**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You’re drawing without any purpose. Draw a scene with intention. You have a solid understanding of fundamentals and I can see that you were applying perspective with this drawing.

Do more extreme poses that make you happy to see something. Ask why you want to draw instead of just using an AI to look at something.

It's weird, It feels awful to draw

Original poster here. Thank you for posting these. This was really educational, though I intentionally drew Flandre's face to be a little plump and rotund because that's just how I draw children/lolis. I was never one to draw sharper edges on anime-style faces. I also wanted the eyes to be really big and eye catching like she's staring right into your soul. Simple, round, childlike features but with the creepy, piercing eyes of a vampire was my goal for her. I do however appreciate these touches, same with Mami's sleeve and Flandre's wing crystals.

Basically: I was watching the video by Krenz that is in the OP of the thread, and he mentioned the importance of being able to rotate shapes in your mind, and also how to properly shade your characters. He used a picture of a figurine for an example.
So I thought to myself why not kill two birds with one stone and learn both 3D rotation and lighting by practicing on highly detailed 3D models.

>use blender
Oh yeah, I should have thought of that., thanks.

BTW is there some place to get some of the premium models for a discount (like a 100% one)? Though the free ones should be good enough.

I don't think you did too well on these 2 drawings but I think there is good potential here.

I think the first one is supposed to be a semi-chibi style, but I think you aimed for a full SD chibi (but that's just a loose assumption not based on anything).

I don't really know what to say other than that I think you should acknowledge that the proportions are beyond acceptable, it doesn't look quite right.

Yeah, then you're fine but she still looks odd there's something about your linework or something. I don't really know what to say.
The way you draw folds isn't great, oh, I see.

I think you are the Swedish guy, I think your problem is more so in communication and conveying your ideals and that's why everyone calls it hideous.
It's quite crucial to convey to others that you're going for "the extremely precious and niche and utmost SOVLFUL old 2hu and higarashi style."

That's something you should tell people that that's your aspirations like pic related.

>> No.6793450

Also to add to that I think you're an awful person if you're the unfriendly Swede.
Regardless, keep up with the drawing and please CONVEY WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO PEOPLE IF YOU WANT THEM TO STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT YOUR FUCKING STYLE.
YES IT MAKES YOU LOOK PERPETUALLY INCOMPETENT AT DRAWING BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT GOING FOR THE COPY-PASTE SAMEFACE STYLE OR WHATEVER.

In the pastebin and then in the efficient study guide portion, it says
>In order to keep with the effective study ideas of memory testing, spaced repetition, and
variety, you should use this study process to cycle through multiple references at a
time and study them in an order such that you aren’t repeating the same subject
too frequently in a short period of time. This will serve in strengthening your ability to
compare the features of a variety of subjects which in turn will allow you to recall them
easier and be able to mix and alter them in a more skillful way.
So say I wanted to practice the lower torso, I would follow the study method all the way through with a reference specific to that, and then the next day pick something else to study, like drapery folds? Or does it just mean don't use the same identical reference image over and over for whatever you're trying to study?

To tell you the truth, I'm trying to replicate my own artstyle I do digitally in traditional. But since I have much less control over a pencil than I do mouse and editing tools, I'm doing the best I can.
This is what I do:
https://files.catbox.moe/4thzgp.png

I did the chibi drawing first, then I worked over it digitally. The reason I'm doing these traditionally is because I wanna stop being to overreliant of things like 3d models or tracing references to do my artwork (I almost quit because of that). It's been year since I started the figure drawing grind, and It's been pretty enjoyable so far, still a long way to go tho.

Can say for certain that yes, him and zun are my inspirations, their artworks are objetively not great, but people still found ways to love those drawings, and that's the great thing about it. My art may not me the best, but I enjoy doing them nonetheless!

look up sinix's 2 values exercise. "decomposing" or something, there's the beginner and the intermediate version
about the blending, depends on what you want to acheve. for cel-shaded coloring like mignon or houtengeki, use the airbrush itself to blend edges. csp's blending tools (blend, painterly blender, texture blender, etc) are better for blocky rendering like kinta or fkey, imo

All the fun was sucked out of drawing for me once I learned about how deep and complicated it is in reality, it's overwhelming if you are learning on your own. I'll probably never "make it" despite trying for years, I'm just too dumb for it I guess? That being said I'll keep drawing even if my improvements are minimal. Maybe you could just ignore everything about fundamentals, learning resources (and most importantly block /ic/ in your browser, unironically it helped me a lot when I was really down) and just start drawing what you really wanted from the start, or unironically do fanart for attention if you are semi-okay, people will love it regardless of quality and it can help your self esteem a lot

Yeah I know, it's the reason why I almost gave up until some anons encouraged me to keep drawing again. Now I'm slowly trying to get back into it but I'm still kinda nervous after Drawabox,Vilppu,Loomis,Huston kicked my ass over and over again the past couple years

For drawing
1. Accuracy / silhouette drawing
2. Perspective
2. Basic forms in space
3. Objects in space
4. Simplified figure in space
5. Figure drawing / anatomy
6. Costume
7. Figures in a scene in perspective
8. Shape design, appeal, rhythm

being a total beginner to digital and drawing, for the most part, I'm kinda confused by what I'm supposed to do
I've just been drawing for the past month using japanese artists that I like as reference and copying their works and while I feel like I've gotten better at that, I don't really sketch anything I draw, not break it down into basic shapes and my lines are absolutely atrocious and shaky
I guess the question is, what kind of exercises should I be doing alongside this? To improve my lines and stop having my pen slip at the start of strokes too; to learn how to sketch, how heads and faces look like from different point of views, and how to actually break a figure down into shapes
examples would be very helpful, thank you lots

You really have to be in the right mindset to hunker yourself down and be disciplined about learning anything, not just drawing.
As an example(a shit one, I know) I've been self-teaching myself Japanese for 6 months now and I remember the first 3 months being hellish(couldn't understand anything, felt burnt out, skipped days, only did the easy parts). Now, I've got the routine down to a tee.

Also, it's not just about dedicating 100% to learning. Give yourself some free time to draw subjects that you like to draw. During this time, don't worry about the technicalities and whether or not it comes out looking good. Make it fun and expose yourself to the drawing world everyday so it becomes second nature after a while.

Also exercise, eat, and sleep well. It'll help you feel not tired from the get go and with enough energy to absorb information and process that onto your canvas.

Good advice with the last two parts. I feel like /ic/ puts way too much faith into discipline alone while completely ignoring motivation and self care. I find that what helps for me is motivation and having a goal. When I learnt Japanese, I stuck with a few basic rules. A day off is failure. Maintain the same basic structure each day, and practice time management. Failure means you're too old to learn Japanese anymore, and you'll spend the next 60 years being a retard who has to depend on shit translations.

It's hard, but anki made it easy. I could visibly see how many reps I had left each day. I knew if I had done my new cards or not. With each passing hour, the looming dread of the idea that I could wind up not finishing for the day and become a NGMI retard forced me to act, and there were times when I straight up shut down everything and said "right, no more stupid youtube shit until you do half your reps, retard". The longer you enact a routine, the easier it gets. I wake up, I do my reps. Eat lunch? Quick sanity check, did I do my reps yet? About to go to bed, last thing I check before I sleep is if my reps are done.

And the more time passed, the less of my time was spent on reps. These days they take me about 2-3 minutes, while I spend about 4 hours a day just using and enjoying Japanese. Other skills are far harder to learn. I like the idea of music, it's hard to stick to a practice routine. Drawing is similar. There are probably time management tools out there that work well, like a floating timer you can set up and say "right, I'm going to spend X hours on X, and Y hours on Y every day", and then you can just activate it and keep track of how much time you've got left to accomplish your goals.

I have a similar experience. Japanese was my venture into true disciplined self learning, and from the getgo even when I knew virtually nothing it was an easily motivating thing to push through. I think the process and design of Anki is just for me. Now I'm at a level where I can comfortably read just about anything.
That has given me some sort of ego, a confidence boost in learning now, where I feel like I want to develop all the skills I dreamed of developing since I was a kid. And here I am. But drawing is so much different than learning a language. For someone whose daily Anki repetition process worked really well on, what would you say the right course of learning to draw would be? What is the systematical process equivalent for grinding art?

>> No.6805484

>>6805459
Let me preface this by saying I'm a retard who has barely started with art.

I think it's good to split the day between work and play, and spending more than half your time just fucking around and applying new concepts you're learning to art. Play is important for motivation, it's the same reason reading basic shit in Japanese was so beneficial, because you can feel the progress that you don't when you're spending all day drawing circles. What's hard with drawing for me is knowing how long you're spending on it, and that's why I think some kind of timer is a good start, like a press to start one for your desk if you're drawing by hand or some kind of tracker that indicates when you have a drawing application open and active for PC. You just set an amount of time you want to practice each day, and then you stick to it. The way I tend to work is being a lazy piece of shit all the time, so I do a bit here, and a bit there, and shave it down proportionally.

As for organisation, that seems a bit tougher. You don't know what you don't know, after all. Picking and choosing seems good, there's more than one way to skin a cat and if one explanation doesn't make sense, you just move onto another one that does. Maybe over time you can come back and work through the first one with new knowledge and get it. Language is ultimately a much simpler topic, you either know a word or you don't, while art is layers upon layers of complexity and simplification.
