The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6778651

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Are those brass? if so are they actually brass or brass plated?
I've only used the regular nickel plated ones, but they eventually corrode because I dip them in water to clean them.(the nickel wears out and iron is exposed).
Do you use all the nibs? For me the G-pen is all I need. Maru sometimes for finer hatching.
European nibs are slept on.They aren't as hard as the japanese, Picrel is really good, but It's getting art to find. Moebius used one of these and they really hare great for drawing.

Huh, I have a very similar one, take a look. Although it says "JB Mallat Deposse Manifold", I have a ton of nibs, lots of English and French ones, too. Get them very cheap in an antique store from my town and I give them good use. Regarding whether they're brass or brass coated, I think they're brass coated but otherwise stainless steel. One of my art teachers flat out told me to get Tachikawa instead of using G-pen due the pressure I have on my sketches/inking, they're much sturdier and would suit my art better.
>Buy new ones bro
I'm trying to find some nice ones, but eh, nothing quite catches my eye. The ones I can get are usually black or some neon plastic color, these metal ones I got them a few years ago when customs wasn't a pain.
I'll add a drawing in the next post

picrel is the only answer. You can use with a nib or brush, dilute as you deem best. Dries quickly.Total game changer.

Trad anons, how does stuff like white ink and whiteout work when you're trying to scan the end product? Doesn't that stuff tend to create creases/bumps as it dries? Nothing some editing can make it disappear, don't worry if your pages aren't perfect from the get to. Adjusting them digitally like Tsutomu Takahashi, Jim Lee or countless others and you're good to go. For the record, I use acrylic base or liquid paper besides a white gel pen for those corrections.

if you used the white ink, don't even worry about ,unless you do empasto because you are full mongoloid. I apply it thinly and sometimes build up with a second layers in order to not get any texture. works amazingly and doesn't crack. the binder is quite stable.
But whiteouts have some weird non-water based ink and it does build up and crack. Just avoid them.

>>6780369
i'ts simply way more fun to use white ink. and you can actually use it to create very cool effects. I mean we're doing trad for a reason.

There is no "maximum" other than what limitations you put on yourself. It's not a matter of "how many panels can I fit on this page?" it's "what would be the most compelling way to convey what I'm trying to convey, keeping page turns in mind". How many panels that takes is a matter of intent and skill, and it depends heavily on what you're trying to convey and how.

A lot of people forget to include information redunancy -- when a pro mangaka wants you to notice an action or an object, they'll show it multiple times. For example: A character is clenching their fist while talking to another character, you'll see the fist clenching while it shares the panel with the rest of the figures, and again in a panel focusing specifically on the clenching fist. It's very easy to miss the clenched fist in the first panel, so the second panel makes it obvious. I find it very very easy to forget to include information redundancy, because as the person drawing it it's really easy to think that people will notice it the first time so you can devote that page space to something else. Paneling choices are all about effectively conveying information (and emotion).

Am I tripping? I saw the latest Silent Manga Grand Prix winners. The story with the cat and the old man was the most basic, bland story with bad art and composition, I was asking myself how it even got to a top 5 position, especially compared with the other story.
The other one with the winter spirit and the blind girl is heartfelt, creative, the art style is crisp and clean and the subtle coloring really makes it stand out. It definitely deserved a win.

So can anyone who sees something I didn’t, tell me how these two are remotely on the same level???

wasn't planning to make a "Brick joke" but I could. had to look up what that was. For those who don't know:
Named after an old joke, which seems at first blush to be a pair of unrelated jokes. At the end of the first joke, a brick is tossed away, leaving the confused listener without a punchline. At the end of the second joke, the brick returns and the listener falls on the floor laughing. For bonus points, the teller can tell an actual unrelated joke in between. Sometimes, the Brick Joke structure of introducing a seemingly irrelevant feature, only to return to it much later, after the audience has largely forgotten about it, can be used for drama as well as comedy; when that feature was a joke, it's known as Chekhov's Gag.

Yes, that's what I meant. From my experience, here's the what appears most popular on these sites.
>Webtoon Canvas: pretty anime style, romance, drama, self-insert, isekai, as long as your art is pretty and in color, you'll do well. If you have an existing fanbase, Webtoon will cream their pants over you
>Tapas: lgbtq+ romance. It's so goddamn hard to grow on this site, which is weird since Kakao owns it
>MangaPlus: shonen traditional manga
>GlobalComix: nsfw, western-style traditional style comics. Just got like 2 million dollar investment, so this place could grow (probably not for you or me, though)
>NamiComi: still in beta? barely any readers but you could take a chance and post there to get some visibility early
>ComicFury: nsfw, furry, western-style
>Tumblr: lots of lgbtq+, can be hard to grow if you don't make fan content
>Twitter, self-host: do whatever you want but it's a lot of work but if you want to monetize, all the profits go to you
Also forgot to mention Webcomics app, but it's similar to Webtoon Canvas and Tapas. You could also post on Reddit if you want

>Is your editor also the (potential) publisher? If yes, do you mind sharing the company's name? I am interested in potential publication as well beyond self-prints.
Hold on, he's not "my editor", he is just "an editor I've spoken to". But he's a TI NET rep, the group that publishes COMIC Mugen Tensei/COMIC MILF. I applied to them first because they have the most information on their site. He recommended I shop around other publishers though, in hopes of finding an editor who knows english better so we can have meetings, and I do intend to keep looking. I asked and he told tell me that if I can't find one I could still submit stuff to TI NET again, but he seemed a bit unsure about giving editorial feedback through text/annotation, telling me he hasn't done it that way before. Actually he even told me there are other foreigners who have published work with them (no idea who), but they have their meetings in japanese. What I have now isn't debut-material for a couple of aforementioned writing issues -- I think how this works is they want to have meetings while you're making it, rather than just making the thing and submitting it to be published as-is.

>>6787332
I just submitted work to their website submission portal. You could too if you wanted to, nothing really stopping anybody.
>Do you speak Japanese?
Like a baby. No, I've been painstakingly translating text to communicate.
>Did you publish a webcomic in Japanese and get attention? And most importantly of all, what are the plans to move to Japan?

you're cowboy anon, right? You've been telling people over and over again that freelancing is just like applying for a regular job, but I didn't believe you, and I got scared off from freelancing when I looked at upwork and fiverr commissions and the extremely low prices they were offering. but turns out, after doing tons of research, freelancing is just that: it's coldcalling art directors, publishers, recruiters, agents, and sending your portfolio everywhere. I was reading Loomis' Creative Illustration today, and he was talking about how he started his career by mailing out tons of copies of his portfolio to every advertising agency he could find, and he just got work that way, one after another. I guess manga is ultimately the same way... if you want to be a comic artist or writer, you just need to submit to samples

The age of social media keeps making me think you need to become "famous" then people approach you, but it's actually the other way around

Isn't that panel supposed to be intentionally filled with words? To convey that this lady has verbal diarrhea and can't stop/won't stop talking?

As for how your characters are developed, you don't have to use one of those "plan out your character" reference sheets, but it never hurts to do that as well. It can also be a nice exercise in drawing procrasti- a nice exercise in thinking about what makes your characters tick. I came across this one and it was fun to try to answer the questions.

You don't HAVE to follow the rule if you don't want to, it's just a general guideline because not following there is the possibility that your audience gets disoriented if a character that was taking up a certain part of the panel/screen's "real estate" is suddenly somewhere else. The concept is that people are dumb and their brains want to keep a person in a particular place.

I've looked around on a few sites that talk about it, and their argument is that if you need to change up the way a character is shown, create a new establishing shot and then go from there.

Now that's WAY more readable, holy shit. You should take a look at some mangas that have fights with a busy background. Anything from Dragonball to One Punch Man, etc. Often times, you'll notice that for impactful shots they either 1) temporarily subtract the background entirely to force focus on the characters, 2) severely minimize the details of the background while still giving you the sense of what is around the characters, or 3) something as simple as using a mask layer and have a clear border around just the characters so the audience's eyes can still immediately tell where things are.

You're struggling to imagine having a 3d environment that you merely use for perspective reference rather than outright tracing it? Didn't I outright say that there are advantages beyond corner cutting in the passage you are quoting?

>>6799138
Borderline baseless claim. There's no foundation for it beyond a handful of examples.

>Does blender have a huge learning curve? Also I thought that was better suited for character models
All 3d has a huge learning curve, but environments are mostly just simple shapes. There are loads of tutorials that can hold your hand, so I won't.

>> No.6799522

While we're on the topic of 3d generally, how is it that I see nice looking 3d assets sometimes made by people who can't draw on a 2d plane (trad, digital or otherwise)? I understand there's a learning curve, but is 3d work THAT much easier? I've always toyed around with the thought of rendering any specific panel from my manga into a 3d scene just for kicks.

I think I am good with grand premises but struggle really hard with specific and linking things together in my story. I know that art I will just have to practice like a maniac but I know execution is key with writing any tips? Like I don't want a boring exposition dump for my first chapters or a one-shot but want to draw readers in in a unique way.

How are backgrounds like this drawn? Is it traced? Is it a photo with digital effects done to turn it in to line art? If it is a photo, did the mangaka use a stock photo or did they somehow take the photo themselves?

>> No.6800537

Often times mangaka assistance take photos of places and then use CSP's "convert to lineart" tool to change everything at the push of a button. CSP itself has a tutorial as to how to do this.

This looks like a photo that could have been taken from the lobby of a tall hotel or office building. I guess one big advantage of setting your manga in a modern city setting is you can photo and convert to lineart every background

>> No.6800574

>>6800571
It's partially why so many mangas happen to take place in present day. Easy as hell for assistants to get backgrounds - no real thought required. Just grab a photo, turn it into lineart instantly with CSP's conversion tool, and you're already off working on the next panel's background.

Do they do the same for interiors and school settings or is that usually 3D models?

>> No.6800582

>>6800578
There's no reason why they couldn't do photos for interiors, but often times you're not going to want it 1-to-1, you'll want characters on objects, or some objects will be moved around, etc. Having to go and pose all that manually is a pain, so some mangakas will utilize 3d models for interior scenes.

Now keep in mind that that's only for some mangakas. Many of them just draw everything traditionally, and it's what I would encourage everyone here to do, primarily because 1) it is never a bad thing to have a better grasp/mastery over perspective and you only do yourself a favor in the long run by always practicing, and 2) the main reason professional mangakas do these techniques is because they are under a financial deadline to get issues pumped out as fast as possible. Nobody on /mmg/ is under such constraint.

If you can use a photo instead and draw this spread in 30 mins instead of drawing it in 20 hours, isn't it smarter to use the edited photo? Your advice ensures beginners will spend 30 hours drawing background spreads then burn out and quit making comics early.

>> No.6801141

The point is that you should also develop your perspective skills. Its all good and fun to use the conversion tool for modern pictures, but the second you step outside of that you're going to run into trouble because you never exercised that artistic muscle. None of this is pointless suffering for suffering's sake. I am also NOT saying the CSP conversion tool is bad, just that going the extra inch does help you and your audience.

Anon, nobody said you have to go gonzo on background details from the get-go. You can make minimalistic backgrounds and work your way up from there. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Besides, you may end up liking backgrounds. I started out absolutely despising drawing anything but my characters but now I genuinely enjoy doing it.

Note, however, that it's heavily edited. No amount of messing with levels gets you those values, it takes a fair amount of drawing-over to get that result.
