What are your thoughts on Bryan Lee O'Malley's art? The creator of Scott Pilgrim

Are there any anime-influenced western art styles that are actually appealing without dumbing down things or feeling like a bootleg? The only ones I can think off are probably thr Shantae games and Radiant

It's alright for an appealing cartoon style but some panels in that comic are ROUGH. I would like to see him push himself a bit more to develop more interesting illustrative works. His larger illustrations constantly have the problem where the characters look slapped onto a background and not actually within them.

I don't think I've ever seen O'Malley draw in a style other than the usual SP. I've also noticed that he uses no construction when drawing even when it's a big piece. Not that it's a bad thing.

Now it's just retarded and gay, because women want to be a dumb whore that everyone fights over for no reason

This is from a book called Seconds. It was written after SP.
I don’t think he needs construction for his figures but might help with integrating them more into scenes when doing larger pieces.

It's not the best thing since sliced bread, but it's pretty competent and reading the comic was effortless. Things flowed nicely, which is the most important trait a comic artist must be able to pull off.

The question is: why is this on /ic/?
What do you expect to accomplish with this thread and how is this going to affect your drawing?

Post something /ic/-related or fuck off back to /co/ where you can hear all the goblins saying their radical opinions on a cartoon's plot.

Also, the Chink girl was the best option, but it wouldn't have generated the plot, so...

I could technically report this thread, but I'm instead giving OP some insight.

Instead of being a lazy faggot who just asks "OPINIONS??", he should give /ic/ some directions, explain what he wants to know about the art, this kind of discussion has zero purpose without a lens through which it should be looked.

People forget how beloved and influential his work was at one point - like Hewlett's work, at one point everyone was trying to copy O'Malley... Actually, I wonder if the dog-shit "calarts style" that everyone harps on wasn't partly because of O'Malley's influence?... Not a criticism against him though, he can't control other talentless idiots.

It suffers from same-face, and his characters can be hard to tell apart without colour, but it's still full of charm, and it's immediately recognisable as his work (or was anyway).

>>6786837
Fairly fun comic about a dude in love with a girl who has 7 evil ex-boyfriends he must fight to win over. It's also full of relationship and angsty self-reflective drama, but it's well written with endearing characters and some comedy that lands well - though the "final boss" and his encounter are really anti-climatic.

It's the kind of stuff teenagers would adore, but still a fun read as an adult if you give it the leeway. I need to give seconds a read sometime.

A Canadian comic made around 20 years ago about a 20 something named Scott who pines for a girl he just randomly met named Ramona Flowers. However, before they can be together, Scott must fight and kill her 7 evil exes (one of them is a women btw).

Very fun comic with a surprising amount of nuance, emotional intelligent heart and a good message im not sure i want to spoil.

The og graphic novels are a fun read. The artsyle is manga influenced but is distinctive and intresring enough on its own to feel unique.

The movie is very good as well!

I recommend both if you ever have time to kill

The movie was hardly even that popular, in fact, wasn't it a flop? It might be a cult-favourite, but women barely give a shit about the underground so that doesn't mean anything.
Anyway, women were going in this direction culturally anyway, it's just funny to say women are so shallow that they based they're entire lives off of a fictional character like Ramona Flowers.

>>6787004
I actually remember when O'Malley posted that art, and when someone pointed that out he couldn't unsee it. So no, just a mistake on his part (or him playing along with the joke).

Because its just a funny story featuring characters you hate that you like, could possibly see a little bit of yourself in, but not necessarily root for. This isn't directed at you but I wish people in general would slide the stick out of their asses and learn to enjoy things without attaching their own current year culture war bullshit or their personal emotional turmoil about women, men, etc into a goofy comic made for its time. Or anything for that matter.
