>There is one thing not to do, and that is simply to drift along with the daily routine, making no extra effort. You will soon find yourself middle-aged, having done nothing more than routine jobs, and being little farther along than you were years ago. The extra effort is the difference between the great mass of mediocre artists and the comparatively small group of very good ones.
>And in Art, study can never stop. You will find sketches galore in the studio of the good man, with the paint quite fresh. The mediocre artist's sketches are old and dusty.
>I have seen so many middle-aged artists still hoping, whose samples are frayed at the edges, and thumb-marked with time. Sometimes it has been a matter of years since they sat down and actually did something to give their hopes any promise. They are plodding their lives away at something they hate, and doing nothing about it. These are the men who never seem to have had a chance. The truth is, they never seized a chance.

Yeah, not fizzling out, just frustrated with the Loomis abstraction and have had spotty access to my scanner (and 4chan lately lol)
Might just do to 500 and call it quits and get back to grinding visdev stuff or learning some rendering. The portraiture journey is far from over but not what I want to focus on right now.

I think, as long as you keep grinding figures, you're safe dropping Loomis. I kept improving my head drawing when I drew heads in my figure drawing and master copies. Figure study never stops, and you can't expect to master any one part of it very quickly. Study what you're interested in, and what feels most productive to you at this moment.

What chance? Of the 100 who try, 100 fail. It's just a matter of how long it takes for them to realize how.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this but, I really like your figure studies anon! Been lurking this thread for a bit and I like how much movement is in your figures.
And I'm curious how did you get really good at figure drawing? I'm currently struggling drawing from life. My biggest problem is by how stiff and out of proportioned they are.
Also who/what do you study from your figure drawings? Once again, I really like your studies. Here's a attempt that I did, lots of things are wrong with it, but I've been stuck at this stage of drawing from life for a bit.

I'm honestly really flattered to hear you like my work. Thank you <3

My first big break came when I found Glenn Vilppu. I found out about him when I was reading Craig Mullin's Sijun Posts pdf and he recommended beginners to "Worship Vilppu for the next 5 years, if you wanted to get good. Be in Vilppu's class, or the hospital, and nowhere else :)" those were his words. So obviously, hearing that come from a world class artist, I went and sucked up everything Vilppu had to offer and my work improved tremendously. That was the first time I had ever been so rigorous about feeling form, modelling every plane, and carving into the surfaces with cross contours. I guarantee you that if you do his assignments, you will improve. All of drawing will become clear to you.

My next big break was finding David Finch. I had plateaued for some years, because i was obsessively doing Vilppu, taking it too far. All my figures looked like they were made of legos, very boxy and blobby, but not human. Doing the David Finch roadmap and doing master copies in the way that he recommended made my work natural looking. In the HackMD link in the OP, I have all of David Finch's links listed right at top.

I think, if you just do the David Finch roadmap, you will get all the same benefits from Vilppu, while also keeping your work looking natural. It's especially important to watch all his study streams, because those videos outline the best way to study art, imo. Good luck with your journey, and feel free to keep posting your work here!

Thanks a lot for your input anon! Also your work is one of my favorites on this board to be honest! I went through Vilppu's drawing manual for a bit, some of his wording is pretty complicated, I did study some of the figures he did in that book. Guess I'll go through it carefully now.
Also for his videos and such, which video really helped you with overall figure stuff? Or did pretty much all of them helped?
I've heard of the David Finch roadmap through "copying Bridgman twice" phrase said on here. I'll also start from the beginning from there too and try to work my way up it.
>master copies in the way that he recommended
Is that in one of his vids? Or the roadmap itself? Also how'd you learn anatomy as well? Sorry for all the questions, I'm at the part of drawing where I'm hard stuck on what to do to improve.
But thank you so much for your input anon! I want to put out good figure studies almost everyday like you

janky painting, but I think I'm getting better

>>6790702
NICE I'm jealous of your handling of the brush

>>6790735
No problem!! Vilppu can be hard to study and very abstract, but if you just copy him as he draws, you'll get it. The example drawings in the Vilppu drawing manual are good to copy through too.

The Vilppu videos I studied are here:
https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Fr4y1q7nK/?spm_id_from=333.337.search-card.all.click

I also highly recommend the NMA lectures he did, they're the exact same material, but you can get them legally, to support him :) However, I saw the greatest improvement when I drew the basic shapes in the drawing manual: beans, boxes, and stuff. It only took me a few weeks to really "max" them out, but from then on, every line I made was a felt form. Nothing was really flat anymore.

The David Finch master study streams:

Claire Wendling: https://youtu.be/7ukExmlSRWU
Simon Bisley: https://youtu.be/Z2CZKX089w0

Carlos Pacheco: https://youtu.be/jFkqUtJ4mRM
Kevin Nowlan: https://youtu.be/ni30Hp72aeY
Joe Quesada: https://youtu.be/atXd2HbHYO8

Don't stress out too much, just enjoy the process and be curious! I literally spent the last 5 hours drawing from the references I have saved on my computer and listening to my City Pop playlist on Spotify. It's important to find a routine you enjoy and can look forward to doing every day.

as a /beg/ i think the best thing is to just try and draw whatever and try to draw it accurately. i unironically would recommend getting whatever reference images you want, using photoshop or paint or something to put horizontal and vertical lines on the image or even a full-on grid, and then drawing from it using those lines as plumb lines to check the angles of things or where things roughly align. you need to get in that habit of looking for how things are placed relative to each other and what direction something is going in
