I've started reading that How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way book that someone recommended a few days ago. What I should be doing is basically exercising the things they mention for a few days in a row right? who needs bridgeman anymore, we can move on to studying bridgeman-anon
i think you have achieved max level in feeling the form my friend
by the way, try placing the white highlights on another layer, and play with their colorization. you have a neutral-ish bg, warm sketch, and white highlights. relative to the rest the highlights therefore are cold-ish. my guess is, if you make them some sort of very bright yellow, orange they might look better. (just my guess, maybe its some entirely different color ie leaning into cold intentionally)
not because you are fucking up in their application, but because mixing color temperature carelessly creates a "muddy" feeling.

>shadows in the background would look better if they were more purple and less grey
Not necessarily. They are too gray, but you could either go with a shot more of red-orange to fit the general feel of the image or with purple to give a bit more contrast. The glow of her cup was a good idea, gives a good accent to what you want the audience to look at.
If I were to add anything, I would try to tone down the desaturation of the background by a minimal amount. A smidgen of contrast more for the hair and skin where the light ain't hitting. So to say, make the glow feel special. The overall feel of the image is good, but imo you need to push it just a bit more.
The only thing that looks weird is the black mass below her arm with the R. I cannot understand what it is supposed to be. Bag?

>>6788336
Fuck the haters. The struggle to greatness is unreal and every step is more than they would dare.
It looks like good weebshit for better and for worse. Next time try to lean a bit harder on the angles of the lips.

>>6788304
Your final outlines look a tad sharp and edgy imo. You lose the good feel of the blobby form you had when you crystalize to polyhedron outline. For instance, hair and hips feel flatter and and simpler than the prior attempts because they are too straight.

>>6788348
If you are gonna go with flat colors, make sure you character is casting a similar amount of shadow to the background. Right now she looks plopped on the bed and somewhat outside of it. Nex time try to add 2 tiers of shadow for the person just like you did for the background. "Just draw better" is also a valid suggestion, but shit takes 25 years.

the individual features are definitely not symbol drawn, but their placement inside the face is still disconnected like you would find in symbol drawn portraits.
the lips are accurate, but the bulging form underneath the lips continues past the red-lip-part and curves down on either side (the mouth bulge muzzle)
they eyes are accurate, but the space between upper eyelid and eyebrows is an actual feature of the face, a plane in 3d
the proportions are alright wherever you do measure, but for example the eye-cheeck-profile connection is lacking. the eye is recessed and forms a dip in the outline of her right (our left) side of the face. bordered on top by the brow ridge and on the bottom by her cute puffy cheek (same goes for the dip between cheek and chin)
the nose is accurate
the weird cropping of the ref makes it hard to pull it off in your defense

so no you are not symbol drawing technically
whatever you accomplished by piecing together lines into coherent facial features, you now have to do by piecing together facial features into a coherent face

you are on the right path anon. keep up the great work!

>>6788348
its cute as fuck but there is a lot wrong on many levels
if you are creating a finished picture my advice would be to not necessarily look for every possible fuck-up and laboriously fix and rework it. finished pictures are to be completed and enjoyed despite their flaws. unless you are doing a commission and need to spot as many big mistakes before delivering of course

the biggest "easy" to solve issue i see is that she feels disconnected from the bg. add shading on her, around her, casting from her onto the bed

This was shown in one of the old /ic/ stickies, what you're looking for in a picture when copying are lines and shapes, not "things"
Don't try to draw "lips" (a symbol), look at the lines and draw those, even and ESPECIALLY shadows need to be treated with this principle, everything is a shadow after all so don't just put down blotches for shadows, you need to study the shadow outline

Is your goal to stylize them? Yeah, still symbol drawing. Look at it in terms of values. For example, there is no hard line outlining the nose. The only dark shape is the cast shadow beneath. Think like you are painting shades with a pencil rather than drawing lines of features. That’s the transition away from “symbol drawing”. And don’t just draw a hundred faces because. You need to practice applying the right technique.

Yeah, heads are a weakness for me still.

I think some of the issue is I did much less underlying construction than I usually do — building from the inside out — in an attempt to try a (slightly) more direct approach to the lines and shapes. I’m not at that level yet.

It sounds like the biggest problem is composition issues, in the way I designed the forms making up the figure. I wanted a counter to the hard, angular blockiness of Bridgman, and went too far into the softness with no contrasting hardness. I really appreciate the detailed feedback, this is a big help. Thank you very much!

Ha. I’ve actually considered drawing from your sketches. Something about especially the thighs and torso is very appealing to me.
>i think you have achieved max level in feeling the form my friend
Th-thanks

Your new, more direct approach to line work is looking pretty good. It looks like subtle refinements like line weight, flow, etc. would be easy enough to add in as an iteration of polish to existing, already-good lines. It’s pretty cool.

I think you’re more used to depicting form with value than with line. Your red blobs are succulent little morsels of 3D appeal, and your new approach is just shy of that level. Maybe line-only organic forms would help? Then again, you did JUST start this method. Maybe you’ll eventually hybridize them, idk. Looks good, though

Yeah I'm the witch guy.
I was also that faggot who posted the dragon that everybody seemed to like a while back too. Not sure what you mean by the hair or dress though. People are telling me it looks fine so if you can show me a way to make it look better then I'm all for it. I kinda like the boots as well, but again, this might be a personal preference difference that I'd have to see to really make a decision on.

That's what you think, but you forget that /int/ people are supposedly lumped here too. /asg/ is too caught up in the Krenz notes I shared with them a while back and doing direct copies to really have anything useful to say. Most of those guys are at the same level as the beg threads anyways, and the draw threads basically are the same as well. There's a couple decent people there, but I haven't had much luck extracting anything useful out of them yet. Maybe I'll try again...

Congratulations Pawell, you have finally understood perspective....until you realize most of the stuff you practiced wont matter unless you're designing complicated hard surface stuff(in which case it's more practical to use Box modeling 3D). Basically you've learned the abstract theories but you haven't truly gotten a "feeling" for it when applied to common subjects like figures or background designs. A lot of what you really needed to know was just being able to create grids in 1pt, 2pt and 3pt and being able to measure and duplicate things quickly and then eyeballing the rest.

You should try a grid drawing. The only way you’re going to get a good replication is by going for it. Do all the fine measurements and everything and go all the way. Almost like you are tracing from a distance. Until you go for that, you won’t understand why there’s a gap between your sketches right now and the reference, and what it takes achieve resemblance.

My fellow men! I must say that it is great disappointment to see you capturing the richness of this world through dull and cheap graphite slop. I regret to say, such choices once again confirm that class and fine taste has never been a matter of money, but of character.

I don't think you can add a background after you draw a floating character in white space, it's just not possible, you have to preplan how the character is supposed to interact with a background
It's like adding gesture after you already drew a stiff figure, it can't be done

The composition makes it look like it's a snuff film
It looks like an adult set up the camera, because it's high up, but it's not pointed at the bed or at her like a pervert would do, it's just mounted well enough that the general area of interest is visible. She's waving to the camera, she seems naive, but not excited like she would be had she been groomed, just curious like "I wonder what we're going to do with the camera". I feel like her sitting on the bed confirms it's something bad that's about to happen. If it were an innocent family home movie she would be walking around or inspecting the room, kids don't have the patience to sit and wait for something unless they're told to, and why would her father tell her to do that for a home movie? The lighting and colors give an eery feeling to it, just flat lifeless lighting.

this. even construction is just simply knowing what a box, bean, and cylinder looks from every angle, and then combining that. And then even after that, for complex shapes like human anatomy, you need to do thousands of more hours of figure drawing to know the true shape anatomy will take from every angle

The point of construction knowledge is just to act like a table of contents that helps organize what you see

Jesus. You’re really good. Appeal, character design, faces—all that’s left is nit-picking minor details.

Top left looks like she’s shooting flame instead of peering a fire doggie.
Top right, the pattern on her dress doesn’t follow the form as it wraps around her, so it completely flattens out. Compare the pattern around the hem of her dress in top right to bottom left. The cast shadow on top right’s legs flattens them out as well. The laces on top right’s boot face towards the camera (like in bottom left) when they should probably be in perspective closer to bottom right’s laces.
Top right, the fabric should be soaked and heavy, clinging wetly to her body. The hem of her skirt shouldn’t be flaring out all carefree like that.
>>6788354
In the center standing pose, she’s holding her arms like Ted Cruz, lol. Not that it’s incorrect, just a little stiff and awkward. Which is fine for a character sheet, but then her feet aren’t as stiff. Btw her right (our left) foot looks a little bit more like a left foot, due to the outward sweep of the toe box on her boot.
The back view should probably have a clearer separation between the body and sleeve of her dress. Also, the pattern of her dress ignores the perspective distortion and overlap of the fabric as it wraps around her.
>>6788358

for a more serious feedback though, you drew easter island-esque face comapred to her more round and soft featured face because you are still in the "internalizing structure"phase where you are still drawing things not based on what you see, but based on the formula you practise

try to modify the formula you see in construction examples to fit exactly what you see, even if first you draw a gesture (yes a gesture of a face, you can do a gesture or quick sketch if you will, of anything) then you try to draw a modified version of that formula for construction that fits the exact shape in fornt of you

this vid is a good example on using these construction formulas as a base of knowledge but then modifying them to fit what you want https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np-liwtz81Q&ab_channel=TimMcburnie-TheDrawingCodex

this is the next step in the process of not needing so much construction like you see more advanced artists do, the hard as fuck inbetween step

Oh, good! I’m glad you like it.
Idk what you’re talking about, Anon. Those are pretty decent forms, good little boxes, and some really good lips, especially the dude with the cigarette. I can tell you’re developing a decent sense of form. It looks like you’re trying to construct figures from imagination. With foreshortening! in perspective! That shit’s RIDICULOUSLY hard, especially if you don’t already draw near-perfect figures from reference. I wouldn’t worry about it. You still want to practice inventing gestures, of course, but just for fun to see how far you get/if you can even do it.

You might be burning out on studies. Try drawing stuff for the hell of it, random memes, plump cameltoes, sea creatures, mecha, etc. Whatever you think would be fun, without worrying about what others would think or that it has to be good or that you have to “learn” something. Just fuck around and have fun with your pencil. Even if you draw ignoble things, as long as you’re enjoying yourself, it doesn’t matter. If you’ve been bashing your head against a particular wall, spend less time on that specific study and do other stuff instead for a bit. Drawing purely for fun, copying anime, drawing puppies, designing Batman gadgets, learning about painting or something completely different. If you see something cool and feel inspired, just do that without worrying about having to force yourself to “draw the right thing.”

Or do the same studies, but make it more fun for yourself. Like if you’re studying organic forms, draw boobs from different angles and levels of squish. Or UFOs. If you’re trying to rotate boxes, rotate cartoony jeeps or guns instead. If you’re studying Bridgman, make his figures into cat girls. If you’re studying perspective, make little cityscapes for Godzilla to fuck up. Or for a giantess to crush. whatever, I don’t judge. And neither should you! Have a little mercy on yourself lol.

it looks like you focus on the outlines whereas you should be thinking of the volumes of body parts and only pay attention to the outlines when placing the final lines

i guarantee you i am not putting in more effort than you. in fact you might be working harder than me when doing a figure drawing

it is only partially about skill and experience, a large part of the outcome of your figures is how you approach them

i identify the biggest, most important (in my opinion and taste) forms / volumes / shapes / whatever you want to call it
and just place them roughly where they are supposed to go

from then on, their illusion of 3d space and overlap helps me place more accurate marks. and all of those marks automatically inherit all the small details that give an impression of a coherent figure

they way it seems you approach drawing is taking on a difficult challenge. make it easier for yourself. take care of the gesture, the 3d form and the final look in deliberate mindsets. right now you are putting all the burden on drawing the outlines

note how my first stage "gesture" is horrible, but at that moment it was enough to place the 3d forms
and the 3d forms are not accurate to anatomy, just enough to design (consciously! not fearfully guessing) where i want to place lines

consider picking easier poses and fatter women (lel) if not in general then perhaps as warmups

in any case, ganbatte anon!

Hello beg. I'm drawing little these days since I'm working around the farm and garden and on another project (quest). I did the eye exercise and copied some eyes from the book. Yesterday I drew the apple core and pepper drawing guy.

I’d say honestly to look into Loomis heads, because your features are poorly placed proportion wise, the drawing is very flat, and you need to work on how you draw the features. As for the flatness in particular, it’s mostly because you shaded the face but didn’t establish the forms or shape of the face very well. I think a bit of perspective knowledge would also be useful here, which also prevents flatness

Thank you for the example and detailed description of your process. I actually gesture the line of action first. Then I just mark the landmarks and very rough outline that I later refine.
I'll be honest, I don't really comprehend the "volumes" in your example yet, but I just finished Eviston's "figure drawing - gesture" course and I will now move on to his "figure drawing - volume and structure", which will hopefully clear things out.

It looks good. I think the white highlighting on the trunk (mainly the v shaped highlight at the top of the trunk nearest the branches, and the two straight lines of white on the bottom right quadrant of the trunk) look a little bit weird in places. I think it's overall very nice. I like how the Celtic knot thing at the base is a little imperfect and organic so it looks like maybe a tree really could grow like that, rather than being a blatant clipart design. I think it's interesting that the highlighting on the trunk is trying to give the trunk more 3D form, but the entire rest of the tree is more of a graphic 2D design. You might want to design the highlights such that they're more deliberately flat and "graphic 2D design" looking, as an experiment. I don't have specific advice on doing that, though. I think the main branch to the right has slightly too stiff a gesture, coming straight out at 90 degrees to the trunk, with no flowy curve like the other limbs.

It looks very cool, anon. You're the guy who's designing a tree of life tattoo, right? Good job!

I guess this isn't particularly interesting, but I've been going back to basics to brush up pn my very core fundamentals. Practicing freehanding basic shapes right now. I always want to rush to the sexy, fun things like figure drawing or coming up with weird creatures, but they're not successful because my construction is bad and my construction is bad because my 3D shapes are no good and my 3D shapes are no good because my basic shapes and lines are so weak. There's also something meditative about cutting the number of things you need to juggle down to just line shape and control of your pencil.

my advice for you is to learn to draw basic forms cleanly, and accurately. Keep your lines clean, and your conception of the forms clear.

What I would do, in your situation, is study either the Vilppu drawing manual or Michael Hampton's figure drawing book. They both teach the same thing. Go through the exercises slowly and diligently, skipping over nothing. The mannequin figure I demonstrated on the right should be the bulk of your practice, going from gesture to structure, over and over and over again. Draw from both reference and imagination, and you should see great improvements.

After several months of this, pick up Bridgman and start copying your favorite artists

Depends, if I'm feeling focused I won't listen to anything but if my mind is elsewhere or there are distractions I'll throw on something ambient or orchestral that's just enough to get the part of my mind that wanders to stay in one place. I can't do podcasts or music with vocals, they occupy too much of my focus and I end up robotically doing the exercises without actually thinking about what I'm doing. Maybe one day when day when I do them to maintain rather than build muscle memory I can split my focus more, but or now I want to get the most out of them.

one arm (forearm looks too long, elbow needs more to it, needs some sort of indiction of transition from wrist to hand),
hand is missing thumb (or some indication she has one), and
feet just need more practice (I hate feet).

Some issues could be fixed with shading (imo), but idk if you are that far along (and I dont think you should rush in like some sort of shading cowboy). Face, titties and tummy (the torso generally) are nice.

Maybe some better indication of the midsection (abs, obliques) might also help. Idk what your reference looks like so maybe that's just how her tummy looks.

thank you for the feedback! i agree, and i feel like i could do with placing considerably less lines altogether.. i picked up the hampton book a couple days ago, and have been reading over the first sections, digesting as much as i can. i’m still trying to get a better grasp of 3D space on a 2D medium, so i’ve been really trying to simplify what i’m drawing as just basic shapes in 3D space. also really trying to work out the size relationships of the different parts of the body, and the books by taco1704 have been helpful by breaking it down with a lot of illustrations, but i feel like just with more practice, it’ll start looking closer to what i envision, because despite it being incredibly amateur, i feel like i’m at least on the right path.

again thanks (:

Maybe moving her pubic bone/pussy/crotch/mons over further to the left a touch would help? I dunno. It might honestly just be a stylization thing I’m too /beg/ to understand.

Cute. The perspective of her nose/nostrils (and mouth slightly) is a little too shallow and doesn’t match the rest of her face. Compare the angle of the two dots of her nostrils to the angle of the nostrils in the ref.
