Nice figgies everyone. This is currently the most productive thread on /ic/

I got bored with 57-60, they repeated the same pose 8 times from only slightly different angles. I was about to blow my fucking brains out. Also, i was coping too literally from the reference today. Everything is kind of stiff.

Your shapes are very appealing, Tableguy. What was rough about 57-60? they look clean to me.

Tried a few things different on these 4, felt so awkward to start, but started to feel a little better on the last one, but I'll prolly go back to my normal rough-in pencil, but might keep using the blue for the basic gesture/proportions.

ADDING TO THAT LIST -> THE FUCKING SUPERPOSE BOOKS BLOW FUCKING ASS!! Japanese women with no definition, just blobs of fat and no muscle. Horrible lighting, no visible forms. Super stiff poses. Bad proportions. Flat faces. No places of the face to learn anything from. Just as bad as line of action / quick poses. I will not draw from that book again. >>6798393
It’s just figure drawing. Nothing creative or original being done here. I keep 2 mantras in mind when i do studies.
1) draw what you see not what you know - copy the negative spaces, check all the proportions. Don’t get hung up on the anatomy under the hood. Just focus on the shapes interacting.
2) Draw what you WANT to see not what you see - the reference may not be readable or might not be something you can draw so draw what you would want to be there.
Number 1 is pretty easy, I just discovered Number 2 recently. Someone told me that is what vilppu teaches. I wouldnt know. I never watched any of his videos after wanting to rage quit when i saw him figure drawing.

>>6799120
I use minimal construction when i do studies. I’m almost like a printer now and i go from head to toe. I start with bangs now in the front where the hair parts. Then put in a couple landmarks for the shoulders, then the boobs, then a marker for where the crotch goes. Then i go back around and place vague scribbles where hands, feet or body parts are interacting or crossing over. All the lines i use are in the drawings if you look, i havent been erasing much recently. I can do more tightly timed drawings tomorrow. I have always heard that your 30s drawing is the base for your 1 min which is the base for your 2 min etc etc. So in a way that is kind of like construction

>>6801320
Yeah it’s a contradiction. Like at first you try to draw what you know or what you think you know but you’re not ready for it. So it’s better to jsut draw what you see. But as you progress through your journey you very sparingly draw what you want to see. Then at some level of mastery you jsut draw waht you want all the time because you know how to make it look good.

>>6799120

For this thread I've been using a blue pencil to do the rough ins, helps me with proportions. Then I go over with with a regular pencil.

Oh, another one of this threads
On one hand, I fucking hate tableguy's threads where it's just a promo for his stuff and he does this blatantly, +some engagement
It's a trend that you can find on twitter, discord, instagram
>Here's my art. Also, what do you guys think about X? Let's do X.
And then everyone starts posting X, but the guy really doesn't care about your X, it's just added pole, for the spearhead of his work.
This encourages avatarfagging and I fucking hate guts internet personalities, and I sure as fucking hell don't want to see them on fucking 4chan of all places, as this goes against the core system of this place
On the other hand, people do catch up on the threads and draw more, and that's a good thing
But definitely not worth it, in my opinion.
I rather have low engagement and less shills, than more shills and more engagement. I have discord, twitter, instagram, reddit for that.

First I sketch with Smooth Pencil, then I increase the brush size and block in the shadow. Then to turn the form, I use the Grainy Soften smudge brush. For the longer figures, I use Charcoal Pencil for the darker lines and the core shadow. Then I lower the flow to render the more subtle stuff. Also sometimes erasing with the same brush (hold the ` key).

His videos have a lot of good tips too.

in general it's about draftmanship and control over the tools you use. i've only used the soft round brush for pic related having both opacity, density and also size set to pressure so i have the most amount of control of the lines i put down. more concretely for brush economy and blending: it's all built up, you can see in the 1st step after the lines that the core shadow varies in size and darkness, that doesnt happen in one single stroke, instead i build it up changing the brush size and pressing accordingly to best describe de core shadow, same with the area in shadow and the lit area with the mid tones, it's all built up to describe the form being affected by light and throught the control you have over your tool and with enough practice you can achieve pretty nice results, keep at it

That's presonal taste so I wouldn't know sorry
You calves and forearms are thicker than normal.
Personally I like it, nice and stocky.
Your backs need a bit more fat to them, it might work on males but females are more flowy imo
But again this might be taste.

Thanks a lot Anon, I'll take that into consideration since I agree with most of that. The leg on the drawing you redlined reads especially better that way. Just undecided on backs since I haven't studied them enough to have any particular taste on the matter.
>Any tips how you got top where you are?
I've honestly done a lot of things and fallen into all kinds of drills and routines but over the last few years but it almost always comes down to:
1. Study from reference
2. Apply to imaginative work (alternatively, redraw from memory if you find yourself struggling)

Like for example when I get home from life drawing I always try to draw at least some of the poses from memory, or just use anatomy/light I've observed in imaginative stuff.

This is obviously not necessary to do but I really enjoy drawing from imagination. Also comes at the cost of my finished work being pretty bad since I don't have much experience with finishing stuff or rendering anything but plaster casts and figures in greyscale.

You should probably check silverstar1243 on instagram out, her sketches are god tier.

Hey guys. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question
But is gesture really THAT important?

I've been working through hampton and doing his gesture is really busting my balls.
I just want to start grinding figures already

Maybe I'm too stupid for gesture but how is it going to help me draw complete figures?
I know it helps with breaking out of stiff poses and portraying movement and all of that.

Do I have to actually stick through it or is there a different book that doesn't involve gesture? because I might be a tad too stupid for that

I figure you guys would be the right people to ask.

Maybe you should just take some time to learn more about anatomy before tackling gesture, because right now your gestures aren't really capturing the angle at which the figures are at.

Once you learn to draw the human body a bit more then I think it will help you greatly with your gestures.

I think you need to stop this quick study shit and apply yourself more because you can easily end up staying at this skill level for years with this kind of mental masturbation. What youre doing right now is largely useless and mindless. If its fun then go for it. But if you want to get better it will take some brain power. Pick one to three poses and repeat them over and over till they look somewhat okay. Take some time but dont spend ages on it, one hour max. Trust me its so much more satisfying. GL

Thank you for the wake up advice. Of course I'd like to get better. I'll follow what you said and try post some more results. When you mean repeat the pose do you mean in all fields? (silhouette, gesture, anatomy, form, shadow, line, etc etc) or should I specify into one field more than the other? Sorry if the question is a little dumb

>> No.6835380

>>6835317
Line and gesture arent something to practice in isolation ever in my opinion. You pracitce that stuff passively no matter what you draw. Find drawings you like and try to be like that using your own brain. All the bs online course exercises dont work and are made to make students feel like they are getting better, but they are at the EXACT. SAME. SKILL. LEVEL. Good luck and have fun, seriously.

Depends on what your end goal is. Stylized, realistic, cartoony, etc. For legs I usually think of them as tapered tubes. A little bit of anatomy knowledge will also go a long way. A few key muscles and their insertion points is usually enough to get an idea of the masses. If I'm stuck on a certain body part, I'll usually just grind out a bunch of those parts in isolation. Iteration is also a good way to get better at something like the other anon said. draw it once, find what's wrong, don't fix the one you just did, do another one to the side. Do that till it looks decent. Keep it up!

How do you stop putting so much value in your drawings? Like when I try to draw I tend to get discouraged if I don't perform as good as I think I should.

>>6841836
> Do you guys think there's a huge difference working from photos vs life?
It’s huge, it’s insane. Life drawing is like 100x difficulty of photos. There is no framing, no cropping, potentially poor lighting, singular viewing angle. Drawing from life is hard mode. You have to make the best with what you are served. I have this story of going to these 3hr live figure drawing classes and I was easily the worst person there. Like permabeg tier drawing level by comparison. Everyone in that class was like 50+ yr old vilppus. I would turn over my drawings during the breaks out of embarrassment. They had been going to the same live figure class every week for 30 years.

> Also, do you ever do figures from imagination, to test what you learned?
In my opinion this is also an entirely different skill set. It’s like posing a doll. I end up having to use construction and build the figure. When i do figure drawings from reference i just kind of start at the head and go down. But from imagination is like exercising a different part of the brain. The references help make you less afraid of tackling a hard angle because you know you have done it before. Thats pretty much it.

>>6843890
All drawings are worthless, thats why they are made on cheap copy paper. Just finish it so you can move on. Ive been stuck in sketch hell for a year. It feels bad. I am going to try to make more finished pieces for the rest of the year.

>These are hot. I like the way you draw faces
Really? It makes me happy that someone likes them.
>but it's not always well constructed,
Faces or bodies overall? Anything in particular?
>and your anatomy knowledge could use some brushing up.
I'm currently studying leg muscles, anatomy is such a giant thing I probably will spend my entire life getting better at it.
>Otherwise, great work, glad you're studying Vilppu
Vilppu is my favourite teacher, I always come back to his books and videos. I studied Hampton, Huston, Morpho, but Vilppu is such a great person, his words contain a lot of wisdom, even after coming back to his old videos I always find something new or something I couldn't understand before.
Thanks!

Get there early so you get a good seat (somewhere in the middle). Don't get too caught up in details in shorter poses.

Honestly I'm not sure if there are any benefits of going to life drawing sessions. Studying from photos is way easier and you can find poses that are hard to maintain.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid as question...
But what is the best way to learn figure drawing?

Well...Maybe not the best but the one you guys would recommend?

I'm going through vilppu right now but... I'm starting to get second thoughts...

I figure asking here is better than asking on beg or asg

Vilppu is the best teacher in my opinion but he's not really beginner friendly. Check out Hampton or Huston, they might be easier to understand.

They actually do look like a mix of Proko and Hampton. Arguably more Proko but anyway.

looks pretty good, you might want to drill some head angle studies, especially the angles where the head is tilted back. If you want to stay with the anime style, I've learned alot from Hide Channel on youtube. you can auto-translate, but I found it mostly helpful to just copy what he's doing. Slow down the playback speed till the point you can follow along.
His finished work isn't what I'm trying to achieve, but his breakdowns really helped me.

>>6861644
What the other anon said, whichever method you choose, try to apply what you learn to your photo studies.

Haha thanks, my ultimate goal is semi realism and anime. Miura is my favourite artist which is probably obvious. I will save the videos regardless(but most of the tutorials use the Loomis method but anyway).

You might find something like this helpful:

you can just rotate it to the angle you want to study :)

you have a habit of drawing very short legs. i dunno if you've ever watched huston's full video lectures but he recommends always erring on making the legs too long, and drawing them off of the page if necessary

Yeah I've been meaning to address that. Tried to focus on the legs this session. Haven't gone through Huston's courses yet but I remember him saying that on a youtube videos. It's true, longer legs look better.
