Or pages, I suppose.
Storytelling and compositions like comic/manga panelling and pages are the true test of an artist's worth.

Art ebbs and flows. It doesn't really improve or decrease, beyond certain historical trends like the understanding of the laws of light and perspective in Europe after the dark ages. The only difference is the style and quantity of good art, which has increased exponentially as people have access to tools and resources, which the internet provides easily. Pound for pound, person for person, the average individual is more skilled in art now than anyone in the history of human kind. You don't have to LIKE the art of the modern day, but if you can't find art created recently that you like, you're likely blind, and it's pretty impressive that you still visit IC even after you lost your sight. Respect.

The time when art was best is probably right around when you were a teenager, because that's when you weren't good enough to notice the flaws while still being good enough to appreciate the quality. In fact, I wager you were 12.

Yeah, the average drawing got worse, because more people are capable of drawing than before, rather than it being only people who were basically trained from their teenage years and dedicated a good chunk of their entire education to it, and then people who couldn't draw, period. This is a good thing. After all, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to draw.

No. The artist's of yesteryear were far more capable than current day artists because they had zero to no crutches to rely on when compared to the scale of today. Not to mention most manga artists of the day were classically trained or self taught themselves the fundies to the point you couldn't tell they weren't. That said, playing around with page layouts, while cool, can often distract or break the flow of the comic. A lot of western comics do "cool shit" with their layouts on every page, but are worse off for it than another comic that plays it completely safe.

1.Thread tittled "Your Favorite Panels" on a niche-weirdo geek website.

2. Several people post Dragon Ball panels in said thread.

3. A dude gets mad because the series is "popular".

4. Clearly has ignored the title of the thread, the myriad of posts, and thusly has ignored Why the series might be popular.

Nothing can be popular and/because
it's good, apparently. Of course unless they like it, I'm only going to assume.

I think most people have problems with how inconsistent the artwork is in Hunter x Hunter. It can look like your pic, but other times it can look like pic related. Togashi has health problems that apparently prevent him from doing his best work. I've heard that a lot of the unfinished pages from the weekly publication were fixed when they were released in the volumes. With the context of everything, I think it's crazy to use Togashi's worst panels to say that he's a terrible artist.

>> No.6769346

>>6769335
He kinda does it on purpose tho, doesn`t he? He uses "bad" art when it doesn`t need to be good. I mean if scene needs this wow effect, he goes all in, if it`s some unimportant stuff like you posted he goes One on it. Yeah, even One kinda does it.
I actually like this trick.

The thing is is that 90% of the pics people cherry-pick as examples were already fixed for the volume releases (your pic related is one of like two chapters that haven't had gotten that treatment). And even at his worst his work is still easily readable and flows nicely, which is something that even some pros working at their peak can't boast. And like what you pretty much said the lows of the series don't come close to outweighing the highs.
It's just wild to me how there are vehement fans of the series who've refused to catch up on like a season's worth of material because of 2 chapters of sub-par artwork (which are mostly dialogue anyway)

That would be a good idea, but sometimes his priorities don't seem right. In this page, why did he feel the need to add so much detail to the turkey, while leaving everything else so sketchy? I don't understand why he doesn't hire assistants to help with the unimportant scenes, if he's going to phone them in anyways. It's worth noting that this page was fixed for the volume release.

Apparently, Togashi was a "Cut corners" kind of guy even before his back problems got really bad. Like, dating back to the Dark Tournament arc of YYH he would do "Good enough" for some panels and pages and wouldn't let his assistants touch them up.

He's had the back issues since YYH but then they kicked in high when he started doing HxH so even his usual corner cutting just ended up having pages that needed to be touched up in the volume release.

he has his priorities right too. He pretty much maxxed out dramatic writing, shortchanging the art. Imagine what he could've done as a screenwriter / director

He did, and does. HxH has been ongoing for decades. Some of that time I can imagine he simply did not feel like working with assistants. Having worked with assistants myself, I can see why. It's a different kind of skill from drawing, and I can empathize with somebody who'd rather do it themselves, even if the end result is spotty. It's simply far more mental effort to have to direct people to do something when you know in your head what you want it to be and could do it yourself. Don't get me wrong, to call using assistants or not doing so "lazy" would be comically off-mark.
