These were the first pencils I brought when I started learning to draw... And I was so disappointed, they're just regular pencils
Graphite as a, medium is pretty shit overall
If you want black and white, use Charcoal
I do most of my sketching in high quality oil colored pencils now, they feel divine on paper as opposed to that scratchy feeling of pencil.
I use Lyra Rembrandt

FC makes a nice mark, but I hate them ever since they changed to their eco friendly "wasserlack" water-based green paint. Shit comes off all over your hands. They ruined a really good pencil.

Faber is a garbage company producing nothing but trash. It's the definition of paying for a brand rather than paying for quality. I have that exact box.
Even Faber's fucking mechanical pencils SUCK. Avoid this company like the plague.

you dont sharpen lead holders. you do your rough shapes and lines and then come in with a .3 or .5 for detail and making clean lines. its supposed to be a dull big blob of graphite. you can get an edge if you just rotate it slightly as well.

>> No.6772668

>>6772494
>you dont sharpen lead holders.
There's literally a sharpener in the cap of a 2mm staedler lead holder. You don't *have to* sharpen the leads, but it's clearly something.

Fine artists typically use (sharpened) 2mm clutches over .3/.5/.7 leads.

that cap sharpner is absolute trash buying a seperate one is much better, they manage to keep their points so well too unlike a regular pencil. But it is worse for trying to shade with the side of the lead

Also it seems that people are getting lead holders and mechanical pencils confused. Those japanese mechanical pencils that rotate whenever you press down are pretty cool though

It's good when you're on the spot. Sandpaper is the most polyvalent sharpening option in my experience

>>6772798
Digital art as no intrinsic value, and usually doesn't allow the expression of skills as fully as traditional mediums. It's superior from the perspective of businesses needing to mass produce / produce quickly, but that's generally not what (fine) artist aims to do.

This. Digital art is the same as printmaking - it's for mass reproduction. Instead of carving lines into copper, you draw a picture using software. If Albrecht Durer was alive today, he would use digital medium.

I think pencils do have their place, especially when used more similarly to charcoal in terms of using the different weights in their proper use case, rather than just going at everything with one weight.

But I do definitely think charcoal is better.

>>6771510
Mechanical has it's uses, but they can't just be used interchangeably with regular graphite pencils. Same as Using an HB won't do the job of a 6B. Tools have specific uses in mind, so it's really comparing apples to oranges when saying mechanical is better than a wood pencil.

Also I have a really nice metal mechanical pencil, has a good weight to it.
