To me, getting an audience means finding your own place in the things you like, like I said earlier. Try entering a niche, fanbase or a content pattern, eventually, and with a little bit of shilling, you will attract people from said niches. Many artists unironically made it through meritocracy and actual effort, and even if they didnt, luck isnt tangible enough for them to consider they made it through luck alone, your brain subconsciously refers to effort and skill even when luck is heavily involved, simply because effort and skill were being put in the first place.
I agree the social media game is not a meritocracy, but meritocracy being commonly referenced is not the result of a change of mindset or a big artist bias, it's because it's the closest element to refer to when you observe and measure scenarios like this.

About RT discourse, there's a lot to unpack.
Normally the reason why *anyone* skimp on RTs is because they want to keep their feed curated and tidy. It has nothing to do with their artist they're RTing, or their mindset, it's an extention of their part of the social media game. It's as simple as "people follow me for my art, so I shouldnt spam my feed with RTs", so they are mindful about them.
About RTing only based on similar content is also true, people would only resort to RTing things that alingn to what their audience may like. There's also the reason that people dont want to RT NSFW art to keep their own feed SFW.
All of these reasons are fair and reasonable.

How "supporting" is slowly boiling down to pressing a stupid button is starting to get on my nerves.

I go out of my way to explicitly tell people in their DMs how much I like their stuff, make comments on their posts whenever I find them, overall giving heavy words of encouragement, telling them honest criticism, advices and even redlining them, I refer these people to my social art circles for them to grow their connections and engagement and I do my best to be a good artist friend they can rely on. Why? Because I genuinely want to see these people improve and succeed.
