Okay so say you go on reddit, to /r/oilpainting, you'll notice all the paintings have that same drab flatness. What is that and how do I avoid it? Like are they jsut keeping everything too close in value or what? Even in college I'd sometimes go to the student art exhibitions and it was all the same shit, everything looked dull and flat. Yet other paintings I've seen online look real and alive and vibrant and 3 dimensional.

I've just been there, first few paintings showed a diverse amount of skills. Try posting some specific examples. Nevertheless, typical beginner mistakes are poor value handling, and poor temperature handling. The former will break the 3-dimensionality, while the second will dull/mud the colors

It’s fine, people need to get past the technical parts first. You can’t avoid them so it’s weird to be critical of people learning. Oil works well (like monster clay) for mold building or sculpting people I found, stays soft feels really organic when finished and with water based I find it dries out quickly, but works great for sanding and smoothing down. I was using an apoxie based clay on that sculpture and while it retains great detail it also can be a bit too rigid unless you sand it to the absolute point of glass smoothness then spraying gloss coats of varnish over them to get it reflectively smooth. I used to use wax for when I did aluminum castings back in college, wax is great but like oil based clays can retain every touch, the one thing I’ve read is that a lot of sofubi artists do is make an original in clay, then a wax cast and heat it so it melts a small bit allowing for the gloss of the wax to take over
>picrel is the original in the apoxie with the gloss coats (weighs quite a bit more than the resin)

most newbs absolutely abuse titanium white, which is too powerful and ends up making everything look chalky, like in all those reddit examples you shared. You have three options to fix this:
>Learn to use tit white sparingly, learn to value up your mixes with colors other than white.
>Switch to zinc white, much easier to handle, less powerful than tit white, won't make everything chalky. Zinc white has issues in terms of longevity though, if you care about that.
>Use lead white or similar, like Cremnitz white. These offer the same benefits as Zinc white without compromising the longevity of your paintings. Downside is lead is toxic though.
From my understanding, most pros and students at serious academies use lead white.

Here’s my genuine advice on drawing women:

Draw them until you’re aroused because you won’t be aroused by incorrect female anatomy. If it doesn’t look right you won’t be attracted to it. That’s what I do.

In terms of drawing men, you need to draw them in such a way that you feel violent towards them. You need to tap into the part of your masculinity that hates other men, and ESPECIALLY hates ideal looking powerful men. Make a man look heroic and perfect until you want to fucking stab the paper because you hate him so much. Voila.

Art is nothing if not the mating strategy of human males who could not compete physically, so we had to compete creatively. Use that.

If you are a touch-based learner who needs to FEEL THE FORM then dip pen is the best for inking imo because of its flexibility and it gives the drawer a lot more freedom than with other pens. When you can really feel the rhythm of flowing lines and dancing of the pen, that's when you know you've done a good work or not. Anyway you can go with any watercolor brush as well for inkwash. Just try it both straight from the pot and diluted. Experiment with dilution and ink to water ratio.

Depends what kind of work you're doing, and your skill level. I've got an A5 for sketching/small studies, especially on the go. I've got some ~A4 too that I tend to reserve now for more polished work.

Working on big formats (>A4) has advantages for beginners, but it's unusable on the go. And for the studio, packs of sheets are often cheaper/more versatile.

Most important thing is, make sure the damn thing opens flat. Grammage doesn't really matter unless you're working with wet media. If so, make sure the paper is at least advertised for ink, and not just for drawing.

Diffuse, bright light is ideal. Like the light that comes through a window that's not facing the sun directly, on a bright day.

This is hard to simulate in an artificial environment. There's a reason photographers use a lot of reflectors and other tools to disperse light.

My advice is to set up a lighting system that illuminates your room as much as possible, so you don't have to rely on direct light as much.

This can be tricky in spaces that don't have overhead lighting.

I painted a meat guy. Was practicing organic forms and things ended up vaguely humanoid, so it turned into a meat guy.
Though as a consequence there's not much composition or anything. It's pretty small, an A5 paper, I should probably start painting on A4 more, but these small ones were a cheap crap paper that I nonetheless didn't want to just throw away.

>>6748251
Nice colours! The fabric is a bit too consistent in the size of he folds, like many tubes, but good I think! cloth is very hard, I can't draw or paint it yet. It does give a unique feel to the painting, like all the fabric is very thick.

The figure is great except the face is a bit flat. But nice work! How long did it take? I find myself for some reason stressing over when a painting takes long, even though my life is pretty empty and better spend it painting than lurking. Meat guy for example took 2 and a half hours I think roughly.

>How long did it take?

I don't even know how to measure it. I kept putting it on the back-burner because my first attempt was an unmitigated disaster.

Also I had to drive across the country, had a parent sharing my tiny bedroom for 2 weeks, lost my job, and got violently sick for a week.

So, I have no way of knowing how long it actually took, because I was just noodling on it between one thing an another.

But, it wasn't quick. Largely because I was working very carefully and slowly, hoping to avoid the mistakes that had derailed my first attempt. I think I've learned a lot, though. In future attempts I may put an ink layer down to get the flats/roughs, and then paint over that to add the detail. That might work better.

my advice would be to reserve paint making for things that can't be gotten in tube paint. it's tempting to make ochre/clay paint because it's the easiest but it's even easier to buy it in tube. though it's interesting how different ochres coming from different sources behave and look differently because of different particle shapes and sizes.
malachite, azurite, and lapis lazuli are more interesting and not available in tube paint at least not in good quality. i wish i can crush vermilion and the yellow arsenic pigments. then there are lake pigments and other manufactured pigments. making lead tin yellow would be nice too, and it can't be stored as paint or it will just harden.

>> No.6751098

>>6751025
yellowing is reversible by sunlight for the most part. titanium yellows when locked away too. it's the oil. however the lighter oils dry slower and maybe not completely in the case of safflower.
lead white oil paint becoming more transparent as it ages is probably a bigger concern, but honestly just look at all the paintings from centuries that are in good visual and structural condition.

>just another rabbit hole to go down and that I might end up enjoying playing without that too much to actually paint
Just to offer an alternative viewpoint, yeah, that's an issue. It must take me about 2h to grind a nuts of paint, while getting a feel for the correct amount of oil/pigment ratio, because each pigment has its own character. There's also a difference in grinding: some pigments will get better the more you grind them, others might change hue or lose in saturation if you grind them too much.

And I'm using store-bought, artist-grade pigments. Working from raw material, you'd have to add some further steps, like purifying it.

It's fun to do to get a feel for it, but IMO it really makes you appreciate that someone is handling all this stuff for you, so that you can focus on actually painting.

But the paint is great tho, and you can get stuff you can hardly get otherwise, like walnut-mixed colors.

> A rich, potent colour favoured by the Old Masters, my Genuine Chinese Vermilion is made from the real Mercuric Sulphide. This is not a ‘hue’, as you will find in other manufacturers’ ranges. The body and texture of my Genuine Chinese Vermilion is unparalleled in the industry. This is a paint coveted not only by the Old Masters but by Modern Masters as well. Our Chinese Vermillion is made with native, natural cinnabar, purified to a degree where it has robust resistance to general gallery conditions and is only subject to change when exposed to direct sunlight or the presence of chlorine compounds, as with true historical vermilions. This is an extraordinary colour that cannot be achieved by using a cadmium.

It's likely that your eyes were right, and that you've correctly depicted what was in front of you. In which case, as a value study, it's good.

Then, when you're doing a piece of art, not a value study, there's an amount of artistic license that you can apply, and you can choose to alter reality to fit some discourse.

I've got a bunch of cheap cardstock along with a nib holder and some traditional nibs, however when I try to ink they keep ripping small pieces from the paper and throwing off my lines. >>6756541
Yeah it’s the paper. I recently upgraded to paper that isn’t copy paper and my life has improved significantly. Copy paper has really bad feathering and you have to dehydrate your ink a lot to keep it from tearing the paper fibers. Even generic multimedia sketchbook paper was better for ink. You have to clean the nib before each dip with wet tissues to clear out the paper fibers and dried ink.

For watercolor I have only used hot press 140gsm arches watercolor block. The inking is perfect and it can handle quite a bit of abuse from erasing before watercoloring, and it has been the smoothest for watercolor so far. I am looking for cheaper alternatives though.

came out well. was nice seeing progress over time from your posts. only issue i have is you should have more contrast on foreground and background. they are very similar considering massive distance difference. also, the foreground has limited variance in shapes. same couple leaves in half circle. no directionality. flattens everything into one same-same pattern. look at front of parade - those little weeds are identical straight across to the big patches. same stroke smake the bushes. only the very bottom right has any variance with some 3 dimensionality to give a bush-like feel and the one tree branch going up the side of page. the rest are identical shape and form. same pattern. same shapes. ive attached a simple example of foliage silhouettes from painting. thesea re commonly used to fill in grass, bushes, backgrounds. imagine an entire section made with just one of these. it would standout. typically you want to have multiple of these types of shapes to add diversity to the foliage. additionally, a lot of your brush shapes for leaves flatten too much and are 'fat'. they dont form leaf or foliage end points. just brush blobs. practice more foliage types and work on the brush control more. the monsters got most of the work and attention, but having that foreground tightened up will really make it pop and its not much more effort than what you are doing. just little more focus and conscious effort to diversify the foliage types/patterns. otherwise excellent job.

Is it a good idea to learn oil pastels as a /beg/? As a low effort, fun thing. I like that they are convenient and there is a limited color selection, and it seems like even the way the medium behaves is limited.

The con is that there aren't much resources other than youtube videos and maybe books I can find, but I figure I should mostly treat them like soft pastels. Any good resource would be appreciated.

No. Pastels are best used by expert hands, I think more than any other medium.

They may feel like a low effort medium, because they're handled by people who know exactly how to use them efficiently: they know what kind of shortcuts they can take to achieve their intended results.

Same thing as watching watercolorists like Zbukvick: it looks easy, you can pull off a 50×70cm painting in maybe 1h or 2h. But it takes years of training to get there, and everything is fine-tuned.

If you want to relax anything is fine tho, but don't expect systematic good results for a while.

You overworked the face but that’s not necessarily bad. That’s a technique that has been done to great effect, mainly Ingres. Ingres theory on portraits was to idealize the face and make it as attractive as possible, to the point of caricature, but if everything else in the piece was realistic you’d “believe” the face. So the fabric, interior, etc, was painted to a high degree of realism, and your mind would have no choice but to believe the faces.

Here's a few indications: pay attention to

- the reflected light/shape around the middle of the index finger
- the contour (arm) line. It's subtle but not random (nothing is random on a Bargue plate)
- the length of the slanted, top-left contour ("arm" line), that is essentially parallel to the fingers.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother fix that last point given where you are right now: it's just to help you develop your sensitivity.

Good work tho, it's (very) promising. Make sure you *don't* use sight-size for the next one. Sight-size is really a bad habit to take.

>>6765020
I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH2q9ZJMaAU the other day. At some point, the background painter stated that upon arrival in the company, he spent two weeks mastering the gradation technique for the sky, and that it's the most difficult aspect of the work.

There's also the "tilling" method taught by Watts. It's a bit cumbersome, but can get you there, albeit very slowly.

There are little tricks, you should discover them naturally with practice. For a value study in gouache, you did a good job so far.

Willpower I guess. After a while, you get in "the zone", and it gets easier. The more you practice, the better you get, the easier it is to get to "the zone".

Try making things more enjoyable for yourself.

Work on a full sheet of paper, make yourself comfortable, brew a tea, have some nice moody music, set a 1h timer (I like longer, 1h30/2h sessions, personally), pick some beautiful, relatively simple drawing to copy, and take a stab.

At your stage, focus on copying existing work more than working from life. Bargue plates are great. Try to be very cautious and precise, aim at spending say, 10h on a plate in total or something.

Hey Brian. I'm the anon that said something about your value composition/handling in a previous thread, related to this or a very similar painting. My main criticism was that your values are pretty much the same all over the picture, and I suggested you look for more variety, a more interesting value structure.

I put you up against Rubens here just because your pic reminded me of that one (same subject, pretty similar pose, just inverted). To be fair, Rubens' figure could have a lot more shadow in some parts, but at least he's using dark values around the figure to generate contrast. Notice how the darkest dark (shadow under her) and the lightest light (white sheet by her breast) are not on the figure but rather framing it. One could argue that you do the same (lightest light would be the white sheet by her knee, darkest dark either the hair or the shadows under the pillow), but due to how you apply paint, your values are never a solid mass but rather loose brushstrokes, which kinda lose effect when it comes to contrast.

Anyways, love your work, just trying to help and maybe generate some constructive discussion. Keep at it, buddy.

even just taking Olympia by Manet as an example of this, Olympia herself is painted in practically pure white paint, even compositionally the woman with the darker complexion and her can only exist together because their skin tones are so dichotomous. For the most part I do not paint women who are on either end of that spectrum. Women I paint tend to have more medium complexions. In paintings that are of darker or lighter women I solve those compositional problems differently.

I don’t always like your art, but what’s weird about all your paintings is it’s never about anything violent or off putting. There’s a lot I can critique about the style or the composition but your subject matter is almost never taboo or distasteful. Sometimes it’s a little too revealing about your… interests… but that’s just your personal taste. If you like breasts that’s not offensive really, maybe a little embarrassing for you but nothing like what I see other artists painting on twitter or in galleries. Women bleeding from their eyes but their eyes are vaginas or whatever. Maybe your style is too vague to even make art like that, I’m not sure.

I hope anon doesn't find out I also like breasts, I would be so embarrassed
have you really never met another painter who only wants to draw half-naked women?

>that infowars pic related

Fugg reminds me of the time 9 years ago i saw one of these info wars cronies doing on the street interviews when i was a student at the university of tx. He was asking whether millenials knew their bill of rights, most people did not know. Fwiw i ended up saying most if not all of them but my dumb ass started the conversation by "clarifying" to make sure we were talking about the same thing, something you do in philosophy arguments. Anyways I ended up talking to this guy for 20 minutes and eventually just felt awkward and just conceded because the dude got kinda overly passionate.
The point is, info wars edited it down to just me looking stupid and basically destroying any context, and the fucking cherry on top was that they called the video "millenials are dumb slaves" and i was the thumbnail. So here it is, boxman, age 21:

For being the most "serious" thread on the board, this thread has some absolutely retarded shit written in it
Whats with the pathetic dude who only draws topless women running his mouth like he thinks he's Monet?
If you only draw naked women you're no different from the kid drawing furry porn all day, doing it on a canvas doesn't make it more virtuous

Gouache and watercolor pastels.

I think gouache and I have some kind of toxic codependency. I felt like I needed a piece of rawhide to bite down on while I was working on some parts of this.

But I'm pretty happy with it, overall.

I'm sorry man but I hate this. The water is nice but your fury OC is awful. The shading doesnt make sense for the perspective of the water. My eyes dont know what your focal point is supposed to be because the background and center piece are drawing too much attention to themselves.

I did a quick test of interference violet reusing an old sketch.
The sky was pure violet applied over a near-black underpainting. The water used mixed gradients.

Overall it seems potentially interesting. Although, it applies with a bit more opacity than I would've liked, and has the feel of titanium white.
